Always Been Hours
Summary: "You really think that you forget about what we had, Doll." said Chucky. "You're dead wrong. You cant do that to us." he says. "Im nobody special remember." said Esmeray. "I do but thats how you see yourself. Do you know what i see?" said Chucky. "What we see?" Tiffany corrected. "We ourselves in you. We're not that different and deep down is a killer ready to get out." said Chucky holding his knife to her. "You know you want to." he sang urging her to take it. "Come on, Sweetie." said Tiffany. Ch5
Esmeray got off the subway going up the stairs on her way to work drinking her coffee for her early shift. She looked out for any crowded sidewalk at this hour when she noticed the newspaper with a picture of Chucky. 'Lakeshore Strangler Dead.' Esmeray shook her head knowing that day he was going to pay for what he did and now isnt her problem anymore and began moving on with her life. She went inside the mall to do her routine even helping out the new employee from yesterday. "Esmeray? Hi. Listen would you mind picking up Andy? I just remembered that i have to pick up my dry cleanings." said the woman. "Alright, Maggie. I'll keep him busy while Karen gets Andy's present." said Esmeray. "Oh. But she will. Theres a peddler who has one thanks for reminding me. You're a peach." said Maggie running off to find Karen. "Excuse but you have another size?" said a young plus size woman holding a pair of jeans. Esmeray looked at the size on the jeans humming in thought before gesturing her follow her to the fitting room. She had the woman put the jeans on seeing it can barely be button in the front and went grab her mini sewing bag with thread, pins, needles, and extra accessories. Esmeray used her sewing scissors to snip the sides to expand it and sew in the extra fabric until the woman can be able button it. "I'm normally dont do this for customers but i can see you pulling this off. I can ring this up for you." said Esmeray. "Thank you." said the woman then changed out of the jeans to pay for it. After her shift was over Esmeray went to the school where Andy is waiting outside for him with the other parents. She looked around once the school went off seeing the children walking out and found a small boy wearing heavy winter clothes looking up seeing her. "Aunt Esme!" said the boy running into her arms. "Hi Andy. My special birthday boy." said Esmeray kissing his face making him giggle. "What are you doing here?" said Andy holding her hand as they walked. "Im here for you. Cant miss you turning what eight?" said Esmeray looking down at him. "Im turning six." said Andy. "Youre not turning six?" said Esmeray. "But i am." said Andy then screamed once Esmeray quickly scooped him in her arms holding upside down. "Put me down." he say laughing as Esmeray did so. "I cant help that youre adorable." said Esmeray holding his hand again walking them to the apartment. She opened the door letting him first taking the elevator to the top floor walking down the hall seeing Karen just coming home. "Hi mommy." said Andy getting her attention.
"Hi Andy. Hi Esmeray." said Karen opening the door letting them in since she has large package in her arms. "Need help with that?" said Esmeray. "Just with the door. Andy don't you want to open your other present." said Karen having Andy face her. He eagerly opened it seeing it was the Good Guy doll that Andy wanted. "Wow mom. Thanks. Aunt Esme look what mommy got me." said Andy pulling the doll out. "A Good Guy Doll. Thats amazing. How does he work?" said Esmeray. "Go show her." said Karen smiling as they all went to the living room. "Hi im Andy. What your name?" said Andy looking at the doll. "Hi I'm Chucky. And I'm your friend til the end." said the doll in a robot voice. "Thats great." said Karen while Esmeray looked surprised by this. "Oh and guess what. Aunt Esme is going to sleep over here tonight." she says. "Really?" said Andy. "I am." said Esmeray as Andy ran to give her a hug. "Maggie is coming with cake soon. Why dont you get Chucky settled while we get your bath ready? Can't have a birthday get a cold now do we?" said Esmeray. "Okay. Thanks mommy." said Andy carrying Chucky to his room after hugging Karen. Esmeray placed her bag down rubbing her face with both hands lean forward a bit having her elbows rest on her knees. "Is everything okay, Esmeray?" said Karen. "Yeah. Just that name, Chucky. It was a nickname of old boyfriend before i was adopted. Ran into him yesterday and heard he was dead." said Esmeray. "Must be a coincidence." said Karen