a jew review of: nhl team happy hanukkah posts

good evening and chag sameach to my hanukkah-celebrating pals out there on hockeyblr. today i bring you: a non-comprehensive and entirely subjective review from one (1) jewish hockey fan of the graphics posted by various nhl teams in celebration of the first night tonight. i definitely missed some, and some teams didn't post any at all, so it's a bit patchwork. here we go.

vancouver canucks: this is an extremely serviceable graphic. love the blurred dreidels to give the effect that they are spinning. very funny. props for the detail that there is a shadow of the menorah on the ice. straightforward. icemenorah is a themeTM but some did it better than others and this is a classic. 7/10

carolina hurricanes: obsessed with what the canes have done here though i cannot comprehend it. the weird techno style textured background. the out of focus magen david around. THE HURRICANES. IN HEBREW. WITH THE LITTLE CANES LOGO THING I FORGET THE NAME OF ON THE HEI? INCREDIBLE. points for creativity. overall baffling vibes. 6/10.

pittsburgh penguins: this is just adorable. you hired someone to draw this. spectacular work, guys. it's giving a bit of 'we browsed the target hanukkah deco section for inspo' but it's too adorable for me to care. it's team themed, it's hockey themed, it's holiday appropriate. love everything going on here. they get points for doing what very few other teams are doing and remembering this is night one, so only one candle is lit. most everyone else is getting a bit a head of themselves. 9/10.

washington capitals: and here we have another edition of the icemenorah, with a minimalist twist. this graphic screams 'oh fuck wait is that tonight' which to be fair is also how i, a jew, felt about realizing tonight was the first night of hanukkah. could'a done more, but it's perfectly fine. 6/10.

new jersey devils: this fucks. it's got devils themes. it's got a cool style. it's got vibes. it's got: more hockey stick menorahs which i am always excited about. that shamash candle is a graphic design nightmare but other than that i am all on board. 8/10

vegas golden knights: i love the gold foil effect and that you remembered there was more to hanukkah than candles, that's nice, as is involving the other affiliates! however. where are the vibes. this is not the vgk wishes you a chag sameach, this is a greeting card i got on etsy. 6/10 just bc i KNOW you can do better. where's the neon, babes.

los angeles kings: oh this is fun. it's icemenorah: WITH A TWIST. the art style is cute, it's got plenty of hockey theme, it's also very obviously LA-y, i'm giving them points for this one. the shadow is insane but that's okay, it's ~stylistic. it's cute. 7/10. UPDATE: definitely AI. boo hiss. 0/10.

montréal canadiens: this is probably my favourite for sheer vibes. you got: levitating icemenorah. you got: action-shot candle lighting. you got: remembering this is night ONE. you got: the implication that the torch is the shamash candle????? you got: JOYEUSE HANOUKKA!!!!!!!! (and like happy hanukkah or whatever i guess). obsessed. it's so funny. it's amazing. 9/10.

Happy 1st night of Hanukkah to all that celebrate! Here’s the story of how Wolfstar got her first ear nick.

The incident happened when she was apprenticed in Duskclan, after doing poorly during a mock fight, Clearpaw (the blue/grey tabby tom in the first 2 pics) taunts Wolfpaw. After several incidents like this the two make an agreement to sneak out of camp and spar to see who was better.

Clearpaw had the advantage and would’ve won but he was smug and underestimated her, giving her the in to win. They got scraped up on bloody by the time she managed to pin him and win.

However Wolfpaw should’ve known that wherever Clearpaw is, Sparkpaw is sure to follow. The large red molly, angry her friend lost, ran out of her hiding place and grabbed Wolfpaw by the ear, ripping it in the process.

She probably would’ve done worse if Jaggedstar and Stoatfang hadn’t happened upon them. Enraged Jaggedstar grabbed Sparkpaw and threw her off her daughter.

Both Sparkpaw and Clearpaw were uninjured aside from scrapes and bruises, but Wolfpaw’s ear was bleeding heavily. Stoatfang and Greyclaw punished their respective apprentices heavily with unwanted chores and long lectures about the warrior code.

Jaggedstar lecture Wolfpaw for fighting and sneaking out, but was secretly pleased her daughter had managed to win and stand up for herself.

Happy Hanukkah! Hope you're doing well

Would you say being a zionist or supporting zionism is "picking a side" in the war? Sorry if it's a silly question, but I've noticed a lot of Palestinian or people related to palestinians on this site are understandably antizionist, even when they aren't antisemitic. I've been told I'm being somewhat hypocritical by claiming to be neutral and supporting zionism(which btw i only meant in a non-extremist way) . So I just wanna clear it up, bc I am against Israel's actions too.

I would say it's complicated. Zionism itself must be defined before you can say you do or do not agree with that term as applied to you. So, in general, Zionism is very broad. Quite simply it boils down to the recognition of Jews as the indigenous people of Israel and the right of said people to self-determine in their communities within their native land.

