Announcement: KK-CK Fanfic Awards 2025
Tumblr media
Hello karate sensei's, students and those karate adjacent! This year is going to be a little different. Due to the busyness of most of the mods this will be the last* award ceremony we host. It feels fitting with the show's finale to try and go out with a bang, so we've decided to make some additional changes, like extending the qualifications. *If there's interest and enough people we can continue, but for now we're planning this to be the final. Rather than accepting nominations just for the year of 2024 we will accept nominations for any fics written/continued/finished from January 2024- February 28th, 2025. In March we'll start asking for help. Tasks include helping make polls (Google forms) for the 3 rounds we host. This includes Nominations, voting round 1 and Final voting round. They create the forms/polls, share them, check the validity of the nominations/votes, and then tally them so we can move on to the next round/determine the winners. We also need award makers. Once the final votes come in we generally give about a month or a little bit longer to break up the winners amongst the artists/award makers so they can read the fics and create an award, this can be art or moodboards which are submitted to be given out at the award ceremony. Our team of pollers and award makers help with the ceremony by announcing the winners and sharing the awards on Discord. This event is a fun way to celebrate the writers in our fandom and it's a large undertaking. The more hands we have to help the lighter the work for all. The current hope is to host the award ceremony this summer, so if you think you'll be interested in helping out, keep an eye out for those official calls for assistance come March. But if you have questions and want more details feel free to reach out before then.

The best dog breed for dnp tourney starts tonight and I've gained a brand new appreciation for tourney makers 😄 mine's tiny and yet it took ages to prepare. If you see any typos no you didn’t.
Polls are set for one day and I tried adding brief info but mostly it sounds exactly the same for like half of them. I advice googling if you want to have an idea what the breed is like
I'm praying I didn’t overlook anyone or any propaganda - please feel free to add your opinions to the polls
If I offend anyone's fave in some way I'm sorry in advance

I am curious what percentage of the population fits Jacopo-Belbo's definition of a functional adult (or, at least, the part of their definition they communicate in that post).
Jacopo-Belbo's declared standard for functional adulthood, in case you don't want to click the link (I'm not reblogging their post or tagging them on this because I judge it likely they'd be annoyed by that):
Re: ongoing first aid kit discourse, if you don’t have the following you’re not a functional adult: in-person Stop The Bleed training (USA, I don’t know about equivalent training in other countries, Google is free, stop asking me), NAR combat application tourniquets, Celox z-fold gauze, TacMed OLAES pressure dressing, NAR chest seals, and an annoying little bag to carry it all around in.
My offhand guess is that most people are not "functional adults" by this standard, so "if you don’t have the following you’re not a functional adult" here is roughly equivalent to "if you're a good person you wouldn't eat meat"; you can't really prove it wrong because of the inherent subjectivity of moral statements, but you can correctly point out that it's detached from the material conditions and normal standards of the society it was made in (and the person who made it probably knows that, and the statement reflects their belief in the superiority of their own standards over the normative ones of their society) and that lots of people who aren't "functional adults" by Jacopo-Belbo's definition are functional in the sense that they're getting by.
I don't actually have much data to back up that guess though, just some observations and inferences from my own experiences. So I decided to take advantage of Tumblr's new poll function to make a little calibration test of my intuitions. Also, that post does seem to have a lot of notes, and I'm curious how much of that is full agreement vs. reblogging to spread around the links and partial agreement but not fully endorsing it, and I think this poll might give me some sense of the probable rough breakdown of that.
I know Tumblr polls can be pretty unrepresentative because of social network effects, but I think this matter is probably going to be pretty orthogonal to the ways people who read my blog are likely to be unrepresentative of the general population.
Of course, one possible biasing factor is the post this is responding to stigmatizes not having this sort of preparation, and my poll question reproduces their framing for brevity. If it helps, a quick Google search says votes in Tumblr polls are anonymous, so you need not worry about being embarrassed, and you are completely free to reject Jacopo-Belbo's moral judgment about what answering "no" would say about you as a person (your thoughts are your own, after all). I'm not particularly interested in having a discussion about the reasonableness of their standards (which is why I haven't given my "take" on that question here), but I will note that at least in the richer and more stable countries nowadays most people will never have to treat a serious wound without assistance from medical professionals and this sort of wound-care training and supplies is one of those things where you'll probably never use it, but it's better to have it and not need it than to encounter a situation where you need it and don't have it. I'll also note that I suspect that post has an element of staking out a maximal position in response to maximal positions in the opposite direction (original discussion is here, here, and here if anyone wants to review it, I confess I have not done so because... well, look at the note count on the first one) and I'm not sure whether it's fully unironically endorsed by its own maker (the last criteria seems a little tongue-in-cheek).
Please note that I do not intend this post as an incitement to send internet hate mail to anyone; if you disagree with one of the participants in the linked threads and want to express your disagreement directly to them that's your right, but, like, I'm not encouraging that and if I wanted to start an argument with someone here I'd have reblogged or @ them. You do have my permission and encouragement to reblog this post to increase the sample size of my poll, though I'd prefer if this didn't get spread around too much.
I might pin this to the top of my Tumblr for a little while, to increase my sample size.
I think I forgot to switch the poll duration from 1 day to 1 week in my previous version of this post and I can't edit the poll once I've posted it, so I deleted and reposted with a 1 week limit. Sorry! However, @aurpiment already responded to my first version of this post, so I preserve their reply here:
Oh that’s my mutual! They were using hyperbolic language in frustration with another post on which there was discourseabout whether it’s reasonable to expect a household to have a first aid kit. Some people on that post thought first aid in general was unnecessary. I think you’re rather focused on the functional adult terminology. The spirit of their post is “of course you should know basic first aid, are you kidding me? It saves lives. It’s embarrassing to say first aid isn’t important. Go learn first aid for serious physical trauma.”

Ok, the poll-maker has declared chaos by this point in the tournament so I'll invite further chaos by inviting you all non-swedes to join this poll.
A brief summary: In Sweden there's a Christmas calender (julkalender) aired every day on in December leading up to Christmas. The story is new every year, but it is a children's show. @weirdthoughtsandideas has now made a tournament to decide which is the best Christmas calender. Three of my four favourites have ended up in the same heat and I need your help. Please vote for the one you find most appealing, here's a brief summary of each calender:
Mysteriet på Greveholm (the Mystery of Greveholm): a family longing to escape their narrow apartment (and the accusations that the dad ruined tv-watching for the entire nation) happens upon renting a castle through december. Turns out the castle is haunted by two ghosts set on keeping the place human-free. The children manages to befriend the ghosts, gets a mission from Santa (via his helpers- who play a surprisingly large role) to rescue christmas, makes an old space-robot come to life, rescues a princess cursed with eternal sleep and stops an evil count with eternal "life" by the use of dental hygiene. There are many things happening and the adventure is high throughout.
Pelle Svanslös (I think he's called Peter no-tail in english): based on a famous book-series for children. Pelle is a cat with only a short stump for tail, which the other cats tease him for. It's a story about ableism and choosing kindness, as Pelle keeps getting out of whatever trouble he gets put in by wits and kindness. It is more of a series of stories than one grand adventure. What brings it together is Pelle's courtship with Maja Gräddnos (one of the cats who were on his side from the start) and the bully Måns losing his power over the other cats more and more as Pelle gets more and more friends. There are no fantasy elements, save perhaps that the cats have a parallel miniature society to the humans.
