When I was in school in like 2012 iirc, the Hungarian government made it mandatory for children to either attend a religion class of their choice or a "morals and ethics" class, which already says incredible things about the government if they think these two are in any way interchangeable. Even though there was incredible religious variety offered (a hundred different christian sects, plus two jewish and one buddhist), I do not recall enough of my classmates choosing a religion class that they'd actually start one, so we were all in Morals And Ethics.
Now, ethics is a fascinating class in the Hungarian school system, in that I'm sure a syllabus exists for it but I have never heard of any two teachers who taught it in any way similarly. In some places it's like Bible Study Option Two, You May Not Be Christian But We're Forcing You To Do This, and there are even some suitably culturally christian conservative textbooks that made me wince when I found them online. The only morals happening in there are good little christian-conservative life lessons. This is presumably the government's actual intent.
Anyways the teacher who taught us the subject from grades 5-8 was our homeroom teacher, who decided it was actually an extra homeroom class. Which was sometimes an extra history class, since he was also our history teacher and terminally behind schedule. We never discussed a single thing related to Morals And Ethics in those four years. Everyone had straight 5's (the best grade). It was the best class. 10/10.
In high school however, the subject was given to the teacher who also taught philosophy, and he decided it would be an Intro To Philosophy class before our actual philosophy classes. Ethics And Morals? Sure, sure, but let's take this seriously. So, according to Socrates–
The fun part is that both of these men were in fact christian conservatives. They just either cared too little or too much about the actual subject, and so we managed to escape unpropagandized. Thanks guys.

im going back to school in august do you have any advice on how to dyke it up in a collegiate manner. it’s been four years i dont remember what to do
My best advice:
Read the syllabus on the first day of class (even though it's boring 😔). Main things to look out for are: the best way to contact your professor, the course schedule (are you being taught by a sadist who made something due on day 1?), the class's late work policy, and how many points/what percentage of your grade each assignment is worth
Use this information to prioritize assignments. Assignments from classes that don't allow late work + assignments that are worth a lot of points are the ones with the highest priority
Done Is More Important Than Perfect!!! If you can't do something perfect, just get it done. Half ass it or turn it in incomplete if you need to, but turn it in. Scoring 50% is better for your grade than scoring 0%
Do your best to work ahead on lessons each week. I know it's hard. When all of your assignments are due at 11:59 PM on Sunday your brain will want so so badly to wait until Sunday to do all of them but that's how they get you. You will die
If you can find a way to break your lessons down into smaller pieces throughout the week it'll make things so much easier. Example from one of my current classes: watching one 15 minute video per day is WAY better than watching an hour and a half of videos in one sitting the same day your quiz is due
Trying not to put assignments off until the last minute can be hard, but at the very least you should try to start before tech support closes. Realizing that your shit is broken at 11:00 PM the day of is the worst feeling
Don't be afraid to contact your professor if you need to, most of them are glad to help. Make sure to check whether your question is answered in the syllabus first and include your course & section number in the email/message to make it easier for them to help you
On the other hand, if your professor is rude/intimidating when you reach out about issues just remember that you're both adults and you're paying them for a service. And if something is really wrong you can talk to their boss (the head of their department)
If you need to take notes and you don't know/remember how, look around online and find a note taking system that works for you. The Cornell notes method was helpful for me and it's really simple to do
If you have trouble sitting down to study/work, try the pomodoro method (25 min study + 5 min break) and some ambient music. Body doubling/"study with me" can also be helpful, and you can even find videos with all three of these combined. (My favorite are the video game ones. I am studying with Mr. Skyrim and we're doing pomodoros together)
Above all else, make sure to earn that degree in a dyke-honoring way 🫡 godspeed, soldier

Star I am on a quest
How does the school system work in your house( it is now its own country btw)?
So I dont really understand what you mean by 'its own country'. But im homeschooled, and my school system is a bit different then others, even other homeschoolers. I dont do online schooling, although I do use online resources, e.g, for educational videos or reading resources. But I mostly us a lot of books. I know, very old fashioned. I also use the library regularly for help (not just with books but also CD's and movies, etc)
And then just lots of real life experiences, field trips, summer camps, and things like that. Like sometimes on a random day my dad will just say, 'We're going to the zoo, and you have to do an essay on a certain animal.' Or, 'You have a music class tomorrow, I signed you up for music lessons.'
So my school system and the way I learn is very spontaneous, with not much schedule. But still, I'd say im pretty smart, im studying things that people in my grade wouldn't usually start for another couple years, if at all, e.g, advanced psychology, trigonometry.
Thanks for the question!