walking to the kitchen. "Maybe." said Esmeray. "By the way, what were you doing with that woman?" said Karen. "Oh i was helping her fit a pair of jeans by doing my magic touch." said Esmeray. "You know you're going get in trouble for this. Its not the first time that you did this." said Karen. "I know but designing clothes and making it come alive is my thing." said Esmeray. "I know and your sketches are incredible. Not i have ever seen but this isnt the way to get your dream career started." said Karen. "This is my therapy to forget about my . . . " Esmeray stopped to see Andy coming back holding Chucky. "Chucky wants you to hold him while i get my toys in the tub." said Andy handing Chucky to her. "Okay. But let me get the water going for you or do you want to do that?" said Esmeray. "i can do it." sad Andy walking away. "You were saying." said Karen looking at her. "I often get nightmare of my dad or brother sexually abusing me since i was eight." said Esmeray. "I havent talked about it in a long time." she says. "Didn't your family pick up the signs that it was happening?" said Karen. "No one believed me. Until i told my neighbors and friends from school." siad Esmeray. "I like to be hugged." said Chucky. Esmeray held him close as her body began to shake when Karen decided to make some coffee for her and herself. "Im sorry that happened to you but hey its all over now." said Karen then walked off to check on Andy who walked into the bathroom.
Later that night Esmeray finished her dinner that Karen made leaving her hot cup of tea in the coffee table to cool down and help put the dishes away with Maggie. She washed her plate and dried it putting where it belongs including the utensils hearing Andy play with Chucky. "Andy its bedtime." Said Maggie. "Come on Chucky." Said Andy getting up to go to his room but stopping to hear a whisper. Esmeray looked to see him leaning over to Chucky like he was talking and turned to her and Maggie. "Chucky wants to stay to watch the news." Said Andy. "Its late and you have school in the morning." Said Esmeray. "I got him." Said Maggie taking Andy and Chucky to get ready for bed. Esmeray walked over to her cup of tea drinking slowly until it was gone and went to wash and put away. She then to feel really tired all of a sudden went to sit on the aide of the couch. "You okay there?" Said Maggie coming back. "Just feeling tired." Said Esmeray letting out a yawn. "Must be the cake or the tea. Go sleep i got this taken care of." Said Maggie seeing how tired she looked. Esmeray laid down on the couch getting comfortable then felt her body drift off. She didnt know how long has been asleep but all Esmeray knew was she heard yelling and loud crash jolted her awake. "Maggie?! Andy?!" Said Esmeray sitting up to look around finding the window was broken. She got up fast to look out and saw Maggie lay on top of a van not moving. "Aunt Esme?" Said Andy. "Stay in your room, Andy." Said Esmeray going to the telephone. "Yes. I want report a horrible accident." Said Esmeray. She just told them what happened and hanged up going to Andy's room. "Whats going on?" Sais Andy rubbing his eyes. "The police will be here to check on Maggie. She had an accident. We have to wait out in the hall and see what happened." Said Esmeray. "Is she okay?" Said Andy. "I dont know. But the police woll be here soon. Im going to put my shoes on and we can get out." Said Esmeray. She put on her shoes while Andy held Chucky and held her hand going out of the apartment waiting by the door. When the polive arrived Esmeray explained everything she knew before falling asleep. She then saw Karen coming looking for Andy finding him of the men in charge who told her the news of Maggie's death. "What do you ladies see here?" Said the man. He gestured the floor with tiny footprints having Eameray look at him in disbelief. "Are you fucking kidding me?!" Said Esmeray. "Ma'am. I know that . . ." "That what a six year old would commit a crime like this?" Esmeray cut the man off when Andy came over with Chucky. "Andy go to yo ur room. Aunt Esme has to home but will see you soon okay." Said Karen. "We also need to do a investigation with her too." Said the man looking at Esmeray. "Why?" Said Esmeray. She was then lead to the living room with less officers to get some privacy. "We have questions with your connection to Charles Lee Ray."

Guess What? I’m Not a Robot Ch5
Summary: Megan gets back from the disastrous meeting, and things get better, then worse. Why is it always worse when interacting with other humans?
