Athletes Go for the Gold with NASA Spinoffs
NASA technology tends to find its way into the sporting world more often than you’d expect. Fitness is important to the space program because astronauts must undergo the extreme g-forces of getting into space and endure the long-term effects of weightlessness on the human body. The agency’s engineering expertise also means that items like shoes and swimsuits can be improved with NASA know-how.
As the 2024 Olympics are in full swing in Paris, here are some of the many NASA-derived technologies that have helped competitive athletes train for the games and made sure they’re properly equipped to win.

The LZR Racer reduces skin friction drag by covering more skin than traditional swimsuits. Multiple pieces of the water-resistant and extremely lightweight LZR Pulse fabric connect at ultrasonically welded seams and incorporate extremely low-profile zippers to keep viscous drag to a minimum.
Swimsuits That Don’t Drag
When the swimsuit manufacturer Speedo wanted its LZR Racer suit to have as little drag as possible, the company turned to the experts at Langley Research Center to test its materials and design. The end result was that the new suit reduced drag by 24 percent compared to the prior generation of Speedo racing suit and broke 13 world records in 2008. While the original LZR Racer is no longer used in competition due to the advantage it gave wearers, its legacy lives on in derivatives still produced to this day.

Trilion Quality Systems worked with NASA’s Glenn Research Center to adapt existing stereo photogrammetry software to work with high-speed cameras. Now the company sells the package widely, and it is used to analyze stress and strain in everything from knee implants to running shoes and more.
High-Speed Cameras for High-Speed Shoes
After space shuttle Columbia, investigators needed to see how materials reacted during recreation tests with high-speed cameras, which involved working with industry to create a system that could analyze footage filmed at 30,000 frames per second. Engineers at Adidas used this system to analyze the behavior of Olympic marathoners' feet as they hit the ground and adjusted the design of the company’s high-performance footwear based on these observations.

Martial artist Barry French holds an Impax Body Shield while former European middle-weight kickboxing champion Daryl Tyler delivers an explosive jump side kick; the force of the impact is registered precisely and shown on the display panel of the electronic box French is wearing on his belt.
One-Thousandth-of-an-Inch Punch
In the 1980s, Olympic martial artists needed a way to measure the impact of their strikes to improve training for competition. Impulse Technology reached out to Glenn Research Center to create the Impax sensor, an ultra-thin film sensor which creates a small amount of voltage when struck. The more force applied, the more voltage it generates, enabling a computerized display to show how powerful a punch or kick was.

The cylinders at the base of each side house the SpiraFlex FlexPacks that inventor Paul Francis honed under NASA contracts. They would go on to power the Bowflex Revolution and other commercial exercise equipment.
Weight Training Without the Weight
Astronauts spending long periods of time in space needed a way to maintain muscle mass without the effect of gravity, but lifting free weights doesn’t work when you’re practically weightless. An exercise machine that uses elastic resistance to provide the same benefits as weightlifting went to the space station in the year 2000. That resistance technology was commercialized into the Bowflex Revolution home exercise equipment shortly afterwards.

