wow, this is a long-time thing.

i have tried to look into it as far as i could (not so easy due to not working in the field, a lot of resources are actually gate-kept). And I have come up with litte, sadly.

There's Remo Largo, who's basically THE swiss children and teeange doctor. He started working the field in the 70s and worte some of the most discussed and most influencial books, some of them you can find here: gettextbooks and here abebooks.

Unfortunately, his work has seemingly not been translated at all, which is kinda baffling to me. His main point was basically "leave those children alone" and he regularly got into public arguments with people in charge of our education systems.

Then there's Jesper Juul (Danish, not german), who's wildly controversial. He made a book called "every kid can learn to sleep" which (among other things) suggested to let the baby (!!) cry until it falls asleep from exhaustion. He did write a bunch of other books as well, i read one of them and didn't exactly get a kick out of it. It was still useful to me because i tend to not respect my own boundaries. He also fell victim to the "Alpha Male" theory based on wolves and took it as an example. It might still have a thing or two that are good to have heard, even if it just is to dismiss it educated.

There's a bunch of resources i found which are mostly blogs and websites, but they give a glimpse on the laws and general tipps, might be interesting?

I also found this reddit thread which suggested this podcaster as being something off the "usual gridlines", maybe that might be interesting for you. It's in english, I guess and I haven't had time to listen myself.

There's also the magazine called "Fritz & Fränzi" which has a lot of advice and occasionally picks up controversial topics.

I hope this will give you some input and maybe lead you to more than it. :D

But I have to admit that I'm actually happy to not have to engage in this topic so much anymore, because the whole thing is easily a culture war between (and within) each family.

I still have to figure out whether the fact that I have yet to find a selfhelp book for parents of adolescents that I deem even close to decent stems from my being young and inexperienced or if it's genuinely close to impossible to find a child psychologist who knows what they're talking about

Emmrook at the Opera

In honor of Sylvia confirming Emmrich’s occasionally into a “bold Orlesian opera” (one of the most exciting things to ever happen to me), I wanted to put together this little post on resources for anyone who might be curious about the genre, or want to incorporate it into their fic writing.

It’s going to be a little USA-heavy because I do, unfortunately, live in the land of hamburgers and assault rifles, but the silver lining is that I also live in the country that created this:

The Metropolitan Opera House in NYC has to be one of the largest opera houses in the world, at least partially because of the fact that it was built much more recently than many of the old ones. When it’s full, it fits over four thousand people in it. I once took a tour of the backstage with one of my best friends who told me, partially in jest, “Wow, I’ve never seen you look at your boyfriend the way you’re looking at this building.” I broke up with that boyfriend like a year later, but the Met is my love for life. I love the red velvet on the walls and the seats. I love the giant Marc Chagall paintings. I love the sputnik chandelier. I love the peeling gilt gold on the ceilings, which I often have a perfect view of from my seats in the nosebleeds. The Met is my boo. 

Onto the resources!

If you just want to watch a movie that FEATURES opera but is not specifically an opera:

Moonstruck - Cher tries to invite her fiance’s brother (Nicholas Cage) to her wedding. Can you imagine what happens to Cher and Nicholas Cage next. Features the both of them on a date at the Met Opera (my beloved!) and excerpts from La Boheme. One of my all time fave movies, I identify deeply with Cher’s grandfather in the film. 

Falling for Figaro is a pretty cute romcom about a finance chick who quits her job to pursue her dream of becoming a soprano. 

And listen like the singing in Phantom of the Opera (2004) is. Not great. (I’m sorry Gerard Butler, I loved you when I was twelve.) But the opening sequence of the rolling camera pulls through the opera house as the overture plays will haunt me for the rest of my life. 

If you’ve never seen an opera before, and want to watch one (either online or in person), I recommend starting with one of these:

La Boheme - One of the most popular operas, period. Also, it’s literally RENT. Beat for beat, from ‘will you light my candle’ to ‘la vie boheme,’ it’s RENT, just sung in Italian and set in Paris. (Spoilers, the ending in the opera is more tragic.)