Word Count: 2,352
Warnings: Implied anxiety and depression, implied minor panic attack, implied suicidal thoughts, swearing near the end
5.30PM Tuesday 19th October 2038
“Megan! You are back early,” Paul noticed as the door opened. When there was no response he looked out of the kitchen towards the front door, just in time to see Megan slam her bedroom door shut. “Is everything all right?”
Megan’s breath hitched on that question, hand clapping over her mouth. No. No she was not alright. She’d been holding it back the entire journey home, and one question was going to undo it all.
“I’m alright,” she managed to get out. “Everything’s fine.”
There was a pause before Paul responded.
“I have not started on dinner yet. Would you like me to?”
“No, thank you,” Megan wanted to be left alone, but she couldn’t bring herself to say it.
Tch. Can’t even tell an android, something designed to listen to you, to go away
Mega swung her bag off her back and flung it onto her bed, trying to not make her distress obvious.
“Understood,” there was a soft shuffling sound as Paul went back to the kitchen. Megan let out a sigh and got into her sleeping clothes. It was only just half five, but she just felt so tired.
Yet, she spent hours staring at the dark ceiling, trying to hold herself together.
8AM Wednesday 20th October 2038
She had forgotten to set an alarm, but Paul filled that role by knocking on her door at 8AM.
“Are you awake Megan?”
Megan groaned to herself, rolling over to stare at the ceiling. Awake, yes. Willing to get out of bed? Remained to be seen.
Paul didn’t try to get another response, so Megan continued to stare at the ceiling. There would be messages on her phone from Alex, telling her when the next meeting was. She had to watch livestreams and recordings of lectures, work more on her assignment, and finish that commission.
She didn’t want to do any of it.
She also didn’t want to sleep anymore, so what did she want?
Oh yes, everything to stop. Not, necessarily end. Just stop for a while.
Yeah, except that was never going to happen, now was it?
With a heavy sigh Megan got out of bed and shambled out of the room. The Roomba had been set loose, carefully avoiding all obstacles, and Paul was just, standing there, with a completely blank expression. His LED blinking slowly, like the old buffering symbol.
As Megan closed her door the LED solidified and Paul turned to look at her, smile forming.
“Good morning Megan. Would you like breakfast?”
Given that she hadn’t eaten anything since lunch yesterday, Megan knew what the answer was supposed to be. “Yes please.”
It seemed like Paul’s smile grew wider as he went to get started in the kitchen.
Megan followed him in, watching as he pulled out flour, eggs and milk and started mixing them all together. Making a guess as to what he was doing, Megan began looking through the cupboards for the frying pan.
“Bottom cupboard, two doors left from the sink,” intoned Paul, before his LED blinked yellow and he added. “I assume you were looking for the frying pan.”
“Yeah,” Megan followed his directions and pulled the frying pan, co-incidentally also a hand-me-down from the Beckwith’s when the old one had not been up to the task.
She placed it on the hob and Paul, still mixing, reached to one of the overhead cupboards with one hand and pulled out some oil that had probably been lurking in the back for months. He handed it to Megan, who poured a little into the pan and clumsily swung the pan to spread the oil to the edges before placing it back on the hob.
Expertly Paul took hold of the frying pan and poured batter into it, making sure it got the edges before setting it back down and getting a spatula ready for flipping.
Megan got a plate ready as the pancake cooked, Paul calmly flipping it when it was time. Paul didn’t try to talk, and Megan wasn’t going to start a conversation. This was, nice, peaceful.
It was also a little surprising that he was cooking pancakes the European way, although one of the Beckwiths did come from the UK, so that might be why.
Paul placed the freshly cooked pancake on Megan’s plate and got to cooking another one, and kept going until the jug he was using was empty and there was a 6 high pile of thin pancakes on the plate.
“Sugar?” Paul asked, pre-emptively reaching for the cupboard where he had put the sugar.
“Yes please.”
Paul pulled out a bag of sugar and after a moment of consideration and LED flashing, placed the bag on the small dinner table.
Megan carried the plate over as Paul collected cutlery. Once down she used a teaspoon to sprinkle sugar onto the top pancake, and began to eat.