Good Times
(reposted from my non-monetized Substack. feel free to join me over there.)
The biggest difference between how I wrote personal essays and how I write journal entries is that I write essays with answers already in mind.
When I journal, I don't even have a question yet, much less an answer. I have feelings. Emotions that I need to process. I don't tend to process emotions quickly, or at all, unless I write them into hard containers: boxes made of words, walls of sentences.
I am mostly driven to write about my distress. When I'm happy, I have better things to do. A lot of my writing is motivated by sheer self-preservation.
This blog is supposed to be a journal. I am supposed to be letting myself off the hook and not trying to write from certainty here. But every time I open this document of blog entries, I find myself trying to come up with things to say that will be useful to my reader. Essay style. As if I had answers.
Force of habit, I guess.
I happen to believe despair is always a lie. But it's also a physical condition that affects the body. Action can take the edge off. So can the love of others.
Lately, I feel very far away from the love of my people. I remind myself this is only geographically true.
I have been very active, to compensate.
Despair keeps rattling the doors of my thoughts.
On Saturday, I went to the in-person training to qualify for my 2-year CPR certification. I got yet another trauma medicine certificate from a different online training provider. I joined a gym and scheduled a session with a trainer. I scheduled a bataireacht lesson. I'm going to my self defense class tonight. I'm working on my novel. I'm doing my actual job.
The people I care for in a professional capacity watch Fox News all day, every day. The TV stays on by default. I don't think they really pay attention to it. But I can't help seeing and hearing it. It feels like I have to spend ten minutes processing my rage for every 30 seconds of exposure. When I go back to my room, Democratic politicians are pummeling my inbox, unable to communicate about the Omnishambles without soliciting donations, unable to acknowledge or account for their own uselessness.
I am not in distress because of politics or the DNC or Fox News or the Omnishambles. The architecture of my nervous system is such that distress will find me from time to time no matter what happens to be going on in the world. I can't help my reaction to the sights and sounds of the Republican extinction burst, in all its nasty disregard for truth and reality. But my feelings come from me. I have to remind myself of this a lot. My emotional condition is not the inevitable result of factors outside my control. There is nothing wrong with me yet. Dread will not protect me. A little anxiety is good for getting yourself up off the couch to do useful things. Past that point, anxiety ceases to promote survival and should be regarded, as Tolkien said, as a weapon of the enemy.
I am already doing things. I tell my anxiety it needs to chill.
My bataireacht coach told me a story back in December (he gave me permission to share). His ancestors appeared to him in a dream. He asked for advice about the future and the coming troubles, and they told him: "You're going to have a good time." My coach started trying to explain: no, you don't understand, things are getting really bad here. Their response: "No, we understand, and we agree, things are very bad. But you are going to have a good time."
I am going to die. Maybe sooner, maybe later. The timing will probably not be up to me. Preserving my happiness until then doesn't require me to be in denial. I lean on the perspective I gained from surviving homelessness. Happiness isn't things. Security isn't things. The feeling of safety is not the condition of safety. Home is people and relationships. We can wade into the troubled water and let ourselves be changed, instead of drowning.
These feelings take a lot of processing. There isn’t any final resolution, only continuing motion.

