Child learning in pre-primary education
Preschool believes that children learn best through play. We, as practitioners, appreciate the learning which takes place when children are able to follow their own ideas and are supported by an adult who can enable their learning by respecting, understanding and allowing children empowerment over their environment. We celebrate a child’s uniqueness and encourage respect and social interaction.
The modern prospectus of early childhood education all those concerned with the teaching of pre-school children should have clear aims and objectives. Aim is a long term targeted declaration that a preschool should achieve.
Teachers in Finland have extensive pedagogical autonomy in choosing the teaching methods and materials as long as they are in line with the goals defined in steering documents and support learning and well-being of children.
Pre-primary education is to provide a learning environment, which will guide children’s curiosity, interest and learning motivation and give them opportunities for play, other activities as well as for rest and silence. The essential factors of the learning environment include interaction between the teacher and each child and that between the children, different operating methods and learning assignments...read more at - https://eacea.ec.europa.eu/.

Learning Goals In A PreSchool :
Children learn a great deal in preschool. The emphasis is on the cognitive development of the child as learning is due to practice and interaction in a big group.
Social interaction is the second most important feature of Pre school education. The kids learn to interact with children of their own age in a supervised environment.
Playing with mud, holding crayons, practicing free colouring and writing on board helps in motor development of the children. Both fine motor & gross motor development takes place by the various activities performed in the classroom under the supervision of trained teachers.
The child is prepared for the curriculum of the structured schools.
They learn to identify their belongings like their own bag, tiffin, napkin and water bottle. These are the real treasures of the children of this age.

Aims for Children:
aim to ensure that each child:
Is in a safe and stimulating environment
Is given generous care and attention; because of our ratio of qualified staff to children, as well as volunteer parent helpers;
Has the chance to join with other children and adults to play, work, and learn together;
Has a personal key person to ensure that each child makes satisfying progress;
Is in a setting that sees parents as partners in helping each child to learn and develop;
Is in a setting in which parents help to maintain the services that it offers.

Develops an Enthusiasm for Learning
As kids learn their initial lessons through different play and structured activities, it lays the foundation for learning and also develops their imagination power. The thirst to acquire more knowledge and not rest until the satisfactory answers have been obtained is built at this very stage. The basics of reading and writing are covered in these schools and also help a child realize the importance of education in life.
Fosters Socializing Skills
Early childhood education aims to develop friendships among children belonging to the same age group. These schools provide the kids with an environment that encourages interaction with other kids, builds strong friendships, and also helps them come out of their comfort zones. As a result, a child can overcome his/her shyness and mingle with others thus promoting social development.

Promotes Holistic Development
Education in early days guarantees all round development of the child. The environment in such schools lays the foundation for a kid's physical, social, emotional and mental development which are crucial factors for later stages in life. As a kid gets an environment where he/she can freely express ideas and feelings, it helps to identify the weak areas of the child and also determine what steps must be taken or what support should be given to overcome those weaknesses...know more at - https://vocal.media/.