Paul stood nearby, not in the same standby mode she had seen earlier, but still completely still.
“You can sit down if you want,” Megan half mumbled, feeling a lot better now.
Paul paused for a moment, hovering awkwardly, before pulling out the chair on the other side of the table and sitting in it stiffly.
It took a few more minutes of mental back and forth for Megan to talk again.
“Sorry about last night.”
Paul tilted his head slightly, clearly uncertain as to why she was apologising.
“You were probably preparing to make dinner, and I wasted your time,” that barely scratched the surface of what she was sorry for, but she wasn’t sure how to say the rest of it.
“It’s fine. I had not even started yet. You did not waste my time.”
“O-okay. Good,” Megan got another bite of pancake down.
“So what are your plans for today?”
“Sit at my computer. Work.”
“May I suggest grocery shopping? For exercise as well as buying other supplies which you appear to be lacking.”
Megan felt her mouth twitch in a strange half smile. “You’re not going to let this go, are you?”
“Your current lifestyle is not healthy, and given your otherwise low maintenance, this seems to be the best way to assist you.”
Megan sighed, better get this over with. She considered giving in and giving Paul her bank details, but that probably wouldn’t deter him.
“Fine. We’ll go when I’m dressed.”
It was tempted after that to just, not get dressed. Although, she didn’t want to deal with Paul potentially asking her about that, so just took her time to get ready.
“It 42 degrees Fahrenheit outside,” Paul said as Megan grabbed her jacket. “You may wish for something warmer.”
“I’ll be fine,” Megan assured, grabbing some plastic bags that were usually left over from takeout.
“Do you not own a thicker jacket?”
“No.”
“I can add that to the shopping list.”
“I don’t have the money for new clothes.”
“If I had known your budget then I would not have made the suggestion. What is the budget?”
Again with android sass. “About, fifteen dollars, or so.”
“Understood.”
The two left the apartment, Megan tapping her pockets every minute or so to definitely make sure that she still had her keys and wallet.
When they left the building the whipped by them, blowing Megan’s red hair across her face. She ignored it in favour of shoving her hands deeper into her coat pocket. Paul hadn’t been wrong; it was freezing! It was only October, why was it so cold?
Paul led the way towards the nearest grocery store, which Megan had never been to in roughly a year of being in the area. She fell into step with the taller android and buried the bottom half of her face in the collar of her jacket, with her shoulders hunched up around her ears.
She’d grown up in suburbia, so the amount of people on the street when she wasn’t catching the bus still caught her off guard.
“Sorry, excuse me,” she muttered into her coat as she tried to dodge everyone. A large chunk of those walking around were androids, so they easily moved out of the way. Humans weren’t quite so good about it, and at one point she walked on the road to avoid bumping into anyone.
Paul quickly realised that Megan wasn’t next to him and stopped, scanning the area as Megan ducked and weaved to get back to him. It wasn’t like he was tallest in the crowd, but he was a decent focal point.
Megan ducked under a pile of boxes an android was carrying and stood next to Paul. Another reason she hated going out, everyone in the city was tall with no concept of personal space.
“Are you okay?” Paul asked.
“Yeah, just, don’t like getting in the way.”
Paul nodded. “Stay close then,” he added, LED flashing yellow for a second before walking again. Despite the obvious difference in stride, Paul kept his pace slow so Megan wouldn’t get caught up in the crowd.
Stupid. You’re a grown adult and need a babysitter to get through a city?
Nineteen is hardly an adult
Old enough to not need an escort
Megan scowled and followed Paul into the warmth of the grocery store.
“Let’s check clearance,” Megan muttered, leading the way this time in the less crowded store. She actually didn’t know where it was, but for now it helped her ego a little bit.
Paul followed her as she found the clearance section, food items covered in little yellow stickers. Mostly tired looking vegetables, microwave meals that would go out of date that day and meat that would have to go in the freezer almost immediately before it spoiled.
Megan scanned it for a moment, realising just out of practice she was at organising meals. Surely she had been better at this when she was a freshmen, right?
“Okay, er. Paul, you’re the food guy, any thoughts?”
