Let's talk about how different Madrigals are holding cups. (I promise, you desperately need this information)
Mirabel and Agústin(?) are really the same. Holding the cup with three fingers while others are clenched. But Mirabel's fingers pressed to her palm while Agustin's are hung a bit free
Luisa is the only one who picks up the cup from the upper part instead of a handle. Uses thumb and middle fingers
Felix uses thumb and index fingers. But his free fingers aren't closed. He also seems to take the cup in much more elegant/aristocratic way (And I also thought that it was Isabela

Mirabel Analysis
I'm working my way through a Mirabel focused AU and I feel like her characterization isn't quite right. So! It's time to sit down and get some shit figured out!
So once all the exposition is out of the way, the first character moment Mirabel gets is when that small child says "If I were you, I'd be really sad" and Mirabel immediately denies any unhappiness. She says something along the lines of being just as special as the rest of her family, gift or no gift. Immediately after this (and a brief run in with Isabela which establishes their dynamic) we see Mirabel's parents tell her basically the same thing. They are actually extremely supportive and say everything she needs to hear. Thus we can conclude that, at least in regards to her parents, Mirabel has been surrounded with all the right messages, and can even repeat them back to other people, but she has not absorbed any of it.
Important Character Trait 1: Mirabel has emotional intelligence from the get go, but has not internalized it, or applied any of it to the real world.
Next, we get the scene between Mirabel and Abuela, in which Abuela suggests Mirabel stays out of the way. In this scene we quickly see that Mirabel is skilled in more than just embroidery, is detail oriented (carefully adjusts candle holders to be just right), thoughtful, and clumsy when nervous. It's also clear that she's seeking approval from Abuela specifically, and we can conclude she looks up to Abuela. I also think it's noteworthy that Mirabel didn't make herself a candle holder, because she clearly isn't stepping around anything when she enters the nursery. This combined with the fact that she later doesn't join the photo when Abuela shouts "Everybody come!" are great ways to show she doesn't see herself as being a part of the family.
Important Character Trait 2: Wants Abuela's approval.
Important Character Trait 3: Feels separated from the family.
Next we have her interaction's with Antonio. Obviously the gift she made him further proves how thoughtful she is, and the way she talks to him shows us just how much she loves her family. I also think it's noteworthy that the first hint of true vulnerability we see from her is with Antonio. When he first asks for her help, she doesn't put on a brave face, she honestly tells him she can't. This makes the fact that she does end up helping him all the more important because we have been at once shown how much this will hurt her, and that she values Antonio enough to put herself through that. In addition, Antonio's actions demonstrate what an important role Mirabel is already playing in her family. Whether or not she realizes it, she is the person Antonio trusts above all others, she is who he reaches for when he's scared. Later we see other family members show similar trust in Mirabel, which is telling. This just furthers my suspicions that Mirabel was so focused on gaining Abuela's approval that she never fully digested how important to her family she is.
Important Character Trait 4: Willing to sacrifice for others.
This segues into her song, Waiting on a Miracle. I saw somebody point out that it's more about accepting her own unhappiness than it is about anything else. That makes the song an important moment for character development because I believe that it's only once she opens up to how not fine she is that she can begin to internalize what her parent's have been telling her all along.
Then we get the cracks, and Mirabel immediately runs to tell Abuela and honestly was probably trying to get everybody out of the house. I mean, she had every reason to believe it was collapsing. Rewatching the scene I do think it's interesting that Mirabel doesn't mention the miracle being in danger, just the house. She mentions that the candle almost went out, but she doesn't equate the cracks to the miracle weakening. Abuela does.
In the kitchen with her mother we get the second glimpse of Mirabel being vulnerable with another character. When Julieta says Mirabel is just as special as everybody else in the family, instead of blithely agreeing, Mirabel points out Julieta's healing abilities. Juli denies that it is her food that heals Mirabel, and instead says its her love and goes on to talk Mirabel up. This helps Mirabel in the short term, but in the long term Mirabel stays up thinking about the cracks, goes to investigate, overhears Abuela's prayers, and gets the plot rolling.
