Hoping to try something new and earn a bit of money on the side, you join an app that lets people hire you for your dating services. The idea is pretty straightforward — you pose as the client's girlfriend for a brief period of time, and in turn, you receive payment. But you didn't foresee everyone getting so attached to you, and suddenly, they're no longer satisfied with a fabricated relationship.

“...you can do what now?”

“Hire someone to date you,” your friend, Ava, repeats. She chuckles and waves you off dismissively. “Come on, [Name]. It’s the modern age. People are always coming up with new things these days. I’m willing to bet there’s an app or website out there for practically anything.”

You blink in disbelief. Granted, there is all kinds of crazy shit going on in the world, and you’ve heard of companionship services before—like escorts or sugar baby arrangements—but to hear that something like this is trending nowadays is still undeniably a shock.

“Here, look,” Ava gestures, pulling out her phone. “I was curious, so I downloaded the app the other day just to check out.”

“Uh, don’t you already have a boyfriend?”

“He knows I was just browsing. I showed him too, and we scrolled through some stuff together. A lot of the profiles on here are wild,” she laughs. “It’s crazy what people advertise they’re willing to do. Get a load of this guy. He says he’s down to meet your family and make a total ass out of himself just so that he lowers your parents’ standards and the next real boyfriend you get will look way better by comparison.”

“Fucking hell,” you mutter. “I can’t tell if this is actually real, or just some new meme template.”

“Of course it’s real! I think you’re underestimating how lonely people these days are. There’s definitely a lot of money to be made in this industry. Just look at how much people are willing to blow on their favorite streamer, even though they’ve never met them a day in their life. Dating’s gotten a lot more complicated lately, so I guess some people just want to skip past the troublesome parts and experience what it’s like to be with someone.”

You furrow your brows. The whole thing sounds incredibly sad when you think of it that way. People would rather pay for a fabricated relationship than put in the time and effort towards building something real? Loneliness is starting to sound like an actual epidemic nowadays.

“Well, I guess I shouldn’t judge people without understanding where they’re coming from,” you acknowledge. “It’s not like I know what they’ve been through. Times are changing and all. It sounds like this is actually starting to become pretty mainstream.”

Ava nods chipperly. “Yep! I mean, I love my boyfriend, so I’m definitely not the target audience, but maybe it’s what some people need to gain a little boost of confidence and get back into the dating scene. I doubt everyone uses it in a romantic sense too. There are people out there that just want a bit of company every now and then. Isn’t it nice that they have someone to spend time with this way?”

“Yeah… I guess that’s true.”

Honestly, you’re still struggling to fully wrap your head around this. You understand the premise well enough, but you can’t really get past the part about accepting payment just to provide someone with a fabricated experience. Then again, you suppose that’s the case for most things nowadays. People are willing to spend the brunt of their earnings on in-game purchases for video games and other things that aren’t tangible in the real world, because even though they aren’t necessarily organic, it still provides them with some satisfaction.

Long story short, it’s not up to you to decide what does or doesn’t make someone else happy, and you suppose as long as it’s executed in a professional manner, there’s nothing wrong with meeting new people this way.

“Hey, I’ve got a great idea,” Ava suddenly perks up. “You should join this app! You’re super pretty, smart, and nice. I bet you’d have loads of guys lining up to hire you as their girlfriend!”

“Me?” You blink repeatedly, shuffling backwards the closer she leans in. “I mean, I just don’t think I’m the right person for the job. If it makes people happy, then I support it, but deep down, I worry I’d feel like I’m exploiting someone’s feelings just for a few extra bucks. Morally speaking, I’m not so sure I like the idea…”

“It’s not exploitation,” she insists. “People know what they’re signing up for. At the end of the day, it’s a buyer-seller relationship. Someone pays for the service being advertised, and they receive it. As long as you’re not ambiguous about what you’re willing to do for the amount that you’re charging, people know what to expect. Of course, I’m sure there might be the occasional asshole here and there, but if they do anything inappropriate or violate the terms, you can report them through the app and they’ll be banned from using it.”

You’re not quite sure how to respond to that. Some extra money would be nice. You’re a university student with all sorts of loans, so it’s not like you’ve got excess cash lying around. And it’s also true that you’ve been looking to apply for a new job lately, since your old manager was a total ass and you ended up quitting.

Still. A girlfriend-for-hire? Someone like you? It’s just really difficult to imagine.

“I actually think it’d be a good experience,” Ava goes on. “You’ve never really put yourself out there before. I know everyone dates at their own pace and stuff, but you shouldn’t have to be afraid. Who knows? Maybe you’ll meet some cool people and want to date them for real. And even if you don’t end up going for them, you still make some money, so either way, you’ve got nothing to lose.”

You chuckle weakly. “Yeah, I just don’t know. I feel like I’m better suited for traditional jobs. But thanks for the vote of confidence. I’m glad you think people would actually be willing to pay to date me.”

“Girl, you seriously need to believe in yourself more,” Ava sighs. “I’m telling you, you’re a catch. But at the end of the day, it’s your call. You shouldn’t force yourself into anything if you feel uncomfortable.”

You smile and nod in agreement, and sensing your discomfort, Ava decides to change the topic.

But for some reason, you feel a twinge in your chest, and it’s hard to keep your mind from wandering.

Later that same day, you’re lounging on the couch, mouth agape, having just downloaded the app on your own phone.

“What the hell am I doing…?”

You tell yourself that it’s just simple curiosity. Yeah. That’s all it is. Ava piqued your interest earlier, and now you just want to scroll through in more detail to get a better sense of what kind of people use this platform.

The app is called ‘Partner For Hire’. The name isn’t particularly inspired, you have to admit, but you suppose it communicates its point rather effectively and leaves no room for ambiguity. Ultimately, this is a transactional relationship, and it’s probably for the best that clients know what to expect.