Paul’s LED flashed yellow for a few seconds before grabbing some carrots, potatoes and a 500g pack of minced beef.
“I can’t eat all that!” Megan half whispered.
“These will be for multiple meals. If I portion the meat and freeze it individually it will last a lot longer.”
“That, makes sense.”
The two left the clearance section, and ended up picking up butter, jelly and cheese. It seemed like there was a lot of food piling up in the basket, which Paul was carrying. He saw her looking at the basket and also looked, LED going yellow as he scanned.
“We are well within the budget,” he assured. “We should be able to get something unhealthy as well.”
“Since when did you promote unhealthiness?”
“I do not. The occasional unhealthy treat is healthy for the mind.”
“Right...” Megan wasn’t sure how she felt about that. Although, she did grab a pack of own brand chocolate bars that were on a half price promotion. She wasn’t sure whether or not she saw Paul nod approvingly or not.
“Anything else?” Megan asked.
“This should be sufficient for now.”
“Okay,” Megan relaxed a little. This hadn’t been so bad so far. Clearly her nerves were just making things seem worse than they are, like always.
The two joined the queue to pay, and got through fairly swiftly. The only issue that came up was when she had to use her card to pay for stuff, but the cashier was an android so didn’t say anything.
Paul bagged the groceries as she paid and took them off the counter when she was done.
“Thanks Paul,” she said, feeling slightly guilty. She’d never considered how heavy that basket must have gotten.
“Why the fuck are you thanking it?”
Megan froze like a deer in the headlights. She forced herself to put her foot in front of the other, one by one. If she didn’t answer they would leave her alone.
“Hey! I asked you a question!”
Shit! No no no no no no no.
Someone, she didn’t know who as her eyes had found the floor, stepped in front of her.
“Why the fuck are you thanking the tin can? It’s doing what it’s supposed to!”
Megan didn’t answer. Her throat closed up and her brain blue screened.
“Are you even listening to me?” they stepped closer and shoved her in the shoulder, making her stumble back into Paul, who didn’t have a free hand.
“I’m going to have to ask you to stop harassing customers,” intoned the cashier android, which just made the angry person scoff.
“And what are you gonna do about it, tin man?” they challenged, and surprisingly, it was Paul who spoke up.
“I can call the police on charges of harassment and assault. There were multiple Closed Circuit television cameras that have captured what you have done and said.”
“You stay out of this!” snarled the aggressor, but they were appearing more nervous. They glanced at where the security cameras where before looking back at Megan, who hadn’t moved. “Whatever. Waste of fucking time.”
There was one last shove before they left, but Paul stood like a rock so Megan wouldn’t stumble, and she still didn’t move.
Her breathing was loud in her ears and her thoughts were frozen and racing all at once. She needed to move, get away from the people, but her feet just weren’t moving.
“Megan,” someone was saying her name.
“Ma’am, you need to move,” someone else, someone she didn’t recognise.
Some gripped her shoulders and gently steered her away from the checkout.
“Ma’am?”
Megan finally moved on her own, looking up to see one of the security androids leaned over to reach her level, LED blinking yellow.
“I’m fine,” the lie slipped out easily, and it was enough to get them to back off.
She was calming down now, and could feel embarrassment wash over her.
“Let’s go home Paul,” she mumbled, and Paul followed as she left the store. The wind blew bitterly still, but Megan found herself not caring, staying as close to Paul as possible as they went back to the apartment.
Ah, it got better, and then it got worse. Not much to say on this one to be honest, a little domestic chapter with some anxiety thrown in, wooo!

12.03PM Wednesday 10th
It took longer, way longer than Megan was happier with, but they were finally ready to go.
Alex had whipped around the other supporters they had and a few had agreed to protest in Capitol Park. Lucas had his phone charged and had tried to download the app for the traffic cams, but had come up with an error.
“Cell phone’s just gone down, wifi and signal,” he groaned. “It won’t be long until we have no internet connection at all.”
Julia had come through there, having found a bunch of old hand held radios in her house. They had spent most of their time trying to find working batteries for them all. Finally, everyone had a working one, they all had working flashlights (also from Julia) and something to defend themselves with.
