Satan's Cheerleaders - Spin Magazine (Feb 1996)
"You'll never understand me because you sit in the audience at a horror movie. I'm up on the screen." - Ihsahn
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
just some other quotes i liked :3
They don't know him. They can't understand that my husband [Samoth] is an honorable Viking man.
Faust bursts through the visiting-room door with the intensity of a fly finally let out of its glass cage...
Even with his broad shoulders, Faust has the same childlike grasp on reality I noticed in Hellhammer, but he's less good-natured...
"In American Psycho he gets it down perfectly," Faust tells me enthusiastically. "One minute you're looking at a man's clothes and the next you're sticking a knife in his eye."
In his [Ihsahn] tailored black pants and silk shirt, his dyed hair held in a braid down his back, he's an Armani vampire.
When I ask why [Ihsahn] didn't go with Samoth and Grishnackh the night they burned down Skjold Church, he explains that he wasn't home when they looked for him but that he definitely would have joined in.
Really?? Bc in another interview he said he wasn't interested in it and wouldn't want to face the consequences iirc
Ihsahn believes the vampire to be the perfect symbol of the Satanic. "Dracula feeds on others but feels passion for just a few," he explains.

Euronymous' And Dead's Interview Found In 50Megs
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
INTERVIEWER: For a long time the band didn't have a reh. place, what did you do during this time?
DEAD: "Good question ........After that we couldn't be at the old VOMIT's place anymore we had for a very short time our own place (2 weeks or so) before they cut of the electricity and later on tore down the whole place......By then Hellhammer had joined the band. What we did then was to find somewhere to live (well, some things go before rehersal place). We could stay for some month mostly at each place and those have been at friends, half broken down houses, forests and camping places etc.......... But luckily it's much better now, even if we can't stay here so much longer. For really long time we were out of any place to rehearse at all and what we could do then for the band was not much else than replying on the mail."
⛧⛧⛧
INTERVIEWER: Now much material have you written which you have thrown away? How many songs do you have now?
EURONYMOUS: "Probably 50-75% of all the riffs I make will be thrown away sooner or later, because after a while it is not good enough. I don't want to make any mainstream music, so each riff must be something special, and then it takes very long time to make the music. We have five new songs now ("Funeral Fog", "Buried By Time and Dust", "The Freezing Moon", "Pagan Fears" and one new without any lyrics), but if you're thinking about the total number of songs which we have and will play live, it's nine songs + this new one which we will not play live before some time."

The following is part of a 2021 interview to Attila by the YT channel Over Music. Read below for the highlights, but definitely go and check the original video.
interviewer: "How was your relationship with Euronymous? Did you have a friendship relationship with him or he contacted you to work on DMDS and nothing more?"
Attila: "First he contacted me about that and he invited me to sing in Mayhem. Also he wanted to release Tormentor, my first band; we had Anno Domini, our debut album which was never released. So he really wanted to do that as well. I don't know how the fuck he phoned me, you know, he had this great network and we had some common friends […] Anyway, he wrote me a very fucking nice letter, kinda like talking like a fine gentleman, you know I really appreciated… in a little bit noble, sofisticated style… and we talked by phone and shared some music, I sent him some photos, stuff like that. He sent me the Deathcrush record and Darkthrone and Burzum records and shit. I think we had been in contact for maybe one or two years. I think he contacted me as I understood not long after Dead commited suicide. Of course he told me about it, and I think I was one of the favourite vocalists of both him and Dead. That's why he invited me in the first place to join the band. I was just thinking about Euronymous, actually, Øystein, who I consider as my brother, I can't say anything bad about him, actually. He was always super cool, very nice, friendly and like a gentleman to me, totally cool… you know, I was thinking about just yesterday because I have this beautiful new speaker system […] I was just listening to music and I put on some Tangerine Dream record to try to relax […] and it came to my mind that Øystein had this huge fucking Tangerine Dream collection […] He had all this collection and even he had all the side projects of the members of the band. So beside he had a very nice metal collection, he had this huge Tangerine Dream collection, I was like man, that's great that you like electronic music. […] So I'm just saying that music for me is everything but also, like you I guess, you're not listening only to extreme metal but that's the driving force that keeps us together […]."