Wade’s place smelled like greasy pizza, put-out cigarettes, and old socks. The door wasn’t locked—in fact, it was slightly ajar, and you could clearly hear Wade and Al bickering about missing Crocs.
“I swear I put them right here!” she vehemently exclaimed, gesturing to a potted plant.
Wade rolled his eyes. “Right—because you always hang your Crocs on our leafy greens.”
Al shuffled somewhere into the back of the house, complaining loudly to herself.
You took that as your cue to silently step in, standing just behind Wade, noting with mild amusement that he was wearing a pair of white Crocs. The very ones Al was searching for, you presumed.
In the blink of an eye, Wade whirled about on the heel of his squeaky, rubbery footwear and brandished a knife. Its strangely warm blade slotted against your throat just as you defensively raised your hands.
“Watch it, Wade,” you warned, though you were not at all worried. His knife lowered and flipped back into the depths of his fluffy bathrobe when he realized who you were.
“Oh. It’s you,” he said. The discolored flesh of his face twitched with a grin. “Did Mr. Metal Dick send you? The bullwhip substitute to watch over the class?” He snickered at his own joke, recalling your mutant ability to harness energy into the form of ropes.
“Piotr is off on vacation with Kitty,” you replied, propping your hands up on your hips.
Wade tipped his head back and guffawed. “Do you think he stays that way under the sheets?”
With a grimace, you pinched the space between your brows and sighed loudly. “Jesus, Wade—I don’t fucking know. Why don’t you ask him next time you see him?”
“Good idea.” He shuffled off to shuck open a box of day-old pizza on the table. “You want?”
“No thanks.”
“You sure? It’s pepperoni. You know how expensive it is to get pepperoni nowadays, in this economy? I’m offering you gold flakes on bread, here.”
“Mhm, I’ll pass.” After a considerable silence, only filled with Wade’s loud munching, you tested the waters by saying, “Charles actually sent me.”
Wade gestured at a chair and nudged for you to take a seat. “McAvoy or Stewart?”
“What? Charles Xavier, who’s McAvoy and Stewart?” You sank down onto the creaky wooden chair, frowning at the baby powder rimming the backboard. It was probably Al’s. Wouldn’t be surprised if it was Wade, though.
Ignoring your question, Wade tilted his head and asked, “How’s Yukio? And her emo-face Megasonic Nuclear Bomb-Head girlfriend?”
You smiled slightly, remembering how they were pestering Logan, who’d been working on fixing a motorcycle back at the mansion when you left.
“They’re fine. Wolvie, too.”
“No way!” exclaimed Wade. “Logie’s there, too? Jesus—whole damn gang’s there.”
“Except you,” you pointedly said.
Wade paused mid-chew. “Oh. Oh-ho-ho, I know what you’re doing here. Charles wants me to join his rag-tag team of circus freaks.”
“Wade—”
“The answer is no.”
“Come on—”
“And he wants me to be around all those kids? In a school? Has he met me?”
“Believe me, I don’t know what he’s thinking, either,” you told him, scoffing. “You’re the last person I’d expect to be on the team but… I trust Charles. If he wants you in, there must be a reason why.”
Holding his hands out, Wade shook his head. “Listen, I’m flattered, really, but Deadpool works solo. Except for that one time I formed the X-Force. But that was a team of people I hand-picked! The X-Men just doesn’t sound up my alley, y’know?”
You blew out a breath and fixed him with a serious expression. “Some day you’re gonna have to pull your head out of your ass and realize that there are people out there who are willing to be your friends. Your family. Don’t throw it away, Wade.”
A muscle in his jaw ticked as he studied you.
“You’re really bad with rejection, aren’t you?” he finally asked, quirking up a brow—or, at least where his eyebrow used to be—and crossed his arms. The Crocs he’d stolen from Al squeaked as he stood up and gestured to the door. “I’m surprised you didn’t go running back to Charles the moment I said no. I’m beginning to think you have a crush on me, or something. Not that I blame you. My face may be fucked but my dick works better than ever. Just ask Al. She’s blind as a bat, but she hears everything in this damn house.”
Immediately, you grimaced. “Ugh. Don’t be crass.”
“What? I thought you were into broken men. Like to pick up their pieces, don’cha? You and Wolvie had that fling once, no? He told me all about it.”
In truth, Logan had told him little to nothing about his brief relationship with you, but Wade had ruthlessly pestered him anyway.
You stiffened at his words, glowering. “You’re exasperating.”
“And you’re looking awfully lovely today. That frown really accentuates your eyes. Makes you look about a decade older.” Wade leaned his weight onto the table, leering over you, patting your back twice. “I find it very attractive.”
With a flick of your hand, a crimson coil of your harnessed energy shot out and thwacked him in his side, and he hissed out a string of curses, backing away from you. You’d burned right through his fluffy white robe, to his simultaneous dismay and astonishment.
“Jesus!” Wade glanced incredulously from you to the slight, shallow gash that formed by his ribs, already starting to heal itself. “That’s actually—that was so fucking cool. Do it again!”
Clearing your throat, you pushed yourself away and stood up. “Final time I’m asking. Yes or no?”
Wade pretended to give it a long, hard think. “Mmh…” He wrinkled his nose. “No.”
“Fine,” you said, rolling your eyes up to the ceiling. “When Piotr comes back from vacation, he’s going to find you and he’s not gonna go as easy on you as I have.”
“Ooh, ouch. Hope he brings some lube with him.” Wade grinned wolfishly.
Completely fed up with him, you ripped out a wad of paper and a pen from your jacket’s pocket, scribbling down your phone number. You folded it in half before shoving it against his chest.
“I’m not giving up on you. I’m a competitive person, Wade. If Piotr was the one to convince you to join, I just wouldn’t be able to bear it.”
“Yeah, yeah, you’re literally obsessed with me, I get it,” he remarked, sparing you a lopsided beam. He made a show of pocketing your number on the side of his robe that wasn’t burnt. “You little minx, you.”
With a final flick of your hand, you lashed out another coil around his foot, and made your way to the door just as he fell back onto the couch with a muffled oomf!
Just as you left, you heard Wade cackling to himself through the door you left partially ajar, just as it was when you came in. You chalked it up to him finding it funny that you managed to trip him over with your powers, and strode away from the shoddy house with your lips twitching upwards.
Wade, however, was laughing because he’d successfully pulled off taping a kick me sign onto your back without you noticing. A low and childish blow, but would certainly make for some fun banter whenever he saw you again—which, he suspected, would be pretty soon.
Plus, Wade thought you were pretty cute when you were riled up.