You can use the app as either a buyer or seller. Meaning that you can create your profile and advertise your services, or simply list yourself as a prospective client and what your hobbies and interests are. In that sense, it’s kind of similar to most dating apps, since you have to take a flattering photo to go along with whatever blurb you’re providing. Of course, just because you try to solicit someone’s services doesn’t mean there’s any guarantee they’ll accept. This is an app where you can run everything yourself, and of course the company takes a cut of your profits, rather than an agency that matches you with a client regardless of whether you want to accept the job or not.

There’s definitely a lot of flexibility, and you can easily choose who you want to pretend to date. If someone is interested in hiring you, they submit a request to be able to contact you, and once you accept, you can message them directly and establish the terms of the dating contract, such as the length and what particular services will be provided.

You scroll through the list of boyfriends/girlfriends being advertised on the app, and honestly, it seems like there’s a decent amount of money to be made. Of course, a lot of that comes with building a good reputation and improving your ratings and visibility so more people will want to hire you, but it actually seems like a decent amount of people are able to make a living off this sort of thing.

You bite down on your lower lip. Should you really go ahead and just do it? Like Ava said, there’s probably not much to lose. All the transactions are managed on the app, so you can easily report people who try to skip out on paying. Clients have to link their banking and personal info, so they’d be taking on a big risk by trying to scam people. You’re sure it might happen from time to time, but based on the reviews you’ve read, the company is really good at enforcing their policies and making sure everyone gets paid.

The money seems good, and it would definitely help take some pressure off your student loans, but ultimately, the biggest thing you’re struggling with is your moral compass.

People are willing to spend money for this kind of thing, and that’s entirely their choice to make, so it’s not like you’re extorting them or anything. Still… you wonder if it’s actually okay to profit off of someone else’s loneliness. You’ve never worked the kind of job that requires you to cater directly to another person’s emotions, and it kind of freaks you out.

But maybe Ava is right. There are all sorts of people in this world. Maybe some of them are just curious to try the app out. Maybe others just want to get their families off their back by pretending like they’re dating someone for a little while. There’s no way to discern everyone’s motivations, so perhaps there’s really no point in thinking about it at all.

Most importantly, this could be a good thing for you. Life has been stagnant recently, and it’s true that you usually hesitate to put yourself out there. You’ll never learn what you do or don’t like if you keep on avoiding everything. This could be a chance to learn a lot about other people, but also, to learn more about yourself.

Yeah. It’s time to stop overthinking for a change and just try something new.

Thus, feeling unusually determined, you spend the rest of the day setting up your profile (finding nice selfies was the longest part of the whole ordeal), and with a resolved huff, you post it and officially go live on the app.

You’re not really sure what you were expecting, but needless to say, there isn’t any immediate feedback. It probably takes a while for people to stumble across your profile, and even then, there’s no guarantee they’ll want to go out with you.

I guess I was getting worked up for no reason. Certain people might find success with this kind of thing, but it’s probably not as easy as it looks.

You scratch your cheek, suddenly sheepish over how needlessly excited you got earlier. You’re not used to stepping out of your comfort zone, so you must have gotten a bit carried away.

For the rest of the evening, you set your phone aside and come back to reality. You get some homework done, make dinner, and by the time you’re ready for bed, you’ve pretty much forgotten about the whole thing altogether.

That is, until you check and see that you’ve missed a notification.

“Huh? Someone viewed my profile and wants to message me?”

You’re undeniably taken aback. Not just because it’s happening a lot sooner than you expected, but also because it means that contrary to what you first thought, people are interested in you.

Having minimal experience when it comes to dating and romance in general, you have to admit, the thought of being viewed as desirable is immensely flattering.

Curious to see who wants to hire your services, you click on the user’s profile.

His name is Isaac, and he’s twenty-one years old, set to complete his undergraduate studies at the end of the year. He goes to a different university than yours, thankfully, because you can’t help but feel like it would be incredibly awkward to bump into him on campus after pretending to be his girlfriend. He’s studying to become a doctor, which means he’s still got a lot of school ahead of him, but you’ve always had a lot of admiration for people who are willing to commit to their goals and work hard.

Also, even though you don’t want to sound shallow or anything… he’s really, really attractive.

You frown. Granted, there’s more to a person than their appearance, but based on how he comes across in his profile and what his future career is, he doesn’t strike you as the type of person who would struggle to date someone.

But again, you can never know what’s going on in a stranger’s life. And there’s no real way to find out why he decided to join the app.

Apart from speaking to him directly, of course.

After a momentary delay, the screen loads into a messaging interface, allowing you to see what Isaac sent you and respond to him directly.

You stare at the messages without blinking, just taking it all in. So, there really are people like him out there, who use these apps for reasons other than seeking companionship. It sounds like he’s not too interested in dating for real, but his parents are putting a lot of pressure on him, so he just wants an escape. Honestly, you can’t blame him for it. Your parents were overbearing for the better portion of your life—even now, as an adult—so you can understand just how suffocating it gets at times.

All of a sudden, you don’t feel too bad about accepting the job. It doesn’t feel like exploitation in the slightest. In fact, you’d be helping someone resolve a frustration situation, while getting paid in the process. It actually sounds like it could be rather fulfilling.

More importantly, you decided to be more confident and try something new. You refuse to back out now.

[𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐞]:

You’re admittedly a bit nervous, especially since you want to do a good job and avoid letting him down, but mostly, you’re feeling excited. All of this is uncharted territory for you, after all. Never in a million years would you have imagined taking on a job like this.

And you really shouldn’t have.

You don’t know it yet, but this will be the cause of many, many regrets.

Shit. I’m starting to have second thoughts.

Even now, you still can’t believe you’re really going through with this. After talking to Isaac and ironing out the finer details, you agreed to join him for a family gathering and pose as his girlfriend. You expected for him to have quite a few requests, but luckily, he seems pretty laid back about the whole thing. The better portion of your conversation was spent on getting your stories straight so as not to incur any suspicion, and since you’ve always been a good student and a hard worker, you promptly memorized everything there was to know.

And now, it’s finally time to put this plan in motion.

“Hey,” Isaac greets. “[Name], right?”

It’s the evening, since his parents are hosting a dinner party. The event is supposed to be pretty casual, but you still dressed up semi-formal in the hopes of making a good impression. He never explicitly mentioned how strict his parents are, but since they’ve been on his case about getting a girlfriend, it never hurts to go the extra mile.