L’Elisir D’Amore - If you like Agnes and Emmrich because you enjoy watching two idiots who are obviously in love with each other pine for each other, this is a good one. Very sweet. One of my faves.

The Barber of Seville - I think this one is very approachable if you think of it as a comic version of Sweeney Todd, if Sweeney had no tragic backstory and Jamie was a young noble. It’s a romance, shenanigans are had, and Largo al Factotum is one of the biggest bops of all time. 

My personal favorites also include Akhaten, La Fille Du Regiment, Le Nozze di Figaro, and Turandot, but your mileage may vary with these—Akhnaten is very contemporary, productions of Turandot sometimes feature some pretty heckin’ yikes orientalism. 

If you want to listen to opera music:

WQXR is NYC’s Classical Music Station. In addition to their regular classical music stream (which is also very good) they have a separate stream of just opera music called Operavore. (I also love New Sounds, but the streams vary wildly and its definitely an acquired taste.)

The Met broadcasts a series of live Sunday radio transmissions every year starting in the spring, available online and also via WQXR.

The Chicago Lyric Opera has a bunch of their live streams archived online.

The Met also has it’s own paid streaming service, which is SPENSIVE on the subscription model, but if there’s something you really want to see and can’t find elsewhere, they allow you to rent single titles for $4.99 each.

I do strongly recommend, if you have any interest at all and have the opportunity, to go see an opera in person. For me it makes such a difference to be there in person, and it’s not as expensive as you might think! Plus, since opera is a dying art and opera houses are desperate for new audiences (at least, in America) there are usually a number of discounted ticket programs. (Again, the list below is super USA centric, I’m so sorry—and of those below, I’ve only been to the Met myself.)

The Metropolitan Opera is the biggest opera company in the US in terms of literally the number of operas they put on a year. Other than a brief break in February, the opera is pretty much in session 5 nights a week, from October through the end of May. 

Family Circle. I love the family circle. I’ve spent so much time in the Family Circle. The acoustics ARE genuinely better up here than they are in other parts of the house, and depending on the opera, tickets in the Family Circle typically go between $26-45 dollars each.

Rush Tickets are available every day online—these are usually seats in the orchestra. I can’t remember exactly but I think these are always $25. 

If you’re feeling ~opulent and looking for a very special date night, the Met also runs a program called Fridays Under 40. It’s a special priced Orchestra ticket for people under 40. Many of the dates also include little parties where they usually have photo booths, charcuterie, etc., and opportunities to meet some of the cast.

The Detroit Opera offers student rush tickets, although it looks like you have to be at the box office in person to get them. 

The Chicago Lyric Opera has discounts for students and 50% off rush tickets.

The San Francisco Opera has a great offer for first-time opera attendees who live in the Bay Area - $20 for two great seats

The L.A. Opera also offers student rush discount tickets, and $30 tickets for attendees under 30 years of age.

I am not aware of any discounts for the Santa Fe Opera but it looks so cool and it’s on my bucket list to go one day <3

Dallas Opera offers student discounts and discounts for attendees 21-45 (although it looks like they’re aksing for a membership fee for the 21-45 program—boooo Dallas Opera)

Not super clear on the specifics, but Houston Grand Opera also offers some kind of Under 40 discount on select performances

Opera Philadelphia, which recently appointed my all-time-favorite opera singer Anthony Roth Constanzo as their director, offers $10 rush tickets and student discounts

Tips for your first time at the opera, if you do go:

A thing I did not know before I started going to the opera is that even though they are sung in foreign languages, there are almost always subtitles. At the Met, these are transmitted to the chair back in front of you and available in a variety of other languages. Other houses often project the titles above or at the side of the stage.

If you don’t want to read and listen at the same time, synopses are almost always available in your program or ahead of time.

The food and drink is expensive and almost always not worth it. When I go to the Met with my friends, I regularly bring in alcohol minis as well as little cheese/meat/fruit plates in tupperware in my purse. We eat these outside the theater at intermission. No one has every batted an eye at me. (Mileage may vary at other theaters.)

