Qunlat 1/??: Introduction

First dive into canon Qunlat! I’ll be starting with a bit of history and background on constructed language creation, what I think the strengths and weaknesses of Qunlat are, and how they likely came about. 
Note: This post and all others in the series will contain image alt-text that includes optional side-material. It's not necessary to read to understand the main text, but it does contain spicy details like "How old is Sten?" and "who could the Witch-King of Angmar have been defeated by, if the prophecy about him had been written in Qunlat?"

People have always been making new languages–ever come up with a secret code between friends, siblings, or partners? Congratulations! You’ve dabbled in making a new language. 
Constructed language creation goes back many centuries–usually for religious use, such as Hildegard von Bingen’s mystical use of her Lingua Ignota. In the 18th and 19th century, an interest in language reform and international communication created attempts at more “logical” and “universal” languages like Esperanto, Volapük, Ido, and Novial. Constructing new writing systems also has a long and successful history–Hangul is used by 81 million people! The Cherokee syllabary, wholly created by the singularly dedicated Sequoyah, is still in use today! 
But for our purposes, the story starts with a fellow named Tolkien.

As a historian, linguist, and big ol’ nerd who wanted to write a mythological epic, Tolkien famously built the elven languages of Middle Earth first, and then folded the rest of the world around them. He also produced limited amounts of Khuzdul (dwarvish), Adûnaic, Rohirric, Entish, and the Black Speech, creating a rich and alive-seeming world in the process.
Ever since him, big ol’ nerds have been influenced by this. Most constructed languages since have flourished in the hobbyist space of “conlangers”, folks like me who do this for fun. And oh boy, is it fun. Here’s a sample of an original language I’ve created:

But the most well-known conlangs sit at the intersection of art and commerce: languages constructed for mass media. These have a unique set of constraints, which will explain a few things about Qunlat. Yes, I promise, I haven’t forgot about Qunlat. I’m just excited to talk about my hobby.
When Star Trek made the jump to the big screen, James Doohan threw together some words that linguist Mark Okrand eventually transformed into the Klingon language. Doohan wasn’t really focused on making a usable language, he just wanted something that sounded right–it had “phonaesthetics” that matched the audience perception of the Klingons. This created something unfamiliar to English speakers, requiring you to make guttural sounds that most dialects of English never touch. Phonaesthetics were also among Tolkien’s leading principles with his languages–Quenya was influenced by the sounds of Latin and Finnish, Rohirric by Old English, and the Black Speech by the extinct Hurrian language. To him, these had certain associations that informed the character of the language’s speakers.

Phonaesthetics are usually priority number one in constructed languages that appear in mass media. While many modern projects will hire professional linguists to create something robust and to instruct actors on how to speak their lines, this isn’t always the case. In fact, it’s a very recent development. 
Mostly, constructed languages have been the province of some jobbo in the writer’s room or sound department, who has fifteen other things they have to be doing. They create something they think sounds good, and then send it off in the script. When the conlang is plonked down in front of an actor, they may not be given any direction on pronunciation, because nobody in the room has been given a pronunciation guide.

All this is to say: Many constructed languages in media are produced very quickly, they’re poorly-documented, and they’re often performed by people who haven’t been coached on their use. Those that survive are often passed through multiple hands, which may lead to refinement of the language, or artistic direction may be lost.
Qunlat has a lot of the hallmarks of this sort of language. So does Elvhen, but I’m only passingly familiar with it. Qunlat, though. It has a very simple, very Indo-European language structure, which primarily functions in ways English considers “default”. 
This is very common when an English-speaker makes a constructed language without a lot of practice: you write what you know, after all. And because most people never have to think too hard about their native language, they recapitulate the bits they think are vital, shave off a lot of the complexities that they don’t want to deal with, and never replace them with anything else. If a complex sentence does rear its head, something is slapped together ad-hoc. There are specific examples I can point to throughout the series that fit these patterns.
The phonaesthetics of Qunlat also have the hallmarks of a project that’s passed through many hands, or been poorly documented. While it began with a fairly strong sense of phonaesthetics, some additions are notable for their dissonance with the rest of the language. It's on a journey without a road to follow.

So while I focus on canon Qunlat, I’ll also be trying to point out the things I like, and the rough edges that make things difficult or uncertain, while attempting to take an understanding view of it all–Heck knows, I’ve made some real clunkers in my time as a conlanger, and I didn’t have to publish any of it on a deadline.