Graphic Design Career Paths After Completing a Local Course
Tumblr media
Graphic design is more than just creating eye-catching visuals—it’s about communicating ideas, solving problems, and enhancing user experiences through design. With the growing digital landscape, the demand for skilled graphic designers continues to rise across various industries. Many aspiring designers often begin by searching for graphic design courses near me to start their creative journey. These local courses not only offer foundational skills but also open doors to a variety of exciting and lucrative career paths.
1. Graphic Designer
The most direct career path is, of course, becoming a graphic designer. After completing a course, graduates can find work in advertising agencies, media houses, corporate design departments, or even as freelancers. Graphic designers work on everything from logos and brochures to social media graphics and website visuals. The ability to understand client needs, use design software effectively, and communicate visually is key in this role.
2. UI/UX Designer
With the boom in web and mobile applications, UI/UX design has become a high-demand field. While traditional graphic design focuses on aesthetics, UI (User Interface) and UX (User Experience) design go a step further to enhance functionality and user interaction. If your course included basics of interface design, you can specialize further in this area. A strong portfolio showcasing wireframes, prototypes, and app layouts will help you land roles in tech companies or startups.
3. Motion Graphics Designer
Motion graphics combine design with animation. It’s a growing niche where designers create engaging visual content for videos, advertisements, online platforms, and social media. If you enjoy animation or storytelling, this could be your ideal path. Many local courses now offer introductory modules in motion graphics, using tools like After Effects and Premiere Pro.
4. Brand Identity Designer
Every business needs a recognizable brand. Brand identity designers help companies create visual systems that define their look and feel—logos, typography, color schemes, and packaging design. This role requires creativity, strategic thinking, and the ability to understand a brand’s personality. A local course that covers branding principles and design thinking can set you on the right path toward this career.
5. Web Designer
While web development focuses on coding, web designers handle the aesthetic and functional layout of websites. They create site mockups, user-friendly designs, and cohesive visuals that reflect the brand identity. After completing a local course in graphic design, you can specialize in web design by learning HTML, CSS, and tools like Figma or Adobe XD. Businesses of all sizes now recognize the value of a well-designed website, increasing opportunities in this field.
6. Digital Illustrator
If you have a flair for drawing and creativity, digital illustration could be your calling. This role involves creating custom illustrations for books, blogs, advertisements, games, and more. Many local graphic design courses introduce you to illustration techniques using software like Adobe Illustrator or Procreate. As a digital illustrator, you can work as a freelancer, take on client projects, or collaborate with design studios.
7. Print Designer
Despite the digital shift, print design remains a vital part of marketing. From posters and banners to magazines and business cards, print designers create visuals that are both attractive and effective. Local courses often include lessons on print layouts, color theory, and prepress techniques. Understanding print materials and dimensions is essential to succeed in this traditional yet evolving field.
8. Freelance Designer or Design Entrepreneur
Many individuals who complete graphic design courses prefer to work independently. Freelancing allows you to choose your clients, projects, and schedule. Over time, experienced freelancers even build their own design studios or agencies. A strong portfolio, good communication skills, and business knowledge are vital for success. Local courses that include real-world projects or internships can give you the experience you need to get started.
9. Social Media Content Designer
In today’s content-driven world, brands constantly need fresh and engaging visuals for their social platforms. Social media content designers focus on creating posts, reels, banners, and stories that resonate with online audiences. If your course included design for digital platforms, this is a fast-paced and creative role worth exploring.
Final Thoughts
Completing a local graphic design course is just the beginning. The skills you gain—visual storytelling, software proficiency, and creative problem-solving—can lead you to multiple rewarding career paths. Whether you choose to specialize in UI/UX, branding, or motion graphics, the design world offers limitless opportunities.
If you're ready to start your journey and are still searching for graphic design courses near me, look for programs that offer hands-on experience, industry-relevant tools, and career support. With the right foundation and passion for design, you can turn your creativity into a fulfilling profession.

