Jo Kirkland Johnston passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by her family at the age of 92, on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 in Birmingham, Alabama. Born on May 19, 1931, in Ozark, Alabama, Jo was a beloved wife for seventy-five years to the love of her life, Dr. Furnie Wesley Johnston. She was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to many. Her family affectionately referred to her as "Mimi" and friends often called her "the Queen" as she was the epitome of a true Southern lady. She was strong in her faith and loved her family to the fullest.

Jo was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Furnie Wesley Johnston, Jr., a son, James Kirkland Johnston, a grandson, Colbert Wesley Clark, as well as her parents, Admiral Dewey Kirkland and Tannie Lucille Kirkland. Jo is survived by her children, George David Johnston (Maurine), Carole Louise Johnston, Linda Johnston Thompson (Ken, Sr.) and Laura Johnston Etheredge (David). Grandchildren, Thomas Johnston Hanes, Julianne Johnston Ferber (Scott), James Andrew Hanes (Amber) Furnie Wesley Johnston, III, John Kenneth Thompson, Jr. (Suzanne), Laura Lee Thompson, Madison Elizabeth Clark, and Abigail Kirkland Clark, step-granddaughters Rachel Madison Etheredge (Zac) and Mary Katherine Etheredge. She is a great grandmother to Libby Ryan Ferber. She is also survived by her sisters Mary Barton, of Tuscaloosa and Martha, "Snookie" McLendon, of Ozark. Her many nieces, nephews, and family members along with her caregivers will remember her lovingly.

Jo graduated from Bob Jones University in South Carolina in 1948 and attended Birmingham Southern College where she studied piano and graduated with several honors for musical excellence.

Born in 1931, Jo Johnston grew up in Ozark, Alabama where her father, A.D, Kirkland, ran a pharmacy in downtown Ozark. She studied classical music over her career composed over 100 pieces of music. Three notable compositions are the Army branch anthems: "Above the Best," written for the Army Aviation Branch; "Essayons," written fort the Army Corps of Engineers; and "Dragon Soldiers," written for the Army Chemical Corps.

Jo's love for music encompassed more than just the military. She collaborated with her daughter, Linda Thompson, to write three musicals together. She founded Elenjay Publishing and served as president of Apache Records. She also wrote a song for the marriage of the Prince of Monaco, which made it to the Billboard top 100 for several weeks.

Johnston has received many awards and honors over the course of her career. In 1988, she was presented with the U.S. Army's Outstanding Civilian Service Award which was the second-highest civilian award bestowed by the Army. She also received the Katharine Wright Award, the Commander's Award for Public Service, and the Order of St. Michael (Silver) Award. She was honored to have been selected to be featured in the Dale County Music and Theater Mural, the second mural commissioned by the Ozark Mural program, alongside other talented individuals from Dale County who have excelled in music and/or theater.

Jo will be remembered for her beautiful smile and generous heart. She was a woman of passion, strong character, and loyalty. She loved to entertain others by sitting at the piano and making up songs about them. Her grandchildren delighted in this and have many fond memories of this tradition. She was a true blessing and light to others.

Jo's favorite Bible verse is from the book of Isaiah, "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." She would quote this Bible verse frequently throughout her life and share it with others when they would go through trials.

A Celebration of life will be held in the sanctuary at First United Methodist Church in Dothan, Alabama at 2:00 pm on Sunday, December 17, 2023 with Bishop Lawson Bryan officiating.

The Venture Bros. #6: “The Incredible Mr. Brisby” | August 28, 2004 - 11:00 PM | S01E04

Another really strong Venture Bros. In this one, Dr. Venture meets with Roy Brisby, the show’s obvious parody of Disney. He meets him at his theme park, Brisbyland, which he inexplicably forbids the boys from enjoying. Turns out Brisby wants Venture to help clone him, so his empire may live on. This is the first broadcast mention of cloning, which wouldn’t pay off until the premiere of season two.

Meanwhile, Brock has a run in with a mercenary rival of his, Molotov Cocktease. They were romantically involved and have a brutal fight which eventually turns into almost-love-making. Since yesterday’s post had a lot to do with standards and practices I’ll mention this here: several episodes of The Venture Bros. were rated TV-14 when they first aired but were re-rated to TV-MA on subsequent rebroadcasts. I would guess Janet Jackson’s beautiful titty was what helped those state of affairs, but this aired months after that? I don’t know, man. Should I stop this write-up in it’s tracks to discuss how fucked up it is that Justin Timberlake received absolutely zero blowback from actually being the person who tore Janet Jackson’s wardrobe, letting us see her wonderful and spectacular pierced nip? Nah. Some GIRL can blog about that. I have important MAN stuff to write about (cartoons).

