Women Dressing Women Costume Exhibit at The Met

"The Costume Institute's fall 2023 exhibition will explore the creativity and artistic legacy of women fashion designers from The Met’s permanent collection, tracing a lineage of makers from the turn of the twentieth century to the present day by highlighting celebrated designers, new voices, and forgotten histories alike.
Women Dressing Women will feature the work of over seventy womenswear designers, spanning ca. 1910 to today, including French haute couture from houses such as Jeanne Lanvin, Elsa Schiaparelli, and Madeleine Vionnet, to American makers like Ann Lowe, Claire McCardell, and Isabel Toledo, along with contemporary designs by Iris van Herpen, Rei Kawakubo, Anifa Mvuemba, and Simone Rocha." - The Met
I love that The Met is doing two different costume exhibits a year now. This one only runs for three months, so obviously I had to go this week. Highlights below!

Above Photo: Maria Grazia Chiuri and Grace Wales Bonner at House of Dior, 2020, edition 2022

Above Photo: Louiseboulanger, 1928

Above Photo: Ana de Pombo at House of Paquin, 1938

Above Photo: Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen, spring/summer 2012
I remember when they last showed this McQueen piece in 2016 (at the Manus x Machina exhibit) and they’re finally highlighting the back of it, which I love.

Above Photo: Rei Kawakubo at Comme des Garçons, spring/summer 1997
So in love with the story behind this design (above).

Above Photo: Norma Kamali, 1978

Above Photo: Betsey Johnson at Paraphernalia, 1966

Above Photo: Mad Carpentier, late 1940s

Above Photo: Melitta Baumeister, autumn/winter 2021-2022
At first glance, I really hated this one (above) and then after a few minutes it really grew on me, especially considering the fact that it’s a product of its time period.

Above Photo: Chanel, autumn/winter 1938-1939

Above Photo: Kate Mulleavy and Laura Mulleavy at Rodarte, autumn/winter 2006-2007
My favourite piece of the whole collection, by far.

Above Photo: Kate Mulleavy and Laura Mulleavy at Rodarte, autumn/winter 2006-2007 (the back of the dress)
And I love that someone had the good sense to put a mirror behind this one so we could see the all of the details.
The exhibit runs now until March 3rd.

10 Stars Who Flew The Flag For Sustainable Fashion In 2021
2021 has seen the fashion industry ramping up its efforts to reduce its impact on the planet. But it’s not just brands that are taking action, with a number of celebrities, too, flying the flag for sustainable fashion this year. Whether by wearing vintage or opting for an eco-minded designer, A-listers have a powerful role to play in influencing our shopping habits, and making conscious fashion the norm.
Bella Hadid
Bella Hadid is well-known for her love of vintage, with her penchant for archival Jean Paul Gaultier, Comme des Garçons and Stella McCartney-era Chloé only continuing to grow this year. She’s also added some more unexpected brands into the mix, including a micro skirt from Noughties favourite Abercrombie & Fitch.
Kendall Jenner
Another JPG obsessive, Kendall Jenner has given us some of our favourite vintage looks of the year, including this printed sheer number by the French brand. The model is also a fan of eco-conscious brand Havre Studio, which restores and refits vintage men’s suits found at flea markets in Mexico City.
Rihanna
From Chanel to Dior by John Galliano, Rihanna’s shown off a series of envy-inducing vintage pieces in 2021. She’s also continued to champion New York-born and London-based designer Conner Ives, who repurposes vintage jerseys and silk scarves as part of his approach.
Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie is known for her environmental work, so it’s no surprise that the actor and activist has taken a conscious approach to her wardrobe this year. For a trip to Paris in July, she opted for looks from both Gabriela Hearst and Chloé, the latter of which gained B-Corp status this year. Later on, her children appeared on the red carpet wearing past looks from her wardrobe, including her 2014 Oscars gown.
Emma Watson
Another star known for her environmental activism, Emma Watson has also championed a number of eco-minded brands this year. The actor wore an upcycled Harris Reed dress to the Earthshot Prize ceremony, while opting for an Emilia Wickstead look made using recycled yarn to meet Al Gore. Watson also later chose a full-look by Scandi upcycling brand Rave Review during Cop26, the United Nations climate conference, in November.
Zendaya
Zendaya has delivered some of her best looks to date in 2021, including a series of vintage pieces – ranging from ’90s Versace to Noughties Roberto Cavalli. With the British Vogue October issue cover star revealing she’s creating an archive with stylist Law Roach, it just goes to show how a slice of fashion history can make a real statement on the red carpet.
Timothée ChalametIt’s no secret that Timothée Chalamet sets the internet alight with every look he steps out in – which is why it’s great news that he’s been championing sustainably-focused brands. They include Stella McCartney, a favourite of his, as well as pieces from Prada’s Re-Nylon range – made from discarded fishing nets and other plastic waste.
Lorde
Lorde showed her commitment to sustainable fashion by wearing not one but two eco-minded looks on the night of the Met Gala. First came the embellished separates by Emily Bode, which celebrated craft and featured charms, beads and pennies dating back to the 1890s. Then, there was the after-party dress by Collina Strada (a brand that she also chose for her “Solar Power” video).
Jaime XieBling Empire star Jaime Xie made a point of wearing vintage during fashion month, including an instantly-recognisable sculpted dress from Balenciaga spring/summer 2008, a printed dress from Versace’s menswear spring/summer 2005 collection, and a Dior spring/summer 2004 silk dress, from when the house was under the helm of John Galliano.
The Duchess Of Cambridge
Arguably the most famous repeat-wearer out there, the Duchess of Cambridge chose to rewear two Jenny Packham gowns (including one that was a decade old) for her appearances at the Earthshot Award ceremony and Royal Variety Show this year. Away from the red carpet, Kate also championed sustainability, opting for a recycled vest from Ganni during Cop26, and a top-handle bag from British brand Tusting earlier on in the year.