Alex and Julia’s households were anti gun, which was the first time either of them had cursed it. So instead rolling pins, kitchen knives and a single taser served as their weapons. Ivy, Oscar and Julia went without, trusting either their skills or their size to hold their own.
Megan was more than slightly horrified that she had the taser, but caved to the argument that she was the most vulnerable, and the most likely to be able to sneak up on someone.
They had all been decked out with peaked caps and beanies, and as many layers on their upper body as they could get away with. Megan’s skinny frame was padded out to over twice her size and Oscar looked like a giant. They didn’t have any bullet proof vests, so this would have to do.
Alex adjusted their extra padding and looked around. Their eyes flicked over to Allison, who stared back coldly. Alex and Julia had explained the breakdown, more or less, but Allison clearly hadn’t forgiven them yet.
“Alright,” Allison put herself in charge of the pep talk. “This is probably the most insane thing we’ve ever done, but we’ve got a convoy to interrupt and a bare minimum of two androids to save. We’re going to have to be clever, we’re going to have to be sneaky,” she then took a deep breath and looked around the rag tag group. “This might not work. This might fail horribly. We’re only human, but we’ve got to try.”
Oscar slowly put his hand up.
“What?” Allison asked.
“That wasn’t a good pep talk,” Oscar said what they were all thinking.
“At least I think we’re going to be successful!”
“Really?” Ivy asked. “I didn’t get that impression at all.”
Alex took a deep breath. “Let’s kick the army’s ass and rescue the androids!”
“That’s more like it!” Nathan crowed. “Let’s do it!”
3.23PM Wednesday 10th
All enthusiasm had died half an hour into the walk. The weather had improved, the sun was out and the wind dropped, but it was still somehow colder. Even worse the multiple layers were baking them at the same time.
The rolling pin and taser weighed heavily in Megan’s various pockets, and felt wholly inadequate. A rolling pin and a taser against fully armed and armoured soldiers. They were doomed.
Also, three hours, anything could have happened in three hours. Paul could already be-
No. Now’s not the time for worrying. Do now, worry later.
Alex walked over to Megan, bundled up in black like the rest of them.
“You okay?” they asked, and it took Megan a few seconds to answer.
“No.”
“Me neither,” Alex admitted. “Do,” they swallowed and lowered their voice so the others wouldn’t hear. “Do you really think we’ll find them? Paul and Ella?”
“Why are asking me?” Megan hissed.
“Because you’re in the same boat. What do you reckon?”
“I-I don’t know,” Megan admitted. “I want, I want to find them in one piece and save them, but I know it might not happen.”
Alex took a deep breath through their nose and nodded. “Yeah. We might not find them,” the words were awkward, like they didn’t know what they were saying. “But, we will. We have to.”
Megan stepped away and Alex drifted off to the others, who still hadn’t quite forgiven them. Alex had apologised, but had not explained what had caused their flip flop in priorities.
“Guys,” Oscar suddenly said, voice echoing along the empty road they were walking along. “We’re here.”
The group split up to cover opposite sides of the road and proceeded to move with more caution. They crested over a ridge and Megan felt her jaw drop.
A line of vans stretched for miles, all the way to near horizon, where the vague outline of what could only be the Recycling Centre stood. The vans were single file for now, but further down they seemed to go into two lines, only to merge into one line at the end.
Or at least, that’s what Lucas, the one with the binoculars, claimed.
“Can you see Paul’s truck? Over,” Megan asked over the radio.
“Paul’s in one of two trucks, and I can’t see licence plates with these binoculars. Over.”
“Anything else we need to know? Over,” Alex asked, as they were on Megan’s side.
“Looks like the military are patrolling the road edge further down. Seems like we have two options; circle around as much as we can and approach from behind, or go through the road. Over.”
“We’ll be spotted if go through the road,” Allison was quick to argue, but Julia jumped in before she could say ‘Over’.
“It looks like there are guard towers. We’ll be spotted either way. Over.”
“Why don’t we just take the truck?” Nathan asked. “I mean, they’re bulletproof right? This one’s right at the back of the queue, I can’t hear anymore coming. We take one truck and drive straight through the fence and take over from the inside. Over.”