Trolltider (Troll ages): a story about a village of small trolls and their local witch, fairy and the house gnome (idk how to translate Vätte, Google suggested Goblin but that is another type of vätte then he is), they are all approximately 10-15 cm high. It is just as Pelle svanslös a number of shorter stories strung together by their lives. The witch and the fairy are frenemies, always one small word from fighting each other, but always there for the other or the trolls when needed (though outwardly more grumpily on the witch's part). The house gnome is in charge of the local big ones (humans) home and make sure their lives flow smoothly. And the small trolls mostly just keep up their rituals to ensure the sun returns after winter (they all worship the sun) and in turns help and in turns play tricks on the others or each other. The story is a musical. One of the cutest things about the show is all the props that show how small they all are, the small trolls live in an old handbag and sleep in a shoe, the house gnome uses a thimble as a bucket to water the humans potted plants (the pots are taller than he) and the witch nearly gets trampled by a giant boot when she's out in the forest to name a few.
Pelle Svanslös also shows the size difference between the cats and humans with props, but the cats also seem to be able to make some cat sized items like milk canteens and newspapers, while others are human sized like playing cards and nail files.
Now vote whichever you like the most

a google form for a (POTENTIAL) RPG Maker tournament.. 2! (electric boogaloo)
i'm.....not running a second one right away, before anyone gets their hopes up! im taking a break before running the second. however, the first tournament had characters all picked by me only, and seeing how lots of tournament/contest blogs are opening google forms for suggestions, i thought it might be worth doing just that!
after the first poll being a protagonist-only tournament, i thought it would be quite fun to have an antagonist-only tournament. however, the submissions do not only have to be antagonists! there is a question in the form for whether or not you are submitting a character as 'general' or 'antagonist'. an antagonist tournament will only be possible if i get enough submissions for antagonist characters after all, and im sure theres lots of characters that dont fall into "antagonist" or "protagonist" that people would also like to submit. so thats what the general category is for. i wont be running both a 'general' and an 'antagonist only' tournament, which one it will be just depends on what submissions i get and if theres enough antagonist submissions to justify them having their own tournament. some small rules:
please refrain from submitting funamusea characters. they will always be excluded.
the definition im using for 'antagonist' is 'the character who acts in opposition to or causes most conflict with the protagonist'. they dont have to be strictly 'evil'.
character submitted for the antagonist tournament will still be counted and considered for the general character tournament. characters submitted for the general character tournament wont be counted for the antagonist tournament.
they have to be 'rpg maker style'. to include games that are technically not rpg maker but fit the general style, this means pixel style indie games with a very basic turn-based battle system (if there is any battles), often with a focus on atmosphere and story. there's some wiggle room here; your turn to die, despite not fitting the general style, is included due to its fame and influence in the rpg maker community. games like undertale and deltarune, although fitting many aspects of the rpg maker style, are not included due to their more complex battle systems and mechanics.
no characters from the protagonist poll will be included in the second tournament. if you've forgotten who they are, feel free to check below.
Ib, from Ib
Madotsuki, from Yume Nikki
Niko, from Oneshot
Viola, from The Witch's House
Aki Narukami, from Misao
The Batter, from OFF
Aya Drevis, from Mad Father
Allen Llewellyn, from Alice Mare
Russell Seager, from END ROLL
Noel Cerquetti, from Noel The Mortal Fate
Charlotte Wiltshire, from Hello Charlotte
Claire Elford, from Witch's Heart
Rachel Gardner, from Angels of Death
Goldia, from Pocket Mirror
Sunny, from OMORI
Sara Chidouin, from Your Turn To Die

Calling all MOAs
I’m currently in the process of making a TXT fairytale RPG maker game!
Basically, the player and their childhood friend get sucked into a storybook that has 5 tragic fairytales, it’s up to the player to find a way out, and change the tragic endings into happy endings!
I have a few things MOAs can participate in!
These include: the game’s title, the game’s title screen, and MOA messages
Game Title
I have a google form set up for MOAs to submit their title suggestion
When the deadline is up I’ll select 4 of my favourite titles and set them up in a 24 hour poll on Twitter for MOAs to vote
Rules for the title are in the description of the form
Title Screen
This is for the image that pops up when you first open the game!
Tumblr media
Details: The title screen size is 816x624
You don't need to have the game title or the little options window, those are added into the program
If you want to draw the members, please draw how they look in the game (ex: in the game Yeonjun has pink hair so don't draw him with a different colour)
For a reference of the members look at this post
*You don't need to add the members in the title screen! Only if you want to!
I'd prefer a magic/mystical/fantasy type of theme, since the game is about getting sucked into a magical fairytale book, other than that, you have total creative freedom!
Deadline: TBA
How to enter: Upload your image on either instagram, twitter, or tumblr  tag me and use the hashtag sneeeeziegames. If I pick your title screen I'll probably ask you to send it via email, so the game has a better quality version (screenshots from insta aren't the best lmao)
And of course you'll be credited in the game!!
*Entries sent via DM will not count, as well as entries submitted on other social media sites that aren't twitter/instagram/tumblr
MOA Messages
In the game I’ll have a special room where the player can read messages from MOA to TXT!
Max length: roughly a twitter post
Don’t forget to include your name/pronouns!
To submit either comment on this post or make your own tweet/post and tag me in it!
Bonus
Here’s a sneak peak!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also the game has character customization!
The game should be released sometime in August (hopefully) and will be uploaded on my itch.io account! I already made a stray kids one, so y’all can play that in the meantime! All my games will be free and are windows/mac only
If y'all have any questions feel free to ask! And if y'all post anything relating the any of my games please use the hashtag sneeeeziegames so I can check them out!

How to Use an Online Poll Creator for Free in Minutes
Online polls are one of the easiest and most effective ways to collect opinions, make decisions, and engage your audience. Whether you're conducting a survey, gathering team feedback, or running a social media poll, using a free poll maker can help you set up and share polls quickly.
In this guide, we’ll show you how to use an online poll creator free of charge in just a few simple steps.
Step 1: Choose the Right Free Poll Maker
Not all poll creators offer the same features. When selecting an online poll creator free, consider factors such as:
✔ Ease of Use – A simple interface makes poll creation faster.  ✔ Customization – Ability to change themes, colors, and question formats.  ✔ Voting Security – Options to prevent duplicate votes.  ✔ Analytics – Real-time tracking of responses.
Popular free poll makers include:
Qibble – User-friendly with multiple question types.
Google Forms – Simple and integrates with Google Sheets.
StrawPoll – Best for quick, no-sign-up polls.
Poll Maker – Offers advanced customization options.
Step 2: Create Your Poll
Once you’ve selected a platform, follow these steps to create your poll:
✅ 1. Sign Up or Start Without an Account
Many platforms allow instant poll creation without registration. However, signing up lets you track responses more effectively.
✅ 2. Choose Your Poll Type
Common options include:
Single-choice polls (participants select one answer).
Multiple-choice polls (voters can choose more than one answer).
Ranked voting (participants rank choices in order of preference).
✅ 3. Add Your Questions and Answers
Keep your questions clear and concise.
Offer balanced answer choices to avoid bias.
Use images or videos if your poll maker supports multimedia options.
Step 3: Customize Your Poll
Make your poll engaging and visually appealing by:  ✔ Changing colors and fonts to match your brand.  ✔ Adding a logo for personalization.  ✔ Setting a deadline for voting, if needed.
Some free poll makers also allow password protection or CAPTCHA verification for secure voting.
Step 4: Share Your Poll
After creating your poll, it’s time to distribute it. Most online poll creators free of charge offer multiple sharing options:
📌 Direct Link – Copy and share the URL via email, social media, or messaging apps.  📌 Embed Code – Place the poll directly on your website or blog.  📌 QR Code – Let users scan and vote instantly.
Tip: Share your poll on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, or WhatsApp to reach a larger audience.
Step 5: Analyze the Results
One of the best features of an online poll creator free is the ability to track real-time results. Here’s what to look for:
✔ Number of Votes – Monitor engagement levels.  ✔ Voting Trends – Identify patterns and preferences.  ✔ Demographic Insights – Some tools provide location-based voting data.
