Not Rocky, only sucky — A record of the unauthorized use of my photo in Oliver Clegg’s work

This article documents the events surrounding the unauthorized use of one of my photographs in a work named Rocky by Oliver Clegg, from the initial discovery through to the current situation.

Please consider this a formal report for those who have supported me.

September 7, 2021

I posted a photo of my cat Kofuku and Mr.J.

At the time, someone even made a pixel art version of it, and many people enjoyed it together.

January 2023

A kind follower sent me a mention to a post introducing a “work” by Oliver Clegg.

Clegg later claimed he had tagged my Instagram, but in fact he had created a brand-new tag called “straycatmrj.” This has also been documented.

By that point, someone had already annotated his work via Hypothesis, raising questions about his use of materials.

February 2025

The traced work resurfaced. I began an investigation.

That same month, I consulted a lawyer through an initiative supported by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs:

Bansou.Support – a legal support service for copyright infringement and similar issues on the internet.

I was informed that:

Because the image is viewable online from Japan, this constitutes copyright infringement under Japanese law.

In my case, this use clearly does not fall under fair use.

My rights are protected internationally under the Berne Convention, regardless of the creator residing in the United States.

April 2025

Once again, I saw another traced work posted.

The uploader promptly removed the post and even issued a follow-up to explain the situation. I deeply appreciate their response.

However, the traced image continued to be reblogged.

I decided to follow through on my prior consultation and contact the gallery representing Mr. Clegg.

April 30, 2025 (JST)

I contacted the gallery directly.

A lawyer had advised that “this kind of issue is often treated seriously as a matter of credibility by galleries, so it’s worth contacting them.”

However, I received no response—perhaps because I am merely a Japanese individual blogger.

May 3, 2025 (JST)

I sent a follow-up message, stating that unless I received a response by the close of business on May 6 (EDT), I would make the findings public.

May 7, 2025

With no reply, I published the facts and timeline on Tumblr.

Many people offered support. However, I also witnessed comments that ignored all legal context, and some individuals spread false assumptions and slander.

Such baseless speculation only reveals more about the mindset and behavior of those making it.

I would like to take this opportunity to again express my sincere gratitude to those who responded respectfully and supported me.

May 8, 2025

24 hours later, with more response than expected, I published a follow-up thank-you note in the form of a reblog.

May 9, 2025 (Night)

60 hours later, I discovered that the relevant Tumblr tags were no longer functioning.

I suspected a technical issue—or possibly a report by someone connected to the other party.

I contacted Tumblr Community Support, and they responded promptly, stating that the issue had been resolved and would be reflected within 24 hours.

Shortly thereafter, the tag search functionality returned to normal.

May 10, 2025

72 hours later: search results had shifted.

Tumblr Search When searching for the artist’s name, I noticed that the specific work featuring my cat no longer appears in search results.

Google Image Search The image now appears to be filtered under SafeSearch.

Once again, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported and stood with me.

Thanks again to everyone who helped clarify the origin of the image.

Nirvana - Rape Me 1993

"Rape Me" is a song by the American rockband Nirvana, written by vocalist and guitarist Kurt Cobain. It is the fourth song on the band's third and final studio album, In Utero, released in September 1993. Often interpreted as a commentary on fame, "Rape Me" was written shortly before the release of the band's breakthrough album Nevermind, and was intended to be a lyrically literal anti-rape song. However, the song's bridge was written several months later, and does contain lyrics that reference the struggles Cobain and his wife, Courtney Love (poll #579), faced with the media following Nirvana's mainstream success. As Cobain explained; "It was actually about rape … but now I could definitely use it as an example of my life for the past six months or year, easily." The song's title and lyrics led to MTV blocking Nirvana from performing it at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards, before it had been released, and also contributed to In Utero initially not being sold by American big-box stores Walmart and K-Mart.

In a 1993 Rolling Stone interview, Cobain addressed the song's controversy, saying that he had "gone back and forth between regretting it and trying to defend myself", and that he "was trying to write a song that supported women and dealt with the issue of rape". When asked by MUCH in an August 1993 interview how the band was helping to raise awareness about sexism, Cobain replied, "By writing songs as blunt as 'Rape Me'." He stated that the lyrics were meant to be so direct that no one could misinterpret the song's meaning.