“All of these ideas are insane. Over,” Allison groaned.
“Do you have any better ideas? Over,” Alex asked, and the responding sigh could be heard from Megan’s side of the road.
“How about we take a truck and go from there? Over,” Oscar suggested.
“You want to play this by ear? Over,” Ivy sounded incredulous. “We’ll get killed doing that!”
“We’ll have to play it by ear no matter what we do,” Julia argued. “We can’t predict everything. I agree with Oscar. Over.”
“Same, over,” Maggie agreed.
“Who else thinks we should go by Coubertin’s plan? Over,” Allison asked.
Megan, Nathan, Lucas all gave an affirmative and Alex jumped in.
“Good, now that’s decided, let’s bust this truck. Over.”
Allison tried to protest, but was ultimately drowned out.
“Megan, you’re the smallest,” Julia suggested, and Megan braced herself. “Can you get a look at the driver’s cab? Over.”
Megan felt nerves grip her. No, she couldn’t. She’ll get spotted, shot, ruin everything somehow. There was no way-
“Yeah, okay. Over,” the affirmative was out of her mouth without realising, and she couldn’t take it back.
“You sure?” Alex asked without the radios. “Lucas and I aren’t that much bigger.”
“It’s okay,” it wasn’t, but Megan didn’t want to waste any more time. “I’ll be quick.”
Megan dropped her backpack by Alex’s feet before pressed herself against the hedge. She prowled as best she could along the road. Her heart pounded in her throat, and once she got close enough to the truck she darted behind it.
She stood there for a few seconds, catching her breath and trying to calm her nerves. She couldn’t pick at her sleeves with gloves on and found herself fidgeting with her fingers instead.
Taking a deep breath she somewhat settled her nerves as best she could and crept around the side of the van at a crouch. Once at the driver’s window she carefully peeked up through the window.
A bored soldier sat on the passenger side, the driving put on automatic. The soldier had their helmet off and on the passenger seat next them while they read the news on their tablet, only occasionally glancing up through the windscreen.
Megan made her way back equally as nervously, and didn’t relax until she was on the other side of the hedge with her half of the AA and re-shouldering her backpack.
“One soldier,” she panted over the radio. “Not alert, passenger side. Over.”
“What do you mean by not alert? Over,” Allison asked.
“Helmet off, reading the news. Over.”
“Okay,” Alex took over. “Nervous Incarnate, you go and distract him by knocking on the driver’s side. Coubertin can open the passenger side and drag them out. Captain Hardass, you still have the duct tape? Over.”
“Yes, over.”
“You tape them up, get the keys, we get the androids out of the van and see what happens. Over.”
“And, we should just go along with that?” Allison asked snidely.
“Do you have any better ideas? Over.”
There was no response from Allison, and Oscar turned to Megan. “Shall we?”
Megan nodded quickly and crept back towards the van, taking the same path as before. Oscar took position on the other side of the van and after a minute or so, Julia appeared, wielding duct tape.
Megan crept back towards the door, and realised that everyone was waiting on her signal.
She raised her knuckles to the door and made to rap, but stopped. Why did she stop?
Her breathing was loud in her ears, her heart rate thundered and snakes were mating in her belly. Yeah, that was why.
She considered using the rolling pin, but balked at the last minute. It might attract other drivers.
The first time she lightly tapped on the door, and got angry at herself for such a light knock. Even with the quiet electric engine idling there was no way they heard that. She poured her anger into the next one, almost banging on the door.
Alarmed at how the violent the reaction might be she darted back to hide behind the van. She heard the door unlock, and then it all happened quickly.
The passenger door was flung open and there was a brief cry of alarm as Oscar grabbed them. Megan couldn’t bring herself to look, but the sounds of struggle didn’t fade.
She suddenly heard frantic footsteps heading her way and panicked, scrambling for her taser and rolling pin, one in each hand.
The solider appeared from around the side of the van, and Megan lashed out with her best baseball swing with the rolling pin. It bounced off the body armour and sent a judder of pain up Megan’s arm, but it got their attention.
