Carrying on from last session I am know at the stage where I am nearly ready to paint and weather my gun. All I need to do is to hollow out the inside of the barrel and carve out the air vents that cool the barrel. To do this I used a drill to make it easier to hollow out than carving it out with a craft knife. The only worry of doing this is that it might tear the barrel and ruin it luckily, I went at a slow speed. Which worked at well as all I had to do is neaten the edges. With the air vent, I just had to carve out the area with the same technique I used on the shell ejector. With this done I am ready to paint but I have to protect the foam from the spray paint. As the day before I tested the spray paint on a scrap piece of foam to check it doesnât eat away at the foam. This turned out to be the right call as if not it would have eaten away my foam on my gun. To solve this issue, I just have to cover the foam in pva glue to seal the foam to give it a smooth finish but also to protect it. I learnt this method from a YouTube tutorial from Andrew DFT. So, it pays off to look into tutorials as they have had the same problem but have solved the issue.
So, I gave my gun two layer of glue to make sure that it doesnât eat away at the foam. When I got to the spray painting I done even coats to give it an even coat. Which took a couple of times to get an even cover. Once painted I realised that some of the carved-out edges didnât get cover in pva so it ate away at the edges. Luckily it didnât do too much damage but in future I will make sure that all the corners and carved out area to be sealed properly. I now move onto the weathering which I used a metallic paint to dry brush on areas that would be worn down. Â With my paint, I used a black gloss which kind of works but it was a bit to shiny so I used graphite shavings to reduce the gloss making it look more realistic.
