In the "Stronger than Steele" episode of Remington Steele, which first aired on January 15, 1985, Laura Holt (Stephanie Zimbalist) confessed that she had based the values of Remington Steele (Pierce Brosnan) off of the comic book/TV hero Atomic Man played by Maxwell Donahue (Conrad Janis) that aired from 1961 - 1964 (that was narrated by Jackson Beck who in real life narrated things like G.I. Joe, Tom Corbett Space Cadet, The New Adventures of Superman, the Adventures of Batman, The Superman/Aquaman Hour of Adventure, The Adventures of Superboy, Steve Canyon and was the voice of Bluto in 1950s Popeye cartoons). It was also learned that Laura was a regular attender of Atomic Man conventions and even cosplayed as him. Donahue, who was forever typecast by the role, was upset that Hollywood was making a new version of Atomic Man without him and threatened the director Steven Spooner (Tom Harrison) during a press conference. Soon after, Laura was upset to hear that Donahue was being accused of murdering Spooner. The episode also saw the return of detective Jarvis (Gary Frank). Surprisingly, the annoying practice of tv shows cutting content for commercial space in syndication helped solve the case. ("Stronger than Steele" Remington Steele, TV Event)

Dread by the Decade: La fiancée des ténèbres
👻 You can support me on Ko-fi! ❤️

★★½
Plot: The last of the Cathars, a young woman fears she is cursed to bring death down upon anyone she loves.
Review: Though its performances are solid and its sets are beautiful, this film becomes entangled in its own plot threads and lofty ideas, promising a thrilling climax that never arrives.

English Title: The Fiancée of Darkness Source Material: La mort ne reçoit que sur rendez-vous by Gaston Bonheur Year: 1945 Genre: Occult Country: France Language: French Runtime: 1 hour 32 minutes

Director: Serge de Poligny Writers: Gaston Bonheur, Serge de Poligny, Jean Anouilh, Henri Calef Cinematographers: Roger Hubert Editor: Jean Feyte Composer: Marcel Mirouze Cast: Jany Holt, Pierre Richard-Willm, Édouard Delmont, Simone Valère, Line Noro

-----
Story: 2.5/5 - Initially compelling, but fails to deliver, laying the stage for conflicts that never occur. From adultery to mysticism, nothing is concluded, as if the writers confused themselves and threw up their hands.
Performances: 4/5 - Holt is tragic as Sylvie and Delmont is great as a scholar teetering on obsession. Richard-Willm, however, fails to bring much depth to what should have been a conflicted character.

Cinematography: 4/5 - Often striking. Beautiful lighting and wide shots.
Editing: 3.5/5 - Employed really well at one point to induce irony.
Music: 3.5/5 - Solid eerie chanting.
Choreography & Stunts: 3.5/5
Effects & Props: 3.5/5 - Some decent wound and gunshot effects. A few of the old books look cartoonish, though.
Sets: 4.5/5 - The highlight of the film. I cannot stress enough how lovely some of the castle's rooms and caverns look.
Costumes, Hair, & Make-Up: 3/5 - More effort should have been put into making Sylvia look younger in her flashback.

Trigger Warnings:
Mild violence and gore
Brief and very mild sexuality
(Special thank you to Megan for helping me find a copy of this film!!)

sunrise (begins S1E3/early S&B)
Aleksander had sent a messenger ahead of himself, but they hadn’t arrived much sooner than the general himself. That meant Jayn didn’t know about her new charge, the supposed (co)savior-to-be of Ravka, until it was practically too late. She hated appearing inept, when she was anything but. After all, she’d held her position for the past 14 years without much issue. So she met with Aleksander, and once he briefed her on the situation, having already sent four Oprichniki to guard the Sun Summoner, Jayn worked on restructuring her people’s assignments. They were the Shadow Summoner’s guard, so they were supposed to be protecting him, but he’d given preference to Alina Starkov. Jayn did as she was asked.
And then, the morning that the young woman was to be brought before the King (ugh), Jayn went to see the girl herself. She knew she had a window before Genya would come in.
“Miss Starkov,” she called, gently closing the door behind her, “I am Janis Leary-Holt, head of—" She still had to catch herself sometimes, to make sure she didn’t reveal her friend’s identity, “Head of General Kirigan’s Oprichniki. I came to introduce myself, answer what questions you have about Os Alta, and inform you about the day’s events. Your safety and schedule are one of my priorities.” She stood a few feet from the edge of the bed, respectful but with her usual formal demeanor. Her grey uniform was well-kept, a little worn, and without the hat that she hated so much (but for some reason the uniform had been left up to the Lantsovs, not Aleksander). It was time to see what the Sun Summoner had on her mind.

Dread by the Decade: Le Golem
👻 You can support me on Ko-Fi! ❤️

★★★½
Plot: A rabbi and his wife must reawaken a golem to save their people.
Review: Evocative and progressive for its time, Le Golem paints a powerful tale of Jewish persecution and resistance, even if it sometimes focuses too heavily on its villain.

English Title: The Golem Sequel to: Der Golem, wie er in die Welt kam (1920) Year: 1936 Genre: Historical Drama, Supernatural Horror Country: Czechoslovakia Language: French Runtime: 1 hour 23 minutes

Director: Julien Duvivier Writers: André-Paul Antoine, Julien Duvivier, Jiří Voskovec, Jan Werich Cinematographers: Jan Stallic, Václav Vích Editor: Jiří Slavíček Composer: Josef Kumok Cast: Charles Dorat, Jany Holt, Harry Baur, Roger Karl, Germaine Aussey, Roger Duchense, Ferdinand Hart

-----
Story: 3.5/5 - (Note: I haven't seen the first film, but this works as a standalone.) It handles antisemitism, systematic violence, and resistance well. Rachel, the rabbi's wife, and Rudolph, the king, are both especially well written, though too much time is spent with the latter.
Performances: 4.5/5 - Everyone is excellent, but Holt is especially compelling as the steadfast Rachel. Baur also does a great job playing a deeply pathetic but brutal tyrant.
Cinematography: 4/5 - Some lovely long distance shots and creative angles.

Editing: 3/5 - A few premature cuts.
Music: 3.5/5
Effects: 3/5 - The destruction the golem unleashes looks solid, though some effects are subpar for the time.
Sets: 4.5/5 - Fantastic, large, and densely populated.
Costumes, Hair, & Make-Up: 3.5/5 - The make-up for Hart's golem is pretty decent and stone-like, and the costuming is quite good.
youtube
Trigger Warnings:
Moderate violence
Torture (brief; not graphic)
Extreme antisemitism (critiqued by the film)
Attempted ethnic cleansing (critiqued by the film)
Gendered violence