When she approaches "Dolores" she doesn't bother trying to convince her the cracks were real, instead she assumes that Dolores already knows. And why wouldn't she? She knows everything about everyone. There's the whole fun scene at breakfast, then Mirabel chasing after Luisa, Luisa's absolute bop. And the next notable moment is Mirabel telling Luisa she's carrying too much. Notice it isn't Mirabel who gets the conversation back on track, but Luisa. Mirabel had set her own problem aside to comfort her sister. This is another tick mark for "Willing to sacrifice".
The climb up to Bruno's vision cave is fucking ridiculous, I would have given up halfway up the stairs. Probably more like a third of the way, if we're being honest.
Important Character Trait 5: Determined/stubborn.
Sees the vision, asks questions, We Don't Talk About Bruno. "Seven foot frame". Instant regret. Then her confession to her Papa. She doesn't try to hide the vision for more than like a second, and she isn't prompted into telling him everything, she just does that. Now that I'm thinking about this, and the thing earlier where she immediately ran to Abuela when she saw the cracks, I am seeing a strong lack of dishonesty. It's not that she's an especially honest character, because she has presumably spent the past ten years lying to herself about being happy, but she is an especially not dishonest one.
Important Character Trait 6: Not dishonest.
Dinner happens, and believing that marrying Mariano is what Isabela wants, Mirabel doesn't just try to hide the cracks, she tries to get Mariano to hurry up and propose. At least, that's how I see that scene. After everything falls a part, she does briefly fall into the trap of blaming Bruno for his vision, but gets over that by the time she's done chasing him through the walls. It's not an important character trait, but I do love that the writers made her brave, not fearless. When she thinks she's hanging over the abyss, she calls out and even begs for help. It's a small detail, but I feel like it makes her more real.
Anyways, the scene where we meet Bruno. Instant love for that man, but we're not talking about him (we don't talk about Bruno). Bruno telling her that he left to protect her is the first big sign of love she receives since she's started this journey. And it's followed by Mirabel accepting the responsibility of the prophecy then telling Bruno "Sometimes family weirdos just get a bad rap", showing that she's gaining more confidence. She has admitted that she isn't happy, that she feels like an odd one out, but having done that is now able to see acts of love or trust for what they are, and internalize what she's been saying from the start. She is just as capable as everybody else.
Notice too, the difference in her reaction to Bruno's pep talk, in comparison to the pep talks she got from her mother. She's not just hearing encouraging words anymore, she's listening to them.
Now that she's moving forward, and starting to believe all that wise stuff she knows, we get the scene with Isabela. Mirabel's eyes are opened and she's able to accept that Isabela has also been dealing with her own insecurity. Because she can now connect with Isabela and see the similarities in their experiences, when Abuela starts yelling at her, instead of internalizing it, Mirabel has her epiphany. After all, if even perfect Isabela has to worry about her place in the family, than what does that say about the family. More importantly, what does that say about the head of the family.
The final important character moment before the resolution and falling action. When Mirabel realizes the source of the family's issues is Abuela, she doesn't initially respond with the compassion she later arrives at. Her first response is anger. She yells at Abuela, points fingers, doesn't stop even as cracks form around her.
I think this is important, because I think the reason all of this fell on Mirabel was that the adults had already reached the point where they understood where Abuela was coming from and were trying to be compassionate. The family dynamic is supposed to be unstable, but not wholly abusive, and the root of the story is generational trauma. In that sort of dynamic, you have a lot of people who understand why they're parent/grandparent acts the way they do, and they have sympathy for them. The actions may be wrong, but the emotions behind them are valid and understandable, and most importantly, not malicious. We see Julieta and Agustin confront Abuela, Pepa snaps back at Abuela whenever she points out the clouds, and Bruno clearly didn't think Abuela's views on the world were wholly accurate. But none of them pointed out exactly how much harm Abuela was doing. Mirabel gets through to Abuela because she arrives at the realization that Abuela is doing harm, before she realizes how much pain Abuela is in. She is able to say point blank "You're hurting us" without worrying about Abuela's own trauma.
So, in conclusion...
Important Character Trait 7: Is still learning.

Poking a dead horse here— do you think if Tangled came out today, they would still have gone with the supposed 8 year gap between Rapunzel and Eugene? Or do you think times have changed and they wouldn’t do that now?
THERE WAS NEVER A SUPPOSED EIGHT YEAR AGE GAP!