So this is what he sounds like! I've heard a lot about his voice but not his actual voice.
Euronymous Being Questioned by Journalists in 1993
I apologize for the quality being so low, i couldn't find a better version. This was after Euronymous closed down Helvete and Varg ended up in jail for telling exaggerated stories to a journalist about the Black Metal scene.
Translation:
Øystein: We know absolutely nothing. Interviewer: We haven't even asked what this is about yet. Øystein: They gave a call to (inaudible).

Short Faust interview in Kerrang! magazine
Tumblr media
- Kerrang! issue no. 458 August 28, 1993
Faust, drummer of another of Norway's infamous Black Metal bands, Emperor, reveals that the Inner Circle's activities are being probed by police following the murder and arson attacks. Inner Circle members are allegedly being questioned concerning a number of unsolved crimes.
Says Faust: "It's annoying, to say the least!"
Euronymous' murder is also currently unsolved, although Faust is unconvinced by rumours suggesting that Euronymous' killer or killers were from a Swedish Satanic cult.
"No one in Sweden would dare commit such an act," Faust sneers. "Also, Euronymous' address was a secret, known to few people."
Faust adds, in tribute to Euronymous: "A great legend and a great friend has died. His memory will live on with us."

Breaking News: The Swedish celebrity "Dark Lilith" the solo artist and also necomer to the black metal scene was seen performing a satanic ritual in the cemetery last night, apparently trying to summon demons, two figures were seen walking into the night-" the TV was switched off and a sigh came over her lips, her eyes rimmed with dark make-up showing annoyance and yet a little amusement.
She held a bottle of beer in one hand and her guitar in the other. The dark material shone slightly in the dim light in the anteroom. Outside, she could already hear the audience waiting for her.
Thanks Satan that I'm here but the report is unnecessary shit she thought and took the last sip of her beer. She liked it when people reported on her and yet she could do without false statements.
Two unnamed people. She knew for sure that it was neither a ritual of shame nor two unknowns. Her lovers and sex on the farm were more likely to be asked. But every interviewer had either fled or refused.
It was true that she was female, a witch, Lilith, and perhaps went a little too far. But she was a part of the scene, of the time, and in that time from her beginnings to her rise she had gotten to know them.
Her two dead ones, her loved ones, it was romantic. Euronymous always gave her song lyrics and gestures in the form of kisses and instruments. Dead, on the other hand, often drew her things and wanted her to kill him.
Things that flattered her, but she also knew that if it came out that she was the biggest solo maker in such a scene, dating the two men from Mayhem would be hell. Everywhere. ,,The Christians and fans are coming for me," she muttered, plucking at the side of her guitar before throwing the bottle into a garbage can, hearing the rumble and clink before she stood up and knew it was time.
The stage was her home. Her fans were her worshippers and her voice was the magic. Looking into the crowd, she saw the many dark shapes, the make-up of the women looking up at her and the blood on them. It was perfect.
And when her eyes fell on the group, she saw the black-haired and the blonde. She winked at them and saw that they knew she meant them. Felt the beating of her heart as she started to play and the guitar joined in. It was another concert of life, it was everything.
The walls shook, the crowd went wild, her voice screamed into the microphone and everything was fucking perfect. It was a bloody night, there was alcohol involved, some drugs and Satan himself.
It was all perfect and as the dark curtain closed and she retreated she heard the voices of the group. ,,You played perfectly!" she heard Euronymous shout as he pulled her close and gave her a deep kiss.
,,Really good...almost deadly," quipped Dead and she saw the hint of a smile on his lips, a gesture she knew she didn't see often and yet she was grateful that they were happy. But the rest of the black circle also congratulated them on another successful concert.
They all grabbed a beer and a cigarette before retiring to the anteroom to have a little celebration of their own and make it all the better. Euronymous always had his hand by her side always had his lips on her body wanting more of her whether in front of the others or not.
Dead watched her, every now and then he would say and show her something and gently stroke her hand, enjoying feeling the bones underneath. They both loved her in a way that was indescribable. And at the latest when the cold night air hit her body, she was snapped back to reality.
,,The afterparty is long over, but here... it's cozy, isn't it?" she heard the voice of the band founder as he stood next to her, entangling her in a kiss and only making her mind even more clouded by alcohol and drugs.
,,Supper cozy-fuck," she mumbled and leaned into him wanting more of him wanting more of them both no matter if it was in a side alley next to the hall. It didn't matter, it was the only thing she needed to get down. ,,Warm...soft," she heard Dead murmur as he knelt in front of her and kissed his way up her legs.
His cold lips almost as cold as a corpse, his pale pale in the moonlight as he ran his knife over her skin while Euronymous used his hand to start massaging her breasts. She wore no tights, just the black top and the short leather skirt.
The warmth she gave him was the only thing the blonde needed to live. He needed her to stay here and Euronymous needed her to keep going. And she needed them both to feel fucking good.
It was a moment between them that would lead to a promising night. If all three of them didn't pause when they heard the clicking sound. ,,What the fuck?" she mumbled, coming back to the now lost to the two of them and looking into the surprised face of a reporter.
,,You're dead!" Euronymous hissed and took out his taser, which flashed through the dead end. ,,Death," Dead muttered, gripping the knife in his hand tighter before the two ran towards the reporter. As he ran screaming for his life, their laughter could be heard. It was satanically good, it was hellishly ampsant for her.
It only got better when she saw her picture on the title page the next day. ,,Fuck look at you so pretty," Euronymous said and Dead nodded in agreement. ,,An album cover...for Lilith," the blonde said and began to draw inspiration.
The picture showed her leaning against the brick wall, her eyes closed with lust, Euronymous at her side, his hand under her top as he kissed her neck.
Dead kneeling in front of her with the knife running over her skin as he kissed his way up her legs to her center. ,,A fucking good picture...I think we should have done this sooner," she muttered, picking up the newspaper before cutting out the article and nailing it to the wall with a knife. It was a fucking satanic masterpiece.

