Orientalism is the imitation or depiction of aspects of the Eastern world (or "Orient") by writers, designers, and artists from the Western world.
In art history, the term Orientalism refers to the works of mostly 19th-century Western artists who specialized in Oriental subjects, produced from their travels in Western Asia, during the 19th century.
Chinoiserie media included imitations of lacquer and painted tin (tôle) ware that imitated japanning, early painted wallpapers in sheets, and ceramic figurines and table ornaments. The popularity of chinoiserie peaked around the middle of the 18th century when it was associated with the Rococo style.
Pleasure pavilions in "Chinese taste" appeared in the formal parterres of late Baroque and Rococo German palaces. The Yellow Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace is rife with chinoiserie designs. King George IV was a keen patron of chinoiserie, and had many rooms created in this style.
As a style, chinoiserie is related to the Rococo style. Both styles are characterized by exuberant decoration, asymmetry, a focus on materials, and stylized nature and subject matter that focuses on leisure and pleasure.
While Europeans frequently held inaccurate ideas about East Asia, this did not necessarily preclude their fascination and respect. It's suggested that the majority of Orientalism was derived out of a genuine fascination and admiration of Eastern cultures, not prejudice or malice. [x]

Wedded
Artist: Frederic Leighton, 1st Baronet (English, 1830-1896)
Date: 1882
Medium: Oil on canvas mounted on hardboard
Collection: Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia
Description
A young couple embrace after their marriage. The setting is the Greek amphitheater of Taormina in Sicily. The woman is apparently based on studies Leighton made in Damascus of a Greek girl whose beauty captivated him. The picture was one of the artist's most popular works and the poet Robert Browning on inspecting it is said to have remarked: 'I find a poetry in that man's work that I can find in no other'.

Allegory of the Arts
Artist: Pompeo Girolamo Batoni (Italian, 1708–1787)
Date: 1740
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Städel Museum, Frankfurt, Germany
Description
The painting shows five women who embody the arts. Painting is sitting by the easel at the centre of the composition. She has turned towards Poetry, who is standing behind and who provides her with inspiration. Sculpture is sitting at front left and gazes admiringly up at Painting. Architecture and Music have retreated into the background. The Roman artist Batoni also illustrates the supremacy of Painting within the arts with his refined, almost classical-looking style, which disguises every brushstroke.

The Love Song
Artist: Sir Edward Burne-Jones (English, 1833–1898)
Date: 1868–1877
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, NY, United States
Description
Burne-Jones exhibited this painting with the lyrics "Alas, I know a love song, / Sad or happy, each in turn." Cupid, with arrows slung over his shoulder, pumps the organ at right. Burne-Jones associated the scene with his affair with artist and model Maria Zambaco (1843–1914). More broadly, the picture reflects the embrace of music as a model for art that appeals directly to the emotions. As one critic said of this painting, "There is no story: nothing to guess at, but everything to feel." It was first owned by businessman William Graham, who commissioned the Small Briar Rose series displayed nearby. Also on view are works by, and a bust of, Puvis de Chavannes, who championed Burne-Jones’s art in France. Their shared devotion to an idealized and dreamlike past earned Puvis the moniker "the French Burne-Jones."

Phocion, His Wife and a Rich Lady of Ionia
Artist: Franz Caucig (Slovenian, 1755-1828)
Date: Before 1801
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: National Gallery of Slovenia, Ljubljana, Slovenia
Description
Phocion (c. 402 – c. 318 BC), nicknamed The Good, was an Athenian statesman and strategos, and the subject of one of Plutarch's Parallel Lives.
Phocion was a successful politician of Athens. He believed that extreme frugality was the condition for virtue and lived in accord with this; consequently, he was popularly known as "The Good." Further, people thought that Phocion was the most honest member of the Athenian Assembly. However, within this chamber, Phocion's tendency to strong opposition relegated him to a solitary stand against the entire political class. Nonetheless, by both his individual prestige and his military expertise, which was acquired by the side of Chabrias, Phocion was elected strategos numerous times, with a record 45 terms in office. Thus, during most of his 84 years of life, Phocion occupied the most important Athenian offices.

Still trying to convince my brain the the Wayne Manor floor plan isn't too scary. Realized that I'm dealing with choice paralysis, so I'm trying to figure out a roof line to force the rooms inside of.
Information about gothic revival roofs isn't easy to find. Especially stuff that gets into dimensions and pitches.
From what I can tell, one wing MAY be slightly wide. Too broad a span for the type of roof I want. But I can't be sure! And I'm not sure what the alternatives are!
If I had a car, I'd head out to the university and spend an afternoon in the architecture library. THEY'D have what I need. But it's a 90 minute bus ride, and I need to be back to pick up my kids. So I'd have to plan the schedule carefully - not an ADHD strength.
Research is challenging!
#I did the roof on an elevation drawing and it was 2 1/2 stories tall#that's too tall#architecture#batman#wayne manor#the architectural style was popular in the states!#FOR HOUSES!#why isn't there INFO???#I don't WANT to learn about european universities thank you#they are very interesting but not what I asked about!