Edward “Big Balls” Coristine, one of the first technologists hired as part of Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), is no longer working for the federal government, according to multiple sources.
“Edward Coristine resigned yesterday,” a White House official tells WIRED.
Coristine received full-time employment status at the GSA late last month, as reported by WIRED. As of Tuesday afternoon, his Google Workspace account with the General Services Administration (GSA) was no longer active, according to a source with direct knowledge. His name also no longer appears on a White House contact list of current DOGE employees on the federal payroll maintained by a senior administration official, the official says.
In May, Coristine appeared to be attending regular meetings with departments and agencies, including a May 5 meeting with the Commerce Department to discuss Trump’s golden Visa, a May 15 meeting to discuss implementing the DOGE agenda at the military, and a May 22 meeting with the Treasury Department. He was listed on a report regarding the GSA workforce on June 10. That report comes out once a month.
Previously, Coristine was one of a handful of DOGE-affiliated staffers who were occasionally seen at GSA headquarters in Washington, DC. He worked from the sixth floor of the office, which was cordoned off for employees affiliated with DOGE and the agency’s leadership team.

When Musk exited government in an official capacity last month, DOGE’s future was uncertain. Musk’s top lieutenant, Steve Davis, president of the Boring Company, another Musk venture, also announced he would leave DOGE with Musk.
Sahil Lavingia, a former DOGE member who WIRED first identified at the Department of Veterans’ Affairs says, “I have heard since Elon and Steve have supposedly departed, they’ve terminated a lot of those that got hired. They're all still probationary, right? There's that two-year probationary period. So there's a good chance that a lot of those people end up getting fired anyway.”
Coristine, according to Lavingia, was one of a small group of technologists who were highly trusted within DOGE and deployed across multiple federal agencies, and given multiple federal laptops. “The core group of pre-inauguration engineers joked about how many laptops they had. It was almost like a competition in the sense to have seven, eight different laptops that they would run around with,” says Lavingia.
During his time in government—a period in which DOGE sought to dismantle large parts of the federal bureaucracy, obtained direct access to sensitive federal payment systems, and worked to join siloed systems together to enable surveillance of people in the US—Coristine appeared at the GSA, Office of Personnel Management, the US Agency for International Development, the Department of Education, and the Small Business Administration.
Coristine, who has gone by the handle “Big Balls” online, is a 19-year-old high school graduate who worked at Neuralink for several months and founded a company called Tesla.Sexy LLC in 2021. The company owns several domains including two registered in Russia, one of which is an AI Discord bot. He also briefly worked for a company founded by reformed blackhat hackers called the Path Network, and a Telegram handle associated with Coristine appears to have solicited a distributed denial of service attack.

Would you put Louis XIV as overrated?
Oof, that's a tough one.
It's particularly hard to answer because the reign of the Sun King also saw the tenure of some of the most influential chief ministers in French history: Mazarin, and Colbert.

While perhaps not quite as famous as a certain cardinal whose schemes kept getting foiled by the Three Musketeers, these guys were world-historically important.
Mazarin was Richelieu's political heir, and brought his predecessor's policy of using the Thirty Years War as a way to break the back of Hapsburg dominance to a successful conclusion. The Peace of Westphalia not only served as the foundation for modern international relations, but also expanded France's position in Alsace and the Rhineland - especially when Mazarin pulled off an anti-Hapsburg alliance with the new League of the Rhine.

At the same time that France was winning the Franco-Spanish War, which won them a big chunk of territory in the Low Countries around Artois, Luxembourg, and parts of Flanders, and all of the territory north of the Pyrenees Mountains including French Catalonia. It also got Louis XIV the hand of Maria Teresa, which would eventually create the catalyst for the War of Spanish Succession and the War of Austrian Succession...
And while Mazarin was doing all of this, he was also busy crushing the Fronde uprising led by le Grand Condé, which he eventually accomplished in 1653, and creating a formidble system of centralized royal government through the intendants that ended the power of the feudal nobility.

As for Colbert, he was the guy who figured out how to pay for all of this. The single biggest reason why economists need to shut the fuck up when they talk about mercantilism, Colbert was the financial and economic genius of his age. Remember all those canals I'm so crazy about? Colbert built them. Specifically, he was responsible for the Canal des Deux Mers, transforming France's economy by linking the Mediterranean to the Atlantic.

He also turbo-charged France's economic development by restructing public debt to reduce interest payments and cracking down on tax farmers, reforming (although not ultimately solving) the taxation system of the Ancien Régime by using indirect taxes to get around tax evasion by the First and Second Estate, equalizing (but not ending) internal customs duties, and putting the power of the state into supporting French commerce and manufacturing. This included significant tariffs to support domestic producers, direct public investments into lace and silk manufacturing, and the creation of joint-stock corporations like the French East India Company. (This also meant Colbert's direct promotion of the slave trade and the Code Noir in order to generate hugely profitable investments in Haitian sugar and tobacco plantations for import into France and the rest of Europe.)