This would’ve been around spring ’91, when Slayer Mag #8 came out – the one with that legendary Euronymous and Dead interview where they lay down the law in terms of, ‘Black metal is like this, death metal is like that. And it’s a lifestyle.’ All this really resonated with me. I thought, ‘Fuck, I love what they’re saying here. It feels right.’ That interview changed my whole approach to music, my interests, and the direction I wanted to take. […] I never got around to playing him (Euronymous) my music. I was a little concerned that he might not be into it, so I kept dragging my feet a lot in terms of letting him know about the Mortiis project. I was literally terrified that if Euronymous told me it sucked, I wouldn’t want to make more music. I can handle a lot of criticism but, at the time – as an eighteen-year-old – I’d have been devastated if Euronymous said, ‘Dude, it’s shit.’ Because he was very honest and would’ve told me in no uncertain terms if he didn’t like my music. So, I think that held me back. I do recall entertaining this little daydream that it would’ve been fucking cool to release something on his label, but, at the same time, I knew it would’ve taken forever. Euronymous was always dealing with various financial complications. […] I’d just turned eighteen and thought I was going to prison; I had a police detective with a big beard staring me straight in the eye… and I’m like, ‘I am so fucked.’ I wasn’t raised in the fucking Bronx, you know. I didn’t grow up in The Godfather, nor have I ever been forced to survive on the street. I’m a middle-class kid! My parents paid for my first album, for fucks sake. So no, I’m not tough like that. They fucked me and then I had to fucking deal with it. You know, for years. People felt I’d snitched on Faust, but that wasn’t the case at all. It’s true that I did talk to the police because they tricked me. The motherfuckers tricked me. When it came to Varg, I had zero loyalty. I told them everything I knew, because he killed Euronymous. I even testified in court against that dickhead. Still to this day, I’m fucking glad I did that.

