journal number 2: "The Way Forward: Agrarian Reform vs Industrialization"
For a developing nation, I think the main source of our people should come from agriculture. However, due to the lack of owned lands by the farmers they are unable to get the full profit of their hard labor. That is why inequality is prevalent in this country.
Observation
- This problem hasn’t been the latest problem that our country is facing. In fact, this problem roots back to centuries ago. While many bills or movements are going on about proper land distribution and agrarian reform. The utopian dream of many hasn’t been fully achieved. As mentioned before, it is not yet met by the people. 9 out of 10 farmers are working on a farm that they do not own. Because of that, agreements between the owner and the farmer are shockingly unjust as farmers only get 30% of the total profit. While the owner gets 70% of the total profit.
Insight
- Since the Philippines is not as industrialised as compared to the United States or Singapore, many people in the rural area are considered to be in the lower or middle-class citizen in the Philippines. Majority of the total population of the people living in the poverty line are working on our agricultural sector. May it be a farmer or a fisher.  With the saying, “You reap what you sow” is not applicable in our people’s situation. Because fair-share is almost non-existence in our country and many of our hardworking farmers do not have a land to sow on.  As told by Cruz, Land Reform is Equal access, ownership and control over land should be a fundamental right of all men and women. As of 2012, there are a total of 94 million population in the Philippines and one-third of the total population are living in poverty. It is believed for the Focus on the Global South that by having an agrarian reform can alleviate property by having social justice, by having to receive a fair share of their labor between the farmers and the owner and a retribution of land. If a farmer is able to own a land, they will have a job security. It is important that we fight for farmers to have their own land as they will have the right to do whatever with their own land, provide food for their families, afford an education for their children, and providing a house for their family. It is obvious that no matter if you are living in the “greatest country in the world,” there are still people living in the poverty line. However, those country makes sure to provide aid to the people in need. In the Philippines, the government is also trying their best to aid the poor people by giving scholarships and other monetary program (e.g. 4Ps program). But seeing people receiving the programs and complains that it is not enough for them to sustain a simple lifestyle that is why we badly need a reform for our citizens. In my opinion, it is rightful that we give lands to our farmers. By doing so, Philippines’ poverty rate will decrease and our GDP per nominal will increase because farmers will earn more income and spending power. However, how are we going to do that when most of the land are owned by private entities and are used by the government already. Can we just strip the owners of the land and give it away to the farmers, is it that land-grabbing too? Maybe, the government can buy the lands of the landowners at market price. I still push for agrarian reform and give the farmers a land to sow on. Because by having a land, it may be considered as a non-current asset, but one can use this asset to sow crops, invest in business, sublet the land for income and receive 100% income without sharing it to the landlord.  What I think is a viable idea aside from having an agrarian reform is to help the farmers is to have a fair-share in the total profit. What I meant by fair-share, farmers should get 50% of the total revenue of the crops and it should be required for the landlord to provide allowances for the farmers. Because according to my estimation, if a farmer sows on a 1 hectare of land planting a palay, they can only get Php 20,000-30,000 and that is if the harvest produced many palays and is good quality. In one year, there are only 2 cropping season (1st and 2nd crop). Given that the crops they sow were successful. They can only earn Php 40,000-60,000 a year. I do not agree that 40,000-60,000 pesos of income is good for one year.
Learning
It is good that many young learners are studying such topics as it opens our mind to the harsh reality of society. I understand the desire of the people to prioritise this issue and I agree with them too. I believe that in every country (except for Singapore) that agriculture will always have a big impact on one country’s success and economic growth. To elaborate it further, the Philippines agricultural sector with the help of our farmers is our country’s backbone. Hypothetically speaking, if they were to left suddenly, Philippines may experience an economy recession. That is why we need to urge politicians to implement stronger laws that protect our farmers. By doing so, we are helping alleviating poverty at the same time, we help our country’s economy. Because as I told earlier, if those farmers have more spending power, our GDP per nominal is increasing and there are more money flowing in our economy.
Again, I am in favor of land reform.