Starting out as a Childminder
Childminding is not as easy as it may seem thinking about it. I decided to become a childminder after having my second baby, because i wanted to go back to work and after becomming a mum it is very difficult to find a job to fit around your schedule.
below i have listed the pros and cons of becomming a childminder.
Pros:
Can work the times and days you want
Can charge what you like
Can spend more time with your own children
Cons:
You have to stick to ratios and include your own children
You have to consider child care on sick days and won’t be paid for them
Your home will not feel your own
It's exhausting
Like any other job there will be good days and bad days. Some days you will love your job and some days you will be stressed and cannot wait for theday to end. Childminding is very unappreciated in some aspects and we don’t always get the thanks that we deserve. You need to be organised, prepared, and patient. And remember that your not on your own. there are always people to talk to when you need to ask questions or have a rant.
To set up your business there are a lot of steps to take and it is a vey timely process ranging from 1-2 years.
Childminders care for children on a domestic premesis this would usually beyour own home.
You need your qualification. You can take a course specifically in childminding or take a level 3 course (1 year) which is the one i took. Keep your options open, if you take the level 3 you can use this to go into a nursery if you was to change your mind.
You need to apply to go on thechild care register, which there are two of:
The Early Years Register is compulsory for you if you are planning on caring for young children (until the child has reached the end of the reception year in school)
The Childcare Register has 2 parts:
The Compulsory part of the Childcare Register is for you if you are planning on caring for children aged 5-7 years.
The Voluntary part of the Childcare Register is for childminders caring only for children over 8 years.
You don't have to apply with Ofsted if you are only looking after children over the age of 8, look after children less than 2 hours a day, are the child's parent/guardian, care for children in their own home, babysitting between 6pm and 2am, only tutoring.
i applied for both, because i offered holiday care i could look after children of school age as well.
If you live in a rented property:
If you live in rented accomodation you need to check with the terms of your rental/leasehold agreement to see if you are allowed to operate a childminding business from home. You will certainly need your landlords/leaseholders written permission.
There may be a clause in the agreement that states you can't operate a business from the house, but the landlord/leasholder can change this clause if they choose to. Sometimes a proffessional conversation explaining the registration requirements, risk assessing etc. alongside what insurances are in place can help a landlord/leaseholder to see that there isn’t an huge increased risk to allowing a person to childmind from the property. It is recommended that you discuss this directly with the landlord/leaseholder and not their agent.
If there is a mortgage on the property, there may be a clause that says a business can’t be run from the property, but childminding businesses are often looked at slightly differently to any other business and may excluded from this.
There is tenants insurance for fixtures and fittings that a childminder can purchase to help reassure a landlord/leasholder their property is covered by insurance and allay any fears about extra damage to the property.
If you are allowed to childmind from the property, expect to provide any extra safety equipment needed such as fire blanket, stair gates etc. yourself and make good any fixing holes etc. before you move out.
If the landlord/leaseholder still insists you can't childmind from their property, there is nothing else you can do as it is their choice whether they allow childminding or not.
Once you have done all of the above you will then need to:
Do a child protection course (you can do this online, some councils like you to have this done face to face aswel. But i went by what Ofsted advised and only done mine online) Refresher every 6 months.
Do a safeguarding course (online) Refresher every 3-6 months.
Food safety and Hygene Level 1 course (online)
Female Genital Mutilation Course (online) Refresher every 6 months.
Some of these courses cost (£20-£40) it’s worth looking around for the best price and that you get a certificate once completed.
be registered on the Early Years Register and/or the Childcare Register. (£35) for under 5′s. And (£104) for 5-7 years.
hold an up to date paediatric first aid certificate. To renew every 3 years (around £90)
Be on Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checked. Find out more information (£52.10, anyone over 16 who lives or works with you needs a DBS). Update service is not a requirement anymore but costs £13 per year if you choose to do this (handy if you want to go into a nursery). This could take a few months to complete.
You also need your documents checked by a professional or if the post office check them this costs around £10.50.
You will need to show the professional your ID documents, like a:
passport
driving licence
utility bills
bank statement
Get your Health deceleration booklet filled in by your doctor (£35) Do this asap, this could take a few weeks to get done. Download the form here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/become-a-childcare-provider-health-declaration Email and post to Ofsted. Always keep a copy as they tend to lose it. [email protected]
complete a childcare course (£250-£400)
Pacey Membership (£59.50)
have appropriate insurance cover, including Public Liability Insurance. (£28.90) with Pacey, but haeto be a member.
ICO registration (must have for data protection) (£40)
Deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage for children on the Early Years Register. Keep upto date with the Early Years Foundation Stage
Let your local council know. give them a call find out who deals with childminders in your area.
Have your policies and procedures in place. Do not necesarrily need them printed but kept on a computer when needed. I use Twinkl for this as they have them all. Always double check them to make sure they are up to date and have allthe relevant information.
Ofsted will come out to you to do an audit, make sure you have everything you need and test your knowledge. This could take 2-5 hours nd will mark you Met or Not Met. All inspectors are different and have there own way of doing things.
Some of the things they are hot on are:
Female Genital Mutilation (FMG)
Safeguarding Procedures, what to look out for and what to do.
DBS certificate
First Aid certificate
Course Certificate
Home insurance (business)
Car Insurance (business)
Utility bills (last 3 months, showing address)
Observations
3 planned activities covering all areas (Ofsted will tell you the age ranges you are required to cover) - Good actiivities that cover all areas are, Playdough, sensory baskets, sand and water play.
Know the EYFS from the back of your hand.
Doing a SEF is not a requirement anymore, but always worth having so you are prepared and can go back on your notes if you need to.
Childminder First Aid box
Fire blanket / Extiguisher
Accident and Incidents, Medical procedures
Procedure for Lost child on outings (Emergency cards, alert staff etc)
Keeping parents upto date with day to day routines and activities (Diaries, newsletters, meetings)
Keep alcohol and harmful substances locked away
Make sure garden is child safe
Fire alarm risk assessments
Diversity in childcare (books, dolls, posters, toys etc)
Toys, arts and crafts, books, outdoor equipement
How do you plan on children keeping physically active (3 hours a day) park, garden, outings etc.
Keeping doors and gates locked
drop of and collection precedure
Consider Sleeping areas
Data Protection ( where will you store your data and files)
Register self employed with HM Revenue
You cannot start childminding until you have recieved your certificate from Ofsted.
Apply for childcare grant through the government. You could be entitled to £500 (Not looking after SEN children) - £1000 (SEN children) include this is finances as a wage.
The start up costs of Childminding can be between £1500 - £2000.

