American to English translation for fic
So I read and write fanfic, as do lots of others, and I've noticed that when it comes to British shows or movies, Americanisms or American terms crop up often. It's mostly because most don't know we have specific terms for things in the UK, and I've seen references here and there before, but I've decided to write one of my own. Feel free to add to it tho! I'm gonna put it up on Ao3 too and any additions, I'll reference the tumblr and link them on Ao3 too.
AO3 link is here!!
Anyway, here we go I guess.
Some Americanisms to English-isms
Gas = fuel/petrol/diesel (we tend to specify the type of fuel the vehicle uses, diesel vehicle or petrol vehicle for example)
Gas station = petrol/fuel station
Gas court = petrol/fuel court, or sometimes forecourt (not often with this one tho)
License plate = registration plate/reg
Diner = cafe
Fast-food = takeaway (this is sort of interchangeable. McDonald's is called fast food, a meal from a pizza place that delivers is takeaway)
Motel = hotel
Side-note: We tend to use specific named hotel chains like Premier Inn (or Prem-Inn for short) or Holiday Inn or Travelodge. We also have Britannia Hotels and several others. If the fic is based in a specific place, local hotels or famous ones may be better options. For example, in Liverpool, we have The Shankly or Adelphi.
Cab = taxi or black hac for a specific type of taxi.
Side-note: These are what you see in BBC Sherlock, for example, and are a UK staple. They're less popular or common-place nowadays but there are dedicated taxi companies that use them. There's on in my town that operates until 4pm each day. They are also usually more expensive than a car taxi but they have oodles of space and you can have a pram/buggy kept upright rather than folded-down in them which is brilliant.
Cop = police officer
Side note: more informal, colloquial terms include "copper", "the fuzz", "tit-head" (because of the nipple hat okay, just look up the hat, it's hilarious), "bobby", "rozzer" (pronounced r-o-z-er not Row-zer), and "the bill" (there's an actual show called this btw. It can be a good reference for anyone writing crime fic in UK). There's more but those are the most common. Older terms do include "peelers" and "old bill".
Second side-note: the police have a whole host of terms, colloquial and slang that can be a great thing to include in fic, which I'll link a glossary of here. It's not all UK centric but cross-country policing is a thing so that may just be a boon imho. Also the short-hand acroynmns used are useful so here's a link to the Metropolitan Police glossary of those too!
Patrolman = constable or police constable
Antenna = aerial or TV aerial
Fall (season) = autumn
Bill = banknote or specifically "tenner", "fiver", "twenny" (not "twenty"). We don't have single banknotes like a dollar bill. We have pound coins
Dimes, nickels, etc = pound coin, two-pound coin, fifty-pence, penny, two-pence, five-pence, ten-pence, twenty-pence (link here about the coin currency)
Drug store = chemist or pharmacy
Optometrist = optician
Primary care physician = GP (general practitioner) here's a link about UK medical terms for doctors etc
Side-note: here's a link about medical terminologies etc between American and UK
Social security number = national insurance number
Liquor store = off-license or, specifically, Bargain Booze™
Liquor = spirits (usually)
Store = shop
Target, Walmart, etc = honestly, it's probably gonna be Tesco, ASDA, Morrisons, ALDI or Lidl
Superstore = supermarket
Shopping cart = shopping trolley or just "trolley"
Yard-sale = car-boot/car-bootie/car-boot sale
Attorney = barrister or solicitor (solicitors you go to for legal help, barristers tend to be involved in actual court matters, like a the Crown Prosecution Service), here's a link that explains it better
Janitor = caretaker
French-fries = chips (although McDonald's French-fries are just that, French-fries)
Intersection = crossroad
Highway/freeway = motorway
Interstate = usually an A-road or a motorway, we don't really have interstates here)
Overpass = flyover
Turnpike = toll motorway
Windshield = windscreen
Trunk of a car = boot or car boot
Hood of a car = bonnet or car bonnet
Truck = lorry
Sedan = saloon car
Blowout = puncture or flat tyre
Pavement = road
Sidewalk = path
Subway = underground (like the London Underground)
Drapes = curtains (though we do use "drapes" we tend to say "curtains" more)
Pacifier = dummy or "dodo" or "dodi"
Diaper = nappie or a pull-up (if its like underwear for toddlers)
Baby crib = baby cot (though we do use "crib", we tend to say "cot" more)
Baby carriage/pushchair/stroller = pram or buggy (more specific type tho, here's a link about the differences)
Trash/garbage can = bin, dustbin, rubbish bin
Garbage/trash collector = binman/binmen
Mail = post
Mailman = postman
Mailbox = postbox
The movies = cinema or pictures
Movie = film (less common nowadays with influence of Americanisms but I still use "film" and a lot of people my age and older do too (25+)
First floor = ground floor okay, it's the ground floor because it's on ground level
Sneakers = unless they're Converse, it's probably just "trainers"
Baggage = luggage
Purse (as in the bag) = handbag, or "purse" but that tends to be the thing you put your money and cards in then put in your handbag
Vacuum cleaner = hoover or a specific brand like Henry Hoover™, which you'll find we tend to just call Henry (though I have a John Lewis hoover I got from George, ASDA that I've named 'George' and yes, I do say "I need to use George in a bit to hoover" regularly)
Sweater = jumper or, if it buttons up it's a cardigan or cardi
Closet = wardrobe
Elevator = lift
Call collect = reverse charges
Schools = we have primary/infants (11yrs)and secondary/high school (11-16yo) with some high schools have sixth-form college (16-18yo) or actual independent colleges for the same ages
College = university
Semester = term
Vacation = holiday
Kindergarten = nursey/reception
Flashlight = torch
Wrench = spanner
Backyard = garden
Cookie = biscuits
Chips = crisps (like Walkers™ or Lays™ in the States)
Pants = trousers
Cottoncandy = candyfloss
Dude = bloke/fella/mate
John Doe = John Smith
Exhausted (tired) = knackered
Cell phone = mobile
Cell data = mobile data/4G/5G
Bathroom/restroom = loo/toilet (informal term "bog")
Thanks = cheers
Soccer = football
Y'all = "you lot"
Fuck off/hit the road/go away = bugger off
Some slang phrases too
Bits and bobs = stuff, usually random
Take the mick/mickey = making fun of someone or over-exaggerating
Bob's your uncle = there you go, basically
Bog standard = typical, run of the mill kind of deal
Gutted = feel upset, disappointed
Dull as dishwater = basically really, really fuckin boring
Chinwag = basically "shooting the breeze" or just having a talk/chat
.