The song was released as the album's second single in December 1993, packaged as a double A-side with "All Apologies". It reached number 32 on the UK Singles Chart, and was the band's final single before Cobain's suicide in April 1994. The single was not released commercially in the US. It was relabeled "Waif Me" on the censored Walmart and Kmart version of In Utero, released in March 1994. The chain stores had originally refused to carry the album because of the song's title, as well as the fetus collage on the back cover, which was also edited. Cobain defended the band's decision to release a censored version of the album by explaining, "One of the main reasons I signed to a major label was so people would be able to buy our records at Kmart. In some towns, that's the only place kids can buy records."

"Rape Me" was parodied by American animated sitcom The Simpsons in the January 2008 episode "That '90s Show", which featured the song "Shave Me" being performed by Sadgasm, a grunge band fronted by lead character Homer Simpson, in the early 1990s. It also featured "Shave Me" later being parodied by guest star "Weird Al" Yankovic as "Brain Freeze".

In October 2021, the American drama series Succession used "Rape Me" in the episode "The Disruption" when Kendall ordered his assistants to play the song on the speakers to counter Shiv addressing the sexual assault allegations towards Waystar Royco. Courtney Love praised the show's use of the song in an Instagram post, saying that she had "never been so proud of approving one of Kurt's songs" and that it was "as if they truly understood" the song's meaning.

"Rape Me" received a total of 79,8% yes votes! Previous Nirvana polls: #118 "The Man Who Sold the World", #367 "Drain You".

The number of children who died before their fifth birthday has reached a historic low, dropping to 4.9 million in 2022. The report reveals that more children are surviving today than ever before, with the global under-5 mortality rate declining by 51 per cent since 2000.

4. April - Restoring sight is possible now with optogenetics

Max Hodak's startup, Science, is developing gene therapy solutions to restore vision for individuals with macular degeneration and similar conditions. The Science Eye utilizes optogenetics, injecting opsins into the eye to enhance light sensitivity in retinal cells. Clinical trials and advancements in optogenetics are showing promising results, with the potential to significantly improve vision for those affected by retinal diseases.

5. May - Vaccine breakthrough means no more chasing strains

Scientists at UC Riverside have demonstrated a new, RNA-based vaccine strategy that is effective against any strain of a virus and can be used safely even by babies or the immunocompromised.

6. June - Bill Gates-backed startup creates Lego-like brick that can store air pollution for centuries

The Washington Post detailed a "deceptively simple" procedure by Graphyte to store a ton of CO2 for around $100 a ton, a number long considered a milestone for affordably removing carbon dioxide from the air. Direct air capture technologies used in the United States and Iceland cost $600 to $1,200 per ton, per the Post.

7. July - Stem cell therapy cures man with type 2 diabetes

A 59-year-old man had been suffering from diabetes for 25 years, needing more and more insulin every day to avoid slipping into a diabetic coma and was at risk of death. But then Chinese researchers cured his disease for the first time in the world. The patient received a cell transplant in 2021 and has not taken any medication since 2022.

8. August - Chinese drones will fly trash out of Everest slopes

Come autumn, Nepal will deploy heavy lifter drones to transport garbage from the 6,812-metre tall Ama Dablam, south of Everest. This will be the first commercial work an unmanned aerial vehicle does in Nepal’s high-altitude zone.

9. November - Tokyo to make day care free to boost birth rate

Tokyo plans to make day care free for all preschool children starting in September, the city governor has announced as part of efforts to boost Japan's low birth rate.

10. October - FTC Rule Banning Fake Product Reviews Takes Effect With Stiff Penalties

Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chair Lina Khan announced on Oct. 21 that the agency’s prohibition on fake online reviews was taking effect, imposing fines as high as $50,000 for violations. Khan encouraged followers to report the proscribed practices at reportfraud.ftc.gov.

11. November - Bumblebee population increases 116 times over in 'remarkable' Scotland rewilding project

The bumblebee population has made an impressive comeback in a developed area by increasing to 116 times what it was two years ago thanks to a nature restoration group.

12. December - Spain to enshrine gay marriage and abortion rights into its constitution so 'they cannot be undone in the future'

The left-wing PSOE leader made the announcement at an event marking the 46th anniversary of the Spanish Magna Carta.

“We believe that these are rights that we must protect in the Constitution so that no one can touch them in the future,” Sanchez said in a statement in parliament on Friday.

I don't know if anyone asked you this before, but how did you meet Pangi?

