I Saw the TV Glow is such a uniquely, devastatingly queer story. Two queer kids trapped in suburbia. Both of them sensing something isn’t quite right with their lives. Both of them knowing that wrongness could kill them. One of them getting out, trying on new names, new places, new ways of being. Trying to claw her way to fully understanding herself, trying to grasp the true reality of her existence. Succeeding. Going back to help the other, to try so desperately to rescue an old friend, to show the path forward. Being called crazy. Because, to someone who hasn’t gotten out, even trying seems crazy. Feels crazy. Looks, on the surface, like dying.
And to have that other queer kid be so terrified of the internal revolution that is accepting himself that he inadvertently stays buried. Stays in a situation that will suffocate him. Choke the life out of him. Choke the joy out of him. Have him so terrified of possibly being crazy that he, instead, lives with a repression so extreme, it quite literally is killing him. And still, still, he apologizes for it. Apologizes over and over and over, to people who don’t see him. Who never have. Who never will. Because it’s better than being crazy. Because it’s safer than digging his way out. Killing the image everyone sees to rise again as something free and true and authentic. My god. My god, this movie. It shattered me.

A link design!!! For a story that’s solid enough in my head to possibly become a comic ehehe
some notes:
Link has been Heroing for some time now, with minimal success. He’s a bit grumpy.
he also has a bulky brown overcoat, but I haven’t figured out what it looks like yet so i didn’t draw it lol
the gloves are to hide his scar, but also help in the cold. Because this Hyrule is rather cold :)
The overtunics are both pretty new, which is the only reason they aren’t torn to bits. The same person who made them mended his pants and made his hat, which is why the patches match cloth in other parts of his outfit.
the scar on his face is from a lizalfos. I figured, if the Dilophosaurus in Jurassic Park gets to spit acid, then shouldn’t a lizalfos get to too? So it’s an acid burn. He’s lucky he dodged most of it!
I’m still figuring out how to accurately depict the scars, so they don’t look quite right yet! With research and practice I’ll get there!
the other scar I will not get into for plot reasons hehe

This is the same story the above Zelda design is for!! I’ve posted her design in varying stages before, here, here and here, but the story in the previous posts has changed a bit since!! There are also some really old doodles of Link if you (hehe) follow the links.
the above is Zelda’s formal dress. I designed it with a girl a little younger than her in mind, because she loses most of her wardrobe when she’s about 12! So I really ought to draw this on her younger self XD
Tumblr media
Finally, scrapped Ganondorf and Link designs!!!
don’t look into these too much as I’m only putting them here because I’ll never post them otherwise; they do not fit the story at all lol
Ganondorf is gonna be… really hard to design… I made him a very complex character and his personality is so intertwined with the story there is a lot to be taken into account XD
ummm that’s all for now!!! I doubt many people will read all this but feel free to send asks if you have questions nevertheless :D

The X trilogy + "psycho-biddy" influences
#x 2022#pearl#maxxxine#x series#strait-jacket#psycho#what ever happened to baby jane#horror#psycho-biddy#hagsploitation#made this whole big thing which i still might post eventually but. in terms of aesthetics. this abridged version is better lol#i'm not gonna finish the other post tonight but consider this a preview of sorts#i can't stop thinking about what if they leaned more into the 'hagsploitation' aspect of it all lol#i actually find it odd + off-putting that they start and end maxxxine with a bette davis reference#with a big significant psycho cameo at the bates motel itself#and there's not really any payoff for those allusions!!#i think if you're gonna try to tie into a legacy of older horror films you should do it in a sincere way#because that just felt like 'elevated horror' bonus points + nostalgia bait#anyway. it's fun to think about the potential it had + how all the building blocks exist within the narrative to do something interesting#and i am a 1960s hagsploitation subgenre apologist lol#what ever happened to baby jane? changed my brain chemistry the first time i watched it as a kid#so maybe i'm just nostalgia baiting myself making these connections lmao#but it could have been so good#it could have been the perfect synthesis of the shared themes across all three movies#but i don't think hagsploitation gets butts in movie theater seats like girlboss 80s nostalgia vaguely true crime related shit#oh wait also i guess calling psycho a hagsploitation movie is like. probably not 100% accurate#but it is though. it's not an inversion of the subgenre bc the subgenre didn't exist yet#but it builds up a mystery 'psycho-biddy' character only to reveal that she's not the murderer#which is also what happens in strait-jacket so i think it counts!!#+ psycho is directly referenced in all 3 movies so it’s a pretty clear influence on the trilogy as a whole

(Similar to my other poll about Bare: a pop opera but leaving it up for a week this time lol)
From an internet perspective at least, it seems like people are moving away from-Or at least becoming more critical of- sexual themes and explicit scenes in their movies and tv. And there has been a lot of discussion (I believe mostly on the internet but still) about children and teens being subjected to sexual imagery.
Makes you think if most people would stick their noses up at the subject matter. I personally think it could be a hard sell but worth it if they found the right devoted team with a vision, rather than any studio willing to have them

personal pet peeve but I hate when nerevar is depicted as some kind of wholesome himbo because like. my guy was a war general. he literally led a full-scale war against another culture for what are pre religiously charged reasons as well as being a member of a council which included like several experts on magic, war tactics, art, philosophy, engineering etc
like idk I just struggle to find any nerevar believable that isn't a bit smart and also a bit of a horrific war criminal

I Just Watched (10th May): The Lighthouse (2019)
Tumblr media
It was not my intention to see two Robert Pattinson films in the same year, but here we are! It’s not the first time I’ve seen him baring all either! 😆
The Lighthouse (2019) is a lot of things. It is an avant-garde picture filled with bleak horror scenes and fantasy elements that all get paired up with beautiful black and white imagery, haunting soundscapes, and a claustrophobic aspect ratio. It is a picture that tells many tales and at the same time tells nothing all at once, both through its dialogue and often trippy visuals. It is a picture that provides the viewer with many questions than answers, and it leaves them wanting more by the time it is all over.
Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson make a curiously fascinating duo, and each deliver captivating performances in their roles. Dafoe is the standout for me personally. His inflections and just the way he speaks in general is so well done. Pattinson is great too. The scene where he finally breaks and lashes out at Dafoe is a definite highlight for me.
Speaking of dialogue, I adore the language in this. The film is set in 1890’s New England, and every piece of dialogue throughout sounds like they all came straight out of that time period. Most modern films that take place in the 19th century usually don’t bother with using historically accurate dialogue. However, director Robert Eggers – a lover of history and folklore – actually did his research and used it in a unique and clever way that didn’t feel forced or out of place. It’s all very natural and authentic. Little details like that make me so happy!
The Lighthouse (2019) isn’t for everyone, mainly because of its quirky and experimental nature, but it’s definitely an interesting experience.
8/10

something interesting I think in cinema is how gendered the descent into violent madness is. generally, the man is cold, vacant, empty. he is violent in an emotionless way. I’m thinking patrick bateman, I’m thinking funny games. and yet the woman’s descent into madness is so full of emotion. it is a build up of feeling. its release is cathartic. you are rooting for her, you are empathetic for her, you understand why she does what she does. when you watch female centric horror films as a woman - such as the black swan, or may, or perfect blue, or possession, or phantom thread, or even pearl - you are always aware that in another world, they could be you. women’s violence in cinema is always subversive. male violence is often just a reflection of our reality.

one thing though, as much as i love ~70s cinema (and before) - the conceptualization, the imagery, the vibrancy, even the fantastic way of being very heavy handed with metaphors and allusions - i kind of, often, prefer that there's a greater value put on "natural" acting in ~recent cinema.