This makes it a little difficult to separate out what credit belongs to these guys versus the guy who hired them. What I can say is that Louis was directly responsible for Versailles, but also for the revocation of the Edict of Nantes.

Looking For A Miracle
In the history of American retailing, there has never been a chain whose name became synonymous not just with an event, but an entire holiday season. While younger generations may not have the same level of intense memories as their parents and grandparents, it is still part of our fabric. It starts on Thanksgiving and runs through Christmas.
Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is as much tradition as is the turkey that will be front and center on dining room tables later that same day. The parade dates to 1924, and it was a shrewd move on behalf of the department store to put its name on it. Little did they know then it would become synonymous with not just the parade, but also the day and the holiday shopping that would ensue the day after.
As if that weren’t enough, Hollywood picked up on this beautiful romance, and in 1947 released Miracle on 34th Street. It was almost like it was a 96-minute commercial for Macy’s as it spun the tale of a drunk man hired to play Santa Claus at their downtown store.

With all of that good fortune, it would be easy to think the company was set up for life. Alas, no one is immune to change, and even Macy’s, which continues to benefit from its association with the parade as well as the month that follows, is in trouble. They just announced 150 more store closings, leaving the chain with 350 stores. It once had many hundred more.
The news comes not long after Macy’s rejected a $5.8 billion buy-out bid. They must be feeling pretty confident that they can take it from here, choppy waters be damned.
But this does not address the elephant in the room, that being the one whose name is Change. Much has indeed changed in the century since the birth of that parade, when downtown flagship department stores were a matter of civic pride and family tradition. I remember my family always traveling to downtown Chicago to go to Marshall Field, then the leading store in the region. It was an event, complete with seeing Santa, dining in the restaurant, and shopping all day. Side note: Macy’s eventually bought Marshall Field and changed the name, but Chicagoans still refer to that downtown location as Field’s.
Today, department stores are in the throes of death, along with the suburban malls in which they reside. Whereas mall owners could once count on these anchor stores to attract the foot traffic that would keep the ship and its smaller tenants afloat, that is no longer the case. The US is littered with abandoned malls or those so eerily like a ghost town that you begin to wonder why we went down this road in the first place.
Of course, we can point to e-commerce as a big contributor for this decline. This includes Amazon as well as the upstart fast-fashion site Shein. But there’s more. COVID taught us that curbside pickup and delivery are also viable options. Mass merchandisers like Target and Walmart have upped their game, and provide more outlets for our shopping dollars. All of these have combined to create a perfect storm.
It’s not like Macy’s hasn’t mounted its own response with a reasonable e-commerce site. It’s just that through so many decades of focusing on its roots that it overlooked the need to grow in new ways. Worse yet, it has developed a rather stodgy image. Just like Sears did toward the end of its life, Macy’s is now where your old aunt shops.
Eeewwwww.
I have to wonder how much longer the chain will survive. I hope they do not face the same fate as Sears. For that matter, I would not wish upon them the challenges that JC Penney has faced. At best they can hope for the comparatively calm seas that Dillards finds itself in.
This is the challenge for every legacy retailer. You have to maintain relevance. And while an annual parade may stir romantic notions, I don’t think it is going to be close to enough to keep the company going for 12 months a year, not just one. I hate to rain on their parade, but it’s looking kind of overcast out there, and it’s time to reach for an umbrella.