Most free poll makers offer downloadable reports to help you analyze responses effectively.
Conclusion
Creating a poll online is easier than ever with the right free poll maker. Platforms like Qibble, Google Forms, and Poll Maker let you design, share, and analyze polls in minutes. Whether for business, education, or entertainment, using an online poll creator free can help you engage your audience and make data-driven decisions.
Start your poll today and collect instant feedback! 🚀

Future Us
Life has been hectic as ever.
Being a struggling law student does not make it any better. Taking law was not as easy as the 16 year old you had imagined. As a 16 year old, your thoughts of law was more to talking in court, defending the wrongly accused. Past you did not think of the hardships and the journey itself to become an actual attorney. Now entering a new semester, you have even more workload to hand in to your very tiresome lecturer.
You can feel the library’s cushioned chair now warming your bums as your mind goes haywire from all the typing you had to do for your next assignment. You would usually do your work in the library since free wifi was provided there even though the wifi would go down every once in a while.
You typed in a few more words in before you bring your arms over your head and stretched the life out of yourself.
“Give yourself a rest, man.” , says Sofea who was sitting across from you, a black pen in hand scribbling random notes in her mini notebook. You were so focused on trying to get your work done you completely forgot the existence of your other friend.
“I just wanna get this over with.” you replied now resting your head on your right hand, supporting it from your chin.
“You’ve been on it for hours now. Chill down a bit. Due date is in 2 weeks time anyway. You’re always pushing yourself like this.” Sofea says now rolling her eyes  while giving you the dirtiest look.
You frowned, not knowing what to reply back. What Sofea said is true. You sometimes overwork so much until fever starts engulfing you. Last minute work is just not your thing, you were always the first one in your department to hand in your work.
You sighed as you bring your hands together and place it above the keypads once again to continue what you started.  Your finger then hovered above the touchpad for a split second before you glided your finger across it to click on the 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘨𝘭𝘦 icon. You would need to search up a few informations on the internet for your next paragraph.
You typed out the words rather hastily on the google search section and clicked on the magnifying glass icon. The page refreshes itself but nothing loaded. You kept clicking on the refresh button hoping for the page to load. The page refreshes itself once again before directing you to the T-rex Dinosaur Game. Your eyes quickly glanced at the “wifi” icon, bottom right corner only to see a banned sign on it.
“Ah, shit. The wifi is down again today.” you say as you lean back against your chair letting out yet another long sigh.
“Hm? Really?” Sofea replied while pulling her phone out of her left pocket to check whether  the connection is really out. “Oh yeah…I didn’t even notice. Oh well, that’s a sign for you to give it a rest Rania.”
“Yeah, yeah whatever.” as you leaned towards your laptop again, a finger on your 𝑠𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑒 button.
𝘔𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘢𝘴 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘣𝘺 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘨𝘢𝘮𝘦,  you thought silently to yourself.
A minute passed and the game only made your stress worst. The jumping dinosaur on the screen of your laptop is slowly annoying the shit out of you.
𝘑𝘶𝘮𝘱 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘱𝘪𝘥 𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘢𝘶𝘳. The clicking of your space button becomes faster each second before you stopped when the dinosaur runs itself into a cactus.
𝘜𝘨𝘩 𝘪 𝘩𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘨𝘢𝘮𝘦. 𝘐 𝘩𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘰.
A tinge of familiarity suddenly hits you.
𝘞𝘢𝘪𝘵, 𝘋𝘪𝘯𝘰?
“Ah, Dino.”
The memory came rushing back.
7 years ago you made an anime fan account on twitter out of curiosity and boredom. Your first icon was a picture of Hanako-Kun from the anime Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun. You remember everything so well. The friends you’ve made there, the posts that blew up and the little fanfics you wrote of your favourite anime characters.
Dino was a friend you made on anime twitter. What a funny name now that you think about it. She was the first few friends you made along with someone named Elis. Elis on the other hand was someone you knew in real life and is still in touch with till this day. In fact, you were gonna go grab lunch with her right after this library session with Sofea.
The three of you were in a big group chat once too, where you met your closest friends on anime twitter. The group chat had the weirdest name, it was Foot Pic Store. FPS for short. The group chat consists of 30 members,  28 or 25? You don’t remember, but Dino was in it.
Dino was known as the angst writer on anime twitter along with another member named Jo. The both of them would always write heartbreaking stories that would leave you dumbfounded, hungry for more.  Dino is probably somewhere out there, rich and still crying over kageyama. Meanwhile Jo was recently accepted to an animation company to work as one of the animators.
There was someone who was from Oklahoma too. Kiah. She played on the national’s team once for volleyball. However, she didn’t continue her life career as a volleyball player and is now studying somewhere in California. Kiah was known as Dee’s so-called-girlfriend in FPS, another member in FPS. Dee bullies the other members a lot but she’s actually the sweetest person you would ever meet. Dee has been travelling a lot lately, not that you know how and where she’s getting all the money from. Probably found herself a rich Arabic man,  𝑊𝘩𝑎𝑡 𝑎 𝑑𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑚 is what she would say.
Speaking of travelling, another member of FPS is currently studying to become a pilot, Ira. You would usually call them beansie or beans as a nickname because they had a baked beans icon for a few days due to losing a bet made between them and their other friends.
“Beans” was also a ship name for the second youngest members in FPS, Bea and Anne. The memory of them screaming of how big an anime character’s private part is in the group chat was still fresh in your mind, especially Anne. Back in the days, Anne would randomly send pictures of her eyes to get conjunctivitis with you. What a weirdo, but who would’ve thought that weirdo would be studying to become an ophthalmologist. On the contrary, despite the young age, Bea is already working as a manager in one of the biggest franchise in her country.
Speaking of which, you have a few other members who was the same age as you too, Raya and Teddy. Raya is currently studying in one of the most  well known med school meanwhile Teddy is working her ass off to become a successful programmer of some sorts.
Most of the other members are still studying now too. Kaye is currently studying to become a chemist, Ren is studying to become better in cybersecurity to become an ethical hacker, Angi is continuing her studies in the economical field and Allie, just like you, is studying in the faculty of law.
The older generations of FPS are already working. Jade had just graduated and is now working as a new attorney, Ballan is a successful film maker by making films that would leave a big impact on the audience, Riv is working as a cardiothoracic surgeon and Cee has a job that that helps the ones in needs with her skills.
Sora and Ken on the other hand are living life to the fullest.  Ken is currently living with her friends with a few pet animals to make it more lively and is now working as a zoologist. Sora is now living in Japan with the love of her life and is taking care of her grandparents while balancing her life with school counseling.
You’ve lost contact with a few other members like Cat and Arrielle, but according to Elis, they are doing well in life as well.
As for Hannah, she now has a job she’s happy with and is living with the best partner she could have asked for. Back then, all she wishes for was to find happiness and to be happy. You’re glad things are going well for her even though there are times where life gets rough, but you know she’s strong enough to go through it.
Remembering all the old events 8 years ago made you somewhat emotional. The late night calls, the online games, the skipping school to chat, the roleplaying, the rigging every poll ever made on anime twitter, the horny chats, the matching layouts…
𝑩𝒁𝒁𝒁𝑻
A vibration from your phone  cuts you off from your daydream.
𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐬: 𝘳𝘢𝘯 𝘪𝘮 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦
“Ah, Sof I gotta go now” you say as you start packing up your notes and laptop into your lemon yellow tote bag.
“Elis is here?”
“Mhm.” You nod, still packing everything up.
“Oh by the way Rania, you made online friends before right?”
“Yeah, why?” you replied as you stood up pushing the chair under the table and slung your tote bag over your shoulder.
“Are you guys still in contact?” Sofea asked.