"Hi, Isaac,” you smile. “It’s so nice to meet you.”

“You, too,” he nods. He’s considerably taller than you, and every bit as handsome as his picture suggested. Unless his personality is god-awful (which you probably would’ve picked up on after messaging him for so long), you’ve got a good feeling that most girls would be interested in him.

Still, everyone is different. He might have really high standards, or maybe he wants to focus on his studies, or perhaps it’s just a case of having never met the right person. Whatever the reason may be, his parents shouldn’t be pressuring him to date someone, and if you have the means to help him out, you’ll happily do it.

“You look really nice,” Isaac says. He tilts his head to the side. “I hope you didn’t feel like you had to dress up to impress anyone. The most important part is that they believe I’m seeing someone so that they finally ease up a bit.”

“Oh, I just did this for my own peace of mind,” you reassure. “I made sure to memorize everything you told me in advance, so I’m confident I can convince them that we’re the real deal. Even though this is technically my first day on the job… I promise not to let you down.”

You blush, feeling rather flustered. The idea of being someone’s hired girlfriend is still a lot to wrap your head around, and you certainly don’t want to make empty promises, but you have every intention of giving it your best shot. Isaac is in a stressful situation, and you’re resolved to do whatever you can to fix it.

“Can’t wait to get this over with,” Isaac sighs. He opens the passenger door and gestures for you to step inside the car. “Don’t worry. I know you might be feeling a bit uneasy, but I promise I’m not a serial killer or anything like that. I won’t hold it against you if you have 911 ready on speed dial until we get to my parents’ house.”

“I trust you,” you insist. “I’ve heard good things about this app, and it sounds like they take safety seriously. They’ve got your information in their system, after all. Plus, I can tell that you’re a nice guy. It’s just a gut feeling.”

“I appreciate it,” he smiles. “Anyways… I guess I’ve stalled for long enough. You can probably tell that I really don’t feel like going. But the sooner I get them off my back, the better.”

“I’ll be the best girlfriend you can ask for,” you beam.

It’s a promise to him, but also to yourself. You are committed to taking this new job seriously, and for the rest of the evening, you will do whatever it takes to blend into the role that’s been thrust upon you. There’s no reason to get worked up. At the end of the day, all of this is pretend. It won’t be anywhere near as complicated as a real relationship.

Who do you think is the most popular dorm leader amongst their students. Like Leona's obviously kind of a dick but people love him and respect him, while Riddle is more controversial amongst the students. Like rank them based on popularity if you'd be so kind!

I think it really depends??? Like, it's obviously very different within a dorm versus outside of it. Then there's also the question of passion and how far the students that admire said dorm leader will go for them. For example, Diasomnia students are incredibly passionate and form literal angry mobs to defend Malleus's honor; this cannot be said for most of the other dorms. However, the love and admiration for Malleus stretches thin outside of his own dormitory.

Instead of ranking them overall, I think I would instead categorize them like this (note: Yuu is excluded because Ramshackle has fallen from its status as a dorm):

Popular, few to no strings attached:

Kalim is popular both in his dorm and outside of it. He is one of the few cheerful and friendly students on campus and is shown to be well-liked in Scarabia for his empathy and willingness to accept others as they are. Kalim is also generous, throwing parties that include guests from other dorms and often trying to buy expensive gifts like diamonds for his dorm members (until he is stopped by others). His naivety also means he’s easily fooled and taken advantage of, which… sounds like a bad thing, but would be seen as a positive by some of the less savory characters at NRC.

Vil is generally liked and respected. Pre-book 5 Epel is an exception to this. However, students from other dorms, particularly Savanaclaw, sometimes mock Vil and underestimate him until he proves himself to them (for example, in Beans Fest). In both cases, his doubters change their minds and come around to him one way or another. I'd also imagine that Vil being a celebrity and all gives him a HUGE boost in appeal among the general student body.

Popular-ish, terms and conditions apply:

Leona is decently popular, especially among first years, his club, and within his own dormitory. He tends to attract younger students seeking a cool and dependable older brother or mentor figure. Most others—especially in his own grade level—have beef with Leona and/or take issue with his attitude, which is fair and valid.

Known but… infamous:

Riddle seems to be seen in a relatively neutral light by most students. Some admire him for his diligence but more often than not, he’s deemed annoying or unreasonable for enforcing the rules, especially Heartslabyul’s ridiculous ones. His penchant for blowing up at people and being anal about adhering to rules in a very literal and absolutist way probably does not earn him brownie points.

Azul is technically well-known but not necessarily adored. The twins go around advertising his services and luring in potential clients. If you need something, you know he can help you out… for the right price. Azul also has notoriety thanks to running the Mostro Lounge. I don't think people like him very much though, considering that mob students complain about how he’s a scumbag, fellow dorm leaders like Vil express an inherent distrust of him, and Azul himself has zero qualms about using dirty tactics like blackmail to get his own dorm members under his thumb. It feels like people are polite to him out of obligation and fear or what would happen if they aren’t. So in a weird way, Azul is liked for what he can provide people, but isn’t genuinely liked as an individual.

Malleus is playing a game of emotional extremes. While he has fervent, die-hard Draconians like Sebek backing him, the majority of the NRC population holds the opposite opinion and is deathly afraid of him. If he so much as smiles at a mob student or attempts to approach them, most would scream and/or run away. There are certainly exceptions (Kalim, Rook, Yuu, etc.), but they’re in the minority. He’s hovering near the bottom, if only because of the overwhelming terror his name evokes, even if the Draconians attempt to balance it out. Their pushes to make others recognize the glory of their dorm leader only serves to further exacerbate existing tensions.