Independent Learning Activities for Kids
When a child thinks and acts independently, a learning process takes place that can be more beneficial than any other type of learning. Thinking and acting independently are two of the most important skills any individual can have and by nurturing this skill from a young age, we can create young adults that will continue to be independent thinkers for the rest of their lives, way beyond the classroom.
Cultures are individualistic, and independence is an important part of our views on the world. Teachers and parents have an extremely important role to play in the development of children but cannot remain next to their side every step they take. They are simply facilitators because one of the pre-requisites of independent learning activities for kids is being able to work on your own, solving problems with minimal guidance and enough confidence. This includes activities both in the classroom and outdoor learning areas.
It is a question that arises often; how much help should I give my child or pupil if I also want to encourage independent learning activities? Another question that is asked is; how can I be sure that my child or pupil is developing skills independently if I am not working closely with them? There is a fine line between the two and faith in the child must be present.
What is Independent Learning?
Independent learning is a method of gaining skills and knowledge through pretend play, exploration of different ideas and creation of new and unique ideas. Experiencing these will lead to the development of an intelligent, confident, self-reliant and motivated individual that is capable of critical thinking and decision making.
Children that have more control over their learning and are therefore independent learners and thinkers tend to have more self-confidence. On the other hand, children that are provided with excessive help and support do not have the opportunity to think for themselves and prevents them from solving problems and working their way through difficulties.
The concept of learning independently has grown in popularity over recent years, and now it is common to see schools incorporate activities that promote this type of learning. It is a method of learning which is found throughout primary and secondary schools, and much of Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) development is based on the independent development concept.
Encouraging Independent Learning Skills
There are many ways that a child’s independent learning opportunities can be created. As mentioned earlier, it can be quite difficult to know how much assistance to provide and how much assistance not to provide and finding a balance is all about trial and error.
Present the child with an open environment – Children are very used to the same classroom environment where they sit and listen to teachers. Real independent activities will take place in an open environment that provides opportunities to talk and write about what they learn.
Reward initiative – Positive feedback should be presented when a child shows initiative.
Encourage exploration/research projects – Children should be able to choose what they learn about, and discover what they enjoy.
Play pretend – Encourage art and drama when discussing topics, for example, a play may help the students think more independently about the concepts being taught.
Encourage brainstorming – Allow children to formulate and ask their own questions whilst presenting their own ideas.
Focus on the positive – Don’t worry too much about things that aren’t working, just focus on which parts are going well.
Benefits of Learning Independently
Independent thinking and thinking skills are a solid base for the development of great leadership skills and by nurturing these skills from a young age, children can make sense of the world from personal experience and observations, whilst making suitable, well-informed decisions.
Independent learning helps children think creatively, encourage curiosity and leads to much more meaningful discoveries, than just being told the answer to something. As children make mistakes through their own learning and within a safe environment they will gain confidence which will help them build successful futures. This also helps to contribute to their health and activity levels which you can read more about in this post.
The benefits of self-learning are well documented. Through working independently, a child learns HOW to learn, rather than being spoon-fed information, but they also understand the whole process rather than just the goal or end outcome. The process of learning is just as important as reaching the final goal, and often classrooms can restrict that process by placing it within four walls. The self-confidence that is developed through independent learning activities for kids is accompanied by a sense of internal satisfaction and they are more aware of their own strengths and weaknesses.
Finally, passion and curiosity are two extremely important emotions and behaviour that can often be lost when things become methodical or routine. Through learning independently, children can still use passion and curiosity to help achieve their goals.
Pupil-Led Outdoor Play Activities
Outdoors is seen as one of the best learning environments. The large open spaces and the array of natural resources encourage children to explore using their imagination and incorporate their problem-solving skills. By giving children the tools necessary to explore at their own will and in their own time allows them to make their own discoveries. See our recent post on school playground markings to find out more about different floor designs.
Pupil-led outdoor play activities such as growing plants, wildlife spotting, bug hunting and pond dipping are all simple yet exciting activities that can be led by the children rather than the teacher. These activities allow children to use their imaginations and involve elements of play pretend into the process, all of which will help improve their creative thinking, grow their independence and confidence and develop their problem-solving.
Playground Equipment and Games
Installing certain playground equipment will help children to learn whilst they play through activities like climbing, building dens and basic structures. Using these types of playground equipment will also help encourage teamwork and allow children to provide each other with constructive feedback as they work alongside each other.
Outdoor play activities that are pupil led not only provide great opportunities for developing skills independently, but they also have amazing benefits towards positive mental health; there have been numerous studies that have discovered the relationship between green spaces and good mental health.
Spending time outside is hugely beneficial for young people and the positive effects on mental health can work in favour for students, schools and benefits can work their way onwards and throughout communities.

