Opposition to women’s rights has helped fuel authoritarian movements in Russia, Hungary, Brazil, and the United States. That the same is true in South Korea, which is holding an early presidential election tomorrow, is perhaps less well known. There, the role of anti-feminists is particularly stark, helping to put women’s issues at the very center of the country’s fraught contest.
To appreciate the stakes, recall that just a few months ago, South Korea nearly lost its democracy: On December 3, then-President Yoon Suk Yeol shut down the Parliament, banned all political parties, and suspended the free press. His power grab was swiftly defeated by mass demonstrations and a heroic parliamentary effort—members climbed fences to reach the chamber, where they unanimously voted to lift martial law—but the shock remained. Why was a country known for technological prowess, slick horror films, and dreamy boy bands descending into chaos?
The answer lies in part with the country’s struggle over women’s rights. Even as South Korea has raced ahead economically, gender equality has lagged behind other indicators. Out of 146 countries indexed by the World Economic Forum, South Korea comes 112th in women’s economic participation and 100th in women’s educational attainment (only slightly better than Iran).
For longer than it has had a democracy, South Korea has had a women’s-rights movement pressing to improve these conditions. In the late 1980s, a labor activist named Kwon In-sook filed charges against the government for sexual assault she allegedly suffered at a police station. Dozens of women’s organizations came together to support her in a coalition known as the Korean Women’s Associations United. KWAU wound up playing an important role in the country’s democratic transition, and Kwon herself served as a member of Parliament until last year.
In recent decades, women’s rights have advanced steadily, if slowly. Advocates successfully pushed for sexual- and domestic-violence legislation in the 1990s. In 1999, they managed to abolish a system that awarded extra points on civil-service exams to military veterans, who are overwhelmingly male due to South Korea’s male-only conscription. They got rid of the hoju family-registration system, which automatically counted men as the heads of households.
But legislative advocacy has not eradicated violent crime against women, a grim reality that has spurred a particularly dramatic upsurge in women’s activism in the past 10 years. In 2016, a woman was murdered near the world-famous Gangnam metro station in Seoul by a man who complained about being “ignored” by women. In 2019, a criminal network implicated K-pop stars, corrupt police officers, and elite businessmen in a slew of crimes—among them, administering date-rape drugs and nonconsensually filming sexual encounters to distribute online. South Korean feminists have demonstrated against gender violence and objected to its glorification in popular culture. In 2015, for example, Maxim Korea featured a “bad guy” theme on its cover: A man was shown smoking by his car with a woman’s legs, bound at the ankles, jutting out of his trunk. “Girls like ‘bad guys’?” the story demanded. “This is a real bad guy. Are you dying to love it?”
In recent years, some elements of the South Korean feminist movement have attracted attention for their radicalism; others, for their media-savvy tactics. Adherents to the 4B movement refuse to date, have sex with men, marry them, or have children (these tenets all start with bi, which roughly means “no” in Korean). In 2018, in an action called Escape the Corset, women threw out cosmetic products and cut their hair—making headlines in a country where about a third of women in their 20s have had plastic surgery, largely to meet exacting beauty standards. That same year, a news anchor became the first woman in her field to wear eyeglasses on major-network TV.
The ever-higher profile of the feminist movement has inspired right-wing forces to present themselves as the champions of disgruntled men. The story is a familiar one: South Korea has some of the classic problems of an industrialized society, including a housing crisis affecting young people, a declining birth rate, and a short supply of well-paying jobs. Anti-feminist forces have galvanized supporters by blaming these problems on women and feminists.
The gambit has worked. In 2016, anti-feminists went after the actor Kim Jayeon, who voiced one of the characters in the popular Korean video game Closers, because she wore a T-shirt that read girls don’t need a prince. A backlash among gamers led the company to fire her. The episode spoke to a broader phenomenon in South Korean society. According to one poll, a whopping 79 percent of men now believe they are being discriminated against because of their gender.
Much as Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro did in 2016 and 2018, respectively, Yoon capitalized on men’s grievances in his 2022 run for president, using anti-feminism as a cudgel against the outgoing center-left president. In his campaign, Yoon promised to abolish the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family. He repeatedly claimed that South Korea did not have a misogyny or gender-violence problem. His wife, Kim Keon-hee, mocked victims of sexual assault in a highly circulated YouTube interview. Gender issues became central to the campaign, and the young male voters Yoon attracted formed a base of support as he swung toward authoritarianism.
Yoon was impeached after his aborted December coup, but South Korea’s political crisis did not end there. Only on April 4, when the constitutional court upheld his impeachment, was Yoon formally removed from office. His party is in turmoil over his legacy and only recently settled on its candidate for tomorrow’s election. The Democratic Party is running Lee Jae-myung, the same candidate Yoon faced in 2022, and he is now the front-runner.
Lee mostly shied away from women’s issues when he ran against Yoon in 2022, but this year, he has promised to empower the gender-equality ministry. In the past, he has rebuked Yoon for claiming that there is no gender inequality in South Korea; he has also promised to reduce the gender-wage gap, strengthen laws against stalking and dating violence, offer free HPV vaccines to adolescents, and establish a system for reporting and monitoring businesses with discriminatory employment practices. Feminists will likely support him to prevent the right’s return to power. Kim Jae-yeon of the Progressive Party ran to become “South Korea’s first feminist president,” but she ended her campaign on May 9, asserting that the priority should be to “deter far-right insurrectionist power from seizing presidential authority again.” She has endorsed Lee.
With the disarray on the right, Lee stands a good chance of winning the presidency. If he does, he would do well to remember that South Korean democracy will be preserved not by appeasing anti-feminists, but by devising solutions to real problems, such as the cost-of-living and urban-housing crises, that gave an opening to demagogues like Yoon in the first place.