why do you say that pelle was interested in fashion?
Sorry, I'm tired af, college is killing me. For that reason I'm not putting proofs here, more than the obvious ones, and it's just more me rambling before to get a concrete idea, so, sorry.
So, Was Pelle interested in fashion?
Short answer: Yes.
Let me cook.
It was obvious that Pelle was attracted to every kind of art, music, poetry (such poetry lyrics), painting, drawing, everything, but the fashion. I'm not talking about fashion in a traditional way, not even in a Vivianne Westwood way, not, he was an extreme fashion rat.
We can say that his major inspirations were Kiss, king diamond, the shock rock in general, and the most important influence Sarcófago, because he shared the characteristic that he was actually interested in creating his own clothing, but boots the outfit quality as an essential part of the band's identity, not creating a difference between the character and the real person, we can know Pelle thorough letter, because every single mayhem's interview was Dead, and the metaphors was the clothing. The character of Dead was well planned since morbid, and Pelle was extremely detailed with every aspect of his character. But he was not only interested in finding the perfect aesthetic for his own character.
I think the strongest proof of him being an extreme fashion freak is his influence in Euronymous character:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We can see a notorious difference between the first attempts of corpse paint and the final Euronymous, even Øystein's outfits changed before Pelle and post Pelle; but let's get focus in Euronymous and how he passed to show his ass to being a character even more scary than Dead
Tumblr media
Much more angular and sharp strokes to mitigate the most delicate features of Øystein’s face, a simplification of the elements keeping the angry lips more subtle, and remove that cross from the forehead that looks like a Wednesday ash mark. Although we could say that it was Øystein’s idea, he himself in his statements, he clarified that the whole idea of aesthetics, costumes, and the creative part were more ideas from Pelle than he perfected in some way.
I think Pelle’s strong point was this whole creative world, how he could communicate his inner world to the outside through visual elements, how he made them important during presentations, I can’t say for sure that it was his favorite part of everything involving having a band or something like that, which I think is obvious that he was really passionate about this, and that he was interested in others joining his vision. However, we can affirm that Pelle is the creator of the aesthetics of black metal as we know it today, because the Sarcófago's "corpse paint" was transferred to war metal, simulating more military painting, but the uniqueness of white faces recalling corpse or demons are property of Pelle, undoubtedly marking the international black metal scene, and if he had more time and resources (remembering that he also had his zombie makeup with oozing mucus), I do not have doubt that he could have done more and explore this taste which seems to be a little ignored, although we all know the fact that he created his own clothes and the rituals he had with those.

Hii, a few posts back you said you have your opinions on Faust and Euronymous separately could you make a post on that?
Love your analysis :)
Øystein has an interesting personality. I talked a bit about him in comparison with Varg at some point because they do share a few characteristic features.
I would describe Øystein as ambitious, talented, creative, hard-working and a leader. I don't think he worked very hard (as Varg, for example) to gain admiration from the people around him, I think that his ingenious ideas and musical innovation attracted people naturally.
He knew how to make himself be respected by his peers because he was open-minded, understanding, and had an optimistic attitude (as many described him) towards life.
It's pretty clear that he wasn't as mentally unstable as others in the scene, but it doesn't mean that he had no issues. I believe he had a bit of an inclination to be people-pleasing while also trying to remain firm on his views and beliefs.
He was prideful, confident (especially about his music), enjoyed the position of power and influence in which he was but didn't abuse that at all. He was arrogant at times and full of himself, but there is a fine line between the character that he was playing (Euronymous) and the real person he was inside.
I see him as having a few narcissistic features but not enough to consider him in the NPD spectrum. He was also quite understanding (especially when Emperor got signed by Candlelight Records) and you don't really see full-blown narcissists being reasonable and understanding.
Unfortunately, because of his strong personality and leadership attributes (dominant, assertive), he managed to attract a very toxic person in his life that lately became his murderer.
The fact that he had a healthy relationship with his parents tells a lot about him. He seemed to have much more authentic confidence than Varg ever had as well as discipline. He seemed much more thoughtful about consequences than Varg, and this became apparent when he took a step back from a situation that would have brought him extra fame, but also MASSIVE implications (negative attention). He also closed his shop at the suggestion of his parents.
These attributes generally come from a 'good enough' household.
Later on, it's quite evident that he struggled with depression because of Pelle's death. There are some indications of 'self harm' and excessive drinking behaviour. But it is also possible that he had episodic depression in the time that Pelle was alive because we all know that depression and anxiety are socially transmitted mental illnesses (or at least we should know).
I personally find his implication in church-burnings a theatrical movement rather than a truly antisocial behaviour. So this makes me think that naturally, he had fewer violent impulses than he wanted to display to the public. In addition to this, he even tried to dissociate himself from the image that Varg's juvenile criminality was put on him.
He had an inflated sense of ego that I tent to see it as theatrical rather than real, but this is how they were 'playing the game' back then.
His coping mechanisms after Pelle's death were dubious, but it is what it is. There is no point in getting into details. People cope differently with trauma. Øystein tried to cope as best as he could.
This is a very rough summary of how I see him.
Now, when it comes to Faust, I know he was seeing Øystein as a mentor. He had a lot of respect for him, this is undeniable.
Now, not all people are able to commit murder, even if in self-defense. What Faust did was reacting on impulse. I don't know what was in his head when he did it, but he described in an interview as 'seeing himself out of his body as he was doing it' and this is due to adrenaline rush combined with the brain's inability to cope with what is happening on the spot. He dissociated at the scene and probably had a hard time believing what he did after that.
In the context in which Faust committed his crime, this is antisocial behaviour. Another detail that stuck out was how he described the incident. 'Stomping on his head' is nothing but cruelty and sadism, in my opinion.
I am not saying that he is in a 'certain way', but these are my thoughts on him for what he's done.
Remember that anyone who killed a person or an animal can do it again. This is a psychological fact. Maybe they will never repeat their mistake, maybe they will seek redemption, but once you've done something like this, you are very, very likely to repeat the behaviour.
I hope you find this useful, anon