Top 3 Emerging Trends in Education for 2024
In 2024, education is evolving rapidly to meet the demands of a changing world. With the rise of new technologies and methodologies, here are the top 3 trends that are shaping the future of education:
1. AI-Powered Learning Tools
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming a game-changer in education. From AI-driven tutoring systems to personalized learning experiences, AI is helping students learn more efficiently. These tools analyze student performance and adjust lesson plans based on individual strengths and weaknesses. For example, platforms like Duolingo use AI to create customized language lessons based on a student’s progress.
Impact: Students can receive tailored feedback, making the learning process more engaging and effective. AI also helps teachers automate administrative tasks, giving them more time to focus on personalized teaching.
2. Gamified Learning
Gamification is transforming education by making learning fun and interactive. By incorporating game elements such as points, badges, and leaderboards into lessons, educators are improving student engagement and motivation. For instance, platforms like Kahoot! and Quizizz allow teachers to create quizzes and games that promote competition and collaboration among students.
Impact: Gamified learning encourages active participation, improves retention of information, and fosters a competitive yet enjoyable learning environment.
3. Hybrid Learning Models
With the global shift toward remote learning during the pandemic, hybrid learning models—combining in-person and online instruction—are becoming the norm. Schools and universities are adopting flexible schedules that allow students to learn both in the classroom and from home. This model offers more accessibility, as students can choose the learning environment that suits them best.
Impact: Hybrid learning increases accessibility to quality education, especially for students in remote areas or those balancing other commitments. It also promotes digital literacy as students use various online tools and platforms to collaborate and learn.
Final Thoughts: These trends highlight how education is evolving to become more personalized, engaging, and accessible. As we move further into 2024, it’s exciting to see how these innovations will continue to shape the future of learning. What trend do you think will have the biggest impact on education?
By staying up-to-date with these trends, both educators and students can better adapt to the ever-changing educational landscape.

Pardon me as I prepare to intrude my thoughts on language learning upon the public (again).
I’m working on taking myself less seriously and getting over what I like to call *nonsensical, self-inflicted recording stress*. Hence the one-take and post method I’m trying to experiment with on tumblr dot com in which I read and comment on my ***polyglot journal***.
WIP, unbeta’d, off-the-cuff. 🧿💙
Transcript below (Orange = Speaking/commentary, Blue = Written commentary, White = Reading)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the spring of 2020 I decided to write a detailed book on all of the language learning activities that I was doing. As I look here at page 27 of the book itself—it's pretty long; there are still blank pages—I can see several things. The one is a general overview, together with my own commentary about what I did wrong right from the off.
[Reads] In which I accidentally bite off far more than I can chew, determine to do too much, establish a routine check in system and throw organization to the wind. Includes: Irish, Greek, German and Middle English; the Merlin project in its infancy, plus voca; a note on colour-coded translation exercise; a start to translating authors whose work I know; and the initial return to reading historical verse, which means, generally speaking, [whispers] Chaucer. The overwhelming theme is to consider what core vocabulary and skills I will need to accomplish the activities described, with special emphasis on trying the first ... to first rely on my own language skills in a—in an in almost Test -Teach slash Test-Check manner.
Now let's see how it starts.
During the summer season I have decided to focus my language learning efforts on my productive skills, those being speaking, writing, translation and the creation of new materials. At the center of this decision burns the desire to spread the seeds of my knowledge of different languages to others and espouse the personality of fire to keep my learning active, invigorating, and all consuming. This trimester of learning—Yes, I can count, I just really like the word trimester (it's technically a semester) from May through to the end of August, is meant to prevent me from becoming too lethargic in my study habits. I shall focus predominantly on Irish, with approximately three lessons per week scheduled with various teachers—hilarious— in the hopes of levelling up within 3-6 or even 8 months—this timeline is still up to debate depending on various factors such as finances, travel, quarantine status and miscellaneous slash other. My secondary main languages are Greek, German and Middle English—[Laughs] Sorry, reading it now is hilarious to me because I already know what happens, and now I know where I am in my studies and we're ... we're basically back at this point, but in a better way. Okay, let's not jump ahead of ourselves—So, my secondary main languages are Greek, German and Middle English. In these languages I aim to create one to two significant works of translation—wow—and/or auditory material. My main goal is to drastically avoid using the Internet—best of luck with that—and other electronic digital tools to aid me, with the exception of the online Greek-English Dictionary (until I have purchased my own dictionary in Greek)—I should add a footnote here: I have got my grandfather’s print dictionary and Greek and it is from the 1920s and I need a ... updated one. Anyways—and the Middle English corpus as necessary. Moreover, I should hope to complete some written exercises and short writings in Hebrew, Italian and possibly even French.
Correct me if I'm wrong: too much is going on in this section, and as we'll see, it just gets worse.
Stay tuned next time to find out the mistakes I made, but also the benefits I experienced in trying to learn multiple languages at the same time and, especially, improving those levels at multiple times (???) without having the firm foundation necessary to actually complete that type of an activity. Ohh so many things to go over. I'm very excited. See you next time!