The Rise of Experiential Fashion: How Immersive Events Are Transforming the Runway

Fashion has always been about more than clothes; it’s a lifestyle, a statement, and a reflection of the cultural zeitgeist. In recent years, a seismic shift has occurred in the industry, pushing the traditional runway aside to make room for a new wave of creativity—experiential fashion. The immersive fashion events have a lasting impact on the attendees & remain loyal for the upcoming events. Also, the rise in sustainable fashion shows have made it better to gain reach & spread the social message in the society.
The Evolution of the Runway: From Spectacle to Experience
For decades, fashion shows were exclusive events where designers unveiled their latest collections to buyers, journalists, and A-list celebrities. The focus was primarily on showcasing the clothing, with models strutting down catwalks to the rhythm of high-energy music.
However, with the rise of social media and the digital age, traditional runway shows began to feel static and inaccessible. Consumers wanted more than just a glimpse of the latest collections—they wanted to be part of the story.
Enter experiential fashion. This new approach blurs the line between performance and presentation, making the audience an active participant. By combining storytelling, technology, and interactive elements, brands are creating immersive environments that leave a lasting impact.
Why Immersive Events Are Taking Over
1. Engaging a Tech-Savvy Audience
Today’s fashion audience is more tech-savvy than ever. With tools like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, they are not just spectators but content creators. Experiential fashion gives them moments worth capturing and sharing, amplifying a brand’s reach.
For instance, Gucci’s “Archetypes” exhibition in Florence used VR, AR, and interactive installations to celebrate the brand’s iconic campaigns. Visitors could not only view the collections but also step into the world Gucci created, making it a hit both in-person and online.
2. Building Emotional Connections

[Source - Whitewall.art]
Immersive fashion events are not just about the clothes; they are about creating an emotional connection. By tapping into storytelling, these events evoke feelings of wonder, nostalgia, and excitement.
Consider Dior’s Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2021 show, which took the form of a short film, “Le Château du Tarot.” It transported viewers into a mystical world inspired by tarot cards, creating a narrative that resonated deeply with the audience.
3. Catering to Experiential Consumers
A report by Eventbrite found that 78% of millennials would rather spend money on experiences than physical goods. This trend has spilled over into fashion, with consumers seeking unique, shareable experiences over traditional retail offerings.
The Power of Technology
Technology is at the heart of this transformation. From augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) to artificial intelligence (AI), tech innovations are enabling brands to push creative boundaries.
1. AR and VR in Runway Shows
AR and VR have revolutionized the runway. Balenciaga’s Fall 2021 collection was launched via a VR video game called “Afterworld: The Age of Tomorrow.” Instead of a conventional catwalk, users could navigate a futuristic world while exploring the collection, merging fashion with gaming.
2. Holograms and Projection Mapping
Fashion brands are leveraging holograms and projection mapping to create mesmerizing shows. Ralph Lauren’s 50th-anniversary event featured holographic projections across New York City’s iconic landmarks, blending art, fashion, and technology seamlessly.
3. Digital-Only Collections
The rise of digital fashion houses like The Fabricant has also introduced the concept of digital-only collections. These outfits exist purely in the virtual world, allowing users to “wear” them online. This trend not only caters to eco-conscious consumers but also expands the possibilities of fashion design.
Case Studies: Brands Leading the Experiential Fashion Revolution