Another clarification. I don't think Euronymous killed Dead. And I think all conspiracies about that matter are dumb af.
Feel free to look at the pictures, read the letters, the interviews. Do it for fun, you're not uncovering anything new

Lords of Chaos by Michael Moynihan and Didrik Søderlind - 3/5
First, I watched the film adaptation, which zeroes in on a crimewave connected to the early 90s black metal scene in suburban Norway, a battle of personalities between Euronymous of the band Mayhem, and his eventual killer Varg AKA Burzum AKA Lord Grishnakh. It’s comical in a Scorsesean way, think Wolf of Wall Street if it was about teenagers who think they’re more important than they are, think Amadeus if it was about musicians who aren’t very good. So I enjoyed the movie so much that I decided to read Moynihan and Søderlind’s book-length work of investigative journalism, because I found the whole microcosm fascinating in a voyeuristic way.
The book Lords of Chaos covers the Euronymous/Varg saga, but does not dwell on it. It’s a comprehensive portrait of a time and place. And because of that, it’s actually somewhat boring. Moynihan and Søderlind did not do much curation (like one of my favorite journalistic books, Blood, Sweat & Chrome did) and instead opted to print full-length interviews with musicians from the scene. I’m not moralistically opposed to “platforming” people like Varg (Nazi, racist, and murderer, though if he murdered another racist, I guess he can’t be that bad, right?) because they come across as so stupid that I can’t imagine anyone from outside their immediate sphere taking them seriously. But I found the meat of this book to be very boring, because the authors take these guys seriously enough to print the entire interviews, seemingly unedited.
Some have criticized Moynihan as being right-wing and sympathetic to the Neo-Nazis portrayed in this book. I can’t really see that — as aforementioned, I don’t think there’s an editorial duty to criticize and dissect someone who willingly makes themselves look stupid. The one thing that Moynihan and Søderlind actually excel at, though it is a comparatively meager part of this book, is cultural criticism. Many cogent analyses of Satanism, Neo-Paganism, and the Norwegian far-right movements are given, most of which boil down to bored teenagers in a sheltered middle-class suburb craving some sort of extreme reaction. Early on, Moynihan and Søderlind make an argument I have never seen anywhere else. They (rightfully) trace the lineage from blues to rock to black metal, but make the point that moralism has followed this musical genealogy since the start — the first “Satanic Panic” being at Congo Square, where slaves from Louisiana first invented jazz. I love this being a blow to the fascist worldview of someone like Varg.