If you have any others that you think of or want added, reblog and add em! Tags too if you'd prefer but reblogs would be easier ☺️

How to Name Fantasy Places (Without Pulling Random Letters Out of a Hat)
Worldbuilding is all about making things feel real—and names carry the weight of your entire world’s history, culture, and mystery. So here’s a foolproof method for naming places that actually feel like places.
Step 1: Decide What This Place Means to the People Who Named It
Every name tells a story. Ask yourself:
What did the first people to settle or discover this place notice?
What is this location known for?
Is it sacred, cursed, rich, desolate?
Examples:
A towering forest could be called Whispergrove (for the sound of the leaves or the myths around it).
A desert ravine where travelers vanish might be The Hollow Path.
Step 2: Choose a Naming Style (Consistent with Your World)
Think about the culture that named it. Do they use:
Compound words (e.g. Stormwatch, Ravenfell)?
Descriptive + noun (e.g. Blackmoor, Silverdeep)?
Old tongue or language rules (e.g. Eldrinor, Vaskhara)?
Functional or mundane names (e.g. Southfield, The Western Reach)?
Stay consistent within a region or people group. Language = worldbuilding.
Step 3: Use This Naming Formula When You’re Stuck
If your brain’s fried and nothing sounds right, here’s a go-to naming formula that always gets the job done:
[Adjective or Descriptive Element] + [Geographic Term or Feature]
Try words like:
Descriptive: black, silent, shattered, ancient, golden, hollow, crimson
Features: hill, pass, reach, coast, vale, hold, watch, spine, hearth, barrow, fen
Examples:
Ashfen – a burnt wetland
Crimson Hold – a fortress with a bloodstained history
The Broken Reach – a territory that collapsed after war
Frosthollow – a snow-laden valley
You can also reverse it:
Glenmor (Glen = valley, Mor = great)
Ridgewyn – (Ridge = feature, wyn = an invented or repurposed word suggesting wind or joy)
Step 4: Don’t Be Afraid to Steal from Real Life (and Twist It)
Real world etymology is your friend:
Latin roots: Aurum Vale (Gold Valley)
Norse/Germanic: Drakenfjord (Dragon Fjord)
Old English: Thorneby (Settlement of Thorns)
Mash these with your own invented words or blend them with existing ones to sound just unfamiliar enough.
Step 5: Keep a Masterlist
Once you’ve named a few places, keep a naming glossary. This keeps your language consistent and helps with world cohesion.
Bonus: Don’t Try to Be Clever Every Time
Not every place needs to sound mystical. A town named Bridgemarket or Eastmere can be just as immersive. Let some names be simple. That’s what makes the epic ones stand out.
TL;DR
What does the place mean to the people who named it?
Pick a naming style that fits your world.
Use: [Descriptive] + [Feature] = instant immersion.
Pull from real etymology and adapt.
Keep it consistent—and don’t overcomplicate.

goon | the hockey glossary for beginners
this was meant to just be something i could slide into my end notes but as usual i got a little overenthusiastic. you do not NEED to know any of this in order to read the hockey au, but if you're like me and enjoy Knowing Things, I'll keep this updated as chapters are added. i tried my best to keep this in laymans terms.
chapter seven
bar down: when the puck hits the crossbar and into the net Phil Kessel: Kessel is a three-time Stanley Cup champion who is sort of infamous for giving zero fucks about his diet — while the rest of the league has focused more and more on healthy nutrition there was a running joke for a while that Kessel just housed a dozen hot dogs in between periods to keep up his peak physical performance.
This was mostly hyped up by a Toronto reporter with a grudge, Kessel worked out a ton and could probably have done ten reps with any player on his team, but he leaned into the joke as well after one of his Cup wins. Ryker: Mark Rycroft currently works as an announcer for the Avs broadcast network, and played in the NHL previous to that, including a stint for the Avs (they like to bring back old players, half the staff between Altitude network and the front office seems to be previous players, at this point). He owns a liquor store in the metro area. In this ‘verse Buck totally hit him up for craft beer recommendations and Ryker came back at him with a six-pack of cherry cheesecake sours, then talked about it on air for like ten minutes during pre-game warmups.
