In my brain, Snufkin is really ticklish and sensitive, but most people don't realize because he doesn't let them get physically close enough.

Moomin, on the other hand, used to being around warm and touchy feely people, approaches Snufkin like he would approach his friends or family. On the rare occasion Snufkin lets his guard down, Moomin finds out it's not quite the same sensation... There grows a mysterious craving that forces him to steal all the light touches he can get. But, as if they've just burnt themselves by touching a hot surface, they promptly pull away, and, just as quickly, begins to swell a feeling of cold and itching, of distant lingering.

I wish something more people understood about Moomin and Snufkin's relationship is that the pining is mutual. Snufkin keeps coming back to Moominvalley every spring for a reason. He also admires Moomin and wants his approval, that's where his inner conflict comes from. And Moomin isn't nearly as clingy as people think. In fact, he tries his best to avoid showing Snufkin how much he misses him, even though Snufkin can tell, and never asks him to stay. Also saying that their relationship could never work completely ignores the character development they got in the last two books which would've led to a healthier relationship between them had they reunited.

I got bored and made a future Moomin valley AU and gave them all little happy families

So my Moomin valley fixation came back after like 5 whole years, and originally these were just meant to be one off little ship kid concepts but I grew attached to them and the idea of it and eventually it kinda evolved into a next generation AU in the span of like 3 days… Hope I’m not too late to the party chat…

I’ve been thinking up a LOT about this AU, but I’ll just give a basic run down rlly fast:

Lumi and Linna are best friends and basically take over the roles of snufkin and moomin, who are now lumis parents, the AU is very slice of life and follows a lot of the main lessons from the original moomin shows (Especially a veeeerrryyy familiar dilemma about a friend feeling sad over one choosing to leave for the winter)

Lumi is similar to Snufkin where she has a big urge to get away from social situations and be on her own, and can really only spend prolonged amount of time with her parents (or Linna in certain situations). Despite looking almost exactly like snufkin, she acts a lot like Joxter and it’s no suprise the two are actually very close especially considering their equal love for sleeping and hating authority. Despite her love for sleeping and her indifference to the idea of hibernation, ever since Lumi was able to choose she’s always chose to go south with Snufkin. Even if this makes Linna sad.

Linna is much more social than Lumi, and doesn’t mind speaking her mind and having fun with others. She takes after Snorkmaiden with her love for Romance, and often fantasizes about her “Prince Charming.” Linna, unlike Lumi, has hibernated for all her life, even after she was given the option to hibernate or not, she often wishes that Lumi would stay for the winter, but Lumi is insistent on traveling, but the two are always happy to meet again during the spring and go on their normal adventures. She usually acts as the “pact leader” and is often the one leading the games and day plans, but Lumi helps take charge when they are going on adventures as she is best at it.

There’s a couple side characters that are turned into more important roles, like for example in this AU the joxter is actually a reoccurring character !! (Let’s just pretend that Joxter and Snufkin met & rekindle their relationship and so now Joxter gets to be a silly grandfather!!)

That’s pretty much the basic rundown, and yes I did choose to ship snorkmaiden and Ninny, it was last minute but I thought it’d be actually rlly cute unironically.

Anyways Here’s some extra doodles I made cause I wanted to attempt to replicate Tove’s doodling style to finish off this post, so enjoy these!! And thank you for reading!!

Any moominvalley fans still out there who are willing to collaborate to re-write season 4?????

Despite what my content on tumblr conveys, the moomin books are one of my favourite things on earth, for various reasons, especially what they convey and the subtle messages they bring. Initally, I felt that moominvalley wasnt that great of a moomin adaptation, but there was a certain charm that it had that made me look at season 4 by itself, and after getting over that 'the original media are always better dont even bother' goblin that resides in my head, I found a really charming show that made me feel better about myself. too bad the last season was so... nothing.

I won't lie seeing people dismiss ALL of moominvalley as being bad just because snufmin didn't become canon is making me really sad. You guys are completely dismissing all the love and care that went into this show.

S4 Spoilers Under Cut

I’m so disappointed in how they handled Snufkin and Moomintroll this season. I had my worries, but I also had a lot of hope. They did deliberately put in those interactions. The team also kept reacting to mentions of Snufmin with winks and nudges in interviews and videos they put out. It makes me wonder what the point was. I genuinely feel like this was queerbaiting. And I don’t want to use that term because it doesn’t feel like one to use lightly. Even more so since I had such a great love for Moominvalley’s other seasons. Especially 1 and 2. It was genuinely really beautiful and soft and had such lovely queer undertones and moments. But I think it’s more than fair to say that the team knew about the reactions and how many people were introduced to it via Snufkin x Moomin. And they seemingly used that. They gave us build up but didn’t follow through. When it came down to it, they shrugged it off and didn’t address it at all. It felt so removed from Season 4. And I think that that, in essence, is queerbaiting. Because if you keep nodding to something throughout a series, using it to keep your audience waiting for the ‘inevitable’ conclusion to it that’ll certainly play out by the time the story ends only to snatch it away once you’ve secured your viewers and money, that is what that is. And I honestly expected better from the studio. If they weren’t going to commit, then they shouldn’t have kept bringing hopes up and making it seem like the direction it would go in.

listen i love snufmin as much as the next fella but most people i've encountered who ship it are like "ooh! aah! snufkin is so cool and mysterious, he must be dangerous (but in like a sexy way) and knows all the ways to woo someone-"

listen. listen. if snorkmaiden is anything to go by, then moomin would canonically be the more experienced with relationships. i bet snufkin doesn't even know how to hold hands /hj