1. Fendi’s Solar-Powered Catwalk
Fendi’s Spring/Summer 2022 show was an eco-conscious masterpiece set in the heart of the Italian Dolomites. Powered entirely by solar energy, the event combined sustainability with luxury. The dramatic backdrop of nature enhanced the collection’s themes of harmony and elegance, creating an unforgettable experience for attendees.
2. Louis Vuitton’s Digital Fashion House
Louis Vuitton’s collaboration with the gaming phenomenon League of Legends showcased how digital fashion can reach new demographics. The collection included skins for characters in the game, as well as physical pieces, blurring the line between digital and real-world fashion.
3. Savage X Fenty’s Inclusive Spectacle
Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty shows are the epitome of experiential fashion. Featuring diverse models, dancers, and celebrities, the events combine music, performance, and inclusivity, redefining what a fashion show can be. These shows are streamed on Amazon Prime, making them accessible to a global audience.
Sustainability and Experiential Fashion
One of the most significant criticisms of traditional fashion shows is their environmental impact. From excessive travel to extravagant sets, the carbon footprint of these events is substantial. Experiential fashion, however, is proving to be a more sustainable alternative.
Digital Events Reduce Waste
Virtual fashion shows and digital collections eliminate the need for physical runways, sets, and even clothes. This not only reduces waste but also makes fashion more accessible.
Eco-Conscious Design
Brands are also using experiential events to highlight their commitment to sustainability. Stella McCartney’s immersive installations often focus on themes of environmental conservation, aligning the brand’s values with its creative expression.
The Future of Fashion: What Lies Ahead?

As technology continues to evolve, so will experiential fashion. Here’s what we can expect in the coming years:
1. Metaverse Fashion Shows
With the rise of the metaverse, virtual worlds like Decentraland and Roblox are becoming new venues for fashion events. These platforms allow brands to reach global audiences while reducing physical limitations.
2. Hyper-Personalized Experiences
AI and big data will enable brands to create hyper-personalized fashion experiences. Imagine a virtual show where every attendee sees a collection tailored to their preferences.
3. Greater Accessibility
This fashion is making the industry more inclusive. Virtual and augmented reality tools allow anyone, anywhere, to participate in high-fashion events, breaking down barriers of exclusivity.
Conclusion
The rise of experiential fashion marks a turning point in the industry. By embracing immersive events, brands are creating deeper connections with audiences, redefining sustainability, and pushing the boundaries of creativity. As we look to the future, it’s clear that this fashion is not just a trend but a revolution. From virtual runways to multisensory installations, the possibilities are endless—and the journey has just begun. So, the next time you attend a fashion event, don’t just watch—immerse yourself in the story, the art, and the innovation. After all, in the world of experiential fashion, the audience is just as important as the runway.

The Power of the Statement Dress: Create an Impact with a Dressy Outfit

A statement dress is a powerful tool in any wardrobe, allowing you to create a memorable impact at any event. Here’s how to maximize the effect of a statement dress:
Key Elements of a Statement Dress
Bold Colors and Prints:
Opt for vibrant hues or striking patterns to draw attention. Think of bright reds, deep blues, or unique prints like florals or abstract designs. For example, Versace's Spring/Summer collections often feature bold, colorful patterns that stand out .
Unique Silhouettes:
Dresses with unconventional shapes, such as asymmetrical hems, dramatic ruffles, or voluminous skirts, can make a powerful impression. Designers like Alexander McQueen and Valentino are known for their innovative silhouettes .
Luxurious Fabrics:
High-quality materials such as silk, satin, velvet, or lace add an element of luxury and elegance. A silk slip dress or a velvet evening gown can elevate your look significantly .
Details and Embellishments:
Intricate details like embroidery, sequins, beads, or feathers can make your dress stand out. For instance, Elie Saab’s creations often feature detailed embellishments that add a glamorous touch .
Fit and Tailoring:
A well-fitted dress that accentuates your body shape can be incredibly impactful. Custom tailoring can ensure that your dress fits perfectly, enhancing your natural silhouette and ensuring you look polished and put-together .
Styling Tips for Maximum Impact
Keep Accessories Minimal:
Let your dress be the focal point by keeping accessories understated. Simple jewelry, a classic clutch, and elegant shoes are often all you need. This approach ensures that the dress remains the center of attention.
Bold Footwear:
If you do choose to make a statement with your shoes, ensure they complement rather than compete with your dress. Metallic heels or colorful pumps can add an extra layer of interest without overwhelming the outfit.
Hair and Makeup:
Your hair and makeup should enhance the overall look. A sleek updo or loose waves can complement a dramatic dress, while bold makeup can add an extra pop of glamour. For a sophisticated look, consider classic red lips or smoky eyes.
Confidence is Key:
The most important accessory to any statement dress is confidence. Stand tall and carry yourself with poise. A confident attitude can make any outfit look even more spectacular .
Examples of Statement Dresses
Red Carpet Glamour:
Celebrities often opt for statement dresses for red carpet events. Think of Zendaya’s red carpet looks, which frequently feature bold colors, unique cuts, and luxurious fabrics.
Wedding Guest Attire:
For weddings, a statement dress can be a perfect choice. Opt for a dress with elegant details like lace or beading to stand out without overshadowing the bride.
Evening Gala:
For formal galas, a floor-length gown in a bold color or with dramatic details can make a powerful impression. Designers like Dior and Oscar de la Renta offer stunning options that are perfect for such occasions .
By choosing a statement dress that combines bold colors, unique silhouettes, luxurious fabrics, and intricate details, and by styling it thoughtfully, you can create a memorable and impactful look for any special occasion.