Week 1: Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (+ a Ferry)
Ciao!
In the past week, I have used Italian trains, buses, taxis, a shuttle van, planes, and taken a ferry ride, so this blog post will be dedicated to transportation.
To begin, I was supposed to fly from Chicago to Dublin, then Dublin to Naples, where CIS Abroad (the company hosting the program) provided transport shuttles to either the dorms or shared apartment accommodations in Sorrento. The initial long-haul flight wasn’t too bad, I read for the majority of the flight and was fed some half-decent food.
Unfortunately, due to delays on the tarmac in Chicago, I missed my connecting flight in Dublin and had to figure out another way to Naples. I luckily discovered someone else also in my program in my same flight and we navigated Europe together. Since the next flight out to Naples wasn’t until the following evening, we decided to go instead to Rome and then brave the Italian train system to navigate to Naples.
Tumblr media
(Me and a fellow study abroad student taking a shuttle to our new terminal in Dublin)
To preface, figuring out the train system seemed to be one of the biggest learning curves people that I have talked to have encountered in the past, and as such it was something I was nervous about coming to Italy. Trains (and ferries, as it turns out) are frequently late and don’t align with posted schedules, tickets have to not only be bought but also validated at the station, and the platform numbers commonly change right before arrival. We were supposed to be briefed on how to handle it during our orientation the first day, however we were thrown straight in the deep end! We used one of the most common websites for booking high-speed trains, ItaliaRail, and managed to book a train from the Rome airport to the main Roman train station (surprisingly far from the airport), then one from Rome to Naples for a total cost of around 65 euros.

Since the first train was a regional/local train, there were no assigned seats and thus we had to validate our tickets just before boarding through, however for the high speed cross-country train to Naples, since we had an assigned seat, we did not have to validate (something that stressed us out as you can face fines if you don’t properly validate tickets). Thankfully, everyone we talked to was very nice and helped us figure it out.
Once in Naples, we shared a taxi to the airport with two other travelers we met along the way (5 euros each) and waited until a few others from the program landed and got the last transfer shuttle to Sorrento. Finally, after over 36 hours of traveling (almost 16 more than intended) we arrive with a leg up on the local transport compared to our peers.
Just earlier today, I took a bus with two other friends from Sorrento to Positano, another town along the Almalfi coast, for 10 euros. Getting the ticket was very easy, as the ticket booth at the bus station was clearly marked. The bus was about 30 minutes late, but that is to be expected for Italian buses. After around 45 minutes and many many curvy and windy roads, we got off at Positano and explored the town. On the way back, we bought ferry tickets for 19 euros (cheaper with cash than online) and waited in a long line to board. As with the bus, the ferry was quite late, but actually took less time to get back to Sorrento. I think the ferry is my new favorite form of transportation as I loved sitting on the top deck and watching the coastline go by.

Overall, I am quite proud of myself for figuring out how to get around on the fly, but I definitely took away some important lessons. First, be patient, both with yourself and the transportation. Everyone gets lost/confused sometimes and navigating a new country is daunting. Be willing to ask for help if you don’t know what to do! It’s better than facing fines or unknowingly breaking any transit laws. Additionally, some places only take cash, make sure to always carry some cash! Lastly, if you can, TAKE DRAMAMINE, especially for the buses. I am not one to get car/motion sick, but the switch backs and coastal curves are no joke and all three of us were very close to turning green by the time we got off the bus.
This post is getting long, but I wanted to share some details of Italian public transportation as that was one of my biggest questions going into this program.
See you next week!