Not known and/or not popular:

Idia, well… Does bro touch grass and see the light of day enough to even be known by most of the students??? The students we do see Idia interact with tend to either ignore him (partly because he lurks in corners, away from people) or think of him as unpleasant to deal with. It’s hard for him to socialize, and when he does sometimes his Gamer ego gets the better of him and he mouths off an insult that catches him heat. Idia may get some street cred in his own dorm for his skills, but this largely doesn’t extend beyond Ignihyde. I wouldn’t even know if it would be right to say that the other Ignihyde students like Idia; everyone just stays in their own rooms way too much for me to properly gauge their relationship and so I’m left to take the opinions of the larger student body into account.

Additionally, after setting a character as the one you wish to level up:

a. Enemies related to the corresponding character's "Character and Weapon Enhancement Materials" will be pinned and marked in the "Enemies" interface of the Adventurer Handbook.

b. When available, Domains related to the corresponding character's "Character Talent Materials" or "Weapon Ascension Materials" will be pinned in the "Domain" interface of the Adventurer Handbook.

c. Materials related to the corresponding character will be marked in certain interfaces in the "Map" that display material drops (such as Domain details interface, local specialty tracking interface, etc.).

d. If you don't have enough materials to meet the level-up goals, the amount of materials needed to achieve level-up goals and the goals' completion status will be displayed on the item info pop-up when collecting materials.

● Enhancement Systems

Clicking on "Craftable Amount" in the "Source" section of the details for some enhancement materials will now redirect you to the map and highlight the "Crafting Bench" icon.

The Battle Pass system's "This BP Period" has been updated to include cross-version tracking for Spiral Abyss task progress: When the Battle Pass is available after a version update, for the "Spiral Abyss" in the same version update, if there are any Abyssal Stars that were not recorded by the previous version's BP Missions, their progress will now be added to the current mission "Gain a total of 12 stars in the Spiral Abyss."

Anyways here’s a long thingy about character motivations and how it influences actions and the epiphany. It’s been sitting in my drafts for months because I have no idea how to conclude it satisfyingly so here you go.

I yapped a lot in this post but basically Monika’s actions were in my eyes driven by the fact that 1. Nothing in her reality matters 2. You are the only thing that does exist and can matter, and 3. She wants more than anything to have value in life and to have a connection with someone real, and if she has no value she’s better off dead.

While base game is in caused by external factors like the epiphany, it’s also caused a lot by Monika’s own character traits that get turned into flaws when applied here. A lot of the things that drive her to do what she did was already there in the side stories. It’s one of those tragedies driven by character traits that in any other plot would have been inconsequential. Monika’s perfectionism and need to feel of value lead to her abandoning everything when her world couldn’t provide those things, seeking out you because as the only real person you are the only person she can be of service to meaningfully.

It makes me think about the rest of the club and how their big character motivations would influence them. To sum up my own ideas:

Monika is drive by a need to be useful. She may seem to be the perfect golden child who has everything she could ever want, but deep down she feels the need to prove herself for these things. She needs to be perfect, to be the best for others. Whether it be her role as club leader, model student, model citizen, or good friend, she focused on doing the best she can and proving her worth. She can’t put her own responsibilities onto others, it’s her own burden that she needs to carry for others. She knows her existence takes up thousands of resources at the cost of thousands of people, and with how privileged she knows she is, she wants to pay it back somehow, even if she knows it’s impossible. She can’t let anyone down, especially herself, she needs to prove that she’s deserving of all the things she has. She doesn’t want to be a burden to others. If she can’t pay back all the things she’s gotten from other, she’d be better off dead

Sayori is driven by the desire to make everyone happy. She says so herself so it’s pretty obvious. Surroundings herself with friends, she wants nothing more than to be there for them. She’s great with interpersonal relationships and emotions shown throughout both the main game and side stories, with her being the people person to defuse fights, boost morale, lift people up, and understand people in ways they don’t even understand themselves. it’s how she shows how much she cares, it’s one of the only things she feels she’s good at. She needs to make herself worth it for her friends, but the problem is that no amount of work she does for them will make her feel less of a burden, like she doesn’t deserve her life. But she can’t tell anyone else about these thoughts, it wouldn’t help them, it wouldn’t make them happy. Her own self hatred only grows and gets worse the more she hides it, but letting it out will only prove her self hatred right. If she can’t be useful to her friends in some way, if she ends up as a burden to everyone around her, they’d all be better off if she were dead

Yuri is driven by the want to be understood. She’s lived her life being an outsider, the weird one with interests and behaviours no one understands. She struggles with expressing herself and her feelings, only really knowing how to connect with others via her niche interests, meaning she only connects to a small amount of people. People had dismissed and made assumptions about her for so long that she just accepted that she’d always be an outsider, that she’s weird and that no one would understand the true her. So she puts up a mask, caring about her image and how she’s seen, trying her best to seem mature and wise if she can’t be loved as she is, to hide her weirder interests so she doesn’t put people off. The real her would scare off others, make people think she’s weird or gross, anything people can misconstrue as bad. People push away what they can’t understand, but on some level she might have learned to agree with these judgements. Why would people put up with someone who deserved these assumptions anyways. Maybe she could hide away parts of herself to be loved, but at some point she can’t change who she is, they’ll see something in her they don’t like and they’ll hate her. They’ll misinterpret what they don’t understand, and she’ll become something lesser in their eyes. She couldn’t stand the idea of being misunderstood and othered, so maybe she could just accept being alone instead.

Natsuki is driven to find a sense of belonging. More than anything she’s scared of being alone, left behind because she couldn’t put up with the cost of relationships. Pretty much all of her behaviour in the side stories is just her trying to open up, find new friends, but also desperately cling to old ones despite how harmful they are. She doesn’t really have good relationships with anyone outside the club. Her family life is ambiguous, but she can’t exactly leave whatever is going on with her dad. Whether or not she wants to, she’d have no other home to go back to if she leaves him, so she has to endure whatever degrading there is. No matter how she may fear her father’s judgment, she can’t survive on her own. Similarly, her friends also put her down. They judge and misinterpret her for who she is, make fun of her constantly, make her feel like she’s less, and overall make her feel worse about herself. They might not realize it, but they don’t actually like her for who she is. Yet Natsuki can’t let go because what else is there for her. She can endure the judgement because the alternative would be that she’s alone and abandoned. They might not like her for her, but at least she belongs somewhere. She worries so much about leaving them because she can’t guarantee another friendship besides them, she can’t imagine another regroup that would ever accept her. She couldn’t stand being alone like that, so instead she’ll endure being misunderstood and judged if if means she isn’t left behind.