A New Organization Of School Time
Today most of the country with a school already offer extra-curricular activities within the framework of a territorial education project, which represents a maximum of students enrolled in nursery schools in Dubai.
The nursery school welcomes children from three to five years of age for teaching mainly based on social integration, personality structuring, and basic cultural acquisitions. Training objectives are translated into behavioral terms, actions and eyfs curriculum. Educational situations enable these objectives to be realized, in a context where the acquisition of know-how is favored.
The child-reader training incorporates a behavioral dimension and a pre-reading approach. Learning related to this approach and verbal language currently dominate the concerns of teachers, National Inspectors of Education and parents. The pre-reading is approached by the typological analysis of proposed texts. The need for language coding is gradually revealed, and children realize the importance of memorizing texts on paper, as well as drawings and graphics. In the large section, the pupils are also led to produce their own writings which allow the control of the evolution of their manual skill and their lateralization.
Identifying and knowing why different writings (books, magazines, newspapers, dictionaries, posters, advertisements, maps, documentary writings, letters) are used:
Recognize the organization of a page; Using a library (learning about first rankings); Participate in the development of a classroom library; Identify certain properties of objects in order to compare them, sort them, classify them, order them.
The book holds a privileged place in preschool activity, and is, in turn, a reference, memory, and sometimes even a collective production of children. The development of a central library room was one of the important elements of the structure set up from the beginning.
Early attendance at a library-document center and books in the classroom learns how to use resources. Through the intermediary of the teacher, the child gradually recognizes the supports, the forms and the functions of the writing (activities of communication and of spoken and written expression).
Since then, children have regularly borrowed books that become objects of effective. They are transported in specially made covers for this purpose. The pupils of kindergarten should not be considered as non-readers, but rather as pre-readers of texts. In order to encourage children's autonomy in managing the library while empowering them, the idea came to computerize loan management by making the software accessible to children. There were many difficulties to circumvent. New technologies can today provide solutions to the problems of communication between a child of 3 to 5 years and a computer machine. In fact, Child does not yet know how to interpret a written instruction, it includes an oral instruction and can, therefore, answer it verbally or by an action. He also knows how to "read" an image for purposes of comparison, description, control. A new circulation of child-machine information can be observed.

PED2022 - Maths - Session 10
Early Years 1: Continuous Provision and Role Play
What do we need to know about Early Years?
Transition
Differentiation
Mixed age phases
Areas of Learning and Development
The Early Years Foundation Stage Framework specifies seven areas of learning and development
Mathematics forms one of the core areas of learning and development and the aspects are: numbers, shape, space and measures.
Key Documents
EYFS Development Matters document published in 2008.
Non-statutory guidance supporting the implementation of the EYFS framework. Underpinned by four themes:
A Unique Child
Positive Relationships
Enabling Environments
Learning and Development.
Early Years Outcomes was published in 2013.
Non-statutory guidance – useful reference tool for practitioners. Supports practitioners in making best-fit judgements about a child’s development. However, it does not mention two of the four themes in the EYFS development matters – positive relationships and enabling environments.
The positive relationships section within the EYFS Development Matters highlights the importance and the role of the adult in a child’s learning; this provides key ideas for practitioners in supporting a child.
The enabling environments column supports practitioners in providing a positive and rich learning environment for the children to extend learning opportunities and suggests next steps for development.
Another area missing from the Early Years Outcomes document is the Characteristics of Effective Learning, which are:
Playing and exploring
Active learning
Thinking critically
The Early Years Outcomes document is specifically mentioned in OfSTED’s guidance.
Thus both documents should be used alongside each other in order to fully support children.
What is Early Years Pedagogy?
• The EYFS promotes mathematical learning through play.
“Play is undoubtedly enjoyable for young children owing to the freedom it facilitates, the sense of ownership it affords, and the self esteem it promotes. Through play children can repeat, rehearse and refine skills, displaying what they do know and practising what they are beginning to understand”
- Tucker, K. (2010) Mathematics Through Play in the Early Years. London: Sage.
Mathematical Learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage
Pilot school for the Foundation Phase in 2004 at an infant school in Wales: how the nursery and Reception classes are ensuring mathematical development within the play-based curriculum.

Learning mathematics through role play
Children can:
- Explore various mathematical concepts related to money, capacity, size, weight, one-to-one correspondence.
- Use mathematical vocabulary e.g. how much, full, empty, need more/less, heavy, light.
- problem solve through imaginative play e.g. how much money will I need to buy this item? How many cups will I need for the family?
- develop concept of time – breakfast, dinner, bed-time, time in doctors surgery. Refer to clocks, watches.
- order, sort, match in role-play area.
youtube
Planning for role play – Group Activity and Presentation
Create an activity using role play which can support children’s learning in Mathematics.