Eugene does not have a canonical age in the movie at the time that the movie came out. The directors said they interpreted him as being between 22 and 24 after the fact. Just because the internet at large latched onto 26 doesn't mean it was ever remotely true!
But hot button rant over.
No, I think that now they'd be definitive and specific about his age in the movie either during the movie itself or as a question they were prepared to answer on social media.
When Tangled came out, Twitter was only four years old, and people did not yet think they had unfettered access to the minds (and pencils) behind movies. All the questions I asked Nathan Greno, I did on Facebook, and I only felt brave enough to do so because he had liked and responded to Tangled-related posts I made or comments I made on official Disney posts. It wasn't like it was when Encanto came out and Jared Bush was just fielding questions for months and months after, giving people insight into what their behind the scenes thought processes were.
But, not to be old man yells at cloud about this, I think it was better when people didn't think they had unfettered access to the creative minds (and pencils) behind movies. Back in the day, if we didn't have an answer for something, we just made up a headcanon about it, or thought through logically until we came up with an in-depth analysis. And while I still regularly see analyses about things, people try to get the folks who made the thing to back them up and verify (or justify) their headcanons.
I honestly don't think it matters what characters' exact birthdays are. The only reason Eugene's age matters is because Rapunzel is a very specific age, herself, and was isolated from people for her whole life at the time the movie takes place. And even then, numbers aren't particularly important. Eugene doesn't want to date Rapunzel because she's 18. He falls in love with her as a person, and she happens to be 18, and even the epilogue of the movie says it took them years to get married, which means it wasn't a skeevy grooming situation. (Not to mention, it takes place in ye olden days, when age gaps much larger than theirs were a regular thing, and the wealthy and nobility regularly married people they didn't even know for the sake of politics and business.) People put way too much emphasis on modern sensibilities when watching a movie or series that takes place in decidedly not-modern times.
I do not like purity culture.

Okay, let’s try that again.
Hey, I’m TheLegendCreator. ’Sup, how’s it going. I’m 18, from Louisiana, and I really, really want people to talk to me. I write a lot, I draw even more, and I like writing analyses on Hazbin Hotel. I’m autistic and have an anxiety disorder. High-functioning or low-functioning? Both. I’m occasionally funny.
I’m in (and have been in) a lot of fandoms, so here’s a list:
Beyblade Burst
Encanto
Gravity Falls (pre-Book of Bill)
The Silmarillion
ATLA
Soul Eater
Hazbin Hotel
Noragami
I was only in the Soul Eater fandom for a couple weeks, so I never got around to writing anything for it.
I’m always open for requests and asks. Always.
My AO3 account is TheLegendCreator. That’s my username literally everywhere. I’m on Reddit, too, as Legend__Creator.
My other account is @thelegendcreator. That’s where all of my Encanto stuff is. Go take a look if you want.
If you’ve been here a while, you might have heard of NOT-TLC. That’s Leah, my friend from school. She got me into Hazbin Hotel by showing me “Hell’s Greatest Dad”.
If you think you remember someone with my username on Wattpad—congratulations, you’ve found me! I had to delete my account there, but if you dig deep into the Beyblade Burst fandom, you’ll see me eventually.
I have quite a few favorite characters, so here’s a list. Yeah, another list. I swear I’m not usually this boring.
Alastor the Radio Demon
Bruno Madrigal
Ford Pines
Shu Kurenai
Zuko
Soul “Eater” Evans
Maedhros
Yato
The genre of fanfiction I write wildly varies, depending on the fandom. I don’t write smut often, but when I do, it’s usually either Zukka or Radiostatic.
I’m not a big fan of AUs, outside of Canon Divergence. Unless it’s Modern With Bending. Then I’ll French-kiss that fic, please and thank you.
And down below are some of my favorite people!
@captaintrips9
@walkingweirdmageddon
@thecrazyashley-blog
@diamondkat
@eggcats
@tardis-scooter
(EDIT, because apparently people need it:
I’m not excusing Alastor’s abusive behavior towards Husk. I’m just giving Alastor the overall “not as much of a jerk as you could have been” award. Let Husk be responsible for his actions, let Alastor be responsible for his, and leave me the fuck alone about it. I don’t have the time to slowly walk you all through how Husk’s actions as an Overlord were horrendous. Instead, take a moment to imagine what it would be like to have your soul gambled to an Overlord in the Hellaverse, then get back to me on how you still think Husk was the nicest sweetest kindest Overlord ever.)

