Breakthroughs in the world of technology do not happen very often. But when they do, they alter everything’s shape. Quantum computing is just that revolution currently taking place. Quantum mechanics-the science concerned with the odd behaviors of particles at atomic and subatomic levels-has fascinated scientists for decades. Today, quantum principles are leaving the lab and entering the world of IT to promise a revolution in industrial problems that classical computers cannot even scratch. Welcome to the age of Quantum Progress.
What is Quantum Computing?
It’s helpful to know what makes quantum computing so revolutionary to understand why it’s so different from the classical variety. That is, in simple words, while traditional computers work on bits and every bit is either 0 or a 1, qubits in quantum computers can represent 0 and 1 at the same time through a property called superposition. These quantum computers can therefore perform many calculations at one time, theoretically solving problems that were unimaginable until now.

A quantum computer is, therefore, a double-edged sword for security. It can crack existing cryptos by factorizing large numbers at lightning speed that would be impossible even for classical computers to do. Challenges Along the Quantum Journey
While quantum computing holds immense promise, it’s still in the early stages, facing several key challenges:
Qubit Stability: Qubits are highly fragile and poorly maintain their quantum state for sufficient periods of time, so to speak, known as coherence. A slight change in temperature or minute noise can create computational errors.
Error Rates and Quantum Decoherence: Error correction will be required for practical quantum computation, but because qubits function, the problem to correct quantum errors is of very high complexity. Researchers are constantly developing solutions to improve the quantum systems’ precision or prolong their lifetime.
Cost and Access: Building and maintaining quantum hardware is expensive-it requires extremely low temperatures and special environments. Cloud computing brings a step toward democratization, but the benefit of mainstream affordability remains for the future.
Though these are barriers, quantum progress moves forward with some major investment from companies and governments in the research and development of all thing’s quantum.
The Future of Quantum in IT
As quantum technology continues to evolve, we can expect it to become an integral part of IT infrastructure:
1. Quantum-Enhanced AI and Analytics: Within the decade, quantum enhancement of AI will be capable of bringing significant breakthroughs in natural language processing, computer vision, and robotics because power is delivered to models enabling analysis at unprecedented speeds.
2. Hybrid Quantum-Classical Systems: Hybrid systems will be available before fully scalable quantum computers. Hybrid systems will enable companies to latch onto quantum advance in selected areas and solve tough problems more efficiently without having to go all in on quantum.

Reshaping IT Infrastructure: Very similar to how cloud computing revolutionized the rethink of the IT infrastructure, quantum will rewrite the rulebook as far as the approach to data storage and processing and security is concerned. Unlike the flat, lifeless surfaces of typical concrete seawalls, each BIOCAP tile is designed with shaded grooves, crevices and small, water-holding pockets. These textured features mimic natural shoreline conditions and create tiny homes for barnacles, oysters, sponges and other marine organisms that filter and improve water quality. The tile’s swirling surface patterns increase the overall surface area, offering more space for colonization. The shaded recesses are intended to help regulate temperature by providing cooler, more stable microenvironments. This thermal buffering can support marine life in the face of rising water temperatures and more frequent heat events driven by climate change. Another potential benefit of the tiles is reducing the impact of waves. When waves hit a natural shoreline, their energy is gradually absorbed by irregular surfaces, tide pools and vegetation. In contrast, when waves strike vertical concrete seawalls, the energy is reflected back into the water rather than absorbed. This wave reflection – the bouncing back of wave energy – can amplify wave action, increase erosion at the base of the wall and create more hazardous conditions during storms. The textured surfaces of the BIOCAP tiles are designed to help diffuse wave energy by mimicking the natural dissipation found on undisturbed shorelines.

Are you familiar with the beluga who underwent surgery at the Shedd aquarium? I would like to hear your thoughts!
Yes! I’m very fortunate to know several members of Kimalu’s team (which included 17 veterinarians in addition to their invaluable support staff*) and Kimalu herself! She’s a very sweet, very personable girl, and it was heartbreaking to hear she wasn’t doing well. For those unfamiliar with the case, Kimalu developed subcutaneous cysts around her blowhole that were causing her noticeable discomfort. It was determined that surgery was the best option for providing her relief.

The surgery itself was groundbreaking, but what’s even more miraculous is the anesthesia. General anesthesia was once considered impossible in cetaceans, due to their size and incredibly unique anatomy and physiology. For example, just intubating them requires manually dislocating the “goosebeak” (modified larynx that transects the esophagus) to allow for access to the trachea. That’s also why they can’t breathe through their mouth! Furthermore, they are voluntary breathers, and must be ventilated until conscious enough to breathe on their own again.
While general anesthesia has now been performed successfully a handful of times in smaller cetaceans, it had never been done in a beluga. In fact, Kimalu was only the second beluga in which anesthesia had even been attempted—and now, she is the first ever beluga to have woken up!

This is a gamechanger for belugas in human care (and maybe, somewhere down the road, in the wild). Now that we know surgery and anesthesia can be performed successfully, the scope of care we can provide them just got a whole lot wider. This is only the first step, but it’s a monumental one. And it goes to show the remarkable care zoos and aquariums provide their animals, as well as the contributions they make to scientific advancement.