Here's one of my favorite Ryker moments on the broadcast:
Luke Prokop: the only out player in pro-mens hockey in North America. He currently plays for the Nashville Predator’s AHL team. Lexi: Lexi LaFleur Brown, my favorite WAG of all time. She is married to former NHL player and current analyst for the Seattle Kraken JT Brown. Lexi’s bi and her husband is a vocal ally of the community. More than that, she’s got a doctorate in philosophy, and is hilarious and insightful (and she’s writing a hockey romance novel that I will definitely be reading considering she’s got the inside track to how insane and weird those men are).
chapter six
coast to coast: when a play carries the pick from deep in his own defensive zone all the way to the opposing teams goal Bears: The Hershey Bears are an AHL team, currently an affiliate of the Washington Capitals. Once a year, they throw a charity game (typically held around Christmas time) with a teddy bear toss (Sort of an homage to fans tossing their hats on the ice for a hat trick). Fans are encouraged to bring teddy bears or other stuffed toys to the game, and throw them on to the ice when the home team scores their first goal. The toys are then gathered to be donated. The Bears own the world record for most toys gathered in a single event. The Michigan: goal scored by a player either standing or skating behind the net, lifting the puck onto their stick, moving the stick (with the puck, which is even more difficult than it sounds) around the net to the top or corner of the net, and shooting the puck into the net. players in the nhl rarely pull this move (it’s a bit of a trick play) but when someone pulls it off it ends up in every highlight reel for a week. you can watch it in action here
chapter five
Tortorella: John Tortorella is the current head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers. he is simultaneously beloved and beloathed by fans and players alike for his hot-headedness and his inability to keep his mouth shut when he has An Opinion. he’s well known for benching players as punishment and has quite a few contentious relationships with former players and coaches in the league. as far as i can tell, he’s pretty genuinely well-liked in his current role, but that is sort of a new development for him. Eagles: The Colorado Eagles are The Avs AHL affiliate team Norris: James Norris Memorial Trophy, awarded to the top all-around defensive player in the league every year shutout: the q-word of the hockey world. similar to mentioning a no-hitter before a baseball game has finished, saying the word “shutout” when the opposition has yet to score on your goalie in the game is considered a sure way to invite the opposition to score. you don’t have to be superstitious, but you’ve gotta be a little-stitious Duchene: you may have noticed there was some extra vitriol for matt duchene in this chapter. i can promise you it’s justified. (it’s vagely justified) he played for the avs with the core who eventually went on to win a cup in ‘22, but he was having a Bad Time and performing like shit during an incredibly Bad Season (the Avs only recently shed the record for the least amount of points earned in a season), he was not getting on with the guys in the locker room, and he all but demanded a trade because he wanted to play for a cup contender. his trade was actually vitally integral in getting the avs the pieces that finally tipped them over the edge and made them champs, which is icing on the cake for me. i think this year was the first year since ‘17 that he wasn’t actively booed in Denver every time the puck touched his stick. (it was only about half the time, last season) although he managed to once again make himself the villain by ending the avs season in the second round of the playoffs. picking pockets: to be stripped of the puck without seeing the opponent coming penalty kill: (abbreviated to PK) when a team is assessed a penalty and are down a man, the players left shorthanded on the ice have to prevent the power-play from scoring. typically, a penalty ends when time is up OR the power play unit scores a goal, however when a major penalty is assessed, the penalty timer keeps going until it is up regardless of whether or not the power play scores. (ie: this is a risky as fuck move by tommy because he essentially created a circumstance in which half of the time they had left on the clock would be limited to defense, with very little opportunity to score. thankfully for him, doing something so blatant that the refs HAD to call it worked exactly like he wanted it to, and fired up his team.) Honey Stinger: energy snack. this specific sidebar in tommy’s thoughts is inspired by cale makar chowing down on one of these wafers on the bench and being caught by the broadcast doing it
Tumblr media
saucer pass: a pass with lift — rather than sliding along the ice this pass ends up in the air. these passes are harder to gather in and make controlling the puck more difficult
chapter four
too many men: refers to a penalty that results when, during a shift change, there are more players in play than the allowed five (plus the goalie) hatty: hat trick, three points scored by the same player in the span of a game. a natural hat trick is three goals scored by the same player consecutively bucket: helmet Bobby Blender: “[Coach Name] Blender” is a term used (usually by broadcasters) to describe the head coach moving players up and down the lineup with no focus on their typical line assignments. they typically do this just to try to get a spark, some chemistry going — this is a throw everything at the wall and see what sticks scenario. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, but it can sometimes be specifically designed to fuck with the opponents, who have played certain configurations and watched game film (and therefore designed their strategy) around the “normal” line setup crease: sometimes referred to as the paint, or blue paint. blue semi-circle directly in front of the net where the goaltender defends. this is the goalies domain, and they get very protective of it when someone is encroaching on their space. consider it a tendy-bubble sweater: in ice hockey, the jersey players wear is called a sweater. the two words are interchangeable but if you ask a hockey purist about their jersey they WILL speak to you as though you’ve lived under a rock your whole life Travis Dermott: In 2023 The NHL had dispatched a memo to teams before the season reiterating its ban on altering on-ice gear for warmups and practices to reflect theme nights. This was touted as removing distraction from the game but was very clearly a direct response to a loud group of anti-LGBTQI+ fans/sponsors. Quite a few players and coaches made noise about this, and the company who produces rainbow Pride tape hinted that one team had bought an entire case of it in a likely move to protest this decision, but all it took was one player — Travis Dermott — defying the ban by playing with Pride tape for the league to walk back the ban. He’s a fucking legend.