Arknights is having it's Rainbow Six Siege collab in approximately 3 months. If you're interested in getting to know the game, and later when the collab happens, you'll be able to get a few familiar faces playable.

What is Arknights? Arknights is a free-to-play tactical tower defense game with character collecting features.
"Easy to understand, hard to master", as a tower defense game with high difficulty content, different game modes, and many characters to collect, Arknights offers an unique gameplay experience where you make use of your various operators to make the decisions to win. The game is available in Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese (Taiwan server) Japanese, Korean, English (Global server). The event that introduces the Siege operators has passed in the CN server, but JP, KR and Eng servers will be having the collaboration event at the same time (approx. 8-9/24), and presumably on the TW server a few months later of that.
Collab? Siege operators featured in Arknights are Ash, Tachanka, Frost, Blitz, Ela, Fuze, Iana and Doc. You can get Tachanka and Fuze by playing the event (Operation Originium Dust for Tachanka and Operation Lucent Arrowhead for Fuze). Other characters are split in headhunting banners, where you have to roll for the opportunity to acquire them, separated as Ash+Frost+Blitz and Ela+Iana+Doc.

Ash and Ela are 6-stars, highest rarity in the game while the others are 5-stars, second highest rarity in the game. The acquisition probability for these characters is 2% for the 6-stars and 8% for the 5-stars. If you fail to get a 6-star after rolling 50 times, the 2% chance will go up by 2% every time you do not get a 6-star (51st roll will have a 4% and your 52nd roll will have 6% chance and so forth.) The chance to acquire the characters is 50%, however if you reach 120 rolls you will automatically acquire Ash/Ela and once per banner, if you get one of the two 5-stars, the next 5-star will automatically be the other 5-star (e.g., you get Frost, then the next 5-star is guaranteed to be Blitz).
Why now? Arknights is estimated to have the collab in a few months (which should have in-game content for Siege as well). Arknights does require some time investment to get to a point where you can play through all of the content that the collab will provide. With six of the playable Siege operators being gacha-exclusive, this will give you ample time to save up. (If you do not save up, you can still acquire the characters, but this will take up a lot of your time compared to starting earlier and saving up.)
How difficult? Arknights has many different types of gameplay, but you don't need to play all of them straight away. The game starts relatively easy, explaining the gameplay principles and later adding various gimmicks to overcome. If you are struggling with a specific stage, Arknights has an active community providing guides and tips.
Platform? Arknights is a mobile game available through Apple Store and Google Play but it's also available for pc through Google Play, or with an emulator like BlueStacks. The gameplay is as easy as on a mobile device or on PC.
Anything else? The event will feature costumes for Ash, Tachanka, Ela, Iana and Doc. These are purely cosmetic items (new illustration and a different character model and different effect animations). But if you want those as well, it's reccomended to start saving for those.
Ending note, while Arknights offers an unique and fun gameplay experience as well as good music and story, if you are prone to lootbox/gacha spending issues in relation to in-game purchases, I would not reccomend the game. While Arknights is seen as a "better than average" gacha, it is still a game that lives on micro-transactions. You can enjoy the story, soundtracks and gameplay content through many content creators found online.