quil!!!!!! my dad is teaching me and my siblings khmer!!!!!! i cannot pronounce SO MANY of these but oh man. this is so fun languages are so interesting too like. spanish obv uses the roman alphabet along w many others. chinese uses VAST amounts of characters. and these are the couple of languages i am very vaguely learning and then now you go to khmer which comes from sanskrit like so many other languages have throughout asia and i am learning the writing system which is SO!!! COOL!!! even though it's very small lessons haha. right now we're learning the consonants and srah, which is like. the consonants are the base part and then srah are modifying vowels that you add to consonants and roots, and the root uhhh. i haven't learned that part yet but is ALSO a thing that you add. i'm trying to figure out how to pronounce the srah rn there are SO MANY and i am so used to english. but i am so excited ahhh
also attempting to not get ahead of myself getting excited abt being able to more easily learn other languages that come from sanskrit lmaooo i'm barely even learning the alphabet!!! but was taught the word for love is srolang among a few other words and that is very cool. one day i will not space out when someone speaks khmer and i will actually understand people when we randomly go over to relatives' houses!!!! whoo!!!!!
Yooo!!! That is so cool! Seriously thrilled for you. Learning languages is a lot of work but it's also so rewarding, especially when it's got personal meaning to you.
This also made me realize I didn't know what Khmer's writing system was, so I looked and it certainly looks a little daunting if you have no familiarity with it. But Persian also shares a common origin with Sanskrit, and I'd love to learn Persian one day (because I was raised Baha'i) so perhaps one day we'll both have more familiarity with those languages! And be able to branch out!
But it's so cool to learn how other languages work, and I wish you lots of luck with the srah and pronunciations and everything! You are one step closer to understanding when people speak khmer and claiming that part of your heritage :), and they may be small steps but all the steps count
In a similar vein, I'm staring Nahuatl this semester! Which I'm so excited for, I literally rearranged half my schedule to accommodate it. The Aztecs spoke Nahuatl, and while family is cagey about it it's near certain that we have some indigenous Aztec roots, so I'm really excited to reconnect in this more distanced way. It's still spoken by like 1.5 million people today, so it's possible some of the classes in the future will be with native speakers teaching online from Mexico.
Hooray to both of us starting new languages and reconnecting!

I’m secretly jealous of my boyfriend. His parents were very supportive of him. They paid for him to have driving lessons. They all pulled their resources together to pay for his college. They also taught him life skills growing up that mine never bothered to teach me, like how to do taxes, apply for a job, sign, a lease, budget, build a résumé, and schedule appointments. Things like that.
My parents had a very sink or swim mentality. They are all about survival of the fittest. They don’t believe in teaching children this kind of thing, it’s something they have to figure out for themselves. My parents believed that teaching a child things like this would be cheating the system, spoiling the child and fostering a sense of weakness and entitlement.
I have what I call adult baby syndrome. I have a job, I have my own apartment, but I don’t have a car or driver’s license and I’ve been on my own for a couple of years. I also don’t have a college education. While my dad had a trust, fun, set aside for me my mother blew all of it after I died. She thought that since I got diagnosed with autism shortly after his death that I wasn’t even smart enough to make it school in spite of having perfect grades.
She thought the college of been a waste of time and money so she blew it online expensive vacations. When I brought up, wanting to learn how to drive, she wouldn’t hear of it. She said she knew that if I wanted to learn how to drive or go to college I had to pay for it myself, but wouldn’t even allow me to get a part-time job because of the damn autism diagnosis.
This woman has treated me like I was brain dead ever since I got diagnosed. Another thing she wouldn’t allow me to do because of the diagnosis was learn how to cook. She thought that I wasn’t smart enough to be trusted with operating the stove. Thank God my roommate is really into cooking - she taught me everything I know and now I’m actually pretty decent at it.
I probably shouldn’t have moved out at all but as my mom got older, she became physically and mentally abusive and I couldn’t take it anymore. Nobody took what she was doing seriously anyway so it wasn’t like I had a place to go.
My parents would consider my boyfriend spoiled for the support he got but I wish that they had treated me the same way that his parents treated him. I feel like he got a good head start. Meanwhile, my parents believed that doing anything more than providing your kid with food and shelter (which could be withdrawn as a punishment at any time) would be spoiling them.
