In October 2002, the album Believe was recorded, which, like its predecessor The Sickness, soon became platinum. In December 2003, bassist Fuzz left the band. “Holy Place” is empty for quite a long time – 6 months. Finally, in March 2004, John Moyer, the former Union Underground bass player, became a member of the band. John is from Texas, as a result – his attribute in life – a cowboy hat.

Transferring the reflective style of rappers like Drake to the genre of gangsta rap, Louisiana-based MC Kevin Gates spent five-plus years on the mixtape circuit before climbing into the Top 40 of the Billboard 200 album chart with his 2013 release Stranger Than Fiction. Born and raised in Baton Rouge, Gates made his mixtape debut in 2007 with Pick of da Litter. Mixtapes with titles like All In and I Don't Know What to Call It, Vol. 1 appeared over the next few years. After he dropped the popular The Luca Brasi Story mixtape -- one of the first releases on Bread Winners' Association, a label he co-founded with wife and booking manager Dreka Gates -- things changed quickly. It led to appearances on high-profile mixtapes from Pusha T and Gudda Gudda, and Gates subsequently signed a contract with major-label Atlantic. Stranger Than Fiction, the first of several releases to bear the logos of Bread Winners' Association and Atlantic, was released that same year. It featured guest spots from Wiz Khalifa, Juicy J, and Starlito, and debuted at number 37 on the Billboard 200 chart. Plies, 2 Chainz, and Doe B helped deliver his 2014 mixtape, By Any Means. The next year saw the single 'Kno One' preview Islah. Gates' proper debut album, it was issued in January 2016, debuted at number two, and was certified gold before the rapper returned with an EP-length mixtape, Murder for Hire II, that May. The single 'What If,' whose main hook referenced Joan Osborne's 1995 hit 'What If God Was One of Us,' appeared in March 2017. The track appeared on By Any Means 2, which appeared in September.

Appreciating Music in the Age of Streaming

Picture this: You’re at the club with your friends (I know it’s been a while but bear with me) and the finest bottle of the bottom-shelf liquor you all contributed to is brought to the table.

Everyone pours their shot into their respective glasses and downs it, stank faced, while you reach for a bottle of coke. If you’ve been in this position then you know what to expect. 

‘What the f*** is wrong with you?’, ‘Look at this fool chasing his drink?’, ‘Do you want a sippy cup with that?’

To many, drinking is a sacred act. Tarnishing this fine imaginary bottle with a soft drink is practically blasphemy and everyone acts like it.

This same line of logic applies to music. Some appreciate only the finest of formats. If iT iSn’t VinYL then wHy bOtHEr? 

I mean, music snobs say that is the best way to appreciate a piece of music, right? Streaming, in comparison, is equivalent to rubbing alcohol. Perfect for scrubbing your bathroom and nothing else. 

Now to my story:

The first album I ever called my own was a bootleg copy of Coldplay’s ‘Parachutes’ that my mother’s colleague burned onto a CD. At that moment in time, I cherished it more than any worldly possession. You could leave me destitute on the street, take all my three names and my left kidney but please just let me keep Yellow. 

I was 9, I didn’t know shit. But the experience of having that physical manifestation of a band that brought me pure and utter joy was like none other.

Fast forward to 2008 when I discovered Waptrick. I’m sure many of my fellow millennials remember the significance of this moment. With the precious 128 mb at your disposal, you could have 15 of the choicest singles (cue hurricane_chris_ay_bay_bay.mp3) and that ‘Run this Town’ video so you and all your friends could decipher the illuminati symbolism. This was a moment unlike any other for me because for the first time, I could think of a song I wanted, download it, and play it wherever I was. Things just kept getting better.

The next significant moment in my journey of musical piracy started with a quest for the PC version of ‘Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas’. On it I discovered the holy grail of internet piracy itself. The Pirate Bay. 

Through this highly illicit forum, I could actually possess any album that I wanted in its entirety. Every week, I’d steal the house modem (remember those?), hide in a corner and download the albums everyone in school had been going on and on about. 

If having 15 songs had been a big deal a few years earlier, having Drake’s ‘Thank Me Later’, Paramore’s ‘Brand New Eyes’ and Gambinos’ ‘Because the Internet' at the same time was groundbreaking.

I did not think things could get any better. And I was right. Streaming was, and I think still is, the endgame. 

Any song that you could possibly want to hear is a few clicks away. And if you don’t know the title there’s always Shazam ready to fill in the blanks. You, as the consumer, have limitless choices. 

But this doesn’t make things better.

 In the book ‘The Paradox of Choice’, the American Psychologist Barry Schwartz explains how access to more choices doesn’t necessarily mean more enjoyment. 

The assumption is that the more options you have the freer you’ll feel. But more often than not, the fact that you have more choices introduces a new set of problems. This phenomenon is known as analysis paralysis.

The more choices you have the less satisfaction you feel in the choice you’ve made. 

This goes to the heart of streaming itself in that for an artist to earn any revenue off a song, it only needs to have played to the .30 second mark. 

Now that you can listen to anything, if the song you’re playing hasn’t hit in the first thirty seconds, you could listen to literally anything else.

They say, and I firmly believe, that the secret to happiness is low expectations. 

Having more choices means that the expectation for how great those choices are, will be high. Since your expectations are high, you will inevitably be less satisfied with the result. 

This is why half the time you spend on Netflix is looking for something to watch rather than actually watching anything. You don’t want to pick something bad and end up regretting it. 

Remember when we all had a DVD bootleg stall somewhere in our area code? You knew what you wanted before you got there or, alternatively, picked something from all the posters on the wall. That took a shorter time than it takes to decide between watching something new and rewatching Brooklyn Nine-Nine. 

I do not endorse piracy, however contradictory that sounds. I firmly believe that artists deserve the 0.0056 dollars that comes with every play.

Having more choices places the burden of control on you. Ultimately, I think this is the point to be taken away from all of this. 

Whatever way you choose to make your choices is fine, as long as it’s you making that choice. 

Having access to all the music I’ve been collecting since I was thirteen makes it harder to pick anything to listen to but still, I love it all. 

More so, I love that there’s so much of it to enjoy in the first place.
