Poppy and Margo Argo story explained for people who know nothing about it: The controversy between Poppy and Mars Argo revolves around allegations of artistic theft, abuse, and manipulation, primarily centered on Titanic Sinclair (Corey Mixter), who was both Poppy’s creative partner and Mars Argo’s former collaborator and boyfriend.
Background on Mars Argo and Titanic Sinclair: Before Poppy’s rise to fame, Mars Argo (real name Brittany Sheets) and Titanic Sinclair were a creative duo known for their unique, surreal online aesthetic. They co-founded the YouTube channel Grocerybagdottv, which featured avant-garde music, satirical videos, and social commentary. Their work gained a cult following, with Mars Argo’s signature look—platinum blonde hair, weird clothing, and a soft yet eerie demeanor—being a key part of their brand. In most of her videos she said "hi! I'm Mars Argo."
However, in 2014, Mars Argo disappeared from the public eye, and Grocerybagdottv stopped uploading. Behind the scenes, Mars later revealed that she had ended her professional and personal relationship with Titanic Sinclair due to alleged emotional and physical abuse. She claimed he became obsessive and controlling, stalking her even after their breakup. She also alleged that he pressured her to continue working together, despite the abuse.
Enter Poppy: Before becoming Poppy, Moriah Pereira had a YouTube channel under the name Moriah Poppy, where she posted song covers and short videos. In 2015, Poppy emerged as a new artist with a strikingly similar aesthetic and video style to what Mars Argo had previously done, and she deleted a her all videos and old channel. Titanic Sinclair became Poppy’s director, collaborator, manager and boyfriend, crafting her persona as an eerie, robotic pop star. Many fans quickly noticed similarities between Poppy’s look, mannerisms, and even vocal style with Mars Argo’s past work. This led to speculation that Titanic Sinclair had simply "recreated" Mars Argo with a new person. Over the next few years, as Poppy’s fame grew, Mars Argo remained silent—until 2018.
Mars Argo’s Lawsuit Against Poppy & Titanic: SinclairIn April 2018, Mars Argo filed a lawsuit against both Titanic Sinclair and Poppy, accusing Sinclair of years of abuse and claiming that he had used Poppy to copy her entire artistic identity. The lawsuit alleged that:
• Sinclair had physically and emotionally abused Mars Argo, stalking and harassing her even after their breakup.
• He pressured her to continue working with him and reacted violently when she refused.
• After she left, he recreated her persona with Poppy, copying her style, voice, and artistic concepts.
• Poppy participated in this copying, allegedly benefiting from Sinclair’s attempt to erase Mars Argo’s original contributions.
The lawsuit presented side-by-side comparisons of Mars Argo’s past work and Poppy’s newer content, showing striking similarities in music, fashion, and themes.
Settlement and Fallout: In September 2018, the lawsuit was settled out of court. While the exact terms were never disclosed, it is believed that Mars Argo received some form of compensation, and both parties agreed to drop legal actions. After the settlement, Mars Argo returned to making music, releasing the song Angry in 2018.
Did Poppy Ever Apologize to Mars Argo?
No, Poppy never publicly apologized to Mars Argo. Instead, she remained mostly silent about the lawsuit while it was ongoing. However, in late 2019, Poppy announced that she had severed ties with Titanic Sinclair, accusing him of manipulative and toxic behavior. She stated that she had been controlled and mistreated, echoing some of the claims Mars Argo had made about him years earlier.
Even after Mars Argo’s lawsuit was settled, Poppy continued using the aesthetic and persona that had drawn direct comparisons to Mars.More controversially, Poppy was seen liking social media comments from fans that dismissed Mars Argo’s claims, including ones that said things like "We don’t care about Mars Argo." This behavior suggested that rather than showing any remorse, Poppy was doubling down and aligning herself with those who disregarded Mars’s allegations.
