hi! im applying to college soon and ive always wanted to do human sciences, but recently ive switched one of my subjects to CS and decided i want to do something more objective and math-y. i think having a degree related to computers will give me more time to think about the field i want to work in. this decision was a bit impulsive and tbh you played a big role in sparking my interest and making computing seem accessible. in general i feel like ive always been interested in it (my dad knows a lot), but ive just never considered it a real opportunity that i would ever be able to do. Rn i feel like all cis guys built their own computers since they were 11 and would have an advantage over me (in this country unis require you to show personal engagement and skill relating to the course you apply for). i wonder if you have any opinions on whether its even worth to do computer-related stuff in uni if i dont have any real knowledge about it besides "useful in life", how poorly will i be treated in the field as a trans guy, and if you have some suggestions on the topics and materials i can study to improve my knowledge
honestly even if you dont go fully into CS just having a course or two will help you get started in doing really useful things in whatever direction you end up going. the amount of times i hear someone becoming crazy useful just because they know some basic scripting or something is amazing.
i put my own computer together in highschool and beyond know what parts are in a pc and how to install an operating system it didnt really help at all in uni. if you have time and the interest look into maybe doing a basic programming course or a bridging course. having a few basic projects to show youre interested and willing to work on it looks really good to applications i imagine(schools here are just entrance on grades so I dont for sure but ive heard good things)
honestly uni is most just exploring stuff to help you figure out what you vibe with enough to peruse, its really common to change degrees part way through cause locking into a field of study in your teens is just not fun
as for the cis dude dominance yeah i got nothing, i know plenty of not cis guys doing well and some putting up with bs for it. if you enjoy the field then do it, going to be putting up with shitty people regardless so might as well do something you enjoy/are interested in.
ive been out of the loop on what are good starting resources but honestly finding an intro course/tutorial on C or python seems like a good way to get a taste for it. hopefully others can add some recommendations

@girderednerve replied to your post coming out on tumblr as someone whose taught "AI bootcamp" courses to middle school students AMA:
did they like it? what kinds of durable skills did you want them to walk away with? do you feel bullish on "AI"?
It was an extracurricular thing so the students were quite self-selecting and all were already interested in the topic or in doing well in the class. Probably what most interested me about the demographic of students taking the courses (they were online) was the number who were international students outside of the imperial core probably eventually looking to go abroad for college, like watching/participating in the cogs of brain drain.
I'm sure my perspective is influenced because my background is in statistics and not computer science. But I hope that they walked away with a greater understanding and familiarity with data and basic statistical concepts. Things like sample bias, types of data (categorical/quantitative/qualitative), correlation (and correlation not being causation), ways to plot and examine data. Lots of students weren't familiar before we started the course with like, what a csv file is/tabular data in general. I also tried to really emphasize that data doesn't appear in a vacuum and might not represent an "absolute truth" about the world and there are many many ways that data can become biased especially when its on topics where people's existing demographic biases are already influencing reality.
Maybe a bit tangential but there was a part of the course material that was teaching logistic regression using the example of lead pipes in flint, like, can you believe the water in this town was undrinkable until it got Fixed using the power of AI to Predict Where The Lead Pipes Would Be? it was definitely a trip to ask my students if they'd heard of the flint water crisis and none of them had. also obviously it was a trip for the course material to present the flint water crisis as something that got "fixed by AI". added in extra information for my students like, by the way this is actually still happening and was a major protest event especially due to the socioeconomic and racial demographics of flint.
Aside from that, python is a really useful general programming language so if any of the students go on to do any more CS stuff which is probably a decent chunk of them I'd hope that their coding problemsolving skills and familiarity with it would be improved.
do i feel bullish on "AI"? broad question. . . once again remember my disclaimer bias statement on how i have a stats degree but i definitely came away from after teaching classes on it feeling that a lot of machine learning is like if you repackaged statistics and replaced the theoretical/scientific aspects where you confirm that a certain model is appropriate for the data and test to see if it meets your assumptions with computational power via mass guessing and seeing if your mass guessing was accurate or not lol. as i mentioned in my tags i also really don't think things like linear regression which were getting taught as "AI" should be considered "ML" or "AI" anyways, but the larger issue there is that "AI" is a buzzy catchword that can really mean anything. i definitely think relatedly that there will be a bit of an AI bubble in that people are randomly applying AI to tasks that have no business getting done that way and they will eventually reap the pointlessness of these projects.
besides that though, i'm pretty frustrated with a lot of AI hysteria which assumes that anything that is labeled as "AI" must be evil/useless/bad and also which lacks any actual labor-based understanding of the evils of capitalism. . . like AI (as badly formed as I feel the term is) isn't just people writing chatGPT essays or whatever, it's also used for i.e. lots of cutting edge medical research. if insanely we are going to include "linear regression" as an AI thing that's probably half of social science research too. i occasionally use copilot or an LLM for my work which is in public health data affiliated with a university. last week i got driven batty by a post that was like conspiratorially speculating "spotify must have used AI for wrapped this year and thats why its so bad and also why it took a second longer to load, that was the ai generating everything behind the scenes." im saying this as someone who doesnt use spotify, 1) the ship on spotify using algorithms sailed like a decade ago, how do you think your weekly mixes are made? 2) like truly what is the alternative did you think that previously a guy from minnesota was doing your spotify wrapped for you ahead of time by hand like a fucking christmas elf and loading it personally into your account the night before so it would be ready for you? of course it did turned out that spotify had major layoffs so i think the culprit here is really understaffing.
like not to say that AI like can't have a deleterious effect on workers, like i literally know people who were fired through the logic that AI could be used to obviate their jobs. which usually turned out not to be true, but hasn't the goal of stretching more productivity from a single worker whether its effective or not been a central axiom of the capitalist project this whole time? i just don't think that this is spiritually different from retail ceos discovering that they could chronically understaff all of their stores.