chapter three
Edmonton bubble: covid protocol sent the teams to two hub cities to play out the rest of their seasons after play was paused in mid-march of 2020. teams lived in and played in either Edmonton (western conference) or Toronto (eastern conference)
chapter two
flippers/jibs/partials: dentures. hockey players loose teeth. often. they take pucks to the face, sticks to the face, have nasty falls to unforgiving ice, take a shoulder to the face accidentally (or on purpose even though headshots are super not legal within the parameters of hitting in hockey), etc all the damn time, and sometimes that results in them losing teeth. some of them prefer to rock the look, others like to wear dentures, some get implants (and sometimes those implants ALSO get knocked out, like Tavares literally a few days after getting them).
chiclets: teeth. most often referred to this way when players have lost said chiclets and are trying to find their white teeth on choppy ice with a white backdrop
crosscheck: act of obstructing an opponent illegally using the stick held horizontally in both hands
the infamous Seguin tweet:
Tumblr media
chirp: trash talk
barnburner: high scoring game
call-ups: players who play for the affiliate team can be brought up to fill spots on the team. for poor-performing teams, at the end of the season there is an opportunity for some players to play up and try to prove themselves at the NHL level. this sometimes leads to good teams getting the surprise of their life when AHL players play the best game of their lives. other times, a lineup of AHL players get their asses handed to them. and sometimes the AHL players lean into their roots (there is a LOT more fighting in the AHL, they tend to be more physical in general) and just beat up the other team for the entire game
sidney crosby’s jock strap: i’m just gonna leave you with this article’s headline and you can decide how much you need to know: Sidney Crosby Admits He's Been Wearing Same Jock Strap Since High School
chapter one
four-point game: within the division (pacific, central, atlantic, metropolitan) teams play each other four or five times - a total of 26 interdivision games -- so the "points" system that the league uses to rank teams throughout the regular season (0 for a loss, 1 for an OT loss, 2 for a win) are called four-point games - ei the ranking in the division determines your spot in the playoffs, so a victory against a divisional team means that while you pull ahead 2 more points they "lose" 2 points within the division.
wildcard: when a team cannot clinch 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in the division, they still have the opportunity to earn a playoff spot if they earn enough points to be top 8 in the conference. everything is a points battle to win within your conference and your division.
rounds: first/second/third round refers to playoffs - the first two rounds are in the division, and the third round decides the conference champion who will play for the stanley cup (no not that one)
pipes: the net, or goal, has two vertical frames in the front that are called the pipes (if a puck deflects off of these you may hear this referred to as hitting the iron). fun fact: there are some goalies who thank their pipes and crossbar (the top part of the frame) every time the puck deflects off of the net instead of going in
stripes/zebras: these are not necessarily derogatory terms for referees, but you will rarely hear these terms used in a fond context, because even when a call goes in a teams favor, fans in general love to shit on the refs. this is a time honored tradition that will never change.
linesman: a specific position of officiating that mostly involves watching the center and blue lines
blue line: this is the border of a zone. the middle of the ice has two blue lines on either side of the center red, which is the neutral zone. when you are in possession of the puck behind your blue line, you are playing defense. when you are in possession of the puck behind the opponents blue line, you are on offense.