“Oh-“
𝑩𝒁𝒁𝒁𝑻
Another vibration from your phone cuts you off from finishing your sentence. You unlocked the screen of your phone and glided your hand in a downward motion on your screen, pulling the notification bar down.

“Hello?” Sofea said while waving a hand in front of you, clearly wanting the attention from you.
“Oh, sorry. What was the question again?”
“I was wondering if you’re still in contact with them.”
You paused as a smile starts forming itself on your lips,
“Yeah,” you replied,
“we’re still in contact.”

Add Engagement With Interactive Media Plugins for WordPress
Visual engagement is an indispensable part of any website. Without it users won't engage with your content. It also means that you are not reaching any audience or grabbing attention, which in turn means you have no conversions and no revenue.
You need to create visual engagement that leads to satisfying user experiences that in turn create high conversions and high revenue.
But managing the large amount of images, audio, and videos you need to make your website function effective requires a lot of space and organization. You need plugins to save you time.
WordPress media is an umbrella term a large number of plugins including media library management plugins to interactive media plugins like audio, video, flipbooks, galleries, maps, countdown clocks, notifications, timelines, popups, and forms.
In this article I will show you some different types of WordPress media plugins available on CodeCanyon.

Understanding WordPress Media Plugins
Visuals are the best way to optimize your pages and content. Visual elements are called media. Media includes but is not limited to images, audio, video, animation, and so on.
Countdown clocks, contact forms, timelines, buttons, maps, notifications, icons, avatars, popups are also all media and are crucial to the success of a website.
When it comes to understanding WordPress media you have to start from the Media Library where you manage images, audio, video, and documents. The media library allows you to upload and manage media files, add images to posts, and even do quick edits to your images. You can also create galleries and subfolders.
But Media Library has a limit. If you run a website that requires few images then the built-in WordPress Media Library is enough. However, if you run large websites that require a lot of images, videos, audio, and more then you will need to use a media library management plugin. You will also need to use plugins specific to each different media element, for example gallery plugins for images, audio plugins for audio, video plugins for video and so on.
Types of WordPress Media Plugins
WordPress media plugins help you create, upload, store, manage, and display different kinds of media. In short, provide tools for managing and displaying your media.
The list below is not exhaustive but it shows what is included under the umbrella of WordPress media plugins:
media library management plugins: organizing and processing images, video or other media
interactive media plugins: for creating interactive experiences on your site
image builder plugins: for designing and creating new images using layers and effects
map plugins: for creating and displaying maps
galleries plugins: for displaying images
audio or video plugins: for adding audio or video players to your site
iframe plugins: for embedding other content on your site in an iframe
social media plugins: for embedding content from social media
avatar plugins: for displaying or creating user avatars
icons plugins: make it easy to add icons to your site
button plugins: for creating eye-catching buttons like CTAs (call to actions)
countdown plugins: for showing a countdown to some important event
What Do WordPress Media Management Plugins Do?
Different WordPress plugins work differently and what they do varies.  But in general they help you:
categorize items according to theme, size, and more
add, delete, arrange, and sort items in the media library
add titles to media
do batch upload and add many images quickly
provide external storage for your media
manage how users interact with your media for example users can click on images and open them in separate pages.
Why Should You Use WordPress Media plugins?
They extend the functionality of your website back-end so it can handle large volumes of media.
They make your website more attractive to bring in users.
They allow users to easily navigate images and media on your website.
They increase user engagement and as a result conversions and profits.
They improve the SEO ranking of your website on search engines.
Things to Consider When Choosing a Media Plugin
Speed: You want a lightweight plugin that won’t slow down your website.
Features: Think about storage, integration with social networks, email marketing platforms, and payment gateways
Responsiveness and mobile-friendliness: More than 70% of traffic to websites comes from mobile devices. Does your media plugin work on mobile browsers?
Ease of use: You shouldn't require coding knowledge to be able to use Media plugins. They should be easy to use and customize.
Security: Users trust you with their personal and financial data. Choose media plugins that have a great track record when it comes to security.
Regular Updates: Regular updates solve security vulnerabilities. Choose a plugin with a track record of updates and maintenance.
Cost: Compare the prices of other plugins and see what fits your budget.
Ratings and reviews: What other users say is proof of quality of the plugin and the trustworthiness of the developer.
Downloads: The number of downloads is proof of popularity of the plugin among users. It shows they trust the provider.
Support: You may run into some issues. Make sure that the seller offers support. See what other users say about the quality of support from the provider.
WordPress Media Plugins on CodeCanyon
On CodeCanyon, will find many popular and best-selling WordPress media plugins that will make your website engaging to visitors. To help with your selection, I’ve classified them according to the categories below.

The Media Library is where you can manage your images, audio, videos, and documents all in one place. The default WordPress Media Library is sufficient to manage a limited number of images. But business, magazine, and large blogging websites that regularly upload large numbers of images need plugins for efficient management of media files.
These top media management plugins will help you manage your media library.

RECENT NEWS, RESOURCES & STUDIES, May 2019
Tumblr media
Welcome to my latest summary of recent news, resources & studies including search, analytics, content marketing, social media & ecommerce! This covers articles I came across from May 3 to May 30, although some may be older than that.
I am out of town June 10-16, so I cannot predict when the next edition will come out, but I will do my best to make it before the June trip. I’ve recently narrowed my reading list so that I can get through it more quickly and post these more often. If you have any suggestions or comments, please let me know!
TOP NEWS & ARTICLES
If you had your entire promoted listing budget eaten up by clicks on an item with “shoe” in the searchable keywords, contact Etsy to make sure you will be refunded.
Etsy was accidentally suspending some shops for not using Etsy Payments, but they are in ineligible countries. Some but not all drop ship or use fulfillment in countries with Etsy Payments, but that doesn’t appear to explain all the errors.
Mailchimp launches a new marketing platform that integrates multiple marketing needs, not just emails. Pricing will stay the same for existing customers for the time being.
On the same topic, here is a study of various email services, and their different deliver-ability rates.
Etsy is being sued after a child dies, strangled by an amber necklace bought on Etsy. [video & article] This is getting a fair amount of media attention. Not covered in many stories is the fact that the daycare employees didn’t call 911 at first, and the day home had more infants that day than they were licensed for.
Better media attention: disappointed in the long delay for the introduction of the Harriet Tubman $20 bill in the US, an Etsy seller designed a stamp buyers can use to cover up Jackson’s face with Tubman’s. “Harriet Tubman” is a trending search on Etsy frequently since these articles, so this media coverage is really bringing traffic to the site.
Amazon is now using packing machines in a few of its warehouses that replace 12 workers each. They have other warehouse automation, too, & just started work on their hub at the Cincinnati airport. If you need any more evidence that diversification is the key to successful businesses, remember that they make the biggest chunk of their profit on their cloud services.
ETSY NEWS
This year, Etsy’s Maker Cities program (US only) has joined up with Mastercard for their grants. Applications are due July 3, and there is a webinar on June 3 with more info and instructions. [links in article]
They’s also extended their Design Awards submission deadline to June 4. Check out their FAQ if you have any questions.
Etsy released a summer update to their spring/summer trends guide, with some useful search data. Clothing shoppers are interested in vintage styles, “with Etsy searches for “70s” and “90s” up 26% and 7% year over year.” I summarized the earlier report here.
In case you missed it, Etsy released their first quarter financial report for 2019, & I summarized it in the Etsy forum.
In related news, Etsy ranks 3rd in USA Today's list of the top 20 fastest growing retailers in the world, even ahead of Amazon.
Some businesses are competing based on delivery speed, but Etsy is able to do well with much slower shipping. (That’s a nice feature in an article they didn’t write; not all good promotion is paid.)