Every time I see a new follower on this blog I get a bit nervous because I don't know what you expect from me. It's true that the blog is still active, but without new information I am dormant. There's nothing left for me to think about and analyse :(
So, hey, Encanto fandom, how are you? What are our hopes and dreams at this point?
Tumblr media
Personally, what I wanted most was more content about Dolores and Isabela and we already have two books (I haven't been able to read them, but that they exist makes me happy). I still want an Encanto series, but I'm disappointed that it's going so slowly.
I miss the enthusiasm with which I used to make Encanto fanart. Before the film, I hadn't been so inspired in years. I made six animations. I hadn't drawn that much for any fandom before. I feel like even if we have new content, I'll never be able to match that experience.

We need to talk about Encanto
I've been watching quite a few Disney Animation films lately, and rewatched some of Frozen's and Encanto's musical numbers. And the animation quality is remarkably different. In Frozen it seems they haven't quite found their footing yet with the animation: it's not bad and definitely competent but character animation is still kind of floaty and weightless at times, perhaps closer to their 2D animation style than what other 3D movies were doing. But for that semi realistic 3D style I feel like you probably do need a different approach from 2D, slightly closer to real physics but still with an animated flair (I'm not an Animator though, I'm just trying to analyse my observations). Another thing I noticed was that in several of Frozen's songs they jump a lot between locations without that much continuity, I especially noticed this in "For the First time in Forever" and "Love is an open door". When you compare this to Encanto you can really see how they improved massively over the years, with incredibly detailed character animation that feels fast, dynamic, grounded, and no longer floaty. And the musical sequences are incredibly complex. From the choreography with incredibly many characters to the creative environments and visuals. And unlike in Frozen the shots feel much more connected by a sense of continuity, conveyed through camera motion, character motion, and lighting. The camera motion itself is also very dynamic, especially on the roll axis.
Anyway I kinda just wanted to talk about this because I noticed it and animators are incredible, hard working, and magical artists and we should appreciate them.

Critical Analysis
Jimenez, S. (2022). THE REPRESENTATION OF WOMEN IN DISNEY ANIMATED FILMS. [online] Available at: https://digitalcommons.unomaha.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1189&context=university_honors_program.
Sharik Jimenez’s sociology thesis from the University of Nebraska at Omaha analyses the female representation of women in Disney animated movies. It explores the evolution of female characters through cultural, media, and historical analysis, going from traditional to modernized and independent protagonists. The studies both acknowledge the progress and evolution of the company in challenging norms and underrepresentation in culture, body inclusivity, and the consistency of stereotypes in Disney princess movies. Using reliable sources and examples, it underscores the way media shapes the societal perception of gender and identity.
Over the selection (pages 24-25) the article studies Disney’s depiction of gender roles in their animated princess movies, highlighting the contrast of the traditional portrayals of Cinderella with progressive characters like Mulan. Additionally, it critiques the constant stereotypes that have shaped Disney’s storytelling throughout history. While this analysis covers valid concerns about representation and societal impact, it also oversimplifies some complex issues. This article presents arguments with strengths and limitations and could benefit from deeper exploration.
The critique has strengths as it contrasts Mulan and cinderella, highlighting the evolution of Disney regarding their female protagonists. The analysis examines the submissive and passive roles that early heroines in Disney often play by observing how cinderella is often silenced and interrupted. As this portrayal aligns well with the mid-20th century gender dorms, the contrast with Mulan's break from traditional behavior, showing a female character who goes against expectations to achieve greatness, draws attention to the progression Disney showed in its its storytelling. Moreover, this analysis recognizes the cultural and societal influence of Disney’s representations, illustrating the reciprocal relationship between cultural norms and media. Furthermore, they focus on necessity for Disney to reconsider their gender narratives, and to go beef the superficial characteristics, such as appearance and beauty. This study highlights the need for greater inclusivity and equality in media, emphasizing the importance of changing narratives for younger audiences and considering the important role of children’s media in shaping societal attitudes.