DES303: Week 4a - Tech Demo Reflection
In this blog, I will reflect on my time in the class's tech demo using the Gibb framework as a guide, unpacking in 5 and 1/2 stages. Description, Feelings, Evaluation, Analysis, Conclusion and Action Plan. Here will be my thoughts on the week on what went down.
Description During my tech demo presentation, I briefly discussed everything that was from week 2 to week 3, and how I developed my brainstormed ideas and related them to local issues in the 2020s. Topics referred to were the introduction of generative AI into the creative industry and how it could possibly affect creatives, or if this technology is disruptive and could put certain jobs at risk.
The main argument I was presenting was that artists who earn a living creating original artwork could be impacted by the negative side effects of AI art. With my slides, I was forthright about the range of my skills and the depth of my knowledge as a student, giving them a glimpse of what I am interested in and why. The content includes samples of art drawn by me in Procreate and art manipulated in Photoshop, all showcasing how a cycle of art could be created in the world of concept art. A manifesto was created for the last slide to summarise the overall message and its themes.

Feelings Overall, I felt this tech demo could have been a little better, as I felt the slides were a little unfocused on a specific area I wanted to explore. Structurally, my presentation lacked a narrow angle, and that led to some group members being either unable to follow or disinterested in my content. As I was presenting the written material verbally, I had many difficulties trying to get across what I was trying to convey and was not very successful at it.
By the feedback of what my group members had to say, the overall response was that it was interesting sometimes but I had to work on my presentation abilities. Speaking to crowds had never been easy, even on good days. From my perspective, this part was always been an obstacle, which is the ever-ominous pervading demand of having to speak to an audience that I find challenging at all times. In truth, this obstacle would always confront me no matter where and I appreciate this was pointed out early during the course.

Evaluation Other than the area of my verbal communication being highlighted as in need of improvement, the final product was fine for the most part. The part that I needed to develop more was showing the details of the craft. I believe if I were to assess how well I performed, I may have gone a little off track and focused on theory and research rather than demonstrating what my skills are.
In my feedback, there were some comments suggesting it would have been a better demonstration if I opened up my Procreate or Photoshop and showed them how all of the making behind the scenes worked for my final product. For example, with Procreate, some members wanted to know the specific techniques I used to create my textures for the characters I've drawn, which was selecting the right brush and smudging the shading until the blend was just right.

Analysis The second conundrum in the room that may cause a strain later down the line is that I am not a computer scientist, nor do I have a background in computer science. As mentioned before, I am not a highly qualified expert in either programming or art - my position would always be from the view of a Designer. This precludes that I cannot provide an insightful analysis of the inner components of how AI algorithms work, such as the data being trained on and who gets to keep the data. An acknowledgement of my position would be apt for the next phase of this project, being transparent with the audience about my skillsets. Since I could never manifest something as competent as a COMPSCI student, I must know my scope and how to enact it as a designer.
Conclusion & Action Plan In summary, my demo had mixed reviews with underlying gaps in my delivery and my understanding of the topics I was presenting. What was not accounted for was that everyone in the group had varying ranges of background knowledge in diverging disciplines as Designers, while I spoke as though I assumed they knew on the same level as me [which is in graphic design specifically]. What this session has enlightened me is the priority to be a more effective communicator in my engagement, not by WHAT I present but HOW I do it. If I may confess, there are moments I feel the need to create something profound for a high achievement or to prove myself, so scaling back and focusing on the essential rubric helps.
The plan for the next stage is to dedicate more time to proofreading my work and getting more feedback from my tutors and peers to ensure I am on course. The aim and lesson taught here was to not go so far out of my way to be groundbreaking or revolutionary but to synthesize existing creations into an original piece of work. The next set of actions is researching, ideating, and iterating with fruitful feedback in between the sessions. I would need to remember that everything that works has been designed, and chances are, there are existing sample projects that could help me gain more insight.