These things pretty heavily influenced how they actually both in base game and side stories. The latter is obvious, but I think the roles they play in base game are also cool. Because Monika’s role is meant to be the helpful guide tutorial npc, fit for a person who’s desperate to be useful. Sayori is the whole trope of the heart of the team holding everyone together emotionally, breaking up fights, creating the games jokes, and even being the inciting incident. With her the game is happier and cheerful, while in act 2 her loss signals the tonal shift. Yuri is the maiden of mystery, with the first act being the part where we learn about her and her interests and understand her. In act 2 her character is misconstrued as her actions and entire being is flipped and misinterpreted into something shallow and scary just as she feared she was. Natsuki is the tsundere with the first act focusing on her opening up and finding the club as a place to be accepted and belong after pushing the others away from so long. Meanwhile act 2 has her slowly pushed away from the focus as the entire club begins to ignore and neglect her (basically that one Natsuki analysis I made once). As much as I restate my points I do it because I feel like the way character motivations here inform how they behave is so interesting and cool from a meta perspective. And I also think they’re really interesting because despite their distinctions they’re also very similar and often overlap

Sayori and Monika are about making their lives valuable and mean something by supporting others. While Monika leans to the more practical perfect golden child, Sayori acts as the heart of the team and shoulder to lean on. One’s way of proving themselves is focused on their smarts and skills while the other is all about interpersonal relationships. This is why they act as club president and vice president as they act as the guides to the other members, including the player. Part of it is them selflessly wanting to pay back to the people they care about, but part of it is also the desire for them to be needed. The problem with that framework is that being “needed” enough is both near impossible and super draining. They need to serve others, but for all their work it will never been enough for them. It’s no wonder they have self esteem issues. At least Monika still feels like she could achieve perfection (at least until act 4), Sayori has already given up and accepted that she’s a failure in her eyes. Because they need to be the best for others, they don’t like to talk about their feelings because they don’t want to be a burden on others. Talking about their own problems doesn’t help anyone, but it also doesn’t fix their problems either, so it just gets worse. Self fulfilling prophecy I guess

Yuri and Natsuki are all about finding people to trust, though their exact aims are opposites. They don’t really have actual connections, having been hurt by others in the past, and while they can be fiercely loyal once they find someone safe, they otherwise have a hard time opening up. They yearn for connections deep down, but they way of searching for it means they can’t really form stable ones. Yuri wants to be understood, but the second she feels off another person’s wavelength, she retreats, never committing to actually understanding each other better in fear that they’d hate what they’ve learned. She’s resigned herself to being alone, a fate that Natsuki spends the whole game running away from. Natsuki already has relationships, but they’re really unhealthy, with the people around her not respecting or understand her for who she is. Yet she still endures being misunderstood because the alternative is leaving them behind. She doesn’t trust she could find another place to belong anyways. They embrace each other’s worst fear in an attempt to reach their own desires, but neither approach is complete enough to get them what they need. They’re too afraid to step outside their comfort zone so they constantly accept that their loneliness and lack of acceptance is the default. Having been hurt in the past, they’re really just afraid of talking about their feelings, ironically being the one thing that can actually fulfill their needs. But they think their framework for relationships is how things have to be. They don’t realize one framework requires the other to truly work and be healthy. Self fulfilling prophecy again I think.

So yeah to boil down why the games love to pair up Monika/Sayori and Yuri/Natsuki this would probably be one of the big reasons. They all parallel each other in a million different ways, but for these specific pairings it’s the difference between being the best for your friends vs finding friendship in the first place. It’s just that both of these motivations also make them allergic to opening up about their problems in the game about hidden depths. Oops. Sure hope these things become part of a positive character arc about acceptance and relationships and not a painfully ironic downfall of a tragedy.

The thing uniting them all is that they all yearn for bonds and companionship at the end of the day, whether it’s maintaining these bonds or finding them. The problem is that they feel they aren’t good enough to deserve it, either trying desperately to disprove it by either helping others or putting up a person of confidence that they’re better.

Despite how important it is for relationships, their desire for relationships ironically lead to them having their own unique difficulties in opening up to people. It sounds contradictory, but relationships are complicated like that and it feels honest about how weird insecurity can be. But what prevents them from falling apart from miscommunication and isolation is the fact that they’re willing to try. Throughout the side stories they’re willing to be vulnerable, to open up and risk it all so that their bonds could become the best it can. Through the events of the side stories, their wish for connections can be fulfilled.

Notably due to events in base game none of these things are resolved , and if anyone ever reached the epiphany like Monika, they’d realize their wants aren’t possible in the first place (at least from the perspective of Monika’s epiphany)

Monika can never be truly meaningful if she’s just pngs and lines of text in a visual novel. Her existence can never influence the real world that matters, and with none of her friends being real, she can’t mean something to them either.

Sayori’s stuck in a horror game where everything bad happens to her friends, they all have to suffer for the epiphany. Monika directly says that no joy can be found in the literature club. If everyone is real, every is doomed to suffer with the reality that their lives are stuck in a game. If no one is real, their happiness is artificially, nobody is actually happy, happiness can only exist for someone real. Happiness can’t exist anywhere else in this world

Yuri’s whole deal in act 2 centres around her becoming mischaracterized into an unlikable person. Who she is is misinterpreted and twisted and flanderized into something she doesn’t want to be. Her worst fears are what she is now. Her problems and intentions are misunderstood to the point that she’s just a crazy yandere to everyone now, and now her image is tainted to both her friends and the player. Not that it matters, if she knew that her friends weren’t real, that they could never truly understand or comprehend who she is, that they only pretend to know how she feels, that they have no sentience and are merely lines of code, their understanding and care for her would mean nothing.