Updated! I usually write everything in a single draft and only edit for errors but I really wasn't happy with how this one turned out. So I've ramped up the teasing and taunting~<3
The click of the spotlights echo into the darkness around you. Their igniting beams expose your superhero leotard, the shiny bright material robbed of its inspirational appearance as you float suspended face-down. A click of heels reveals a smirking face, not that you can see the face of your captor yet but you can positively hear the smirk in the stride of those feet. You test your bindings, pulling your arms and legs.
Your strength is enough to bend the material but not enough to break free. The clicking grows closer and the footwear comes into view. Black nail polish gleams on tiny tapered toes, held snugly by black straps with flat silver buckles. Your eyes rise to study this casual outfit, not exactly the expected wardrobe of someone who somehow subdued you. Blue jeans, snug but not too tight on sporty legs. A thick black belt with a big silver buckle, almost mocking in its shininess, big enough to cast a little shadow on their exposed belly. A tiny black tube top covers their chest, and the only expected piece of their outfit is the white lab coat.
You growl and snarl at them, your gutteral voice that has put even the most intimidating of foes on their toes. Your muscles clench and strain as you finally raise your head enough to confirm that smirk. They regard you with an infuriating contempt, their blondish shoulder length hair far too bouncy. Your fists clench as you struggle and fight to take that smile away. But they never falter, and without a word they lift a remote adorned with a series of buttons and dials. They step back, heels clicking and the buttons tapping.
From above you can hear chambers opening and motors spinning up. The servo sounds grow closer, and you can feel the sensation of something getting near your back. With another click, monitors flicker on all around behind your captor. Displays highlight your angry face and your backside. Your clenching handsome tush is shown right as the machine implements come into view.
The cursing and protesting does nothing. The villain cannot be deterred nor can the machines. Uncaring tools descend to the back of your nylon bodysuit and begin making pinpoint incisions. You wince hearing the material being split and opened between the whine of the servos. Another click of the remote and wiggling gloved machine hands wriggle out of their chambers, making a series of mechanical clicking as they float down to take advantage of the cuts in your heroic material. Grasping the torn outfit and pulling it aside, you scream out in sensation at the open air kissing your skin along the small of your back, behind your thighs, under your knees, along your shoulderblades and up your spine.
Your body's wiggles amuse them, as the smirk only grows with another click, their tongue poking out in concentration while working a dial. A new hum of machinery rises with the turn of the remote wheel, and feathery elements whoosh in from above. The fluffy puffy tipped tendrils slither down to meet your exposed spots, dipping into the slits of your bodysuit to flip and flutter around on your exposed skin.
"Tough cookie, huh? Let's see how you crumble." They remark, pinching your cheek and laughing maniacally when you snap in furious protest. The remote is held tauntingly close to your face so you can see every detail as the villain makes an innocent uhoh face before tapping a button to make the feathered tendrils twirl faster.
Despite an admirable lip clenching and teeth gritting, your tough sounds begin to slip. You cry out trying to fight off the squeaks. But your body is betraying you, your toughness begins to melt as the soft feathery sensations caress and graze at your thigh muscles, taunt your upper back and even begin teasing around your neck, floating side to side. Two fluffs are teasing and bullying behind your knees, dipping in and out of the slit held open by the hands.
Still, you manage to find strength by flexing your muscles and making like you are swimming in slow motion. That is, until another click and spinning dial starts a higher pitched squeal from the machinery.
"Hmm hmm hmm hmmm hmm~" They taunt, flashing those pearly teeth at you.
Drilling implements float down. You see them pass through one of the displays and their whirling pink surface makes you panic. You start squeaking all over, your growls mixed with pleads mixed with curses. Your captor snickers like a mischievous pixie as they step close to your face, and holds up the remote tapping an Engage button.
The bindings adjust and snap your ankles back to make your feet parallel to the ceiling. Two more servos scream down and cut under your toes then along your soles. The muffled sensation makes you scream out, and protest more when the hands reach to tear away the material to fully expose the undersides of your feet. Three sensations cut through the annoying feathery teases along your backsides, high pitched drilling begins with those new tools as they move to buff and torment your exposed feet starting from the heel up the sole to the toes. A third drill is working to the small of your back.
You think that one will at least be tolerable, but it quickly becomes the worst. Being tickled mercilessly on the small of your back grows from an annoyance to an all encompassing torture. The struggles in inspires make all the other tickles worse. Your muscles panic, you twist and thrash in your bindings, but they won't break. The tickly tools follow your every move, simply adjusting and reengaging every time you manage to pull away in a direction. The villain paces around and steps back, hand on their hip admiring the handiwork.
All through the teasing touches, the stimulation on your body, you've tried to ignore and fight a growing sensation. That itch, the wanting between your legs and across your chest. You've tried to fight it just as you've done your best to keep your voice from cracking out of its low tone. But your body's betrayal is complete when a moan manages to break through your now squeaky giggles and laughs. The villain's eyes light up right as your face explodes in blush. Your grunting tough sounds are quickly being converted to girly squeaks.
You can beg and plead all you like. It's not stopping, as below the chambers begin opening and the displays start to show the front of your body. Perhaps even worse than before now you can fully see the cutting tools and wiggly hands from below sliding out. Cuts are made in circles around your chest to expose your chest and rapidly swelling boy buttons.
Another circle brings your twitching navel to view, and a series of slits open your ribs. Your hips are next with tiny cuts opening them to the air, along with the fronts of your thighs. And finally, a slow moving tool rises to your royal hero area while hands hold your body steady. The sound of material ripping to open your heroic clitty to tickles and torment sends you into the worst struggling panic yet.
"You're so cute and sexy like this, you know that? Such a handsome squirmer all trussed up for me. You can fight all you like darling. I'm not turning it off."
