I’m not sure when exactly this happened, but I think it’s clear that the aro community really is a community, now.
For the longest time I’ve felt like we were still in stasis, not quite there; a proto-community, yes, but not quite a community. But we have more history now to lean back on, more of each other to talk to and laugh with and cry with and learn from. More people that’ll go forward and make a part of modern aro history. More people that believe us, believe in us, will stand with us if we ask them.
I wouldn’t consider myself an aro elder yet, though each year I’m surprised at how long aromanticism has been a part of my life, how long I’ve been free of doubt or insecurity about my aromanticism, how far we’ve come since I was questioning. Then again, when I was questioning, some of the people I looked up to for guidance were probably close to the age I am now, so I might be there sooner than I think.
And, I’m so so hopeful for all aros, young or old, new or not, because we’ve come so far. Day by day, progress is slow (and yes, it’s unfair, it should be so much faster), but looking back it feels fast. We are our own role models, the people we look up to for guidance. We carve our own path through life, making things up as we go. I used to find that terrifying, because I had no idea what the future would bring. But it’s actually amazing, because I can ignore all these silly “rules” and guidelines about what my life should be, and instead ask, “what do I want my life to be?”
Younger me, you have no idea how awesome your future is gonna be. I’m sorry about the pain and hardship you’ll go through first; it won’t be fair and you shouldn’t have to deal with it. But you’ll make it through, and one day you’ll be me. I can’t wait for you to get here.
#aromantic#aro#aspec#queer#lgbtq#original#text#can't believe i was busy on a day when aromantic got super trending#also on the topic of history: history is super important and we should make sure we're good custodians of it!#make backups of your tumblr blogs/wordpress sites/fanfiction/analytical essays/whatever!#save links into the internet archive/wayback machine!#future aros will thank us for every thing we save from link rot#current aros will thank us for keeping our resources alive and accessible

gay beatles slash fanfiction has existed since beatlemania, unsurprisingly. so here's some stuff on that topic

"The most visible rock based BandFic community during this era is The Beatles. On August 18, 1960, The Beatles started playing under that name for the first time at an event in Hamburg, Germany. (Whelan) It would be four more long years before the band would make their American debut, an event that occurred on February 7, 1964 when they arrived in New York City for their first American tour. (Whelan) According to Barbara Ehrenreich, Elizabeth Hess, and Gloria Jacobs in their essay "Beatlemania: Girls Just Want to Have Fun," this event marked "the first mass outburst of the sixties to feature women – in this case girls, who would not reach full adulthood until the seventies and the emergence of a genuinely political movement for women’s liberation." This group, composed primarily of middle class, white teenagers, would form one of the core groups in the nascent bandfic community. In their adulation of the band, they would create many of their own fan related products including stories, zines and art. The fannish oral tradition that is alive today is implicit in the existence and circulation of fictional stories about band members during the early years of the band's history. Because the audience was young and not connected into a professional or underground movement, much of the material created by this group of fan girls never was published. The production, in most cases, likely consisted of one to five copies of a story being circulated only among the fan’s immediate peer group. The emergence of The Beatles, their popularity and their fans dedication to creating fan works was helped because of the era in which they appeared. The Beatles were at the forefront for many white, middle class teenage girls in helping them redefine their own definition of sexuality and their own definitions of what it meant to be female. (Ehrenreich) This was taking place in an era where there was that increased debate on subjects like "birth, a woman's obligation to society, and conception, bringing with it all of the bitterness and acrimony that have long surrounded these issues, beginning with perhaps the most obvious one of them all -- Sexism." (Rowland) Legal gender differences between men and women were beginning to fall. (Rowland) For young, white, middle class female Beatles fans, writing stories about the band was an opportunity to challenge their parents, to revel in the new ideas regarding male sexuality, to explore their own and more. They could write about marrying Ringo or having children with Paul McCartney. They could write about being noticed by the George Harrison at a concert and all that followed afterward. Most fans knew that none of those scenarios were likely to happen. Some deeply resented the idea of a member of the band becoming involved with any woman because it destroyed their own fantasies. They did not want to see that happen. It is highly probable, that given this and the fact that they were writing fictional stories featuring the Beatles, that some of the Beatles were written as homosexual if only as a way to ensure that the object of the fan's lust, since they could not be hers, would never belong to another female fan. The idea of writing male on male pairings to cut out other female fans is one that would reappear again and again during the next forty years as new bands were discovered and attracted new groups of young female fans." "Bots on the internet are nothing new, but a sea change has occurred over the past year. For the past 25 years, anyone running a web server knew that the bulk of traffic was one sort of bot or another. There was googlebot, which was quite polite, and everyone learned to feed it - otherwise no one would ever find the delicious treats we were trying to give away. There were lots of search engine crawlers working to develop this or that service. You'd get 'script kiddies' trying thousands of prepackaged exploits. A server secured and patched by a reasonably competent technologist would have no difficulty ignoring these.
"...The surge of AI bots has hit Open Access sites particularly hard, as their mission conflicts with the need to block bots. Consider that Internet Archive can no longer save snapshots of one of the best open-access publishers, MIT Press, because of cloudflare blocking. Who know how many books will be lost this way? Or consider that the bots took down OAPEN, the worlds most important repository of Scholarly OA books, for a day or two. That's 34,000 books that AI 'checked out' for two days. Or recent outages at Project Gutenberg, which serves 2 million dynamic pages and a half million downloads per day. That's hundreds of thousands of downloads blocked! The link checker at doab-check.ebookfoundation.org (a project I worked on for OAPEN) is now showing 1,534 books that are unreachable due to 'too many requests.' That's 1,534 books that AI has stolen from us! And it's getting worse.
"...The thing that gets me REALLY mad is how unnecessary this carnage is. Project Gutenberg makes all its content available with one click on a file in its feeds directory. OAPEN makes all its books available via an API. There's no need to make a million requests to get this stuff!! Who (or what) is programming these idiot scraping bots? Have they never heard of a sitemap??? Are they summer interns using ChatGPT to write all their code? Who gave them infinite memory, CPUs and bandwidth to run these monstrosities? (Don't answer.)
"We are headed for a world in which all good information is locked up behind secure registration barriers and paywalls, and it won't be to make money, it will be for survival. Captchas will only be solvable by advanced AIs and only the wealthy will be able to use internet libraries."
#ugh#AI#generative AI#literally a plagiarism machine#and before you're like “oH bUt Ai Is DoInG sO mUcH gOoD...” that's machine learning AI doing stuff like finding cancer#generative AI is just stealing and then selling plagiarism#open access#OA#MIT Press#OAPEN#Project Gutenberg#various AI enthusiasts just wrecking the damn internet by Ctrl+Cing all over the damn place and not actually reading a damn thing