However, while the excerpt appropriately contrasts Cinderella and Mulan, it exaggerates and oversimplifies Disney’s evolution by representing these movies as opposites. Their chosen perspective overlooks the complexity of gender representation. For example, while Cinderella is portrayed as respecting traditional norms, her kindness and diligence are her strengths. Likewise, Mulan does not entirely lack problematic elements, such as her success being implicitly associated with masculine traits like combat skills. A ore refined examination would take into consideration the ways both movies challenged gender norms within their individual historical contexts. Then, the selection critiques Disney’s habit of relying on stereotypes. However, it does not completely explore how these stereotypes are manifested across different movies. For instance, they claim that female leadership is usually associated with the lack of self-control but they don’t provide any example to support this argument. Furthermore, the claim that Disney doesn’t change their corporate culture is quite deistic, taking into consideration their societal shifts and evolving employees. While in the past Disney has undeniably relied on conservative structure, their recent movies such as Frozen and Encanto show a big effort to offer diversified narratives. In Encanto, the main themes are familial roles and finding your identity, without having tonally on a traditional antagonist. This movie showcases more nuanced and significant storytelling. These shifts are important as they show Disney’s improved trajectory.
Disney has relied on traditional gender roles in older movies, reflecting their origins in a cultural context based in the mid-20th century, resonating with the basic fairy tale narrative emphasizing the passive girl and her courageous male savior. However, as societal norms have evolved, so have Disney’s stories. Most recent movies, like Raya and the Last dragon, reject the damsel in distress narrative, showing the reimagination of traditional story telling. In addition, a challenge Disney has been facing recurrently is finding the right balance between feminine traits and empowerment. Mulan achieves success by acquiring traditional masculine traits. In contrast, Moana and Elsa show that strength, compassion, and vulnerability can coexist. This recognizable change showcases that empowerment does not need an abandon of femininity. Besides this, while Disney’s story telling progresses with the changing societal norms,  the commercial motivations behind these shifts are important to consider. Disney ensures it’s constant global relevance by appealing to more diverse audiences. The article could add depth to the analysis by exploring whether the significant changes are genuine social responsibility or calculated responses to demands.
This excerpt could use some deeper exploration. Firstly, as this article compares the princesses across the different eras, examining the impact of societal changes on gender representation, they could highlight the company’s evolution, while also acknowledging the areas where the progress might remain incomplete. As well as acknowledged evolution, another important intersectional lens that would enrich the excerpt, would be the portrayal of the intersection of ethnicity race and cultural diversity. This perspective has always proven to be crucial in understanding the wider suggestions in a society that is multicultural. Furthermore, good support for the critique would be the exploration of how audiences perceive and respond to Disney’s gender narratives. For example, analyzing some character’s popularity among young viewers, such as Elsa and Moana, would well illustrate how these different portrayals resonate with modern audiences. Lastly, situating the representation of gender within the broader context of animated movies would offer a more refined analysis. Comparing the different approaches from Disney to other studios such as Pixar and Dream Works could show who’s leading and who’s fooling the industry in representation.
In conclusion, the analysis of the gender representation of Disney in princess movies does raise significant questions about stereotypes, the influence of society as well as the need for more progressive narratives. While this article contrasts well the traditional and modern portrayals, it could explore the evolution of Disney’s strategical storytelling. The research could deliver a better understanding of the role Disney holds in shaping cultural narratives about gender by analyzing more in-depth intersectionality, context, and the impact on the audience. In the end,  Disney princess movies consider and showcase both the challenges and opportunities of evolving gender representation in a changing world.

Hello Tumblr
Long time, no see...
Haven't been here for more than a year because I was more into local-to-my-country fandoms, but I feel it's time to return.
My last post was about the IT series, but I'm not interested anymore since Bill Skarsgard is not going to be there...
I got more into Encanto in the last couple weeks. I just hope I'm not (too) late to the party. I know the movie is already almost 2 years old, but as I said, I was into other things.