The plot THICKENS! The titular Venture Bros. wind up getting kidnapped by an anti-Brisby resistance group, which eventually invades Brisbyland. Another firsts in this episode (cloning and Molotov Cocktease were the others) is a mention of David Bowie. He wasn’t a “character” in the show yet, and I’m not actually sure at what point this starts happening in the series. But it’s an interesting footnote, I GUESS. Also, while we’re talking firsts, Brisby is one of the few specific firsts that we actually saw in the PILOT; one of the boys has a BIZZY BEE wallet, and a times square hooker is seen wearing one of the same Bizzy Bee hats that are shown in this episode. I moaned earlier about how “Careers in Science” was grandfathered in as an essential, unskippable episode due to the show’s respect for continuity, but I actually respect it. And you gotta respect me, for respecting it.

Me too! I remember disliking it when it first aired but I was at peak snobbery back then. My wife is a fan and had the official unofficial DVDs (for a while the creator sold a copy of his “video reel” and when you bought it was just the whole series of Downtown). I’ll revisit it sometime.

Ah, a simpler time, when Adult Swim shows couldn't be rude about religion and even Futurama had to censor Professor Farnsworth saying "sweet zombie jesus" Weird to think about now that Adult Swim just airs showings of Religulous every night. The Nuge no likee!

Remember when Bill Maher went on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and seemed sorta like he genuinely thought he ACTUALLY WAS his character from the Colbert Report? Like he kept making references to him being a Republican and stuff? Did I dream this? I feel like they got sidetracked talking about Colbert’s actual/genuine Christian faith and didn’t address the elephant in the room that Maher is a re-taher and doesn’t know Stephen Colbert from Stephen Colbert. What a putz! But, it’s not so nice to talk ill of the dead. Rest in peace, Bill.

Ernest Torrence (born Ernest Torrance-Thomson, 26 June 1878 – 15 May 1933) was a Scottish film character actor who appeared in many Hollywood films, including Broken Chains (1922) with Colleen Moore, Mantrap (1926) with Clara Bow and Fighting Caravans (1931) with Gary Cooper and Lili Damita. A towering (6' 4") figure, Torrence frequently played cold-eyed and imposing villains.

He was born to Colonel Henry Torrence Thayson and Jessie (née Bryce)[1] on 26 June 1878, in Edinburgh, Scotland, and as a child was an exceptional pianist and operatic baritone and graduated from the Stuttgart Conservatory, Edinburgh Academy before earning a scholarship at London's Royal Academy of Music. He toured with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in such productions as The Emerald Isle (1901), Little Hans Andersen (1903) and The Talk of the Town (1905) before disarming vocal problems set in and he was forced to abandon this career path.

Sometime prior to 1900, he changed the spelling of Torrance to Torrence and dropped the name Thomson. Both Ernest and his actor brother David Torrence went to America, with Ernest joining David in New York in September 1911. Focusing on a purely acting career, Ernest and his brother developed into experienced players on the Broadway New York stage. Ernest received significant acclaim with Modest Suzanne in 1912, and a prominent role in The Night Boat in 1920 brought him to the attention of the early Hollywood filmmakers.

Torrence played the despicable adversary Luke Hatburn in Tol'able David (1921) opposite Richard Barthelmess and immediately settled into films for the rest of his career and life. He played an old codger in the acclaimed classic western The Covered Wagon (1923) and gained attention from his roles in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) as Clopin, king of the beggars, and with Betty Bronson in Peter Pan (1924) as the dastardly Captain Hook. He played an Army General who escapes into the circus world and becomes a clown in The Side Show of Life (1924).

In an offbeat bit of casting he paired up with Clara Bow in Mantrap (1926), unusually as a gentle, giant type backwoodsman in search of a wife. He appeared in other silent film classics such as The King of Kings (1927) (as Peter) and Steamboat Bill, Jr. (1928) as Buster Keaton's steamboat captain father. During the course of his twelve-year film career, Ernest made 49 films, both silent and "talkies".

Torrence made the transition into talking films very well, starring in Fighting Caravans (1931) with Gary Cooper and Lili Damita. He was able to play a notable nemesis, Dr. Moriarty, to Clive Brook's Sherlock in Sherlock Holmes (1932) in one of his last roles.

Filming for I Cover the Waterfront (1933), in which he starred as a smuggler opposite Claudette Colbert in New York City, had just been completed when he died suddenly on 15 May 1933. While en route to Europe by ship, Torrence suffered an acute attack of gall stones and was rushed back to a New York City hospital. He died of complications following surgery.

‘BAFTA A Life in Pictures: Martin Freeman’ to take place on Saturday 22 June  

London, 28 May 2019: The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has today announced that BAFTA-winning actor Martin Freeman will discuss his career at a ‘BAFTA: A Life in Pictures’ event on Saturday 22 June.

‘BAFTA A Life in Pictures’ is a long-running series of onstage interviews in which some of the world’s leading film and television talent share insights into the experiences that helped them hone and develop their craft. The series has previously hosted figures including Annette Bening, Kenneth Branagh, Cate Blanchett, Viola Davis, Chiwetel Ejiofor, David Fincher, Hugh Grant, Keira Knightley Sam Mendes, Helen Mirren, Alan Rickman, Vanessa Redgrave, Martin Scorsese, Kristin Scott Thomas, Meryl Streep, Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet.