Megan backed up against the truck doors as they turned to look at her, expression turning ugly. Somehow her hands felt slick and she had a hard time gripping the taser, even with gloves on.
The soldier reached for something, but Oscar came barrelling around the truck and tackled to them to the ground. He clapped a hand around the soldier’s mouth and cried at Megan.
“Tase him!”
Megan fumbled with the weapon in thick gloves and discharged it almost accidentally. By some miracle it hit home and the soldier shuddered under Oscar, volts of electricity coursing through them.
A garbled screech tried to get past Oscar’s hand, but they collapsed before it got too loud.
Julia appeared once they were down, and started helping Oscar tape them up. Julia threw Megan the keys, who caught them with shaking hands.
Never again, she never wanted to do that again!
Megan turned to open the van. Her hands shook so much she dropped the keys twice before she even got them in the lock.
It took another few tries but she got the doors open.
She had to pull them to open properly, and saw almost exactly the same thing as she did in the police parking lot. Androids, packed in like sardines. Not all of them in uniform, but all staring forward.
Megan stepped back and found her words sticking in her throat, so Julia came to rescue.
“Everybody out!” she called in a calm, not overly carrying way. It worked and the androids trooped out in rhythm. Once there was space Oscar threw the solider in the back, barely fazing the androids.
Julia went to address the androids again and Megan reached for her radio. Her hands were still trembling, but she felt more in control.
“Van secured. Captain Hardass is talking to the androids. Over.”
“Nicely done,” the smirk was clear in Ivy’s voice. “We’re on our way. Over.”
Megan turned her attention back to the androids and Julia. Some of them were jogging past her into the city, but a large chunk of them had remained.
Oscar leaned out of the back of the truck and frowned at the group of androids.
“Not to be rude, but why are they still here?” he asked Julia, but one of the androids answered.
“Because we want to be.”
A male android stepped forward, Asian and with a muscular build, he eyed the three of them warily as his LED spun yellow.
“Sorry, why would you want to hang around here?” Julia asked, “And for goodness sake get over here! What if the guy in front looks in their mirrors?”
The androids moved to stand behind the van, but the one who spoke still looked warily at the humans. They jumped about a foot in the air when the rest of Android Allies appeared over the crest.
“Easy,” Julia was quick to pacify. “They’re with us.”
The male android fixed her with a hard glare. “I don’t even trust you.”
“Aaand who’s this?” Allison asked. Alex glared at Allison before looking at the android.
“Sorry about her,” Alex interrupted, ignoring Allison’s glare. “What’s your name?”
“Callum,” the android responded. “None of the others are deviant, but they seem to follow me.”
“Good to meet you Callum,” Alex beamed. “We’re going to blow this joint, whaddya say?”
“That wasn’t the plan!” Allison hissed.
“The plan was to get a truck and play it by ear,” Alex responded. “We’re also looking for two androids, an AX400 called Ella and a red haired PL600 called Paul.”
Callum went into thought.
“Not seen them. I can send word out,” he offered.
“Please do,” Megan jumped in, trying not to let desperation lace her voice.
Callum’s LED spun yellow and he closed his eyes.
As I go through this I realise that Alex is the most like my usual protagonists. If I hadn't wanted a change in pace writing Megan's POV Alex would have been the main character. For those who are curious, Callum's model is in the game, he is an HR400, or a male Traci.
Other Options Flowchart
(Megan) Comment on the pep talk- Compliment Allison. Agree with Oscar (would affect relationship)
(Megan) Say you're okay. Say nothing. Shrug.
(Megan) Be unwaveringly optimistic. Be pessimistic.
(Megan) Decline going to check the truck. (Allison would do it instead)
(Megan) QTEs on the knock. Can do it loud the first time(Megan) QTEs for the rolling pin and the taser. If the rolling pin fails it's not so bad as the soldier would notice her anyway. If the taser fails the soldier would escape and punch Megan before Oscar could restrain them again and they could be dazed. If rolling pin hit and taser failed Megan would have a black eye for the rest of the game. If rolling pin didn't work the solider would attempt to restrain. Rolling pin fails but taser hits, nothing changes.
(Megan) QTEs for the keys, fairly complicated ones to not drop them