With regard to the war, I actually do not view Zionism as taking a side for or against Palestinian self-determination, freedom and dignity. I am a Zionist because I am a Jew, a part of the indigenous tribe of people connected for thousands of years to this land and this place.

But I acknowledge that whilst Palestinians are a recent identity and whilst they didn't undergo ethnogenesis in Israel, they've lived there for a long time and it's silly to expect that they wouldn't consider it their homeland as well. And I support that, I think that's OK -- IF it's not being levied as a supercessionist attempt to claim Arabs are the real indigenous peoples of Israel and Jews are just European invaders.

But Palestinians are our neighbors, for better and for worse. And we must find a way to coexist and live in peace, because we want an ally by our side, not an enemy at the gates. And unfortunately, our conduct has been veering hard from the precepts that tie our people together since we accepted the Torah at Sinai.

Yes, "El" was originally the "God of Banners." There is a lot of rhetoric in the Torah that approves of "crushing your enemies." But, as a people, as we moved toward Rabbinic Judaism, we must follow the lead of our forefathers and shed the harmful impetus of vengeance. There are also many verses in the Torah that promote compassion and good-will even toward an enemy.

I don't view Palestinians as my enemy. I view them as my neighbors. And I want to be a good citizen and advocate for prosperity and wellbeing for all who live in and around Israel, Gaza and the West Bank, and indeed in every place on Earth.

There is plenty of room within the confines of Zionism to condemn the actions of the Israeli government. Zionism does not mean that we unconditionally support the government. Zionism is about all of us Jews, as a whole entire people. So bad actors like Netanyahu are fundamentally acting against the interests of Zionists and Jews everywhere by causing harm and suffering where it is not warranted.

And that, along with forced military conscription in general, is a searing wound that has been inflicted on us and continues to be inflicted. And we are feeling those reverberations. It's spiritually harmful. (And chag sameach to you and yours!!! Happy Honk!)

Hanukkah. Fifth Night.

Tonight I hope for peace, for freedom, for compassion, for health, and for safe harbour for us all.

I write for what I hope and not for what I wish because the candles in the menorah are reminders and lack even the small magic of birthday candles. They remind us of the costs of oppression and of being oppressed, that miracles, at least sometimes, must be earned. So I do not make wishes on them. But I allow them to inculcate hope, especially the hope that I can find ways to make the world a better place.

Mum sent me a "hanukkah advent calendar" which is certainly a cultural artifact of a very specific American moment, but it was full of cat toys and the Cryptids adored them. They got the toys as I opened the windows, but once I had all eight out (I opened eight today since I'm traveling tomorrow) I put them on the bed and let them choose "favorites"; Deebs wanted the menorah, while Polk loved the feathers on the hamsa. I give it a couple of weeks before they've kicked/chewed them all to death, mind you. :D

Happy 4th night of Hanukkah!

Had my family over for fried chicken, latkes, and Brussels sprouts oven roasted in olive oil. And of course some chocolate filled donuts to finish. I also made some cinnamon brown sugar cookies.

I tried some additional toppings for the latkes other than sour cream and applesauce and got dill pickle relish, Tabasco Siracha (my fav!), homemade Apple butter, and a green olive and red pepper tapenade that was really good on them!

THIS IS SUPER IMPORTANT: So my menorah and candles are not arriving until the 27!!! I am currently in a whole nother country and I completely forgot about Hanukkah until yesterday, so I bought everything as quick as I could and asked to be sent as quick as possible but they're not arriving until the 27 what do I do

You get tea lights, check if they stay lit for an hour, then set them up like a chanukkiah (8 in a row plus one separately) and light them. This is, as far as I know, literally halakha. No need to panic! It's alright! It happens to the best of us! And these lil things solve the issue no problem

happy hanukkah, chag sameach everyone!!! here's a clip from far, far ahead in wriggle up on dry land, my ted lasso au where jamie's 15 and the groundsman's assistant when the story begins. at this point of the story he is 17 and he lives with ted - for. reasons. - and ted and roy have essentially ended up co-parenting him, which has been a learning process for everyone. this is their first real holiday season together, and the first time roy has decided to celebrate hanukkah of his own initiative (not with phoebe and his sister) in a long time.

The mulish determination that had carried Roy all the way through talking to Sarah and going to the little judaica store she’d given him the address of and getting everything set up disappears as soon as there’s someone else in the house. He hovers awkwardly near the doorway and watches while Ted and Jamie shuck off their coats and Ted nudges the kid to remind him to take his shoes off inside. They’ve both been in his house before, more times than he can count by this point, but somehow the experience feels new and unpredictable. Neither Ted nor Jamie seem to notice, chattering to each other about whatever they’d been talking about before they got here, but Roy can’t escape it. The feeling is loud and cloying and he can’t turn it off.

Just as Roy is about to conclude this entire thing had been a mistake and he should call it off right now, he realizes that the new arrivals have left him behind in his own entryway, moving on into the dining room where-

Well. Roy hurries after them and comes to an abrupt stop in the doorway. Ted’s got his hands tucked into his pockets and he looks at Roy with a warm, knowing smile that Roy resents on principle. Jamie is staring at the table, stopped in place like he can’t quite comprehend what he’s seeing. It’s an understandable reaction. A menorah was to be expected. Three of them is… Three of them is something else.

