Soundcloud to the Grammys
Soundcloud to the Grammys
Spent Monday watching clips from the Grammys (and contemplating the life of Music Mondays, which I seem its biggest/only fan) and it was really the most feel good I have ever felt about it. As an artist, I have been in the pre nomination phase, where people can vote for you to get to the nomination, but never have paid too much attention after Outkast lost to Steely Dan back in the 90s. There has…

Your EDM Interview: TYNAN & thook On Crafting ‘Voidless’
TYNAN and thook recently pooled their talents to create ‘Voidless,’ a new single for Quality Goods Records. The intensity creativity of the pair shines through immediately on the record, and they are a great match for each other. We grabbed them both for a chat about it, and about what else they have coming up.
Hey guys, good to chat! Can you tell us a little bit about yourselves?
thook: My name is Agon and I like making music that tell stories. Not fairy tales are or simple ideas, but more like epiphanies.
TYNAN: Thanks for having us! Well my name is TYNAN. I’m from Oklahoma. I like weird things and making music.
How would you sum up each other’s musical style?
thook: Kevin has a really good ear for creating basses and synths that I’d imagine come from a 5th dimensional mothership attempting to leave this realm.
TYNAN: As in, how would I describe thook’s style? He’s the king of unorthodox. He mixes dark, off-kilter rhythms with minimalistic, lo-fi sound design to create something that’s truly unique. I’ve yet to find someone that does what thook do better than he does.
What are some of the most important lessons you’ve both learned since you started making music? What have been some of the challenges so far?
thook: Taking time after creating a record to let your ears relax, so you can get a more neutral perspective of how it sounds. This took a while to get right, because if you’re in the studio working for 5 hours, anything sounds dope eventually. But listening two days later you’ll see exactly what’s wrong/right with the beat.
TYNAN: Easy, KISS. Keep It Simple, Stupid. Its something I have to remind myself constantly. I tend to overthink everything, and in doing so I used to meddle with my tracks a little too much. I had to force myself to say “Okay, this track is finished” so I would just stop messing with it. That was the biggest problem for me to overcome.
Do you remember what first got you into wanting to create music? What do you listen to when you’re not making it?
thook: Definitely Knocksteady. I loved the sound and energy from the rappers and the beats coming out of that collective. That inspired me to be apart of something bigger. When I’m not making music, I’m listening to movie scores, TDE, and weird inside. I love anything that can attached to a visual.
TYNAN: I can’t remember what song exactly, but it was probably some 90’s song that my older brothers and sister were listening to. They were a big influence on my early tastes in music.
As lame as it is, I really do listen to just about anything I can. I always love finding some new music in my free time. Recently I’ve been jamming out to the Undertale soundtrack (seriously one of the best soundtracks of all time). My usually go to when I want something to listen to is Fall of Troy, Foxy Shazam, Rise Against, Between The Buried and Me, and other bands like that.
Your new track ‘Voidless’ is racking up the plays. How long did it take you to put together? What was the idea behind the tune?
thook: Only a couple of weeks. We did everything over the internet which can sometimes take a while. This record just worked really well because TYNAN saw the vision early on.
TYNAN: I think it was a few weeks after I started digging into. thook had the basic idea, and I knew from the stems that it could be something special. It was really melodic in the intro/verse, but the drop had such a weight to it. I really wanted to highlight both of those aspects and bring the idea to life.
Are you happy with the end result?
thook: Hell yeah!
TYNAN: Oh, very happy with it.
Lastly, what have you both got coming up next? Can we expect any future collaborations?
thook: A lot of music. I just released a 5-track EP including a collaboration with the legend UZ on his label Quality Goods Records – called Natural Instincts. I’m actually already building my next project which will be more beat tape style; shorter beats, but more tracks on it.
TYNAN: Oh boy, too much to remember. I’ve got two EP’s coming out in the next few months, an official remix for RL grime, tracks with 1788-L (coming very soon), Wooli, Kayzo, Shanghai Doom, sfam, Roxas, and some ones I need to work on. I’ll be joining Ghastly for the last few shows of his fall tour, plus a few other shows lined up in the next few weeks. I’m sure there are more I’m forgetting, but that’s all for the immediate future, haha.
Can you share two of your 2018 highlights?
thook: ‘Forest.’ When I released that song I didn’t realise how much the sound was still new. I’ve heard countless records come out inspired by it and it’s really exciting to see. Natural Instincts is also huge for me. To date, it’s the clearest representation of my style, if there was any doubt before.
TYNAN: Touring Australia and moving my girlfriend down from Minneapolis.

