Back to A lost Coat -The Selkie!Elijah AU

Elijah grows unaware of anything different about but those around him notice.

She hadn’t thought she could love him, this bastard, the replacement Mikael claimed for their little Elijah, but he’s a quiet baby, sometimes a little too easy, but something causes her to reach out for him, marvelling at his dark hair and brown eyes

She doesn’t let herself wonder how the child that shares no blood with her resemblance her sister so much.

Just as she doesn’t let her her mind wander to his true mother, or the chest locked in their home with a tiny seal coat inside.

Esther ignores the way the rain feels colder and sharper on her after Elijah calls her mama for the first time.

Finn knows his little brother is different. 

Not Elijah but Elijah all the same, not the baby Freya had wanted to meet, that one the first Elijah the witch had killed when she took Freya. 

He looks nothing like their parents, but Finn doesn’t think he looks like his mama even, the woman who Finn remembers as father’s thrall. 

One he had boastfully once explained to Finn that he had been gifted by his mentor, a sign of his strength to be trusted to hold her, Finm believed him, the woman was taller than father with dark hair and pale icy blue eyes.  

Elijah’s tiny even when he grows, his hair is dark but not as dark as Finn remembers the woman’s and his eyes aren’t the woman’s or father’s blue. 

He has Finn’s mama eyes. 

Finn decides that’s a reason to accept him.

Next to Freya screaming as the witch stole her, and mama’s screams when she started bleeding not a moon later, Elijah’s mama haunts him. 

The cold angry look she had sent his parents after they took his new-born brother from her, right up until she vanished backwards over the side of the boat into the water taking the fur father had exchanged the baby for. 

Finn remembers the second half of their journey to the new world, mostly from the weight on his lap and in his arms and carefully wiping the blood and slime from the baby’s exposed face and the fur he was wrapped in. 

Pretty white and soft, Finn hadn’t questioned where it had come from, nor did he question that it seemed sometimes the baby felt his gentle stroking of the fur. 

Once the boat lands Mikael changes the fur for a blanket and Finn was annoyed that Elijah screams like his skin is being taken.

Years later he learns the truth and hates himself for it.

He was a quiet baby.

But sometimes he was a concerning child.

Esther keeps her second son’s nails short because otherwise far to often he scratches himself until he bleeds.

Finn grows used to needing to reach out himself to stop him, holding his little brother’s hands away from himself and ignoring him as he whined pulling useless against Finn’s strength.

“It feels wrong.” was the rare explanation even if Elijah could never explain it beyond that.

The worst of Elijah’s strangeness vanished shortly after Klaus was born as he turned all his attention into entertaining the baby and those that followed.

Finn’s fourteen when all the strangeness around his brother makes sense.

Finn looks at the seal skin, half downy white and sliver grey with specks of dark colours, and thinks of the bloody white Elijah had been in when he was handed to him. 

His little brother wasn't human.

It was bigger because it was growing alongside him he realises, it was a part of him. 

He thinks of Elijah scratching his skin until his too sharp little nails drew blood. 

It feels Wrong.

Finn wonders what it would feel like living his life with half his skin locked away

Wrong seemed an apt enough word.

He thinks of the second woman who scared him, not the witch that stole his sister and killed his little brother before he was born but the other one, that gave him his other brother, but had towered over even father and looked at them all with cold angry eyes.

Who threw herself overboard with a seal coat just larger than the one Father kept in the chest, a chest that would have fit the larger coat better than Elijah’s small one.

He wondered if Elijah would gain the same cold angry eyes if he ever realised what they were keeping from him.