went out and that was okay, my gf and her mom had a minor thing happen, my gf was able to buy 2 labubus the other day, she was talking about that being a flex (i will say out of all the blindbox trend things labubu is the most understandable since it is the cutest of them (beyond understandable, really, i am happy she got it/that they make her happy)), and her mom was like, you shouldn't buy those you should give me gas money, which is understandable in most ways except for when you wonder about how unpleasant she can be to her daughter etc., she says things that are rational or even would be right to do for her, but in such a way that reinforces her daughter being not giving with her. she really does say things to her to make her start fighting her, it feels like. this is a problem in her family, it doesn't seem like anyone knows how to ask for anything nicely, they all say it's because they're from the east coast, but it mostly seems like this weird interpersonal issue that comes from parental abuse.

i woke up and found this in the living room area... the ominous brown bag full of labubu trash basically, like the boxes they came in. i don't know why it was left there like that. this is how my girlfriend is. she came in after i fell asleep.

one of the places we went today was the bookstore downtown, i saw this book of writing by bataille i'd never seen before but i think contains some stuff i must have read before in visions of excess, though the stuff i saw in here was new to me. the first essay here is him calling andre breton a castrated lion. rather good, there's some copies online... to procure... so i will do that to read through more of it. interested in how he attacks breton, as some of breton's mysticism does take on an overtly religious/mythical/reverent pose, it frustrates me despite liking all i read of mad love, or, most of it, and taking some trouble with what i think has to be read against/read in a difficult way, where it seems as if he really is expressing that one ought to believe in a kind of magic of desire rather than what i think what bataille more accurately expresses and what he expresses along the underside of his writing, that desire finds its way to adore anything that we uncover, that we are objects who may pervert our surroundings in some sense, objects who invent the air around ourselves, in a way. this is less magical and expresses too the cruelty of our goings-on well, and why who we love may vary so greatly, and why our selves can take such great leaps and why we might see odd angles and hard light and terrible weather and find our hearts drowning in a frothing need to join ourselves with those things, as well as take shelter, in short the oddness of things is perhaps avoided by breton, at least by some measure, at least to the extent that bataille approaches things.
what we did get at the book fair was a bunch of things, i got an autofiction collection, because br yeager is in it, put out by archway editions. we also got a large collection of stuff by baudelaire, fragments and prose poems and things, very interested in that. my gf also got a book by william gass, which i should also see, and some virginia woolf, and some very bad looking book about instagram basically, that she got to laugh at.

the last place we went into today had this in it. it was a korean supermarket but it had a cosmetic store attached. i was just very charmed by this packaging... helltornado shampoo.
oh that reminds me of nmh, which i played more of today, the sidequest stuff is getting more necessary, not that i didn't do it but you have to grind a touch more at the point i'm at, which was rank 5-4, today. the fakeout is great, a good moment and complication of the story, henry is a great character, he kind of looks like my dead friend, which was interesting to think about, my dead friend loved suda's games, he killed himself before getting to every play 3, i was always really curious what he'd think about it.
anyway, the stuff with henry is great, i love him. i also really liked harvey and travis, that fight was really cute i feel like, that's the best way to describe it, true moe slapstick, it only gets upsetting when travis blinds him and he keeps screaming for the lights to turn on. i almost wish that hadn't happened, the cute 'we will kill eachother without any animus' feeling the fight had was perfect for the magician theming, i feel like. although, so is the random eruption of actually scary cruelty. which is i guess the point, and i like that point... all things need tension, i guess there is just some strange fujoshi part of me that sees travis so excited to go onstage, and harvey calling him a nasty boy, and i find it moe.
here is something from bataille in the book, now that i have collected it, this resonates with me, it's from his essay 'on surrealism' which seems to be a response to a piece written (by camus it seems?) about surrealism, it seems to go through various writers/figures involved and his relation to them, but there is this piece which exceeds the confines of such intent, i imagine the whole of it essentially does as well but i was just reading his introduction and this wowed me, with how near it feels to my heart:

i wonder about loving him too much, or something like that. his failure, at points, to accomplish anything, at times directionless thinking, his existence a pyrrhic thing, but all things feel that way to me, i suppose for things as futureless as i am, this is all there is.
oh right, today something happened in vegas, right, or was it yesterday, a guy blew up in his cybertruck. it seems like a suicide at this point, at the entrance to trump tower. what an odd way to decide to go, if it was suicide. if it was anything pointed, i don't know, it seems profoundly misguided. when i heard about it though, and that there were 'firework style mortars' in his truck, i really just thought he got illegal fireworks and left his car in the entrance and the battery caught fire and exploded, i didn't even know if anyone was injured. it seemed like an almost slapstick disaster.