EMPEROR in Transylvanian Damnation issue no. 1, 1992
Tumblr media Tumblr media
^ Emperor era Mortiis c. Nov 1992 bc I can't find the zine cover
Mortiis interviewed (transcription below)
[ancient-qveen: I linked this interview before but I wanted to make a dedicated post about it because its not that easy to find. Credit to AEon]
Tumblr media
Emperor formed about Sept of ’91, with the following line-up: Steingrimm – guitar and vocal, Samot /Lord of Silence/ - guitar/ex-drums and Emperor Mortiis – bass /on the photo L to R/. They recorded the debut demo in May, on a 4-tracker. Euronymous offered them a record-deal, and a few months later Samot left the band to join BURZUM. Let’s see...
Well, you formed about one year ago and released a demo... How do you see this time, are you staisfied with your work?
Mortiis: Yeah! We are satisfied with our work. As for what we created during Oct-May, we are not really sounding so much like that any longer. As well as his lyrics are a lot more in depth of total Evil! Our music is still /of course/ blacker than bottomless lakes, and even more errie, depressive and deep! The lyrics for the demo was about Vampirism, Witchism, Black Magic etc. this is still our subject, but it’s all in one dark world. All the lyrics belong to teach other, and his lyrics always will. They are of a thousand years to come. Forgotten by time itself!
Did or do you play in other bands besides EMPEROR? And what about Samot, you know, strange to hear that he joins BURZUM, because as Grev said, his band is and will be only a one-piece band...
Mortiis: Yes, he did play in a couple band before. But they are nothing to talk about! Fuck them! Although for one of them the lyrics for “Forgotten Centuries” and “Moon over Karashehr” were written. But for luck never used. All those people, the lowlife human life form, deserve torture! He believes that the Samot/BURZUM thing is because the Count wanted BURZUM to be a live band! Something like that... Anyway, people should be aware that Samot is still in EMPEROR, and hopefully forever will be...
Let’s see your demo... How can you describe your music, and which bands helped to develop it?
Mortiis: Witching Black Metal! No bands helped us create that cursed demo. We are not saying that we are totally original at that time but now we are! Yeah!, but no bands really influenced us so much. Better ask Samot and Steingrimm this question instead! Probably that band that “develop” us must be VENOM, for creating Black Metal itself!
After the BURZUM, MAYHEM, and ABRUPTUM LPs Euro offered a record-deal to you, too. Which trax will be on it, and what do you think, when will you be able to release it?
Mortiis: The LP will come in the past darkness. We don’t know yet. We’ve got 4 songs mainly worked out, plus he and Ygg are working on two other one. There will be 10 trax all in all! Besides of two guitars, bass and drums /session, but we haven’t found any yet!. There will be constant synth, piano parts, female vocals, cello etc... The studio will be filled up with several instruments... It will be massive for sure! Some titled: The Stargate”, “Emperor of a Dimension Unknown”, “Chronicles”..., “Reflections of Horizons Dark”, “In the October Frost”, “Gathering Ancient Wisdom /and a New Soul/”, and more!
Something has happened in North-Europe, especially in Norway. Just see, The BURZUM LPs, the second DARKTHRONE LP, and bands with great demos, like ENSLAVED or EMPEROR. Can we speak about a new Black Metal generation or reborn? How do you see the true scene in 2-3 years?
Mortiis: The true and evil Black Metal generation is born! In 2-3 years there will be alot less goodness around! Hopefully he will get to move out of his parents’ house and do some pain to humanity!
Let’s see your life... Do the members live together? Do you have time besides the band for your hobbies /if you have/? And what about the financial side, are you working or going to school?
Mortiis: He is not of this earth. It took him almost 17 years to realize the essence of his soul is not of earth! no, the members do not live together. Samot is at some place in cold Norway. Steingrim is living with his father and other times his mother. Mortiis /Him/ lives with his earthly “guardians” right now. We have no hobby. Our lifes are dark. Our band rehearses seldom these days. But we seem to be getting things together taking the situation into consideration! Both him and Ygg is still doing the school. So financially our lifes are not such interesting...
You inspired by the events of Adolf Hitler. What do you think, is Nazism still alive and will it rise again?
Mortiis: As for today’s Nazism, he doesn’t care about it. If some extreme violence is caused by them, it will be shown on TV. And he will get to see it eventually anyway... Those nazi leaders of today are probably intelligent and all that, but none of them could ever stand up to the genive status that Hitler had. He read a couple of books about Hitler about 2 years ago. And few people know that Hitler drove his sister’s daughter to suicide. And if it hadn’t been for some people who guarded him day and night, he would have killed himself, too. And then there wouldn’t have been any World War II. If the new Nazism rises or not it’s unimportant to him. At least, they are causing lots of pain and fear...