The thing that gets me about history and humanity is that you never know what is immortalized, and the things that will be immortalized are things you would never think.
I saw a person sharing a new tattoo, and it was one of Onfim's drawings. A boy who lived so long ago he is barely a blip now, but his drawings meant so much to people that somebody is now permanently marked in their skin with one of those drawings. Do you ever look at the things you make and just sit there and wonder if this is the thing that future people look at? Do you ever look at your art, your writing, your schoolwork, or anything that is yours and just wonder who will find it, who will fall in love with a piece of your humanity and become overwhelmed with emotion over? It's not unlikely. It's not totally unlikely that somebody will find a piece of you in the distant future and devoid of any other context of who you were will still love you because you were here. You were here, and you are still here, even hundreds or thousands of years later. Treat yourself with the same love that so many have for dear Onfim.
#positivity#gentle reminders#if anybody has ancient children's drawings beside onfim let me know they melt my heart#i have always wanted a tattoo of that kind of thing too and i want ideas#see if archeologists dig me up or whomever else they won't find significant tattoos or other things. they will see i have loss.jpeg on me#and i think that's just as important. these people must know that people are silly and weird and don't make sense and that's IMPORTANT#i'm just. so obsessed with this because it's instantly humanizing#what little child hasn't drawn humans with twelve fingers per hand#or those kids drawings where it's only a torso/head conglomerate with stick legs and hands#i just really lived seeing how their tattoo turned out because i wasn't sure if it would look good in ink and skin#i feel the same way about archiving the internet. i was looking for the written crochet pattern for something#and the person who wrote and created it passed away and their blog has been scrubbed#their blog only exists on the archives. their pattern is only accessible on youtube because somebody made a video tutorial with the pattern#it's an eerie feeling. they've been gone for two years but their blog has been tethered by the wayback machine

Fanfic authors, please, I implore you, from one writer to another, DO NOT DELETE YOUR WORKS. Change the account ownership, make a different pseud to put it under, anonymise or orphan them, it doesn't matter, just please, please, PLEASE, do not delete them. Please. Even if you think they're badly written, or out of character, or a decade old, or 'cringe', or whatever, there will be some poor schmuck out there who loves what you've written and will cry over its deletion because they forgot to download it. - Sincerely, some poor schmuck who loves what someone wrote and has spent the last ten hours trying to track it down because he forgot to download it.
#ao3#wattpad#fanfiction#archive of our own#fanfic.net#I don't know any more fanfic sites I'm sorry#writing#fanfic writing#No seriously please DO NOT DELETE YOUR WORKS#I've just spent the last ten -- yes. Ten. One zero. Ten -- hours trying to track down this one fic#I'm about to go pull up the wayback machine#If I can see through my tears of course#Please don't delete#What you write is amazing and important and yeah. sure. sometimes it might not be the best thing you've done#sometimes it might be 'cringe' as hell#But please please please it will mean the world to someone anyway#Okay I'm shutting the fuck up now#Go continue procrastinating your latest WIP#I know you motherfuckers#(I *am* you motherfuckers)#I am also now crying#My hopeful traverse into the wild depths of the wayback machine has come to naught#The fic I seek is forever lost to the void of the internet#Reddit or Discord are my only options#Oh Gods. What has the world come to?#I am now crying again for a different reason because THE FIC HAS BEEN FOUND#I AM SAVED#THANK YOU DISCORD PERSON#HOLY SHIT