icing: offensive teams are required to pass the red center line if they want to shovel the puck to the opposing goal line and chase it. if they do NOT pass the center line before doing so (or can not chase the puck down faster than the defending team) the play is called dead and the puck is returned to the defending zone of the attacking team
affiliate team: all nhl teams have a 'farm system' where they develop players up to the nhl level - within each team organization there are affiliates where nhlers can be brought up to play at the nhl level, sent down to condition, or play games while rehabbing after an injury. some players play up and down a system for years before catching a break, or move from affiliate to affiliate without ever really reaching the nhl level
enforcer: this is an unofficial role in ice hockey - their job is to deter dirty or violent play by the opposition, but sometimes this results in dropping gloves and punching a dude in the face a few times for apparent slights. it can also just mean throwing their body around, slamming opposition into the boards and the glass, catching someone not paying attention and knocking them on their ass. there are LEGAL hits and hits that will incur a penalty, and the outcome of a game can sometimes depend on which one of those an enforcer finds themselves choosing to act out
boards: the low walls that mark the boundaries of the rink. above this is the glass that keeps pucks being shot 90+ mph from careening into a fans face. there is also netting above the glass
lines: in game conditions, a team consists of four 'offensive' lines, 3 defensive pairs, and a goalie. the lines consist of a 3 forwards: a center and a right and left winger. typically these lines are fairly set throughout the season with the same three players, but based on overall performance and sometimes injury, forwards can be moved up and down a line - they are typically ranked 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th based on how high a performer they are. your first line is going to be the most trusted to make plays and score goals, your fourth will include more role-players who are scrappy or particularly good at hemming in the opposition in their defensive zone
shift: players rarely spend more than a minute out on the ice at once, and lines shift on and off the bench throughout the game - TOI or time-on-ice is often a measure of either: how trusted and/or conditioned a player is, or how tired a player is likely to be after being stuck in their defensive zone for an extended period of time. a long shift is often used to the advantage of an attacking team - if you can tire out the opposition it's a lot easier to pass back and forth until you find a lane to shoot the puck at the net
snow shower: colloquial term for chumming the ice while slowing/stopping, often for the express purpose of pissing someone off by aiming the spray of ice at them
hockey hug: typically this is referenced when a member of one team is physically restraining one from another team to prevent them from joining a scrum
face-off: when a play is whistled dead, based on the result of the dead call the refs will have a forward from each team wait for a puck to drop from a designated circle. possession is an advantage in hockey, so the goal of this is to shovel the puck to your team once it drops
unsportsmanlike: 'unsportsmanlike conduct' is a penalty called fo disrespectful behavior that is rude, unpleasant, or unprofessional. This usually begins as a two minute penalty and then escalates to a five minute major or game misconduct because hockey players are hotheads and refs have fragile egos. This is not to say that EVERY little infraction will result in this call - on hot mikes and sometimes even on broadcasts (and DEFINITELY at a live game) players and refs can often be heard swearing at each other like crazy.
the box: the penalty box is where the refs send bad boys for timeout. this results in the team who has received a penalty being short a man, and the other team receiving a power play where they have an extra man and therefore a much better chance at scoring
shorthanded goal: rare and fun goals that occur when the team who is down a man scores during the time they are killing off a penalty game
stars: not to be confused with the dallas stars (boo); at the end of every game three stars are chosen. this is an arbitrary selection based on any number of factors, but typically goes to the top performers in a game. although these are chosen by someone associated with the home team, sometimes if the opposition had a particularly good performer one of the stars will go to an opposing player
the Gordie Howe: in this fic I'm referencing a Gordie Howe hat trick, which is a goal, an assist, and a fight -- the truest form of hockey player. The name is a reference to a hall-of-famer who is renowned for his all-around game.
breakaway: when the player in control of the puck has no opponent between himself and the net except the goalie

How do bull riding scores work? The extent of my knowledge on the subject is something something 8 seconds -🧚‍♂️
Ok so some background first...
Quick glossary: "Roughstock event" is the term for these kind of events where you ride a bucking animal, whether it's a bull, a bareback bronc, or a saddlebronc. Naturally, "roughstock" is a bucking animal. "Rider" is self-explanatory.
Roughstock events are all generally scored the same way, with some added specifications for specific events, which I'll get to later. For general scoring, since these rules are applicable to roughstock events across the board, I'm not gonna refer to just bullriding but roughstock events as a whole. So you won't see "bull" much in here.
Riders get to pick their roughstock, and the order of who picks first is determined by either by drawing lots or by pulling names from hats, though sometimes this is suspended and someone is picked to go first (such as a rodeo where a well-known rider is returning after an absence due to injury or something, sometimes a rider like that is allowed first choice because he wants a rematch with the roughstock who broke him).
With that covered...
In order to QUALIFY for scoring you have to last 8 seconds on the roughstock. If you don't last the full 8 seconds, you don't score.
Scoring is done by a team of two judges (though sometimes four--get to that in a second). The judges judge you out of 25 (2x25 for a maximum score of 50) and then judge your roughstock out of 25 (2x25 for a maximum score of 50), and then their numbers are added together to find your actual resulting score. THEY WILL ALSO SCORE THE ROUGHSTOCK BASED ON THEIR PERFORMANCE. The best possible score you can get is 100 (a 50 score for you, a 50 score for your roughstock). When four judges are used instead of two, it's because two of the judges judge you and the other two judges judge your roughstock.
NO-SCORE is when you fall off the roughstock before 8 seconds. No-scores often average from the 20s to the 40s, as the only thing being scored is the animal's performance (how hard and fast they're bucking, aka how difficult of a ride they gave). This is why riders will pick difficult animals--even if YOU'RE chucked off, hopefully your animal will score high enough that you aren't the lowest of the tallies. And if you stay on, your score goes much higher than an animal who hasn't got their arse in it. On rare occassions someone might get bucked off at 4 seconds and get a no score but their animal gives them a score of 45 or some shit, and someone might last the full 8 seconds but their animal gives one tiny kick and doesn't buck again and they only score a 30 (this is most common in bronc riding as bulls don't usually do this).
Now, for rules...
You must stay on the FULL EIGHT SECONDS to score.
You must hold on with ONLY ONE HAND.
If your free hand at any point touches the animal, your own body, or your equipment, you will be disqualified and get a NO-SCORE.
If your roughstock has a poor perfomance, you may be offered the opportunity of getting a RE-RIDE. Not every rodeo does this, and even if they do the chance of one is always at the discretion of the judges, so never account for a re-ride. Pick an animal you think will give you a fight and a good score.