By popular demand, I just uploaded the zen mix i did with dj zo a few years back to YouTube. This is the original mix with all the original spoken word that was removed for the Knocksteady release. It's pretty much a best of Alan Watts collection, with a few cameos from Bruce Leroy to Bruce Lee. Topics range from money to education, to martial arts. All over a various selection of rare groove, breaks and beats. The unabridged Philosopher's Cut. Not for the casual listener...Link in bio. https://www.instagram.com/p/BrqzGVThGqL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=pqbz6x0ufi7h

Greetings true believers, and welcome to the TUESDAY COMMUTE Quality music to listen to on your commute to… well… wherever! …and we back! Wit moar chune for ya headtop, ya dun kno!!! Slightly different vibe, but folks should dig regardless. As always hit me on twitter (@kongquips) with any tweaks or recommendations. Dat link: https://soundcloud.com/kongsongs/sets/tuesday-commute-9-5 Tracklist: 1) Mvstermind “Mali Moola” Let’s get this MONEY!!! It’s Tuesday in September, classes have been kicking for some time, folks that aren’t in school are out working and stacking. As the spirit of the hustle fills the fresh autumn air, I figured I’d kick off today’s commute with some genuine 314 skrill talk from the homie Mvstermind. This song has been buzzing for quite some time in the homestead, along with his “Cusp EP” and visuals that dropped earlier this year (flames btw.) Catchy, quotable flows, with some nice, bouncy yet textured production seems perfect for that Loufest stage! 2) Anderson .Paak & Knxwledge “Get Bigger” Continuing on this theme of elevation, be it financial or otherwise, we slide into some silky ass flows from Monsieur Andy SideStick and Stones Throw’s own Knxwledge! I’d been anticipating this album heavy since “Suede” was leaked(?) on Kinda Neat a few years back. Low and behold, the albums great! This is easily one of the standouts. As crazy as .Paak is with his flows and that buttery smooth hook, this beat is really what does it for me. Just a loop, but that’s really all he needed. Beauty within simplicity. 3) Breezy Lovejoy “Sadie” Speaking of Anderson .Paak, it often amazes me that folks still havent caught on to the artist he used to be. I used to listen this LA based music podcast “KNOCKSTEADY” back in high school. One of their featured artists was this dude named Breezy Lovejoy. With his smooth yet pained voice, and somehow smoother yet complex bars, i was instantly hooked, and had been following ever since. This was from his Penultimate album as Breezy Lovejoy, and one of if not my favorite albums he’s produced. The beats all over this project (which a majority he produced himself… just btw) are fantastic. Fair warning, its not as easy listening as his material as Anderson .Paak, but its amazing regardless. 4) Justin Wallace ft. KOS “Drugs” There's something about this sample that speaks to me. Mid-heavy and lo-if, makes it sound like the dust is affecting the recording, which I love every bit of. Though the rappers themselves to necessarily fit the smooth mood the production provides, they give off the hunger the lyrics show off flawlessly. KOS (who I featured last week as KALIK) is quickly becoming one of my Soundcloud Go-To's. 5) Maudlin Strangers "AIM" Moving on from the curbside dope dealing, to something a little more heavy and upper class. The delayed guitars and fuzzy bass ooze a swagger worn by a certain martini sipping super-spy. The vocals lacing these rhythms hit you with the cold stare of business behind a gun with such an intoxicating attitude, and build to such grandiose that it's hard to not feel like a boss when listening to it. 6) Jonwayne "LIVE from the F**k you" Sometimes the whistle gets old, especially if you're more of the homebody type like Master Wayne here. We start he song with a, seemingly random dude walking up to him trying to get a verse from him while he's eating with his friends, much to Jon's dismay. Annoyed and sick of it, he kicks a beautifully snarky series of bars simply about how he hates when people put him on the spot. The instrumentation here is scarce, which excellently compliments the near monotone MC's tired (in the best way possible) quotes. As much as I wish this song were longer, if works with its album "Rap Album 2" very well. 7) Jimi Tents "MPR" Shouts to Cvnvvn for hipping me to this one. It's kinda sad how refreshing it is to find fresh faces in hip-hop that actually love and care about the art form. The "5 o'clock Shadow LP" is a slapper to say the least, and on every listen this song tends to stick out to me. That could very well be to the... adequate at best (by comparison at least) beat behind, or the fact that Jimi himself shines through it with one of the stickiest hooks on the project. Flow for DAYS, and quotes out the ass as well. When you're not cringing at that 'B Major' line, you gonna be bouncing and nodding your head. 8) Jai Paul "BTSTU" You've heard this song before... I'm almost certain... Drake's covered it, G Eazy has his own version as well. This man was everywhere on the internet for a split second, and rightfully so. This song is absolutely gorgeous!! With its thin yet thunderous percussion and growling basslines (like if dilla heard a clipping record.) Jai himself laces the track with beautiful harmonies and a tales of a sailors homecoming! It's still gives me chills, especially when you think we haven't really heard from him since. 9) MNDSGN "yeah" And to close us out we have some chill vibes from a pillar of the Cali beat scene. This actually is a clip from a Boiler Room show he did a while back, all of which was flames! Some beefy, bouncy drums and a breezy sample to ease you into whatever test is about to come your way! Sorry I'm this late... some technical difficulities with SC and Tumblr's app stopped me from getting it cemented before work. I'm trying to get better at finishing these ahead of time to rectify all of this. Next week we'll have the vibes prompt in the morning for your ride to work or school. Peace & Love -KONG