I know opera has a Reputation, and I definitely was a little worried at first that I would look out of place and people would be snide to me. I have never found this to be the case. The only reason someone will be an asshole to you is if you have your phone out or are talking during the performance—don’t do that. Keep it in your pocket until intermission and silence your notifications.

Phantasmagoria on social networks

In a world filled with cameras and networks that serve what they capture, a silent image without context is poor communication, just as it is poor erotica if we don't know how to do more to eroticize than just show the body. We tend to be audiovisuals distorted by the environment, but it's not always better to show than to tell. This good advice applies to film scripts, but not to erotica, where it's barbaric to have or appreciate no other resource for it than the explicit image.

Durante la Era del Guano (1830-1876), Perú prosperó económicamente como principal proveedor mundial de guano, pero los ingresos se malgastaron, llevando a una crisis económica. La Bonanza del Caucho (1880-1914) trajo riqueza a la Amazonía peruana, pero la explotación de las comunidades indígenas y la falta de sostenibilidad causaron un rápido declive.

La Bonanza de la Caña de Azúcar (1894-1929) impulsó el crecimiento económico debido a la alta demanda internacional, pero la caída de los precios y la Primera Guerra Mundial afectaron gravemente la industria. Durante la Primera Bonanza Minera (1943-1976), Perú se convirtió en un importante exportador de plata, aunque la economía minera fue vulnerable a las fluctuaciones de precios.

La Bonanza Pesquera (1939-1963) trajo prosperidad gracias a la producción de harina y aceite de pescado, pero la sobreexplotación de los recursos marinos provocó una crisis. Finalmente, la Segunda Bonanza Minera (1990-2011) permitió un crecimiento significativo y atrajo inversiones extranjeras, aunque la economía seguía siendo vulnerable a la demanda internacional de minerales.

Estos ciclos económicos muestran la dependencia histórica de Perú en la exportación de recursos naturales y los desafíos asociados a la falta de sostenibilidad y la volatilidad de los precios internacionales.

Mis pulgas, tras recorrer la historia económica de Perú y observar cómo las bonanzas iban y venían como olas, hemos llegado a una conclusión evidente: la verdadera raíz del problema fue la falta de educación. Perú quedó atrapado en la dependencia de sus recursos naturales porque nunca invirtió lo suficiente en el poder transformador del conocimiento. Mientras otros países apostaban por educar a sus ciudadanos, fomentando la innovación y la diversificación, Perú dejó pasar esa oportunidad. Sin una población educada, las decisiones estratégicas a largo plazo brillaron por su ausencia, y así se desvanecieron esas épocas doradas. ¡Si hubieran invertido en educación, estaríamos contando otra historia! 🐜🐜

I made another demon version of alouqua as promised! I wanted to make her look more demonic than the previous one so I gave her vampire bat characteristics (because of the relationship with Lilith and vampires) apart from giving her other less human characteristics such as grayer skin, bat ears and longer arms than when she is angry They are attached to her wings (like real vampire bats whose wings are attached to their arms), she possesses a sonic scream and becomes stronger by drinking blood.

The lore of this what if is if Lilith had managed to take Alouqua with her to hell, probably being raised as Charlie's older sister, her personality would remain the same and she would refuse to see Lucifer as her father, she is not as resentful towards Lilith as in the original universe but she definitely doesn't like Charlie's redemption project at all, she knows that hell is full of monsters and to survive it you have to become one.

Her relationship with Charlie in this au is relatively better, Alouqua sees Charlie as a girl who she must protect and can give Charlie good advice when she is going through serious problems, but she also infantilizes her for her naivety and is not usually taken seriously the things she says, she thinks the hotel is just a passing interest or a phase that she will get over when she sees how horrible the people of hell are.