Anyway, here's something interesting I found in Reddit, and I'll also add my own analyses and observations in future posts:
So every person in the family had a “superpower” that was really a coping mechanism for being in a dysfunctional family
Bruno- He tells the truth about what is happening and is the black sheep and scapegoat of the family because he doesn’t tell people what they want to hear
Isabela- The Golden child, held to impossible standards and fawned upon when she does what Abuela wants of her
Luisa- The sibling who feels inferior to the golden child and thinks it’s her sole responsibility to hold the family together at the expense of her own wants because caring for others defines her
Pepa- stormy mental illness due to her estranged brother and narcissistic mother- also blaming Bruno for her wedding storm which is a metaphor for her losing her temper and needing a scapegoat on a stressful day
Antonio- Young child uses his imagination to talk to animals as a form of escapism from a dysfunctional multi generational household
Camilo- “born to entertain” and mimics those around him to please them and to keep them happy with him, literally a social chameleon
Dolores- Hypervigilent because of the family dysfunction- listens to everyone around her without trying and always on edge
Julieta- Coping through adherence to strict gender norms, uses food to convey love and to keep people happy, cooking is her only skill and she’s defined by it
Mirabel- Trying to break generational trauma, blames herself at first just for asking questions and wanting people to be genuine with her
Abuela- narcissist who has deep trauma and projects a need for control to her family because she never wants to feel out of control again

Reblogging again because I re-read this on a whim, and I wanted to add on about the Starscream thing.
I think I finally figured out why Starscream is my favourite character, not just because I think he's cute/hot/funny/whatever.
Because he always gets scrutinised, criticised, spat on, blamed for everything, used as a punching bag, etc.
And I've had to deal with that a lot.
I've basically dealt with criticism my entire life, from my own family. Decisions, interests, attitudes, behaviour, whatever....I swear it ALWAYS got ripped apart or nitpicked. And they wonder why I never want to share anything with them or why I'm less open about interests now.
My sister and I didn't tell our parents about our Cars interest for MONTHS because, long ago, we recalled our dad suggesting picking up the movie for us and our mum shot down the idea. So we were convinced she didn't like it, and when we got into it, we tried to keep it secret, hide all the toys, etc. But eventually it kinda came out. However, that one had a happy ending as the parents didn't mind and even enjoyed the movies when we showed them.
I once worked up to the courage to tell my dad that I saw the first episode of Knight Rider and really liked it. He made some derogatory statement about it, and that's when I decided "this is the last time I tell these people about my interests". I've kept everything else, especially Transformers, under wraps ever since.
I also had to deal with getting blamed for EVERYTHING under the sun. Everything was my fault. They were never wrong. Was I innocent all the time? Hell no. Like Starscream I was definitely a conniving brat, I can admit that much. I kinda have a penchant for petty revenge. And like IchBinMeltdown I have Asperger's/ADHD and I fear I may even have traits of narcissism in me.
So yes, I was in the wrong a lot. But when I got older, I realised my parents were in the wrong too. Realised it big time during one Christmas when they would not stop talking and ranting about politics and when I begged them to stop because it was ruining the holiday, they would respond with "we're not being critical. You're overreacting. You're bringing this on yourself. Why are you so upset?!" I basically got accused of ruining the holiday.
So when I see Starscream getting blamed for the Decepticons' failure, I can relate to my beloved dumpster fire son. Maybe this is why I clung to him when I got into TF. We've both been beaten down, picked on, blamed, etc. Except Starscream has no one to turn to and lean on (except for Arcane but she's an OC).
Generational trauma is something that's only been recently researched and understood, and films like Turning Red and Encanto get praised for their takes on it, but there's actually older media that did excellent takes on it too. Like this clip from Everybody Loves Raymond:

And I think G1 Transformers ended up doing that too. I firmly believe Starscream acts the way he does because of how Megatron treats him. Sure, he was always cocky and full of himself and not above throwing others under the bus to get what he wants, when he wants. But I think a good chunk of the reason we saw him treat the Combaticons the way he did was because that's all he knew, he was internalising Megatron's abuse and continuing the cycle instead of breaking it (it could also be because he too was instilled to believe kindness and mercy were weak). This is something I really want to explore, especially with Arcane since she too would be on that receiving end despite her actually SUPPORTING Starscream (didn't mean to ramble about my OC, sorry!).
ANYWAY, just wanted to get that out of my head while I could. It's insane how much I've been able to draw from Transformers, let alone G1. I could spend all day just analysing this stuff.
I have no words other than I have officially gone from feeling like D16 to feeling like Megatron.
I do not wish to elaborate any further.