Natsuki is more alone than ever. Her one safe space becomes just as abusive as every other person in her life. They all distance from her, ignore her thoughts and needs, make her feel as if she doesn’t belong, put down her very existence in the club, and make her feel like she’s nothing. Nobody cares about her yet she has nothing else to rely on. And there’s no one else in her reality other than a club that hates her. Even then, they aren’t real. Fictional characters can only cure loneliness for so long. She’s still alone in the world with nothing real to care about her back. Shes truly alone

I think because of everyone’s need for connection being similar, they honestly would react similar to Monika if they were ever in her shoes. As the only “real” person in their world, you are the only answer to their problems left. I mean they wouldn’t reenact base game play by play or anything. I feel like some of them would be more direct in influencing the game to their needs or avoid actively affecting the other member’s mental states because it’d be a waste of time. And they’d probably be more attached to the club too (idk there’s also something about how Monika’s views on fiction also influencing her actions and how she kinda looks down on tropes and the type of stuff Yuri and Natsuki likes in base game. Overall I feel like base game would probably be slightly less murdery and manipulative but idk. if I psychoanalyzed everyone maybe I’d get a clearer idea but this is long.).

But like if the player is their only hope for real human connection, I feel like they would do anything to reach that. It might not be the same path as Monika, but if their options are either “be alone forever” or “try reaching out to the player” they’d probably make some questionable decisions at the cost of their own meaningless reality.

Act 4 Sayori had the benefit of hindsight on how best to reach the player, but if everyone started the same as Monika did, I do wonder how they would go about trying to reach the player. Maybe they’d be more similar than they’d think. Maybe that’s why they fit together so well. Maybe that’s why Monika wants to spare them from their fates. Maybe it’s part of why their isolation and dehumanization from each other becomes so painfully ironic. Ironically, they are the same deep down.

FTF: How Powerful Is...?

A prolonged breakdown on a character detailing all their scaling, powers, stats, skill, and abilities to determine exactly how powerful they are.

This Week's Character.....

Kris Dreemurr!

Chapters 3 and 4 provided a substantial boost to the overall power scaling of the entire Deltarune verse, so first I'll go over the scaling present in 1 and 2 to provide a baseline.

Chapter 2 provides the characters with very consistent city level feats. Namely three specifically. The creation of the Library Dark World containing an entire city, Spamton transforming an entire city into a brick wall with a city painted on it, and Noelle's Snowgrave attack creating a snowstorm, which would require City Level attack potency to generate. Easily in the Megaton ranges.

Chapter 3 alone boosts this significantly. Let's start with Ant Tenna.

Video Game Pocket Realities

My argument is that the board games that Tenna creates are qualifable as actual physical pocket realities applicable to his scaling. This is due to the fact that, whenever you encounter an enemy in game, the Delta Warriors are dragged into an actual fight with them within the game board itself, where they can get hurt and be defeated.

During one of these battles, Kris and co fight Lanino and Elnina, who control the sun and the weather itself during the battle. When Lanino leaves, the weather becomes impossibly cold. Colder than even our actual real world Earth would be if the Sun disappeared in real life. This provides further evidence that the Sun in Tenna's Boards is an actual sun.

Creating a pocket reality large enough to house an actual Sun would, at best, be a Large Star Level feat. 8.14 Foe.

This adds consistency to another monumental feat present in this chapter: The Dark Worlds as a whole can contain starry skies.

This is a feat easily landing in the Multi-Solar System Level ranges. The energy required to do this is easily superior to several million Foe. Several million supernovas.

But, that leads us to a pertinent question. Is creating a Dark World a scalable feat to begin with?

Dark Worlds:

Here is how Ralsei describes the nature of Dark Worlds.

Ralsei uses this to justify the argument that he himself isn't actually "real" but the narrative seems to go against him here.

For starters, Ralsei's devaluation of himself in service to Lightners is constantly treated as a character flaw. His spiel to Tenna about all Darkners being forgotten some day is treated as the wrong thing to say, only making the situation worse. So the notion that none of this is scalable because it isn't real is running at odds with the theme of the story.

Secondly: threats in the Dark World are real enough to hospitalize Berdly in the real world. Either by breaking his arm or putting him into a coma depending on your actions in Chapter 2. So, yes, the things present in the Dark World are real enough to be applicable to power scaling.

Basically, Dark Worlds may be "illusory" but they are made real by what Lightners see in the darkest of dark. Effectively made real by perception and the mind. A very Shin Megami Tensei plot point if I'm being honest.

However, a higher argument can be reached depending on how one interprets how time operates with a Dark World. While time still passes in the real world while you're inside a Dark World, the history of a Dark World seems chronologically impossible from the perspective of what objects appear to represent in reality.

All Darkners are real world objects transformed into sentient, sapient beings by being observed in impossible darkness by Lightners, as Ralsei states above. Thus, their memories of and relationships with any Lightners they meet are informed by interactions those Lightners have had with them in the past. However, Darkners relationships with each other don't add up in this same way.

Take Spamton and Ant Tenna for instance. These two have a well established history and an implied close relationship with each other in the past. Spamton references Tenna's stage hand Mike and Tenna has an entire hidden scene showing that he remembers and misses Spamton (even if he can't actually recognize Spamton when he sees him again). But, when you think about it, it's impossible for these two to have met before the creation of both of their native Dark Worlds.

Spamton is a spam email Noelle responded to on the Library Computer while Tenna is the TV in Kris's house. It's impossible for their real world object counterparts to have met each other before. So their established history wouldn't make much sense. While it is possible to physically travel directly from one Dark World to another, this also doesn't track, as Tenna's Dark World isn't created until after Spamton is already defeated and his arc resolved. The only way this would track is if, by creating a Dark World, you retroactively create history. Effectively making a timeline where these characters have always been sentient beings able to interact with each other every time you create a Dark World.

This is backed up by other temporal incongruities. Such as Queen and King having an established history despite existing in seperate buildings. Or Spamton having a meteoric rise in popularity within his Dark World, leading a highly successful career, and then spontaneously crashing and burning said career and getting into an accident that left him do prominently disfigured that Tenna could no longer recognize him. All while his Dark World couldn't have existed for more than a day in the Light World.