I can’t remember if I posted this interview with Etsy chief financial officer Rachel Glaser before, so here it is again. [audio file/podcast and short text excerpt. Please note I have contacted Etsy about the photos & search comment, but they have not yet replied, other than with the usual links to Etsy’s search guide.]
Short piece on Etsy’s approach to diversity. Spoiler alert - they like it, and the article links to other materials demonstrating why this is the best approach for businesses.
SEO: GOOGLE & OTHER SEARCH ENGINES
If you want to get your website or blog material ranking faster, Moz has some tips for you. Note that the first part in particular contains advanced-level technical tips, but most of the rest is easier to grasp for non-techies. It’s worth a skim!
But don’t break Wikipedia rules to get your images on top - North Face got caught doing that, & had to apologize. But “[f]rom Leo Burnett Tailor Made's original statement, it seems the agency was anticipating such a reaction to the North Face effort all along. In stunts like these, the ensuing controversy and attention around it can be part of the overall campaign goal and strategy.”
Once your website starts getting Google traffic, it is not unusual for growth to start to slow or even stop completely, but there are things you can do to avoid that.
Despite many people insisting that longer blog posts are necessary for good Google ranking, there is no ideal length for a blog post.
Here’s a good list of free SEO tools; note that some are paid tools that have a limited free version.
Links on other high-quality websites still matter to Google. (Most of us won’t be able to do the link-building that this test did, but the test demonstrates how much the links are worth. So if you aren’t ranking, realize that other people linking to your page is probably a big factor.) Some of your pages might fit perfectly on a resource page/site, if they answer a question or uniquely fill a need. You can find link opportunities on Twitter through following certain hashtags and engaging with the users.
Google search results now include podcasts. “This feature doesn’t only search for the title or meta data of the podcasts but also can search for the audio – as Google transcribes them — directly within the podcast show itself.”
As of July 1, Google will use the mobile version of all new websites for their index, so make sure that you have a good mobile set up on any new websites (or old ones, for that matter, since most web traffic is mobile these days).
There was a possible Google search update around May 9, then May 22, and now maybe May 29th. Google updates its algorithm a lot, if you hadn’t already noticed.  "To give you a sense of the scale of the changes that Google considers, in 2010 we conducted 13,311 precision evaluations to see whether proposed algorithm changes improved the quality of its search results, 8,157 side-by-side experiments where it presented two sets of search results to a panel of human testers and had the evaluators rank which set of results was better, and 2,800 click evaluations to see how a small sample of real-life Google users responded to the change.” (and some people think Etsy tests a lot LOL)
CONTENT MARKETING & SOCIAL MEDIA (includes blogging & emails)
Have popular content on one platform/site? You can repurpose it to use elsewhere, for maximum reach. It’s less work than coming up with brand new ideas all of the time!
Micro-influencers may work best for most businesses, because they can speak directly to your target market.
There are proven ways to get more social media followers; it’s not just luck.
Up-to-date infographic on the ideal sizes for social media images, by platform.
Facebook announced several upcoming plans at their annual developer conference, including a desktop redesign. Facebook has also changed the video algorithm to favour posts that people watch for longer, and to disfavour posts that are just repurposing old video.
Tweetdeck is rolling out more updates, including emojis and the ability to set up polls within the app. I use it, & I like it - I wish they had a phone app!
If you are using LinkedIn, you may be missing some great tricks to get more attention.
ONLINE ADVERTISING (SEARCH ENGINES, SOCIAL MEDIA, & OTHERS)
Here’s how you can get better results out of Microsoft ads (formerly Bing ads)
There was a bug in Google ads stats for April 30 & May 1st; they are working on fixing it.
Google advertising can be very confusing, so here as some tips on mistakes you should avoid. [video with transcript] They also recently announced some upcoming changes.
Etsy shops can only buy their own Google Shopping ads through Etsy’s program, or you can let Etsy buy them for your shop, but if you want to advertise your website, here is a great starter guide.
Chrome is giving you more control over cookies so that you can avoid more targeted ads. Some point out this is not necessarily as user-friendly as it sounds - it means Google can stop other companies from tracking their ad performance while Google has all those records through Chrome & other tools.
Facebook is also giving users more control over tracking for ads, & advertisers are not happy.
STATS, DATA, OTHER TRACKING
You are going to be surprised that Russian search engine Yandex has a really good Webmaster tools package.
ECOMMERCE NEWS, IDEAS, TRENDS
Some people are comparing Walmart’s new online wedding shop to Etsy, "with tons of personalized wedding gifts to buy on a budget.”
The coverage of Amazon’s big announcement about one-day shipping with Prime (in the US) mostly missed the fact that Amazon can already deliver to 72% of the US population in one day.
Amazon employees told some third-party sellers that religious items were banned from the site - but it wasn’t true.
Big Commerce now has a plug-in for Wordpress blogs.
As promised, Zibbet has added Etsy to its integrations, which allows you to list on Zibbet and it will automatically be added to Etsy as well. This is only going to be useful once they add other platforms (since Zibbet has no traffic), so shop around if you are interested in this sort of tool, as other companies are doing the same things. Indiemade websites completely integrate with Etsy, for example, and they have more website tools.
BUSINESS & CONSUMER STUDIES, STATS & REPORTS; SOCIOLOGY & PSYCHOLOGY, CUSTOMER SERVICE
With increased discussion of free shipping on Etsy recently, this is a good time to review some of the more recent studies & surveys on the topic.  One US report from January shows that buyer expectations in this area continue to increase. Shipping cost is a big factor in purchase decisions, & shipping costs are a common reason for cart abandonment. There are a variety of ways to calculate how to offer free shipping without losing money. (Thank you to Rebecca for the last link!)
If you want more shares on social media, this study on the top 5 reasons people share things online will be useful. But Americans are now more engaged by mobile games than social media, which has implications for app development and advertising.
Googly eyes make people donate more.
Smaller online businesses tend to make very specific types of customer service mistakes that harm your ability to compete. Although there isn’t always much you can do about the fact that “37% of customers expect a response within an hour“.
Can everyone read and understand your web page? Easy-to-understand English is an important aspect of accessibility.
Help Scout produces some fabulous material on customer service; here is a great article on value propositions, with examples, and another on how to collect customer feedback, including analyzing your stats package to see where customers are having trouble with your site.
MISCELLANEOUS (including humour)
Trend alert: more professional women switching purses for backpacks.
You can now control how long Google retains data on you.
You can also join the class action against major US telecom companies that sold your location data.
Another example of a company getting people to post photos so it can develop facial recognition technology.
Some businesses are offering products & services based on your DNA & other biological markers.
Most people worldwide over the age of 15 have a cell phone, although not all are regular users.
If you are concerned about internet privacy, & hate tracking, the browser Brave may be worth a look. (I haven’t tried it yet, but it comes well-recommended from various tech people I respect.)
Burger King has trolled McDonald's in ads & social media posts for years, & it can be pretty funny. “When McDonald’s abruptly and surprisingly lost its trademark on “Big Mac” in the EU earlier this year, Burger King couldn’t help but rub some salt in the wound. BK’s Swedish operations decided to celebrate for a day by offering a menu of “Not Big Macs” such as “The Like a Big Mac, But Actually Big” and “The Big Mac-ish But Flame-Grilled of Course.”

On the subject of Making
From: Garnet Hertz
I made a Google Form to collect ideas in regards to an organization to fill the gap left after Make threw in the towel and closed their doors. The full responses are included below. At this point, it looks like something will be organized for sure... or at least I'll be starting up something. Thanks to Mitch Altman, Karen Marcelo and members of Nettime for sharing. There are piles of good ideas here: which of these do you think are the most important?
Here are the raw, unedited responses to the question "If you were running an open source maker-oriented organization that filled the gap left by Maker Media ceasing operations, how would you run it and what would you focus on?"