I was doing a YouTube stream where I was playing on my Public Factions Server in late January 2021. I got a donation from Pangi asking if I could watch his video. He was in my chat with vouches from Chonk and Deehain (the friends he’s with IRL rn) and I was friends with them on an SMP, so since Pangi was friends with them I trusted him. Pangi wanted to get into streaming and had $10 in his PayPal. He wanted to empty it before he started and spend it on something that’d help. His friends said to donate it to me. I watched his video on stream and he says it was shit but I did genuinely find it interesting. From there I added him on discord. We had our first 1 on 1 VC when he asked me if I could help him set up OBS for alerts and stuff. In March 2021 (I think) I raided him on his first ever stream. We recorded a video together where we dueled eachother on Hypixel in like April 2021. I started an Origins server with him and my IRL best friend, and through all of that we became best friends and have been best friends ever since 😁😁

quinn hughes style evolution

On my midnight scroll through Getty Images, I found myself so impressed by Quinn Hughes’ walk in pics, I thought I would do some style evolution! Because he has evolved! Stylistically! And he has great ties.

October 15th, 2019: first one!! So presh. He loves this blue tie, but those shoes don’t remain for much longer. This was the day after his 20th birthday and the start of his rookie year.

November 12th, 2019: New tie alert! I’m in awe of this guys ties back then. They were so fun! The shoes are a better match definitely, and notice how they’re actual dress shoes (“for now,” she said ominously.)

December 19th, 2019: Hilarious gait, for unknown reasons. Also I just want to say I miss this wall, I don’t think it exists anymore, but it was great vibes. So is his tie. Reminds me of the one Luke wore to the awards show. The Canada Goose toque is a little silly but they were VERY big that year. I bet he got it at Holtz-Renfrew- the Vancouverites ate up all the Canada Goose

July 29th, 2020: Their first playoffs! Very exciting. And so casual due to the bubble nature of it all. Backwards cap, chino shorts, high top Nikes, Petey has the dogs out, I bet they loved this.

December 10th, 2021: his TIE. Bring back fun ties he never has fun ties anymore. Also this current season people were saying how Quinn bought a new coat- WRONG! His double-breasted coat has lived on for seasons! It looks great, he looks great, the pants are a bit ill-fitting, but he’s wearing a pink tie I refuse to complain.

March 4th, 2021: This tie made tons of appearances. I hate it, but I like that he likes it and it actually goes really well with this suit. He looks amazing, would love to have him in my zoom class.

February 19th, 2022: This is very good! Very red carpet-esque, and crispppp

April 3rd, 2022: Not quite sure what’s going on with the suit tucking. But a lovely baby blue tie with matching socks?! Yes yes yes

November 18th, 2022: GREAT tie. The socks do not match unfortunately. The shirt cuffs poking out is a really nice look tho.

December 17th, 2022: The parking garage!! Welcome friend, you do wonders for the lighting and aura. The double-breasted coat looks SO good buttoned up. And I’m very thankful he ripped that toque off for the photo <3

December 19th, 2022: Jeff he does not look like this what is wrong with you.

October 11th, 2023: This is the first time he has not worn dress shoes for walk ins. He will not wear dress shoes for a very long time. The tie will disappear shortly after. There has been a shift in the force.

November 20th, 2023: a grey suit! unfortunately this makes the phone in his pocket extremely visible and a little off-putting. why are his hands clenched

December 9th, 2023: The tie!!! Nothing is really matching here. It’s very funny. But the plaid suit has potential.

January 9th, 2024: WHY are you looking at me like that?? Is it because you were forced into dress shoes again?? You’re not wearing a tie isn’t that enough?

April 23rd, 2024: Playoff form has returned! The shoes: dirty. The tie: in his dresser at home. The shirt: a nice light blue. The finger: suspiciously long. The eyes: haunted!

May 20th, 2024: Game 7, Edmonton, you know the vibes. He wore this outfit every single game for that series and I looked forward to it every single day. Those airforces were the star of the season. But I miss my fun ties. But he has best accessory in the form of his Porsche keys!

November 19th, 2024: The all black yesss!! He has this on his Insta and for good reason. The toque even looks good, but it would simply be top tier unforgivably hot if he had it off for this look. But he looks so good, I hope we see this more.

March 18th, 2025: Bringing us to now. Holy moly. I mean you can just tell the difference from this to the past. His suits fit really amazingly, the colour coordinates so well, he has a matching tie and matched dress shoes (!!!). New haircut, waist on thinna, vibes unmatched, Captain Quinn has never looked better (and to do this when we’re in the trenches?? Thank you sir)