I may be thinking too hard about this. It's possible this'll all get cleared up in future Chapters or I'm just misinterpreting all of this. But, given the evidence at this time, creating a Dark World is at least a Multi-Solar System Level, possibly Universal Feat, depending on how you interpret it.

For speed, creating a pocket reality with a starry sky like what we see would require the realm to expand across 18940000000000000000 meters in 13 seconds, judging by how long it took Kris's to form in Chapter 2. That's 4860000000x FTL. Or immeasurable outright for creating a timeline, as you'd need time to exist to judge speed in the first place.

Chapter 4

Chapter 4 broadly just makes a lot of the above more consistent, establishing some extra wackiness by establishing Dark Worlds can be split into two seperate Dark Worlds across different rooms in the same building. It also establishes that Dark Worlds can not only partially revive the dead, provided objects related to them are present to be animated, but can also merge authors with their own fiction, as Gerson implies happened to him during the Secret Boss. Claiming the story "swallowed him up".

Most impressively, our heroes go toe to toe with a newborn Titan. With the prophesy making clear that the Roaring and the Titans that would be created would destroy the Earth and threaten all Dark Worlds.

Ralsei treated Berdly nearly making a second Dark Fountain in Chapter 2 as him nearly causing the Roaring and bringing about the apocalypse. So, even a single baby Titan is likely a threat the entire world, a being who cannot understand mercy and will destroy everything.

It's pretty clear Kris cannot scale one to one with this level power. Even against a baby Titan, while they could survive its attacks, they and their friends could only harm its outer shell. At best, the downscale significantly, placing them at possibly Low-Multiversal at best as of current (Dark Worlds are their own timeline and the Roaring is a threat to all of them). Even that is an extreme highball.

Kris only won through the use of outside help: Us.

The Player:

Now that I've taken time to consider it. I fully believe The Player qualifies as Outerversal under the current definition for Reality > Fiction.

For an explanation on what Outerversal means and how meta bullshit relates, here's my explanation from Gamzee vs Dave:

To summarize, no amount of stacking infinites will ever get your franchise to Outerversal. It simply transcends everything you could stack up completely. So, while the Annoying Dog wouldn't be Outerversal due to being little more than a gag, The Player is treated as a transcendent being all throughout both games.

The Soul isn't us. It's simply what we use to interact with Deltarune's world through the device Gaster connected to us with. No matter how many timez Kris smacks us with a hockey stick, they cannot hurt us. And, if we trully willed it, they could not stop us from forcing them to do terrible things, even if we break reality in the process to do it. There are simply no real consequences they can enact on us and any attempt to retaliate only hurts Kris themself, not us.

So, Kris themself is not Outerversal by any stretch. But they are possessed by an Outerversal being. This gives them access to Outerversal levels of Hax.

This includes:

Resistance to possession or mind control (any being who wants to control Kris would have to overcome our control to do so, not theirs)

Purification (of Titans, Dark Fountains, and similar darkness based enemies)

And Time Manipulation (We overwrite Kris's SAVE with our own at the beginning of the game and can reset upon death, even outside of Dark Worlds. Similarly, The Player can erase or overwrite timelines/save files on a whim)

Oh, and they can use us as a flashlight I guess.

I am keeping an eye on Dark Worlds themselves eventually proving to be Outerversal constructs. There is a lot of evidence right now indicating that they may function in such a capacity, even if I'm hesitant to apply it to anyone yet. Darkners are quite literally illusory shadows on the wall from the perspective of Lightners, is a way very similar to how physical reality is described in the philosophy of Plato's Cave. And Gerson being "swallowed by his own story" just reeks of potential Reality > Fiction transcendence stuff depending on how later Chapters play with it. But, seeing how applying it to anyone at this point would effectively be upgrading everyone in the game arbitrarily, I'm leaving the Player as the only true Outerversal entity right now.

So, here's the final tally:

Low End:

Multi-Solar System Level (0.0168 ZettaFoe)

Massively FTL+ (4860000000c)

High End:

Universal+, possible Low Multiversal (at least 2 times Universal, due to the coexistence of both Castle Town and current Light World)

Mediamancy: unknown armies updated class

Mediamancy is a mix of videomancy, and infomancy and a bit of bibliomancy (at least in my mind). It is the magic of using media as a conduit for casting spells. I have read the wiki page regarding mediamancy and have come to the conclusion that it is kinda warped in the sense that it can’t fully be adopted as a practice irl. So, with that in mind, I came up with a way to use it anyway (mainly cause I hate to be told no to things).

How to practice mediamancy:

Media as charms: I have taken to carrying around thumb drives with folders full of videos and photos and books that I simply insert into my phone or computer and plug in. A few minutes of tapping in allows me to feel revitalized and ready to zap. Without these, I feel kinda naked in a way.

Images and archetypes as glamours: imagine copying and pasting psychic imagery over your aura to allow for you to enhance certain talents you have or provide you with base skills. That is what this is. Granted it’s an illusion but it is still very useful.

Music as potions: I’ve beaten this one to death, see any of my other posts on cybermancy or pop culture magic.

News articles as bibliomancy: pretty self explanatory.

The key to mediamancy is to always be plugged in somehow.

Tools of a mediamancer

- thumb drives and ssd hard drives: it may just be me, but I’m obsessed with storage devices and storage space. This way I can carry all my stuff with me and not have to worry.

- smartphone: this is like my wand, my scrying mirror and my grimoire all rolled into one.

- portable charger: a good charger is the best way to make sure your phone doesn’t run out of battery. If you’re like me, then you would want to carry at least two chargers and a wall plug to charge the chargers.

- phone attachments and accessories: camera add ons, usb dongles, stylus, Bluetooth earbuds and other add ons are all useful for various functionalities of mediamancy since you’re not just consuming media but creating it too.

- a good bag to carry it all

Software tools of a mediamancer

- streaming services: kinda essential, but at least one good streaming service is required or a free service that gives you the feel of tv watching.

- blogging platform: for those who embrace the written media, this is a good way to work with social media sorcery and literary magic

- news app: I recommend google news since it’s free

- writing software: I recommend scrivener because it’s a writer’s dream space.