It seems more and more like if you put your art online, you can't escape having it fed into an ai model. And it seems like more and more the response people are getting when they say they're unhappy about that is "if you care about that, then don't post it online!" What I'm worried about is that.... they will. That artists and writers and fans of all kinds will stop posting their meta and art and writing online, which would spell the end of fandom as we know it. And I would miss it a lot.
#Maybe fandom moves to something like a private lj group or password protected tumblr blog or invite only discords style thing#Something with a higher barrier to entry#And I ask myself - how many people would make it? How many people would know who to ask or where to go?#How would new people find it?#And then - with the way the internet is going would that even work? Or will that end up being fed into the machine too?#Will we lose even that?#Some of this is because I was very very shy when I was young and I lurked and then just reblogged things without comment for years#Before I started to comment and write and talk to people#And there would have been no way for me to get involved or find my way into things without that low entry barrier fandom#I dunno. I guess I just worry it might be the end of an era is all

im actually really good at admitting when i dont know things its just that people keep talking to me about things that i know a lot about and am objectively correct on
#this is a cartoony exaduration of a very real sentiment#whoch is that im often told that i come off like i 'need to be right about everything'#but i have achived a place in my life where i recognize when i dont have all the info or perspective nessesary need to Listen#and that i dont have to have a strong opinon abt everything#and that admitting that i lack knowledge or opinion rather than masking that with false confidence is better in the long run#bc it dosent put you on defense - makes you more receptive to new information + perspectives + corrections#its just that people will try to tell me their opinions about lawn mowers and im not going to pretend like i dont know more than them#when i do. which happens to be all the time#never met a person whos done as much reaserch on lawns + lawn care industry and related issues such as sore machines#(small off road engines)#i know theyre out there but the chances of me finding them is small and i have yet to do so#and then people try and give me their opinions abt this subject and if THEY dont shut up and listen i go rabid#like i know when its my turn to shut up and listen but sometimes im right and OTHER people need to be shutting up and listening#but also even outside of that i tend to come off as harsh/agressive/judgmental even when relaying info that im not obsessive abt like lawns#its the autism. i just word things blunt and talk with flat affect and dont know how to soften the blow well when correcting people#or even just adding my own perspective + ideas to convo without intent of 'correcting' anyone#such is life i suppose#just so long as nobody tries to tell me lawns are ethical ill be fine#<- remembers when i made a post that accidently got attention abt this subject and melted down#bc the strangers on the internet dont understand that this is my WHOLE THINF#if you knew me in real life youd understand. its my passion#text#im putting this is the lawn tag actually#lawn posting

This is just old Boomer advice and it’s kinda like saying “if you have to join a cult, join Scientology.”
The Air Force uses the exact same pay scale and benefits as every other branch. Troops living in condemned base housing isn’t just an Army thing, either. Also the PT thing isn’t even true like it was in the 1990s.
The fact that the Air Force enlisted are generally more likely to be technicians, medical and administrative personnel rather than combat arms will give you decent odds of not getting shot, but it will often not protect you from completely fucking up your physical and mental health through grueling shift work hours, the drinking culture, and subjecting you to the absolutely insane abuses of military hierarchy.
#I know the correct Leftist Thing to do is go on about the imperial murder machine but#if you are getting advice like this when you're of enlisting age and desperate#you can't eat the approval of strangers on the internet

I hate that there are entire slices of the internet that are no longer accessible because Flash is dead
#my diary#I have like a memory of these animated music videos that were submitted as part of Gorillaz's Search for a Star contest back in 2004#and I've NEVER seen the two specific videos I'm thinking of anywhere else#and I don't remember who made them#so I tried to see if I could find them again via the wayback machine and sure enough the website doesn't work because of flash#ruffle isn't working (I assume it doesn't work w/ archived web pages)#so basically I'm just fucked because the world is fucked#we talk a big game about how burning the library of alexandria was one of the worst things ever#the library of alexandria is on fire in front of you right now you don't fucking care#internet archive lost 500k items today because of copyright#probably the vast majority of my adolescent internet experience is wiped off the face of the earth#it's so fucking devastating I hate it to death

it never ceases to amaze me how the younger generations just literally think """content""" falls from trees for them and they have no appreciation for anyone who cultivates anything in spaces online. like the education system is so fucked man flkdsj... media literacy is dead...