After Lilith's disappearance, Alouqua would take her place as queen and this definitely influences her relationship with Charlie, since Alouqua does not want to spend her time on something as impossible as redemption but she gives Charlie resources to let her do her job in peace , she sees Lucifer as a mockery of what should be the king of hell and does not hesitate to make passive aggressive comments about him.

Ella definitivamente se ganó el título de "la reina vampiro" debido a los castigos que aplica a los pecadores que cuestionan su autoridad y no la respetan,básicamente los aplasta hasta volverlos pulpa sangrienta y bebé la sangre que queda o la usa para baños(ella literalmente se baña en la sangre de sus enemigos).

Book Review: “The Big Bad Book Of Botany” by Michael Largo

I absolutely LOVE this book. I’ve read so many different botany books and plant books, but it seems like they’re always divided into two types of books: Plant folklore, or scientific plant info.

This book is groundbreaking on multiple levels, but the main reason is that it’s an excellent resource for both botanical folklore, AND the science of the plant. It includes full black and white illustrations of each and every plant it mentions, as well as context of historical uses in different cultures, and medicinal uses, and lore. “The Big Bad Book Of Botany” is written with witty observations and is (in my opinion) a surprisingly great resource for Green Witchcraft. It’s not written for witchcraft purposes and yet is very applicable to occult practices. Better than Scott Cunningham’s Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs (in my humble opinion). And this is coming from someone who loves Cunningham’s other book on crystals and metals! I found “The Big Bad Book If Botany” at the library, and immediately realized what a gem it was. It is not on my 22nd Birthday list.

(Base Game) Slime Ranching Advice

This is in no particular order, just written as I think of things.

The first 'room' in the dry reef has a secret area to the left that you can access with a bit of skyrim horsing or a jetpack. There you will find your main early source of naturally spawning heart beets. It takes quite a bit of finangling to get back without a jetpack, but it's possible and worthwhile.

Don't use a corral with a solar shield for ranching phosphor slimes. Instead, simply free-range them inside the grotto expansion to the right (relative to your hut) of the ranch, with fruit trees (preferably cubeberries) growing in the plots. You will inevitably lose some plorts to despawning without drones (or even with if you have enough slimes), but it's still pretty worthwhile to me.

In a similar vein to the last tip, don't keep quantum slimes in a corral whatsoever. You can largo them with phosphor slimes and keep them in the grotto (though I don't recommend this(see the fourth tip)), or you can keep them in the overgrowth.

I don't recommend largo-ing two slime types that eat fruit or veggies. Instead, largo them with meat-eating slimes so that you can feed them more readily available food and still get the meat-eating slime's plorts.

If playing on casual mode, digitarr don't spawn in the slimeulation, so feel free to linger as long as you want to capture a full vacpack slot of glitch slimes.

Speaking of glitch slimes, their fruit tree disguises are always unharvestable pogofruit trees (though they sometimes grow cubeberries). If an object (mushroom, slime statue, one of those glowy pink plants in the moss blanket, rock, crystal) isn't there in the overworld that quivers occasionally, it's a pack glitch slimes. Spray it with debug spray to reveal them.

Conserve debug spray. Don't use it to reveal glitch slimes in slime disguise, only to pull object-disguised glitch slimes out of their disguises or to combat digitarr.

Returning to the real world, if you want maximum efficiency, apiaries should only be placed in the glass desert or moss blanket, as they are the two areas that have special apiary resources.

Similarly to tip 8, for maximum efficiency, only place pumps in the glass desert or the dry reef, for the same reasons as before.

Just as with the two previous tips, when maximizing efficiency, drills should be placed in either the indigo quarry or -once again- the glass desert. (Damn the glass desert has so many unique resources. Probably comes with being the final game area.)

Puddle slimes should only be kept in the pool at the docks, as it has more space for puddle slimes and comes with a free rubber ducky.

Keep a corral of pink slimes/pink largos in the plots at the lab, as their plorts are necessary for most gadgets.

Try and avoid crossing from the dry reef to the moss blanket during the night, as the feral phosphor largos there don't spawn during daylight.