76 responses:
• Model it after dorkbot but instead of having meetings it can be geared around smaller regional Faires
• I would run it as a non profit and make sure that there are people from all over the world representing. Not only so US focused.
• Focus on low tech and tech critism...as much as possible far from western culture...let say the gambiara creative movement in LATAM (brazil) or Cuban style repair culture guerilla, community envisioned and run publications/workshops/happenings without the 'red tape' so often discussed as part of the Maker Media legacy. so, no forced branding, no forced commonalities (other than perhaps a shared manifesto), no minimum number of participants or fundraising requirement for it to be a 'real' event of the community, and much less of a focus on attracting, and then satisfying, corporate sponsors.
• Should be about critical making, open source, skill sharing, critical thinking and more...
• I think the most important thing is to help local people meet up with each other in person. This should go far beyond people who already go to a hackerspace - this is something that Make did well by bringing together all sorts of people from children, university students, hackers, artists, etc. I don't think this has to be large scale.
• Member-run co-operative; leadership positions only for women; women-only days; focus on understanding biases built into technologies and imagining ways around this (critical technical practice)
• Money. Without money you can’t go far
• Projects how tos. Wait. That's Instructables. Never mind.
• cats, and i'd not run it... i would do unconferences, get space, and allow people, provide limited scheduling facilities.
• Support groups with least access to money, education, and resources to setup, lead, and run such an entity.
• I would focus on local groups with local, f2f contacts and a (funding-)mechanism to facilitate the exchange of primarily people as visiting makers instead data-platforming and global marketing.
• A mostly decentralised movement that prioritises shared ideas over branding, focusing on providing easy-access models for small, local communities to start shared spaces and hold events.
• I'd make an organisation of organisations, and invite contributions from different organisations. If I was making a publication, I think I'd go with an interview format and I'd interview two or more organisations at once - inviting them to discuss their operations, their experiences and their hopes, together.
• Ideally, a new organization would be a resource, and not an organization. I think open-source maker communities are singular to the their local communities and their local interests. A global community that allowed the specificity of local/regional interests to shine is more important to me than an 'engineered' (imposed?) idea of maker-dom. I enjoyed the broad definition of making that Maker Media cast, but I think the organization was actually dominated by specific technologies and approaches to technology. I'd like to see an organization that could get past that.
• I would focus on positive technology that attempts to help us instead of just consumer goods
• Community building by featuring projects by makers through events and publications.
• I'm not sure if it needs a replacement, aren't the maker faires run independently? Also a printed magazine isn't something that many technology interested people buy in 2019. A website that collects nice projects and tutorials would be enough.
• Education of kids. the best energy seemed to be in helping people learn
• On content by the community (electronic media) and events
• I would run it as a collective that will use their power to make an impact in society. Use the power of us, humans to make our home planet better. I would focus on philosophy and ideas, since ideas are bulletproof and no one can’t take them away.
• n my market no matter the name of a brand, people do not come because the brand comes to create community
• Non-profit, volunteer-based, brutally and radically self-sustaining.
• a bit like hackaday but with a broader focus
• Celebrating and sharing builds.
• I currently part of a maker oriented NGO in Mexico, and our experience is that there are a lot of oportunities to fund and create open content. We get funds from bigger organizations like USAID, Save theCHildren and others to fund open programs like meteorito.io or robolution,mx, that anyone who speak spanish can use.
• Sustainability is challenge. What happened to Maker Media will happen again if you are a single entity trying to make ends meet. I would rather take a different approach. More about it below.
• I would still run it as a media and marketing company. Similar to how many makerspaces stay funded by offering production, design and development services utilizing their existing resources to for-profit companies. By providing some form of value-added business in a tangential indistry separate from the niche maker media was filling, (I know, you had the magazine, but magazines aren't big money makers these days. I'm thinking of something like a peer-to-peer lending platform that allows makerspaces and small businesses to fund expansion or a marketing and development support agency and platform that sells a specific set of services or products. ) that then turns around and uses it's profits to fund the sort of programs Maker Media was running. Does it suck to end up spending 80% of your time designing a UX system for a loan platform instead of planning maker faires? Yep. But a separate business organization that just has a charter to provide funding for a maker-centric organization out of it's profits can survive a bad turn a lot easier than the two being the same organization.
• Reach out to schools and do lots of mini fairies and training to get kids ready for the faire...
• Youth and education. If you inspire the next generation you guarantee longevity.
• I would not take VC. I would make an education and technology outreach non profit. I would make it just an events company, focussing on a few big, profitable events in a year in less expensive locations plus smaller community events. It doesn't have to make a killing, just enough to make ends meet.
• I am always more interested in seeing what strange things individuals make instead of groups.
• alternative energy
• I'd focus on reaching kids who don't have a ton of money, and teaching them how to get started on a shoestring in the world of making. Stop with satellite design and get into how to use openscad, how to tune a budget printer, things like that. Maybe teach people how to bring this stuff into schools and get started there. Maybe showcase some kids programming stuff each issue.
• Exclusive: Magazine, limited pre-release hardware, baubles. Growth: YouTube
• As a non profit.
• Focus on education to the widest audience. Not sure of the best model for running.
• A shared interest organization like Foundation or Cooperation on regional based clusters. Focus should be on life long learning and sharing resources and knowledge.
• Not For Profit - Focus on inclusion and education of the core making skills that are developed through designing, building and coding.
• coop, not too pricy, but not free
• Accessible workshops and showcases of diverse creators.
• Event organization to have people meeting all together
• A web/editorial site, with a modest branching off to video. I would not do the maker fairies and events because I am not good at event planning. But I would TOTALLY love to go to some more maker faires as both an attendee, and a presenter
• Building projects together as a group.
• I would run it with the goal of educating and providing tools to communities regarding electronics and maker skills
• Non-profit. Non-exclusive. Encouraging. Run by a team who think deeply about the impacts of their actions and go to great lengths to learn both in their areas of personal interest and in areas that are for the good of the global community.
• Non-profit with a benevolent dictator. Org holds the brand, collects grants, and gives out money city by city to recognize what people are already doing. The org would also certify maker educational content and products as a revenue stream through an open access review process, similar to academic journal reviewing. That said, primary focus would be on building awareness.
• Online daily content(curating from sources worldwide), long term brand partnership, spotlight on the makers themselves, low on staff- use local partners for all events
• how to run an organization is a question for an online poll?, I don't know even how to cook
• i would focus on keeping on supporting the community
• Creativity, diversity, inclusivity
• I run a Bangalore based social business by the name of "Makespace and Open Source Creativity" (www.bangaloremakepsace.org) and we are fully sustainable and have been operating successfully for the last 5 years. We gain revenues by hosting and conducting workshops for the local maker community as well as organize multiple events where the maker community can come together, collaborate in real time, and create connections to start their own "maker ventures". We focus on the "social business" model so it avoids incurring massive debts and costs. Everything is volunteer driven.
• The way it was run isn't a problem. It wasn't a leadership issue,it was a lack of sponsorship. The big tech companies didn't care anymore. Perhaps big events should be nixed in exchange for small local maker faire events.
• Let the healthy events operate themselves. Create a minimalist amount of requirements.
• Forming a non-profit board would be the first step. I personally like consensus-based models like the Circle Way with traditional models like Parlimentary procedure used as needed. I think major focus should be placed on education (NOT just for kids!), supporting novel technologies and models especially when it comes to sustainability, and providing access to the tools, skills and mindsets behind making to diverse communities.
• I subscribed to their magazine once and while I found it interesting, everything seemed a bit advanced and over my head. It would help if they had some material for beginners.
• Make it a playground open for all
• I imagine that organization embedded inside individual educational institutions and organisation. That way it becomes financially sustainable and viable.
