I just suddenly remembered a conversation I had with my cousin about the concept of cheating. I was probably 19 or 20, and I don’t remember how the topic came up. Maybe there was a high profile celebrity affair in the news that week. Anyway. I said something about how I would not be bothered if I had a partner and they had sex with someone else. However, I would be upset if they were having an emotional relationship with someone else, not like having close friends, but being intimate in a non-physical way. This seemed like a very obvious and clear distinction to me at the time, but my cousin had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. I couldn’t explain why.
