Cryptic Tim AU

In which Kon is his normal, kryptonian self, currently dating his semi-cryptic boyfriend from Gotham. Tim has a human form that’s very conventionally attractive (he think he look average, he is very wrong). His true form is a freak of nature/ very unsettling. Kon knows about his other form, but he has never seen it for himself.

Tim is so, so scared that Kon will leave him the moment he sees what he really looks like, he is terrified of it. (aka ✨insecurities✨)

After a lot of convincing, begging, promises, words of affirmations and love, Tim finally reveals his true, creepy as hell Cryptic form to Kon, who immediately discovers many new things he really, really like about his partner.

Batfamily fans don’t mischaracterize arrow characters to prop up bats when you’ve very clearly never touched an arrow family comic in your life challenge IMPOSSIBLE EDITION!!!!!!

Like I so desperately don't want to come off as one of those asshole comic fans cause like I so genuinely want people to know these characters and this wonderful story telling device. This industry which has a lot of problems but is so fascinating and has such a rich history, like I really do want more people to get into comics. I literally keep a beginners list of comics that's digestible stories that aren't like a list of random issues which can be kinda intimidating to new fans. I try to keep it updated for characters and if I don"t have the character their looking for I'll go find a few ppl that do and like do a quick vet to see if they seem to know what they're talking abt and give that to them and if anyone is interested in that pls hit me up let me know I genuinely love introducing ppl to this world!!

Its just so frustrating watching your favorite characters get constantly mischaracterized to such an extreme extent by other people in the fandom and then have that be the general consistence of what they're like when its so far from how they act in the actual comics that are about them!! and then get told that I'm wrong even tho i can literally back up what I'm saying with panel proof from multiple runs! Its not even contained to the fandom IT HAPPENS IN BAT BOOKS TOO!! Bat book writers constantly change arrow characters to fit their story lines and make the bats look good and I get it that's how it works these are paper dolls that have been used for over 80 years and have had hundreds of people use them. They're meant to be molded to fit the current story the writer wants to tell but its frustrating cause then people will ignore all of the books that center them and just take batbooks as being word of god for all characters.

I wonder if Jazz could be a catalyst for Orion realizing he isn’t that special. Because B-127 definitely is going to view Orion as extremely special and important, and Elita may view him as especially annoying. But to Jazz, Orion is just a cool coworker and a fun guy to be around, who does reckless stuff but also likes to help. So long as he doesn’t get Prime-dazzled, he could be a great part of Optimus grounding himself in realizing he is also just some guy.

ooohh i love that idea! personally i think elita would still be critical for orion's character development in this au, but adding jazz to the mix could be really fun!

the thing about orion's arc in this au is that he has to let go of the idea that him being a prime since birth makes him inherently worthy of leading. both because that's a pretty conceited way of thinking and because it places an unreasonable amount of pressure on him.

the high guard are absolutely no help on this because to them orion being a Prime is the foundation upon which they've set all their hopes for the future. he's their last hope and they've built up an idea of what he would grow up to be like throughout all the years they've been apart. and when they finally reunite and he inevitably fails to meet up their expectations, their disappointment is so great it causes a lot of them to lose all their faith on the Primes and Primus as a whole.

which. not a great thing to put on a twenty something years old kid who just got his entire world shaken to its very foundation!

bee is not nearly as bad as the high guard about this, but he's definitely a little bit too starstruck to really give orion the grounding presence he needs for this. like. bee would've followed orion pretty much to the end of the world simply because he was the first friend he'd had in so long. so add to that orion being revealed as a Prime and bee is simply too attached now to really tell orion off in any way.

not to mention orion feels a bit too responsible for bee to let him know just how shaken and terrified he is by what bee clearly sees as something amazing. personally i see bee as just a couple years younger than the rest of the squad but enough so that orion feels compelled to take care of him in some level. more like a younger brother than a son, but still firmly in the "I have to be strong for him" zone.

now for elita i think she would be perfect to make orion understand he's being incredibly idiotic by thinking being a Prime inherently makes him a good leader. she worked her aft off to be captain of just one (1) miner crew and she's better than him in everything so what makes him think just being born with a fancy title is sufficient to lead an entire army. he has to put in the work too. there's simply no way around it.

and in contrast jazz can make him see that it's okay. it's fine that he's not the perfect Prime already. that he's not an irremediable failure just because he failed once. orion saved his life back when he was nothing but a reckless miner with nothing but spite and a good heart to his name. even when he messed up and got in trouble, he never stopped trying to help. that's why he liked him. why would him being a Prime change that.