• It'd continue to run and focus on education.
• Too tough to answe succinctly , maker faire
• Community is the critical component, and events like Maker Faire have been amazing places to visit that help keep the community active and contributing even when remote.
• Critical social maker issues.... improving urban environments, developing countries, citizen infrastructure solutions
• I would operate with advocacy and accessibility in mind. I would focus on how the maker movement can provide opportunity and equity to people underserved by institutionally-oriented models of production, research and business. I would look for opportunities not only to generate and platform content to this end, but also to find synergy with peers and indies. I would seek to publish quality instructional material, and also journalism on the maker community. I think a guiding principle should be elevating the maker movement's reach and relevancy in local economies.
• If i were? I think, I am
• I believe that Maker Faire actually had difficulty in getting makers to register over time because of bad feelings due to the fact that the business model was for-profit but MF gave no equity to the makers, who are literally the reason for the event. I would hope that such a future organization would be not-for-profit. In the long term, maybe it could even sponsor makers with projects of enormous scope.
• An open source franchise model with a common virtual platform to share "how-to", technical help forums, show and tell, etc. This should be supported with low member fee. Also needed are blueprints on how to have a brick and morter makerspace connecting into the franchise model.
• Would change the name, like Tech or DIY meetups.
• Membership based, maybe with organizational members (like hackerspaces) • 501c3, The community
• My favorite part of Maker Media was the Maker Faires.
• Considering the raise of streaming platforms as YouTube, I would focus on keep doing content and publish or online, keeping the already big community around Maker media.
• Kids first, then hobbyists
• Stop trying to claim the word "Make" as IP and focus on enabling and building the community through faires, meetups, clubs, forums, talks, etc. Give makers a place to go to meet each other, and an audience for their works. Don't promote "maker tax" businesses, but show how DIY can be cheap enough for everybody. Less STEM, less kids, more technical.
• I would run it as a distributed co-op, focussing on sustainability and radical change.
• I'd focus on highlighting the work of underrepresented folks from the start. Without conscious effort, it's easy to show a fairly homogeneous subset of the community.
These are the raw/unedited responses for the question "If you had to pick only one thing for an open source maker-oriented organization to focus on, what would it be?"
• Community
• Smaller annual festivals (east bay maker Faire is a good size) organizing small gatherings so makers can meet makers
• check out OPEN BIDOUILLE CAMP
• maximising the good maker/craft engagements already happening on the grassroots level, rather than taking credit for them.
• Curating
• Small local events for people to show their projects and meet each other.
• Feminism
• Anything and Everything - once the money part of the game is taken care of. Without money, there is no chance to make
• Project how tos. Ugh.
• cats
• For making to focus on local need.
• I would focus on facilitating small-to-medium group ownership of open source projects as common-pool resources.
• Increasing diversity of the maker community by lowering the barrier to entry (financially, geographically, socially).
• Sustainability & Engagement. Yes, I know it looks like two things, but it's not. By this I don't just mean environmental sustainability, I also mean economic and social sustainability: Who's engaged? How is that broadened over time? And how does the organisation sustain itself? In many cases, the answer to "How does the organisation sustain itself?" will lead, by implication, to answering the question "Who is engaged?". (eg: A fablab that's in the orbit of a university will tend only to engage students! eg2: A glossy magazine about the "maker lifestyle" will tend only to engage middle class makers.)
• empowerment
• Teaching self sufficiency
• Ensuring at least one big event was happening annually to get makers together showing their projects.
• Accumulate interesting and useful projects, ideas etc.
• Helping kids create
• Events
• The idea that we can hack the planet for good
• in the community and not in the brands
• Facilitating cooperation, since this is the main thing that individual/independent makers lack in comparison to larger (corporate) structures.
• tutorials
• Celebrating and sharing builds
• Content creation
• Education and Outreach, I think the Make magazine and books were a great enablers.
• By far, I would pair down to just operating a online news site and the maker faires. I'd look at how Cracked brought itself back from the dead as an example.
• Tools to train kids to put on makerfaires
• Support the demonstrating makers
• Outreach focussed events - big ones and community ones. • These events have *enormous* impact on human beings and can make money.
• alternative energy
• Education and levelling the playground socially. This stuff doesn't have to be stupid expensive.
• YouTube
• Events
• Continue the magazine at all costs. It is the source of inspiration for many of all ages.
• Free physical and virtual spaces for learning and creation for all.
• STEAM focused. Especially for school aged children
• micro circuts
• accessible workshops and online materials
• free as in beer
• Community. I don't know how to foster that and not make it all about the money. It's hard because people make cool things and they want to get paid but "community" and "ceaseless self promotion " do not go well together
• Picking some project, and building it as a group with looking at the different elements of engineering, social science and acceptance, and presenting it to a different audience.
• Electrical engineering
• Diversity, equity, and inclusion of varied experience, culture, ideas, and methods.
• Right to repair to build more awareness around making
• Daily online content, but I think going diverse is safer
• I think I would like to focus in providing opportunities for makers that want to teach to teach, for example, I would love to teach programming for free, but havent found the space to do so
• community
• Community. Hands-down. There are many ways to address "Community" but it's the one thing I would pick over other characteristics like "Profit", "Longevity" or "Infrastructure" with respect to an open source maker-oriented organization
• Keep it small, nimble. Cater to the creativity of children, and keep it family friendly.
• Being not for profit.
• Providing access to the tools, skills and mindsets behind making to diverse communities.
• Wow, is that possible? :). I guess Arduino since you can do so many things with it.
• Let neither startup hype/pitch competition people nor social justice/identity politics people grab control over the space.
• Education and accessible technology for all
• Education
• Maker faire
• Community-organized events like Maker Faire I think are the one thing that allowed Maker Media to stand out
• critical approaches to design
• It is hard to pick one answer. I think there are several compelling opportunities for maker organizations focused on specific domains. One would be presenting maker skills in the context of a path to the trades. Another focus would be modernizing (and miniaturizing) common manufacturing processes outside the usual footprint of CNC technologies. I also believe there are a lot of opportunities for makers in agriculture and primary productivity - this is my own personal focus right now.
• Decentralization
• Whimsy. Maker businesses are fine, but there's nothing like the exhibits that elicit pure joy, which are made just because they can be made.
• Access to affordable maker spaces.
• Electronics DIY
• Regional events! Maker Faire Detroit has been so important for connecting makers in the midwest to each other and the rest of the country.
• Community building
• Events -- getting Makers together to talk, teach/share skills, show off their stuff.
• Creaste short videos that detect an issue in a community that could be somehow solved making some artifact, explain the creation process and show the impact it made.
• Physical computing
• Creating user controlled and built technological devices.
• Sustainability!! Many people are already afraid of the future, without knowing what they can do to improve matters. Be a beacon of hope. But also, as things move forward, there will be a lot of demand for this type of solutions. Renewable energy, repurposing/upcycling, interesting ways to produce food, and more. • social capacity building
Lastly, here are responses to the question "Any other thoughts or ideas?" (I've edited out some people's private contact information here, other than that these are the raw responses). Which ones resonate with you?
• the main ideas should realy come from the third world....they are way much more advance
• happy to get involved in helping build this - just let me know :) @c------- / [email protected]
• b-- here. I think the zine, + on demand + downloadable format would be great. Riso !!!
• Thanks Garnet!
• Maybe a how to magazine of critical and speculative design projects?
• well... another metaphor for cats is academia, or herding cats. other • For the organisation to be a meeting space for other locally focused groups not necessarily attached to making to encourage cross fertilisation of ideas.
• "Makers" are people, and community is people -- and we should eschew the platforming tendencies by single individuals, be it TechShop, Fab Lab, Maker Media, P2P, ecology ...