In roughstock horse events (saddlebronc and bareback bronc) your spurs must remain OVER THE HORSE'S SHOULDERS until your horse hits the ground on the first jump out of the chute. This is called "marking out" your horse. If you don't do this you'll be disqualified and get a no-score. Bullriders don't need to mark out their animals, but still often wear spurs, both for tradition and also because spurring the bull increases your score as it makes him buck harder.
Saddle bronc and bareback bronc is judged on not just your ability to stay on the horse, but also your ability to control your horse and your SPURRING TECHNIQUE (spurring from the front of shoulder, then behind the saddle, back and forth with the movement of the horse's bucking) during the performance. If you want to score well, you have to maintain this spurring through the entire 8-second ride. Speaking from experience, roughstock horse events require much more skill than bullriding.
This one's more a recommendation, but don't die in the arena. At least make it back to the chute first, helps with cleanup.
Not a rule, just breaking a myth: bucking animals don't buck because anything is tied around their genitals. They buck because it's their instinct, and because they're rewarded for it. Roughstock events use something called a flank strap, which is basically just a rope, that's tied around the animal's body where their hind legs meet their torso--this is often what people claim is tied around their genitals, but it's not. It doesn't hurt them at all, and it doesn't even make them buck. What it DOES do is make them kick their legs straight out instead of sideways so that they don't injure a dismounting rider or hurt themselves by landing on a leg while it's bent and breaking it, and it also gives them a point to specifically focus on so they provide more power to their bucks (for comparison, think of it like half-arseing a throw of a baseball without a target versus aiming to throw at a specific target). They still buck without the flank strap.
Also these animals are very well taken care of. The most beloved and famous athletes of rodeo aren't the riders, it's the animals. See how beloved Bushwacker was. Muhammed Ali of rodeo.

Historical Korean Words Glossary
I am writing and have written quite a few Historical Korean fanfictions and so this post is a glossary for all of the different words that I leave untranslated. I do put all of the words I use in a fic at the bottom, but this is a big list of all of the ones I use and some pictures for reference. I will update this if I add a new word to a new fic.
None of the pictures are mine and I pretty much just found them on Google images.

FOOL's MATE Update Post #6
Master Post  Last Update
School Date: Fall, Term 9, Week 7
Props & Costumes
I preordered TRANSFORM a bit ago, so that should be shipped at the end of the month or the beginning of next month. I also started to finish gathering props I want for the set that I need to order from Japan. I really just need some keychains (Jackalope, Haruka, Muu, Mahiru, Kazui & Kotoko) and an Es/Jackalope acrylic stand. So if you have any of those you would like to sell, DM me. I'm also thinking of commissioning a like minded individual, if he dose commissions, to make a set piece.
I started to put together some costume stuff. My plan is to have 3 costumes. The first is a simplified Es cosplay. It'll be somewhere between what the hallucinations costume and their actual design. None of the gold details and maybe I'll get a hat. The second is the original costume I was planning; Mikoto's outfit in MeMe. Then the third is his main outfit minus the straight jacket. That's just an extra costume for if I end up having to shoot in the studio for multiple days. I also just need the shoes and shirt for this.
Set
So a bit ago, my docu professor asked if I wanted to use any of the criminal justice rooms for a set. At the time, I had no plans to. But I got to thinking, what it the intro and outro are formatted similarly to the intros in "From the Earth to the Moon". If you haven't seen it (please watch it, it's really good), Tom Hanks walks in from out of frame and walks towards the camera while talking about the premise of the episode. So I was thinking, what it I do something like that using one of those rooms as a set.
For some background info, my school cares a lot about ambiance. So all of the specialized rooms (and the medical wing) are designed to look like what that room would look like in the field. So the criminal justice department has a "forensics lab" that I could use.
I also pretty much have permissions for the studio I want already since I'm choosing to do it on a Saturday. I work in our equipment room, so I also have access to all of the equipment and can unlock the studio door myself.
I'm also hoping my best friend can participate since he's a criminal justice drop out (he didn't feel safe with that degree). So he will be able to provide some commentary from that perspective.
Staffing
I'm staring to work on staffing. This includes both on and off set staff. So far, I only have one person set in stone which is Kyle. Kyle is one of my classmates, but he's also one of my coworkers. So I'm "forcing" him to be my Production Assistant (PA) for when I'm filming in the studio.
Part of this is looking for people to commission for both art and music. So I've been slowly DMing people on my list.
Organization & Paperwork
I reorganized parts of the Milanote document. I've also updated the source sheet. I've also started to make a glossary of terms used in the documentation, posts and docu itself. Comments are on to allow others to request words or acronyms they've seen me use. Comments will be wiped once I add whatever its suggesting.

@flashfictionfridayofficial prompt
A Bad Time to Remember the Past
I wasn't planning on putting this guys perspective up yet, but it seemed to fit for the prompt, so I hope you enjoy!
Warnings: Discriptions of medical procedures, violence, blood, burning skin, laceration, and dismemberment.
@wyked-ao3 (a bit more on the villain of my story. He now has a proper name! Albrecht)
Glossary:
(In case you are curious about any of the terms in the medical procedure)
Topical Benzocaine: a gel spread on skin to numb before injections.