do you have comic recs for someone who wants to get into tim and timkon? I read superman comics but your fic made me wanna know more about this character who makes me want to eat metal with how weird and scary he is (affectionate)

hello! and welcome to the “weird scary little guy who makes you want to eat metal” (or perhaps put him in a salad spinner) club

tim has many, many comics, so for the purposes of this i’ll go with some big arcs/series and then some random personal favs

a lonely place of dying (1989): aka tim’s intro, in which 13 y/o tim engages in his favorite pastime (stalking dick grayson), tries to be a family therapist, and somehow ends up in a cape and pointy boots at the end of it.

robin (1993): so much content spanning so many batman plotlines; this is just issue after issue of tim being the most 90s kid to ever 90s kid (and then 00s kid to ever 00s kid). also much of it is written by chuck dixon, who is good at being so homophobic that the characters loop right back around to being queer.

young justice (1998): for both tim and kon (and bart and cassie and the whole yj crew)! also featuring tim and kon both wearing gloves that are way too big for them. no idea what's going on there but it's kind of like when puppies have giant paws they haven't grown into yet.

red robin (2009): THE tim comic to me, partially because marcus to draws most of it (issue 6 on i believe) and the way he draws tim here is peak tim to me, and partially because tim is just balls to the wall bonkers in fucking yonkers the whole series. this spans his brucequest and damian becoming robin (and damian in this is so!! and dick is so!!) while tim takes his shaky next steps. he’s in his messy bitch era but also stuck at 17(?) so that just means he’s randomly making out with sort-of-adversaries on rooftops and thinking longingly of kon and getting fake engaged(??) to a girl he can barely ask on a first date. (it has scant few but still some good timkon moments here and there.) (and speaking of marcus to: this and this.)

a lonely place of living (detective comics) (2017): an arc in which everyone thought tim was dead but surprise! he was just stuck in a pocket dimension prison and now he has to come back and stop gun batman (again). feat. tim being wildly competent from page one. kon is, iirc, currently erased from the timeline but never fear, tim still manages to find a way to think about him.

random/short comics:

WF3: superboy & robin (1996): tim & kon solve a case together in a two-parter that is, as described by a reviewer on its league of comic geeks entry, "…a pretty fun meet cute, I mean team-up…" (basically: see above re: chuck dixon.)

knight terrors: robin (2023): a two-parter in which tim and jason are trapped in a sentient nightmare together. if you like those vibes definitely check out this fic.

nightwing (1996) #25: tim being an annoying little brother is something that can be so personal—

im deeply sick rn so you know what that means !! time to have deeply indulgent sick andreil thoughts !!!

I think Andrew is the kind of person to be really stoic about being sick. Like never mention it, will sniffle twice in an hour kinda stuff. He does what needs to be done (and will probably act a little more miserable than usual about it) but the second he's at home and alone he's curling up and sleeping for hours. He is going to be warm and lazy so hard and if you dare wake him you may loose a limb. Neil understands his stoicism around the others and tries to let him keep up the facade (so long as he wants to) in front of him as well. And depending on how sick Andrew is he'll cave pretty easily and let Neil fuss over him for abou tfive minutes before just making him nap with him. I just don't think Andrew really likes being fussed over and rather prefers to just have Neil with him when he's feeling sick and gross, you know just to have company (and possible get him sick so they suffer together shhhh).

When Neil's sick literally no one will know it unless its BAD. His time on the run taught him so long as you weren't actively dying you weren't sick which directly translated to Neil Mind Over Mattering literally every illness he comes into contant with. Like the stomach flu sweeps through the Foxes' dorms at some point and everyone is like, absolutely rocked by it and Neil's just like. guys just don't puke. like just choose not to do that. and everyone hates him for it. The one time the Foxes realize he's sick is when his fever spiked to a 105 and he nearly fainted. Andrew is the only one that can effectively (mostly) see past Neil and immediatly swoops into Let Me Care For You Mode. He never tries to make a big deal out of it cause he Doesn't Care he Swears and Neil isn't one for grand gestures or anything anyway and stuff, but if Neil sneezes just one too many times Andrew is all over it. He's making Neil tea and getting him blankets and Sudafed and asking does he wants the menthol cough drops or the cherry ones? Like its a together kind of thing for him he will not leave Neil's side.

bonus; kevin gets sick and is the BIGGEST baby about it ever and always wants at least ONE person by his side at all times.