They’re lined up in a neat little row on the table, candles already placed in the farthest corners and the middles, a lighter laying nearby in anticipation of what’s coming next. The one on the left end is simple and traditional, the first one that Roy had grabbed. It reminded him of the one his grandparents had, the one that is probably in the window at Sarah’s house right now, already lit. In the middle sits a short menorah, a flat row of silver candle holders with the shamash slightly raised at the centre of them, and a colourful pattern on a panel behind them. Red pomegranates are set against a blue background and the whole thing had reminded him of Richmond. The last, on the right, is elegantly shaped silver metal, a trunk and the reaching branches of a little tree. It had taken Roy a long time to choose it. Dissatisfied with the options, he’d been about to give up and choose one at random when he’d spotted it, tucked away at the back of the shelf. As soon as he’d seen it, he’d known it was the one he wanted - on the way out of the store he’d thought to himself Do they even have trees in fucking Kansas? And then he’d been so irritated at what an insane thing that was to worry about that he’d nearly tripped over a crack in the pavement.

Finally tearing his eyes away from the table, Jamie glances over this shoulder at Roy. He looks confused, a little uncertain, like he’s got a question but he doesn’t want to ask it. The story he’d told about spending Hanukkah with his friend Ash’s family pops into Roy’s mind and he wonders if this is a setup Jamie recognizes, if he’s counted the menorahs on the table and done the simple math and realized what that meant. Then again, this is Jamie. That kind of conclusion is not one he can be relied on to reach himself, and so Roy is going to have to explain.

“That’s what we did,” Roy forces out eventually. His voice sounds thick and stony even to his own ears and he stops, swallowing hard before he tries again. The last thing he wants is to sound resentful, or angry, or any of the other things he knows he sounds when he’s emotional - embarrassed, this time. Anxious for their reactions, for this display of the thinness of his own life, his lack of substance that he’d needed to go out and buy these new and Googled it three times before he was sure he’d put the candles in the right end.

“In my family,” he says, faintly pleased that it comes out softer than before, gentler and less intense. “And in a lot of families. Don’t know about your friend Ash, but… But that’s what we did, and a lot of people do. Have one for… For everyone in the…” Roy waves a hand around, a vague circle indicating the room. His cheeks feel hot and he doesn’t know why this is so fucking hard to say. “In the immediate family. So. Y’know. Three.”

There. He’s said it and he’s explained and he didn’t pass out or die and nobody immediately laughs either so that has to be some kind of a good sign. Roy stares resolutely at the grain of the kitchen table. He can feel the eyes of the other two people in the room on him but he can’t bring himself to look over at them. Not quite yet.

Good evening everyone! It's been awhile since I last posted; a half of year, I'm pretty sure. Time really flies, huh? A lot has happened since then, a lot of personal things that really affected my motivation to create and write, both for this AU and just in general. When I did get some motivation back, I wasn't As into Legend of Zelda at the time, so I decided to give a little more time. Worry not though, this AU was always in the back of my mind!

That being said, I would like to say that I am not giving up on this AU. In fact, I came here to say I'm going to start working on it again :) There will be changes to the blog--both the theme, the banner, everything--since it's winter now. Think about it kind of like Spring Cleaning, but a little festive!

Since you last saw me, I've actually been rewriting and remoulding the story into something entirely different. The benefit of basically having exactly A Few pages done is that I'm able to rewrite plot points that, in retrospect, I found didn't fit anymore or I just didn't jive with. Or to fit newer information that I received from new Zelda games.

If you all want to, feel free to send asks about the AU, I encourage it! Although I encourage asks literally whenever, I want to see what you all want to know about the Links (and Zelda)! If the question contains spoilers, I'll drop a little hint instead! I'll doodle for it if it strikes me too, since I do need to draw them more, haha.

One final thing, for this post, is that I finally got and finished Echoes of Wisdom! That game's Zelda and Link are currently being designed right now! Their names will be Echoes (though, Zelda will just be called Zelda here) and Repose! I was really taken with EoW, and it helped me fill in something for the plot, so I absolutely had to throw her on the merry band of idiots gang (that is to say, she'll be joining the chain!)

Happy Hanukkah!

Rebecca is hosting a Hanukkah party tonight with a few of her friends. Everyone is so excited for sunset!

Each girl celebrates Hanukkah a little differently. Nancy and Amanda come from an interfaith family, where their father’s side is Jewish and their mother’s side is Greek Orthodox. Amanda prefers to celebrate just the Jewish holidays, while Nancy likes to explore both. Rebecca is a conservative Jewish girl, so it’s all Jewish holidays, all the time. Katherine’s family celebrates Christian and Jewish holidays secularly as a way to keep in touch with their family history, even though none of them are religious. Coming together tonight lets the girls talk about different perspectives and share new traditions. (And show off their new winter outfits, of course!)