Articaine: a type of numbing agent injected locally in tissue to numb an area.
Epinephrine: used in local anesthesia to increase the duration of numbness by constricting blood vessels in the area and preventing the local anesthesia from being absorbed by the blood stream as quickly.
Buccal: the gum tissue covering the outer side of teeth.
Palatal: tissue over the top of the mouth on the inner side of the teeth.
Maxila: upper jaw
Nerve block: an injection that targets higher on a nerve branch to numb more tissue at once.
Infiltrations: injections that target a specific area and numbs the nerves directly adjacent to the injection by targeting the approximate location.
Now, back to the story.
Topical benzocaine followed a minute after by 2 carpules of Articaine HCI 4% 1:100,000 epi. Infiltrations for the buccal and a nerve block for the palatal side of the right maxila. Within minutes he’d watched as the surgeon took out a scalpel and carefully cut gum tissue down to the bone and gently peeled it back as the patient lay, mouth open, not even flinching. Then the drill had come, and with a whir of mechanical power, the bone was carefully bored down to expose the gaping sinus.
Of all the things that Albrecht had been forced to observe in his mandatory job placement hours, this was the one that really stood out to him. It was fascinating what a little chemical compound could do to dull the senses. He’d even been able to hold a mundane conversation with the man about his line of work while the surgeon scurried off to attend some other matters.
Another wave of explosions rocked by him. Albrecht’s head screamed in pain as that long forgotten memory snapped back into the recesses of his mind where it belonged. With both armies cowering in the darkness, he should have been on the cusp of his victory, the whole world bathed in beautiful darkness by his machines. Yet here he stood, recalling the memories of a child, a fool who didn’t understand the meaning of his own destiny.
Looking about him in confusion Albrecht’s teeth gnashed at the husks of his elite soldiers, boiled in their own skin at the shine of an artificial sun. Ever calculating, he could already see that what remained of his force wouldn’t last long after such a devastating attack. Ten blasted years of preparation… all for something like this? The fangs under his mask ached as he fought for control of his raging mind. His careful planning should have seen him to the end, in the way that it always had.
The power coursing through his veins spiked as the pieces of his strength once gifted to his thralls all began to converge back into him in a wave of sickening pressure. The feeling blinded him, and for the first time in his long life, Major Albrecht lost his ever firm grip on reason. Head snapping towards the source of his misfortune, he narrowed his eyes and clenched his fists.
Using his powers, the Major smoothly dropped into the shadows and quickly traveled in their protection until he came upon the small vehicle, still driving away at a speed far beyond its natural means. There were four, no five of them, as far as he could tell, but it made no difference. They would all be dead soon enough.
With an enraged roar, Albrecht materialized in the shadow of the car and dug his teeth into the little warlock at greatest fault for this downfall. The man yelped in pain and raised one hand to secure the hat on his head before using another to push Albrecht away so he could stop the bleeding. He had no intention of letting him live.
A glimmer of something shiny peaked out from underneath, but he had little time to dwell on it as a stake was driven almost into his heart. Whirling around on the would-be attacker, the Major sunk his claws deep into their forearm, tearing through it with a growl of surprise at the strangely wooden texture. He grinned in satisfaction as a sharp hiss of pain rang out from whatever the thing was. It still felt pain, so even if it wasn’t human, he could still break it.
Half drunk on this strange ecstasy, he almost missed the smell of steel. His mind suddenly flared with a sense of danger, and he pulled away as a shot rang out, hitting the side of his helmet and exposing part of his face to the blasted false sun.
Like a bucket of boiling water, the pain brought him back into focus, and Albrecht immediately retreated into the shadows, taking the limb he’d managed to sever with him. With his armor damaged even this much, he wasn’t fool enough to risk an end to his plans even with his spiked blood lust.

Note: The procedure mentioned at the beginning of the chapter is for a sinus lift to increase the bone level enough to place a dental implant.

Your MAGA-to-normal translator.
Tumblr media
September 12, 2024
Right-wing weirdos communicate by means of linguistic constructs that may sound like English, but are essentially another language altogether. MAGA cult members often employ these words as dog whistle pejoratives targeted at anybody not in their ideological bubble. So, as a public service for those of you trying to figure out what in tarnation these red-hat idiots are talking about, we herewith present a glossary of MAGA terminology.
Antifa — A mythical militia group of bloodthirsty radical leftists that is responsible for every undesirable event that happens in America.
Critical Race Theory — MAGAs prefer to define this academic concept that racism is embedded in our legal systems and policies as basically Black history. They also consider it vitally important to prevent school children from knowing about it. Especially America's legacy of slavery.
DEI — To cultists, these initials don't mean pursuing "diversity, equity and inclusion," but rather employing people of color or women (both by definition unqualified) with bad results sure to follow. For example, when Silicon Valley Bank collapsed in 2023 due to a classic bank run by its customers, right-wingers said the bank’s focus on DEI was the reason. Lately, however, they've turned DEI into an all-purpose MAGA synonym for the N-word, as when Vice President Kamala Harris is referred to as a "DEI hire."
Make America Great Again — Shorthand for "Trump is our nation's heaven-sent savior!"