040423 GQ
Jung Kook Feels Nervous to See Himself on a Calvin Klein Billboard
The BTS singer tells GQ about his first-ever solo campaign for the American megabrand, which marks the seventh major fashion deal he and his bandmates have inked since the start of 2023. Plus, check out an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip from the shoot.
As a member of the biggest band on the planet, BTS’s Jung Kook has performed for a collective audience of millions. But there’s one thing he hasn’t done, until now: appear on the most famous billboard on earth. For that, he had to become the global ambassador, and newest face, of Calvin Klein’s denim and underwear lines. How did this latest accomplishment compare to singing and dancing in front of tens of thousands of people at a time? “I think I’m more nervous about seeing myself on a billboard,” Jung Kook tells GQ via email.
The singer joins Michael B. Jordan, Kendall Jenner, Blackpink’s Jennie, FKA Twigs, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson to star in the American megabrand’s spring campaign. But unlike Creed III actor-director MBJ, who recently told GQ that his buddies (jokingly) gave him a hard time overseeing his smoldering shirtless shots all over their Instagram feeds, Jung Kook says his friends have been supportive.
“They actually liked it,” he says. It has also gone over well with the world’s most powerful fanbase. “I was happy to hear that,” he says, referring to his friends co-signing the campaign, “but I couldn’t be happier that our ARMY loves it!”
Ever since BTS went on musical hiatus late last year, members of the band have been racking up brand endorsements of their own. Jung Kook was just the first of two BTS members to star in a huge brand deal in the last week; the day after his CK announcement, the Italian luxury brand Bottega Veneta released their spring campaign starring his bandmate RM. Six of BTS’s seven members have landed major fashion partnerships since the start of 2023 alone: SUGA for Valentino, Jimin for Dior and Tiffany & Co., j-hope for Louis Vuitton, V for Celine, and now, Jung Kook for Calvin Klein and RM for Bottega Veneta. News of a massive campaign starring singer Jin could arrive any day now.
BTS the group has been on the global fashion radar for years: Dior’s Kim Jones designed their tour uniforms in 2019, and the bandmates collectively became Louis Vuitton brand ambassadors in April 2021, shortly after wearing head-to-toe LV to the 2021 Grammys—and then did so again in 2022. (At the 2020 ceremony, they went full Bottega Veneta.) They’ve also repped Korean brands, including last summer when they rolled up, Reservoir Dogs style, to deliver a press briefing at the White House while wearing classic suits from the Korean menswear brand Tailorable.
The members of the band were stars of fashion month this last season, which saw more European luxury brands inviting K-pop idols to sit in their front rows than ever before. Their attendance at various shows foreshadowed some of the brand deals that have followed: Not long after Suga went to the Valentino couture show in January, J-Hope hit the men’s shows for Hermès and Vuitton and sat beside his bandmate Jimin at Dior. The next month, RM was in the front row at Bottega Veneta. (For those curious about all the French-luxury-conglomerate overlap here: LVMH owns Dior, Vuitton, Tiffany, and Celine, while Kering owns Bottega.)
While high-fashion houses have been bringing in more celebrity ambassadors in recent years, Calvin Klein has featured famous people in its high-vis ad spots for decades. And because the products themselves—blue jeans, underwear—are relatively bare-bones and personal, they center their celebrity marketing campaigns on authenticity and intimacy, which usually includes some degree of undress. The shots of Jung Kook, shot by photographer Park Jong Ha in CK’s signature smoldering, black-and-white mode, are some of his most revealing public images yet; in the official press release, Jung Kook says he’s “incredibly excited for people to see a new side of me in this first campaign for the brand.”
It’s safe to assume the last few years have been a whirlwind for Jung Kook, who is 25 and presumably still discovering new sides of himself. Though he admits that his “taste in music changes so much that sometimes I don’t even know how my taste changes over time,” he’s made some definitive changes to his wardrobe as of late.
“In terms of fashion, I don’t think I can wear anything that fits tight on me anymore,” he says. “And I LOVE ‘all black’ looks, except for anything Calvin Klein Jeans. :)”
