#(describes things that are just a new look with less customization) more than just a new look!#(the right click menu is a mess in win 11 requiring an extra button press and clashing ui design to reveal basic functionality) find things #with fewer clicks!#i mean no wonder 60% of users haven't upgraded. they do not even spindoctor their new evil technology like copilot in their own copy.#is it because most older hardware does not even have the architecture to support the “neural engine accelerated” features?#like let me go through it. 1. added dedicated “weather and news” widget that in practicality just displays ads. 2. start is centered now #and less customizable. you cannot move the taskbar anymore. 3. native integrated zone snapping. i mean. not bad in itself but works worse #than powertoys. which is a win app to begin with. that i would use instead in win 11. and that you can install to win 10.#4. new ui design for multiple desktop overview. basically just a macos copy but i'll give them it looks slightly less confusing than what's #in win 10. win 10 does have multi desktop natively though? 5. you call it simpler and quicker when you kill the native calendar and mail #apps and replace them with the horrible outlook wrapped webapp. which comes with ads you cannot deactivate????

There's a cheapo creative suite clone called affinity that I've been curious about recently, because the 20 year old copies of illustrator and indesign I've been using are really dated

I grabbed the free trials last night and apparently they run for 6 months, which is insane. And very immediately there's a ton of qol stuff and interesting systems that are way beyond what cs2 was doing, so I'm pretty invested. If it's less crash prone too I might just go for it

The main downside is that compatibility with Adobe file formats is apparently pretty inconsistent, but if I'm just doing all my own shit by myself that's not a huge concern

#there's a paint/photomanip program in there too which obviously overlaps a lot with csp #I like the ui slightly more in affinity's program cuz it's definitely desktop focused rather than touchscreen focused #depending on how integration works between it and the publishing program I might end up preferring that too

Some things I've enjoyed in the past month! If I react positively to something, I generally like it whether or not it has flaws. I'll just mention what I appreciate!

The Housekeeper and the Professor, Yoko Ogawa. I adore this author. This book was gentle and a little heartbreaking, and really lovely. I cried over the love reveal.

The Secret Talker, Geling Yan. I won't spoil it, but while the premise is kind of absurd, the book was a wild ride. I couldn't put it down. (check warnings on this one)

The Best Offer, 2013, starring Geoffrey Rush. A famed auctioneer becomes entangled with a young heiress who won't leave her house. The twist in this hurts. I think about it a lot.

Safe, 1995, directed by Todd Haynes. Brilliant lead performance by Julienne Moore. Disturbing look at how society treats disease. The 90s sexism rang loudly. I've admired Todd since Velvet Goldmine and don't know how I missed this one.

Ammonite, 2020, starring Kate Winslet in a fantastic performance. Watched via Kanopy (ty, library!). Melancholy love story between two women and exactly my speed. A+ on the intimacy but has an ambiguous ending. Loosely based on paleontologist Mary Anning, who is also featured in Tracy Chevalier's novel Remarkable Creatures (probably my favorite of hers).

Jade by X JAPAN. This song goes hard. The rock opening shifts into a power ballad. I didn't think I'd heard of this band until last year, only to discover that one of my college J-rock favorites (Crucify My Love) is also theirs. Small world etc.

Aftermath by Muse. I've been looping this song for a couple of months. Something about it just goes right for my heart. Haven't been able to get enough of Neutron Star Collision either.

Google Calendar has integrated Tasks, and you can even put them in tidy columns! At the top of the calendar page, just click the little checkbox to toggle between calendar and tasks view.

#read + watched + on repeat #I think I'll do this every month #I looked for Tasks last year so I'm not sure when they did this #but the calendar integration is certainly new for me #they integrated it into Gmail and Docs a while ago which was fantastic -- changed my pro workflow #but I've been unable to get to Tasks itself via desktop until a few days ago #absolutely thrilled

I did it everyone, i shelved the project for a few years but i finally finished building my first pc from scratch. it's incredibly slow but wow. i can say i build a pc! Maybe i'll buy a gpu for it. mmmmaybe..

#goal for this system was to learn how to build a pc and how such an incredible machine we use daily actually works!#also another goal was to make it both small and incredibly cheap power wise. hence why its slow and im kinda iffy on getting a gpu for it #currently games run using an integrated driver in my cpu #my next plan is to probably get a desktop case for it which is smaller than the current case. and maybe either install a cheap gpu #or upgrade its harddrive from an HDD to SSD