Pro-life — Forcing women to give birth, even if it kills them. Or, as Rep. Jahana Hayes of Connecticut explained, referring to a Republican abortion ban, "This has always been about controlling women’s bodies and criminalizing healthcare for women in need.”
Right to Work — In theory, laws protecting workers from being forced to join a union (which is already illegal). But really, according to the AFL/CIO website, laws making it harder "for working people to form unions and collectively bargain for better wages, benefits and working conditions."
School Choice — Despite high-flown rhetoric about freedom and parental rights, this phrase actually refers to the longstanding conservative goal of destroying public education and transferring taxpayer money to private (Christian) schools.
Voter Fraud — Although its actual occurrence is rare, invariably the root cause whenever a Republican loses an election.
Woke — A universal descriptor for anything MAGAs don't approve of. Such as when Bud Light hired a trans woman to promote their low-calorie beer. See also: woke mind virus.
Following the time-tested procedures of propaganda, Republicans repeat these terms over and over, hoping to influence and manipulate us ordinary, everyday Americans. It doesn't work, of course. Because we're, well, normal.

Hi! I just started listening to midst, and I wanted to ask if your wiki pages for the episodes has the art from the videos? (And of they're spoiler free) It's far more convenient for me to watch without looking at a screen, but i don't want to miss all the cool art!
Welcome to the Fold!
We do not have a collated gallery of art from the illustrated video versions at this time because we do not currently have dedicated articles for each episode thus do not have a natural location to house such a large gallery gracefully. One of the biggest factors in of not having dedicated episode articles has been lack of editor resources (i.e., those with time to create and maintain such articles). We have a single episode list at this time, but that also does not provide what you are looking for in terms of the art.
Nevertheless, all of our articles are NOT spoiler-free, and this includes our Midst coverage such as the character articles, glossary, locations article, and so on. All articles, for Midst and otherwise, are updated up to the latest releases as soon as an editor has time and mental bandwidth to do so. I advise to always assume that spoilers will be present in all places in an article, including the leads and infoboxes, for all topics we cover.
To take off my admin-managing-the-socials hat for a moment and speak personally, I myself listen to the episodes twice because I find it easier to listen to without looking at the screen—and also because I'm impatient and the podcast-only version releases hours earlier. I do sometimes, before or after replaying through the whole video scrub through the episode manually to take a(nother) look all the art. It's not necessarily an elegant solution, but that's the method I use and the best advice I can give at this time.

Glossary Index: Great RPG Mechanics #RPGMechanics: Week Nine
I love over-produced rpg books, I love chunky rpg books, I love beautiful rpg books. But more than anything else I love books that actually work at the table. Books with sensical organization, clear call outs for information, important rules repeated, and with key references gathered together. There are games that I love, but in spite of their presentation. I’m not going to name names– but there’s one big indie title I ran for two and half years straight and every single session I couldn’t find key info.
A few years ago I applied for a job involving checking indexes (I didn’t get the position, last in a long series of those rejections). But one of the best parts of preparing for those interviews was discovering Nancy C. Mulvany’s great Indexing Books. It’s a dynamite read for anyone with any interest in how books are indexed. It’s a practical and illuminating volume. (For a deeper history of the index, see also Dennis Duncan’s Index, a History of The).
RPG Indexes are vital to me when I’m trying to use a book at the table. I die a little inside every time I flip to the back of a game I’m running and find them missing. People who make rpgs, playbooks, character sheets, etc need to think about how these things actually get used.
Which brings me to the wonders of the glossary index. I first encountered this in 13th Age, my favorite d20 emulating fantasy rpg. I adore 13th Age– especially for the smartness of how it is put together. The glossary index there contains a lot of elements– ones smartly chosen. For example what an attack bonus is and how to calculate it, what it means for a spell to be a battle spell, how the different range bands are read, etc. But my favorite bit– and the one which I often go to is the definitions of the different conditions. There are nine of them (few than a lot of other games (see Mutants & Masterminds)) but I can never exactly remember what they can do.
The 13th Age Glossary Index points you to where you can find the info and gives you a quick answer if you’re just looking for a basic point. It’s also extraordinary well-written, tight and yet echoing the great authorial voice of the rest of the book. It had to have been a ton of work, but it is amazing. I don’t need this for every book, but for core books, it’s a definite value add. I hope the new Trail of Cthulhu 2e from Pelgrane also uses this approach.
The other recent rulebook which does this is the amazing Apocalypse Keys from Rae Nedjadi and Evil Hat. It uses color and a small sideline to help call out the glossary entries. It’s great and a welcome addition to a game with a large set of moving parts. It’s also a great way to get a refresher when you go back to read through the game when you go to play it again after a break.
I remember the extensive front of the book glossary and terminology guides which filled White Wolf core books from the 1990s on. Leaden and filled with nonsensical terms and ideas– a road bump to actually getting to the rules and the text. You’d be forgiven for just ducking out when you saw like five pages of terms, maybe split into sub-categories. Does these have to come at the front? Maybe we could have placed them as an appendix? Is it that intimidation an attempt at legitimacy?
In any case a glossary index, like those in 13th Age and Apocalypse Keys, is a crafted and smart tool. It comes from people playing and thinking about what people would need to look up at the table. It’s great and I know several modern rpgs which I wish would have had one. Star Trek Adventures, I’m looking at you….