• And as I said earlier, together with m------:
"Shared Machine Shops are not new
Fab Labs are not about technology.
Sharing is not happening. Hackerspaces are not open. Technology is not neutral. Hackerspaces are not solving problems. Fab Labs are not the seeds of a revolution." (http://peerproduction.net/iss…/issue-5-shared-machine-shops/) P---- T------, [email protected]
• Great thoughts and ideas on Nettime. Keep up the good work! Hope to see you again IRL some time. J----
• No DARPA grants
• Open source is a strange thing to focus on. There are many maker companies that eschew open source, and many that require retention of copyright, etc. I wonder why you chose this phrasing.
• Be political neutral, don't force political opinions on people like the left wing Make magazine did.
• I am not sure I am right. This is just my gut reaction.
• Being a “maker” is a way of living based that we can hack everything for better :) we can be better, we have to.
• The maker movement is more alive and latent than ever.
• A post Maker Media organization should imho be membership-based, with membership revenue being the basis of what is possible financially. It would be a kind of global trade organization for makers of all kinds.
• HACK OTHER EVENTS: Attend events that attract makers who don't identify as makers: comicon (almost everyone is a maker there), wood and metalworking trade shows, custom car and bike shows, etc. We grow our community by joining other communities and infecting them with our enthusiasm for blending the disciplines into one big community of makers.
• I think building an alliance or consortium that brings together various organizations and individual is much better idea. The group could consist of organizations who's business is cater to maker community (open hardware companies, open source companies).
• I think the problem you're always going to run into is an issue of that the maker community has always struggled a bit with the idea of business as a part of the movement. At its core, the movement is a hobby to most people, so the vast majority of maker organizations have to or prefer to rely on outside sources of support because if you try to fund a makerspace internally and make business an integral part of it, it just becomes another factory workshop. I don't think it works if the organization funding it is the same one as the organization trying to coordinate the non-profit programs.
• Kinda like a national science faire but more maker oriented.
• S----- H--- is severely underrated and print is dead.
• MF, by it's very nature sort of made it hard for individuals to show stuff because it was just too exhausting. I would like to see a better way to do show and tell among individuals.
• this really sucks!!!!
• We don't need so much focus on Bay Area-type artists. We need to teach people, and especially kids, how to get started for themselves, and then help them develop skills.
• Support the independent makers. They are the "talent".
• For years heard many smaller maker companies lamenting that it was too expensive to participate in a maker Faire. It was a of once a maker made the leap from maker to a maker business Make Media wanted large sums of money to have a booth/representation at an event. This amount was unproportionally large compared to the revenue the business generated. And it all makes sense why the prices were so high when there were venture capitalists that needed to see returns. Treat it the new "Make" as a company of one, then it'll succeed long term. https://ofone.co/ (no, not affiliated with the book in any way)
• Makers are strongly connected to the UN SDG's - find ways to mutual development.
• Co-create strong independent networks, portals, platforms to survive autonomy in times of crises: Signal, Protonmail, etc
• Developing of the next generation of Makers should be something that should span more than just print and digital media. Deeper integration into schools, K12 and Collegiate, to help develop the skills needed to live and work in an Internet connected, coded world.
• do not try to be too big
• I've taken the time to carve out more space in my life to make things now that Make is gone. It felt like they had a handle on the whole making things deal. And that level of fit and finish isn't really my style. I feel like I have more space to just be me and do what I want. I know this is all in my head. I really want the books to continue under a similar imprint. It'd be a shame if they were all discontinued or sold to some soulless corporation.
• More drones!
• Women are makers, and “women’s crafts” are forms of making. People living in poverty are makers, and survival invention in developing nations is a form of making. Learn from Bauhaus’s eff-ups a century ago. Learn from innovation in literal ghettos and tenements.
• "making" is too broad to go mainstream. Folks that grok makerfaire dig it hard, yet folks that don't have no clue what the hell it is. We have a big awareness problem still. Rally around right to repair and teaching folks how to fix stuff so they start taking more stuff apart and questioning how it works.
• If I had the means to start I'd do it myself
• I am sorry to waste your time
• usually monetery and community focussed efforts conflict. it would be great if this was not the case
• Occasional events are better for outreach whereas regular meetups are better for cultivating a specialism
• Consider expanding the Maker Media empire, or whatever is left of it, to the Eastern Hemisphere/East -- India and China are the future, and if Make: had some of its outposts in these economies, radical change could be seen with respect to the global maker movement
• Nothing good lasts forever. Design the business accordingly.
• I attended probably 75% of the NYC MFs, including 2010. I believe the year things changed for the worse was when Barnes&Noble got involved, makers started complaining about the cost to exhibit, and weird unrelated large sponsors showed up (some kind of new soda). The reprap festivals might be a better way to go?
• I think it makes sense at this point to look at how we can form a network of small groups in many places working together towards a common mission with the support of a board providing guidance.
• How, and with whom, can I accomplish this in Reutlingen, Willi Betz Gelände?
• I know people are super sad about MAKE. Me too. It's very nostalgic considering all the friends and community we have made all around the world. But I feel, this is just the passing of an industry from the early stage to a mature stage. This is very similar to all the open source hardware grassroots clubs we had such as the famous Homebrew Club, but today people hardly build computers by hand anymore. We have "matured" into another level of technology.
• It's a cycle. What starts young, will one day become matured and even die off to give birth to something else totally new, while the remnants of the old will get embedded as part of bigger and more financially stable organisations.
• connect up all loal hackerspaces in a city and have them run an event in a conglomeration.
• One thing I feel is lacking in the usual maker pedagogy is fundamental business literacy. People can develop amazing skills through self-study, but business law is arcane by design.
• I think most makers stand to benefit greatly from some content demystifying business licensing, home accounting and independent consultancy work. There are already many organizations promoting independent business, but there seems to be little overlap between these and the maker community.
• The maker faire is a decentralized thing. Most of regional and mini maker faires are on. Perhaps instead of maker Media licenses we could just use a respected and recognized chapter, a document stating what is a maker faire and what is not. If the maker faire trademark will not be available for us, then we will have to think up and to agree on a new name.
• We can do better than Maker Faire.
• If there is a open source franchise model then each location could have a contributed fee that would assist with purchasing of new equipment, insurance, repairs, staffing etc. • It is a lower-cost way of sharing resources instead of having to rely solely on local volunteers or individual sites.
• Half focus on newcomers and other half in veterans. A lot of us started with Arduino, and some made custom PCB, wich is kinda normal.
• Not for profit please :D
• Get youtubers involved, like Simone Giertz, Laura Kampf, Mark Rober,
• Be an actual maker movement, about DIY and tech learning and FUN!, and not a profit-focused startup company. Be genuinely excited about making, not fake excited about selling us marked up crap. Get into the deep dive details.
• Be more like the 8/16 bit computer user group days, the Radio and Electronics days, the glee of building and fixing and modding shit. Be photocopied zine days and not glossy magazine days. More crazy tinkerers, less TED talk. Don't be a fucking TED talk. Never be that again.
• Scrappy and inclusive, not hipster and exclusive. Geezers and kids and adults and teens all treated with respect.
• For god's sake, the project is the star! Fuck "influencers". Nobody is a fucking star of makerdom.
• Engineering is modest, good hacks get kudos. No hate for n00bs. Everybody can come. You can do the thing!
• Make did an amazing job of combining different disciplines into one community. I'd love to see that again.
• stress anti-capitalist and regenerative capitalist models
If you'd like to input ideas, here's the form -
https://forms.gle/SB7FxpJVAyhVwnLp7
- and in reference to Nettime, I'm particularly interested in hearing people (by email) that might be interested in hosting some sort of events that have to do with DIY/art/tech/culture, sort of in the spirit of a revived Dorkbot - please give me a shout.
Thanks! Garnet