All this is true, but I'm going to add some shading to the post-2000s dot-com pre-2020 area (2005 to 2015 was my startups phase). One of the lessons investers learned after the first dot-com boom was that public perception was less important than users. A lot of the boom folded when companies like pets.com and the first versions of delivery companies and eshops were gaining massive public perception by throwing money at superbowl ads and Times Square billboards, and then showing that millions upon millions of people were visiting their website. The investers didn't realise at the time that this was a soft metric, the numbers they didn't ask for were how many users bought things. Browsed things. Put things into their cart. Showed any interest in buying anything.
So the next revolution was Monthly Active Users, and really it still is. The only two numbers the investors ever care about are MAU and revenue, and revenue can wait. MAU must go up. If MAU goes down, or remains stagnent, or doesn't go up fast enough, your entire company management will be consumed by meetings with and explainations to investors. Nothing that isn't MAU related can get done at all until MAU is growing higher, faster. There was a break in 2007 with the credit crunch, and for a few years a revenue path was more important. But then, MAU.
MAU MAU MAU. Like an unfed cat.
This means there's no scope for solidifying what the product is, if you don't go directly towards the biggest possible markets with the most users, you're going to have to justify that. There's no scope for maintaining company culture - you just have to grow (Which is part of why Startup company culture doesn't generally scale). Once you let in the vulture capitalists, you are no longer the product you were building. You are a balloon, and if you do not grow, you will not be able to afford to stay the size you are.
If you aren't doing what the investors want, they will pressure you into hiring a Business Development Officer, usually freshly off a larger company they own, who will be inserted to the company to ensure initiatives are more "business focused". Most of the non-founder early staff will find their roles and ability to affect change curtailed, if they're not unexpectedly "downsized" for not meeting targets previously unknown. The founding CEO will "step down" to focus more on "the things that matter in the company" and the Business Development Officer will take on the CEO role, and withing a year the company will have pivoted to a new investor-friendly industry (like is currently happening to LLM, Web3, "AI"; but previously was "Social Networks", "Web 2.0", e-commerce, microblogs, photo sharing, blog platforms, video, web portals, social internet, etc etc) and the founders will have moved to "exciting new oppertunities".
If you do what the investors want, either you become the next big thing (Google, Facebook), are bought by the previous big thing and kept around (Blogger, Instagram), are bought by a bigger thing and absorbed like a tub of mealworms into which someone has dropped a steak (Occulus, anything Twitter bought). Even if you become the next big thing, you will become primarily an advertising company whose original product is just a way to feed those ads to people.
If anyone wants to know why every tech company in the world right now is clamoring for AI like drowned rats scrabbling to board a ship, I decided to make a post to explain what's happening.
(Disclaimer to start: I'm a software engineer who's been employed full time since 2018. I am not a historian nor an overconfident Youtube essayist, so this post is my working knowledge of what I see around me and the logical bridges between pieces.)
Okay anyway. The explanation starts further back than what's going on now. I'm gonna start with the year 2000. The Dot Com Bubble just spectacularly burst. The model of "we get the users first, we learn how to profit off them later" went out in a no-money-having bang (remember this, it will be relevant later). A lot of money was lost. A lot of people ended up out of a job. A lot of startup companies went under. Investors left with a sour taste in their mouth and, in general, investment in the internet stayed pretty cooled for that decade. This was, in my opinion, very good for the internet as it was an era not suffocating under the grip of mega-corporation oligarchs and was, instead, filled with Club Penguin and I Can Haz Cheezburger websites.
Then around the 2010-2012 years, a few things happened. Interest rates got low, and then lower. Facebook got huge. The iPhone took off. And suddenly there was a huge new potential market of internet users and phone-havers, and the cheap money was available to start backing new tech startup companies trying to hop on this opportunity. Companies like Uber, Netflix, and Amazon either started in this time, or hit their ramp-up in these years by shifting focus to the internet and apps.
Now, every start-up tech company dreaming of being the next big thing has one thing in common: they need to start off by getting themselves massively in debt. Because before you can turn a profit you need to first spend money on employees and spend money on equipment and spend money on data centers and spend money on advertising and spend money on scale and and and
But also, everyone wants to be on the ship for The Next Big Thing that takes off to the moon.
So there is a mutual interest between new tech companies, and venture capitalists who are willing to invest $$$ into said new tech companies. Because if the venture capitalists can identify a prize pig and get in early, that money could come back to them 100-fold or 1,000-fold. In fact it hardly matters if they invest in 10 or 20 total bust projects along the way to find that unicorn.
But also, becoming profitable takes time. And that might mean being in debt for a long long time before that rocket ship takes off to make everyone onboard a gazzilionaire.
But luckily, for tech startup bros and venture capitalists, being in debt in the 2010's was cheap, and it only got cheaper between 2010 and 2020. If people could secure loans for ~3% or 4% annual interest, well then a $100,000 loan only really costs $3,000 of interest a year to keep afloat. And if inflation is higher than that or at least similar, you're still beating the system.