seeing some people's reaction to weird gamer men oversexualizing kiriko is "mauga is right there, half naked, with serveral pin-up sprays" and while i do agree to an extent, i do feel like alot of people are kind of ignoring like. the racial element of mauga's sexualization, like i like mauga, he's hot, but the second i saw him in the short story, i wasn't a big fan of the whole "big savage brown indigenious guy" and it feels like very few people are pointing that out.
RIGHT LIKE. we cannot fix "gamer men fixate on fictional asian girls to a violent degree, usually in a racist way or enabling racist tropes already present in the character" with "gamer girls fixate on fictional brown men to a violent degree in a racist way or enabling racist tropes present in the character" like you guys are part of the same problemmmmmmm youre doing the same thinggg its not better because youre doing it to men like.
i think some people only want to see the kiriko problem as misogyny and while im not going to even pretend that ISNT a massive part of it, theres still like. a reason kiriko and d.va and mei are fascinations for these dudes. there is a pointed difference between the way these three get spoken about compared to their white counterparts (and their dark-skinned counterparts too - look at the responses to illari for a really easy comparison to how kiriko is treated). their ~exoticism~ as asian women is part of the appeal. even if you dont just wanna take the way dudes online treat them (like making a joke that shes "obvious pornbait" for speaking japanese and using JSL) as evidence of that, look at their marketing. kirikos whole thing is atheleisure traditional, shes got her Mystical Japanese Spiritualism Ninja Powers and her magic doggy and they constantly put her in japanese and korean fashion, and dva has been constantly crossing over with korean merch companies. i cant help but notice theres no brazilian IP crossovers or merch launches for lucio, or any attempt to Sell Peru To Gamers for illari. they couldnt even pick a town in Samoa to name maugas map after. these people wouldn't buy that stuff because it's not fetishized in the same way asia is.
but like. a lot of the people trying to Gotcha these racist dudes with an asian fetish just whip out their favourite racist tropes instead and its a really bad look. like you guys dont wanna examine how your examples of The Characters Its Okay To Hypersexualize are all brown? even the people who wanna fuck cassidy dont talk about him like this. or like. fuck if you want a good comparison for mauga lets look at roadhog. big half-naked tank who theyve been playing up a sexual energy/comic relief duology on since day one with racially insensitive cosmetic options. nobody treats it like its completely normal to talk about him that way. the dev team isnt pushing pinups of him out. he isnt flexing his boobs in trailers. hes a white dude*, so he gets the bare minimum dignity of being treated normally. incidentially hot, maybe, but for the most part his character is sold on being cool , funny and scary. mauga is being sold 50% on being a Sexy Rogue Love Interest and 50% on. releasing late. they put in so little effort for him to be anything else despite hyping him up as suuuper significant to the lore and a major gamechanger its almost embarrassing to watch. (this is why that short annoyed me so much for anyone keeping track).

Now, how am I funny?
Honestly, my initial goal when I started to make Red Queen memes was to alter the fandom's perspective of Mare Barrow.
I started posting memes at a time that the Fandom has settled, since the series officially ended a couple of years back. Not a lot of people were posting BUT when they do it's mostly paragraphs of why they HATE Mare Barrow and how she was the WORST FMC they ever read.
And me, being easily hurt and highly protective of my FAVORITE character (it's Mare Molly Barrow, but the way). I wanted to do something about it.
I was not confident at my writing and I didn't want to confront someone with my main argument coming from my emotions.
So I tried posting memes about Mare and other Red Queen characters. I post about two memes every other day.

My main sensory issue with sunscreen is the smell, personally - a lot of sunscreens cause a moderate burning sensation and mild rash/irritation when applied on my face, even ones meant for that purpose, but all of those are also in the (much bigger) category that smells nauseating, so that's a much bigger deal to me.
(For a Very Pale woman who burns Very Easily, this is a Problem.)
However. As a result of finding myself down the BTS fandom rabbit-hole, I eventually stumbled into the wide, wondrous, bewildering world of Korean (and Japanese, to a lesser degree) skincare and cosmetics. (Insert obligatory notes here about toxic beauty standards, modern-day orientalism, etc.) And it turns out, there are so many sunscreen options out there that don't smell awful, or burn when applied, or give me a rash.
Unfortunately, due to regulatory differences, the American formulas sold by these companies have the same problems (from my perspective) as all the other sunscreens I've used. But it is possible to purchase the original Korean formulas through online retailers - so long as you avoid places like Amazon, where knockoff/fake versions are rampant.