Voice notes app: in lieu of a voice recorder, a voice notes app is good for making vocal spells and recording conversations for making media based spells using audio as ingredients.

Music streaming service: at the very least it’s good to boost energy if nothing else. I recommend YouTube music due to the wide range of ambient music available.

- e-reader app: this is essential for literary mediamancy since books are always being written. I recommend kindle since almost everyone has a smartphone and an Amazon account and there are tons of free books you can get from it. If you have an Amazon account then you have a kindle account.

Video game emulator: mostly for nostalgic purposes, this can be turned into a way to practice Ludomancy (video game magic).

Chubformers drabble #128!

Character: Megatron (Cyberverse)

Word count: 1.1k

(This story uses she/her for Megatron. DLDL)

Not even a minute had passed into her stream for the night before dozens of viewers poured their praise and excitement into her chat box. Tonight was going to be a special night, and all because of the loyalty and support of her beloved fans.

There was nothing like putting on a good show for willing participants, and in her free time, Megatron had found great pleasure in doing just that. Earth culture had its perks, as did adapting to new realms of interest and garnering a good following. The moment she had discovered streaming services and the potentials it could provide, Megatron was hooked. All it took was a good few fans to boost her numbers, and suddenly her career was skyrocketing.

Indulging herself every so often in such a demanding hobby meant sacrificing the little things here and there, and at first, Megatron saw no more potential in this new interest than the bare minimum of garnering attention and support on the side. The more she did it, however, the more fun it became, and before long, her evenings were booked out for one thing and one thing only: streaming her content for all of Cybertron to see.

Cybertronians liked experiencing earth customs through a trustworthy leader just as much as she enjoyed treating herself to them, it seemed, and though this remained a strict side-hobby for the first several weeks, Megatron’s popularity only grew. Word spread across the base, and before long, she was even starting to see familiar Autobot faces popping up on the screens of her monitors. Nobody could pass up on the chance to watch a legend from their own planet typing away at a too-small keyboard and hear her sultry replies to the lucky few comments each night, that much was for certain.

She was an icon without even trying, and countless bots had turned to her side for the mere opportunity to become a part of her streams. The streaming had started with gaming, of course, and Megatron loved her nightly routine of setting up the monitors and working away at every suggested game her viewers had to offer. Why stop there when she could have so much more fun?

Gaming was where she started, but now, Megatron was involved in bigger things… bigger and messier things. Streaming was an art form, and there was plenty of opportunities to up her skills with the right amount of content.

Mukbangs, a viewer had commented one evening during an open stream. She should do mukbangs. The suggestion itself was lost at first amidst the whirlwind of keyboard-smashing comments and lewd requests in response to her occasional teasing, but Megatron read it quickly enough. It seemed like a strange suggestion at first, especially when she was struggling to pronounce the word, but after the mere mention of it during a lapse in her stream, the chatbox immediately erupted into a unanimous uproar of excitement.

Mukbangs it is then, she had said, and mukbangs it was… for a long time, in fact, and boy, did it have some results.

From behind a computer screen, it was hard to see the effects of her doting fans’ shared support. That was what tonight’s stream was going to fix, however, all thanks to several donations from more than a dozen of her viewers. As she turned on the camera and waved in her first several visitors, Megatron began unboxing her gifts.

“I’ve had such a wonderful audience lately,” she said, making a show of batting her optics and sighing with contentment as she tore the box’s flaps open. “So many new faces, and so much generosity from you all… it’s about time we finally did a little something to celebrate.”

Amidst the pings of her console and the constant flashes of new comments and joining viewers, Megatron fished through the box in search of her first pair of lingerie. Each piece her fans had sent was just as raunchy as the last, and it didn’t take her long to find a small two-piece compiled of thin straps and a see-through thong that she just knew would tear against her bulging frame.

Oh, what a sight that would make. She already couldn’t wait to put it on.

“I see whoever picked this pretty pair out had an eye for style,” she said, holding the small outfit up for her viewers to see. “Either that or they just wanted to see how tight it would fit on this old frame of mine. You bots haven’t exactly made it easy on me, what with all those mukbang requests…”

She made a show of wiggling her aft against the seat before standing, her fat frame jiggling from the sudden movement. The chatbox was a flurry of letters and comments as she pushed her chair aside and twirled in place, taking extra care to pinch and fondle at the pudgy curves hanging from her hips and belly.

“Look at what you mechs have done to me,” she said as she stopped her groping long enough to give her plump belly a resounding slap. “I’ve become so fat, and it’s because of you viewers. All the food you encourage me to eat, all that time spent lounging on my aft in front of a monitor’s screen… you spoil me.”

A ping from the monitor caught her attention, and Megatron paused in her gloating to read the request from the generous donor. A hefty sum of over a hundred thousand shanix followed the message asking her to put on the outfit she’d chosen in front of the camera, and to show off just how snug it fit in the process. With an ever-widening smile and a servo on her hip, Megatron was happy to do just that.

“Ready for the showstopper aren’t you… ScreenLurker2000?” She pursed her lips. “Don’t tell me you’re the one who donated all these wonderful outfits~”

The sleek spandex material was given a sharp snap before Megatron untangled the straps and started stepping in. One fat thigh followed the other, and the slim thong was shimmied up her legs until it stretched as far across her belly and aft as it could reach. The top, which was little more than strings to hold it all in place, stretched and tore as she hiked it over rolls and folded its fabric in place.

“Well?” she said, offering another full spin to show off the merchandise. “What do we—“

The snap of fabric was met with a yelp of surprise, and Megatron could do no more than stand in shock as the bands covering her waist and digging into her belly came undone. Her too-small outfit was greatly undersized, it would seem, and what little remained after falling away from the rolls of fat hanging from her frame lay in tatters that swung from the thong, which was held in place by her chafing thighs.

“Oops,” she giggled, hiding her sneer behind a servo. “Better luck next time, screen lurker. Oh, and thank you ever so kindly for the donation. Now, what shall I try on next?”