Martin Freeman first came to public attention in the BAFTA-winning British sitcom The Office, for which he received his first BAFTA nomination in 2004. Early film credits include Love Actually (2003), Shaun of the Dead (2004) and Hot Fuzz (2007), as well as lead roles in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005) and Confetti (2006).

In 2011 Freeman won a BAFTA for playing Dr John Watson in the TV series Sherlock, in which he stars alongside Benedict Cumberbatch, and received a further BAFTA nomination in 2012, as well as an Emmy in 2014. Other major roles include Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit film trilogy (2012, 2013 and 2014) and Lester Nygaard in the award-winning Coen Brothers’ television adaptation of Fargo, which earned him Golden Globe and Emmy ‘Best Actor’ nominations. In 2016 Freeman first appeared as Everett K Ross in the Marvel blockbuster Captain America: Civil War, before reprising the role in Black Panther (2018), winner of the 2019 Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

Later this year, Martin Freeman will star in Jeff Pope’s six-part drama A Confession with Imelda Staunton. Freeman is also the co-creator and executive producer of new FX/SKY/Avalon comedy series Breeders, which chronicles the trials and tribulations of parenthood. Forthcoming feature films include The Operative alongside Diane Kruger, and Ode to Joy, from Modern Family director Jason Winer and The Colbert Report writer Max Werner.

Freeman’s stage credits include Pinter Seven - A Slight Ache / The Dumb Waiter at the Harold Pinter Theatre, Richard III at Trafalgar Studios, Clybourne Park and Kosher Harry at the Royal Court Theatre, and Blue Eyes and Heels at the Soho Theatre.

John Hope Franklin (January 2, 1915 – March 25, 2009) was an American historian of the United States and former president of Phi Beta Kappa, the Organization of American Historians, the American Historical Association, and the Southern Historical Association. Franklin is best known for his work From Slavery to Freedom, first published in 1947, and continually updated. More than three million copies have been sold. In 1995, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor.

A native of Oklahoma and a graduate of Fisk University, he received M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in history from Harvard University (this photo is from his Harvard University admissions file, 1935.) He has taught at a number of institutions, including Fisk University, St. Augustine's College, North Carolina Central University, and Howard University. Professor Franklin's has published numerous books and articles. His best-known book is From Slavery to Freedom: A History of African-Americans, now in its seventh edition.

Franklin was born in Rentiesville, Oklahoma in 1915 to attorney Buck (Charles) Colbert Franklin (1879-1957) and his wife Mollie (Parker) Franklin. He was named after John Hope, a prominent educator who was the first African-American president of Atlanta University.

Franklin's father Buck Colbert Franklin was a civil rights lawyer, aka "Amazing Buck Franklin." He was of African-American and Choctaw ancestry and born in the Chickasaw Nation in western Indian Territory (formerly Pickens County). He was the seventh of ten children born to David and Milley Franklin. David was a former slave, who became a Chickasaw Freedman when emancipated after the American Civil War. Milley was born free before the war and was of one-fourth Choctaw and three-fourths African-American ancestry. Buck Franklin became a lawyer.

Buck Franklin is best known for defending African-American survivors of the 1921 Tulsa race riot, in which whites had attacked many blacks and buildings, and burned and destroyed the Greenwood District. This was known at the time as "Black Wall Street", and was the wealthiest Black community in the United States, a center of black commerce and culture. Franklin and his colleagues also became experts at oil law, representing "blacks and Native Americans in Oklahoma against white lawyers representing oil barons." His career demonstrated a strong professional black life in the West, at a time when such accomplishments would have been more difficult to achieve in the Deep South.

John Hope Franklin graduated from Booker T. Washington High School (then segregated) in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He graduated in 1935 from Fisk University, a historically black university in Nashville, Tennessee, and earned a doctorate in history in 1941 from Harvard University.

Franklin married Aurelia Whittington on June 11, 1940. She was a librarian. Their only child, John Whittington Franklin, was born August 24, 1952. Their marriage lasted 59 years, until January 27, 1999, when Aurelia succumbed to a long illness

In 1993, he published The Color Line: Legacy for the Twenty-first Century. More than three million copies have been sold. Professor Franklin wrote a biography of his father, which he edited with his son, John Whittington Franklin.

In 1995, he received the first W.E.B. Du Bois Award from the Fisk University Alumni Association and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor. Dr. Franklin has received honorary degrees from more than 100 colleges and universities. Dr. Franklin has also been the recipient of many other honors.

Professor Franklin served as chair of the advisory board for One America: The President's Initiative on Race. He is a past president of the American Historical Association and was Professor Emeritus of History at Duke University.

In 2005, at the age of 90, Franklin published and lectured on his new autobiography, Mirror to America: The Autobiography of John Hope Franklin. In 2006, Mirror to America received the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights Book Award, which is given annually to honor authors "whose writing, in illuminating past or present injustice, acts as a beacon towards a more just society."

In 2006, he also received the John W. Kluge Prize and as the recipient lectured on the successes and failures of race relations in America in Where do We Go from Here? In 2008, Franklin endorsed presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Franklin died at Duke University Medical Center on the morning of March 25, 2009.