So from 2010 through early 2022, times were good for tech companies. Startups could take off with massive growth, showing massive potential for something, and venture capitalists would throw infinite money at them in the hopes of pegging just one winner who will take off. And supporting the struggling investments or the long-haulers remained pretty cheap to keep funding.
You hear constantly about "Such and such app has 10-bazillion users gained over the last 10 years and has never once been profitable", yet the thing keeps chugging along because the investors backing it aren't stressed about the immediate future, and are still banking on that "eventually" when it learns how to really monetize its users and turn that profit.
The pandemic in 2020 took a magnifying-glass-in-the-sun effect to this, as EVERYTHING was forcibly turned online which pumped a ton of money and workers into tech investment. Simultaneously, money got really REALLY cheap, bottoming out with historic lows for interest rates.
Then the tide changed with the massive inflation that struck late 2021. Because this all-gas no-brakes state of things was also contributing to off-the-rails inflation (along with your standard-fare greedflation and price gouging, given the extremely convenient excuses of pandemic hardships and supply chain issues). The federal reserve whipped out interest rate hikes to try to curb this huge inflation, which is like a fire extinguisher dousing and suffocating your really-cool, actively-on-fire party where everyone else is burning but you're in the pool. And then they did this more, and then more. And the financial climate followed suit. And suddenly money was not cheap anymore, and new loans became expensive, because loans that used to compound at 2% a year are now compounding at 7 or 8% which, in the language of compounding, is a HUGE difference. A $100,000 loan at a 2% interest rate, if not repaid a single cent in 10 years, accrues to $121,899. A $100,000 loan at an 8% interest rate, if not repaid a single cent in 10 years, more than doubles to $215,892.
Now it is scary and risky to throw money at "could eventually be profitable" tech companies. Now investors are watching companies burn through their current funding and, when the companies come back asking for more, investors are tightening their coin purses instead. The bill is coming due. The free money is drying up and companies are under compounding pressure to produce a profit for their waiting investors who are now done waiting.
You get enshittification. You get quality going down and price going up. You get "now that you're a captive audience here, we're forcing ads or we're forcing subscriptions on you." Don't get me wrong, the plan was ALWAYS to monetize the users. It's just that it's come earlier than expected, with way more feet-to-the-fire than these companies were expecting. ESPECIALLY with Wall Street as the other factor in funding (public) companies, where Wall Street exhibits roughly the same temperament as a baby screaming crying upset that it's soiled its own diaper (maybe that's too mean a comparison to babies), and now companies are being put through the wringer for anything LESS than infinite growth that Wall Street demands of them.
Internal to the tech industry, you get MASSIVE wide-spread layoffs. You get an industry that used to be easy to land multiple job offers shriveling up and leaving recent graduates in a desperately awful situation where no company is hiring and the market is flooded with laid-off workers trying to get back on their feet.
Because those coin-purse-clutching investors DO love virtue-signaling efforts from companies that say "See! We're not being frivolous with your money! We only spend on the essentials." And this is true even for MASSIVE, PROFITABLE companies, because those companies' value is based on the Rich Person Feeling Graph (their stock) rather than the literal profit money. A company making a genuine gazillion dollars a year still tears through layoffs and freezes hiring and removes the free batteries from the printer room (totally not speaking from experience, surely) because the investors LOVE when you cut costs and take away employee perks. The "beer on tap, ping pong table in the common area" era of tech is drying up. And we're still unionless.
Never mind that last part.
And then in early 2023, AI (more specifically, Chat-GPT which is OpenAI's Large Language Model creation) tears its way into the tech scene with a meteor's amount of momentum. Here's Microsoft's prize pig, which it invested heavily in and is galivanting around the pig-show with, to the desperate jealousy and rapture of every other tech company and investor wishing it had that pig. And for the first time since the interest rate hikes, investors have dollar signs in their eyes, both venture capital and Wall Street alike. They're willing to restart the hose of money (even with the new risk) because this feels big enough for them to take the risk.
Now all these companies, who were in varying stages of sweating as their bill came due, or wringing their hands as their stock prices tanked, see a single glorious gold-plated rocket up out of here, the likes of which haven't been seen since the free money days. It's their ticket to buy time, and buy investors, and say "see THIS is what will wring money forth, finally, we promise, just let us show you."
To be clear, AI is NOT profitable yet. It's a money-sink. Perhaps a money-black-hole. But everyone in the space is so wowed by it that there is a wide-spread and powerful conviction that it will become profitable and earn its keep. (Let's be real, half of that profit "potential" is the promise of automating away jobs of pesky employees who peskily cost money.) It's a tech-space industrial revolution that will automate away skilled jobs, and getting in on the ground floor is the absolute best thing you can do to get your pie slice's worth.
It's the thing that will win investors back. It's the thing that will get the investment money coming in again (or, get it second-hand if the company can be the PROVIDER of something needed for AI, which other companies with venture-back will pay handsomely for). It's the thing companies are terrified of missing out on, lest it leave them utterly irrelevant in a future where not having AI-integration is like not having a mobile phone app for your company or not having a website.
So I guess to reiterate on my earlier point:
Drowned rats. Swimming to the one ship in sight.
