hii! there actually is a guidebook to tumblr (etiquette)... somewhere... somehow... it's just a random post made by someone, but i can't find it anymore lol(???) last time i saw it was in september 2024 but it was really useful so i suggest trying to find it
but if you're lazy like me and don't want to put in all that work, here's the brief summary of what i remember it saying:
your feed is called a "dashboard", but we call it a "dash". don't ask why, we just do.
asks can be used for... asking questions... but they can also be used for starting a conversation or telling the blogger something. this is different from PMs (Private Messages) because PMs generally stay private, while asks are very easily posted
reblogging is always allowed, always appreciated, and heavily encouraged. tumblr doesn't really have an algorithm, so likes and comments don't affect how much a post is shown. tags are how people can find a post, but reblogs are the main way posts are spread around. so reblog your heart out!!
again, if you don't tag your posts (like hashtags), no one will see them
tags can be used as hashtags, but they can also be used as a kind of "P.S." field — useful things go in the normal text field, things like jokes or backstory goes in the tags
in my experience, PMs are rarely used. these are more for actual friends; mutuals (otherwise referred to as moots) generally reblog, ask, and/or make an original post and tag whoever they're talking to
do not, as an adult, PM a minor. they will likely automatically assume you're a creep, because what would you have to say to them in PMs that you couldn't just post?
comments are a rabbithole. i don't understand them. they're weird. i'd say comments are used to comment on what's in the post without contributing to the conversation — imagine comments as "LMAO ME TOO" and yes/no questions, where reblogs are more like "OH MY GOD THAT REMINDS ME OF [insert related story]" and "why/what/how" questions that require longer answers
anything you post in a community won't appear on your blog, unless you repost the community post onto your blog. yes, that sentence is hard to read for me too.
tumblr is a lot more mature than, say, tiktok or twitter. we thrive on "if you don't like, block" culture, and we don't often do petty drama. if someone gets cancelled here, they likely did something morally wrong (discrimination, environmental damage, etc), instead of a silly reason twitter would cancel someone for like eating a strawberry. yes, that actually happened.
you can be well-known on tumblr, you can be infamous on tumblr, but you cannot be famous. tumblr isn't a space for influencers, but for community. i mean, you could try to become famous on here, but it likely won't work
and lastly, while you can't become famous, your posts can. read @/hellsite-hall-of-fame
This is low-key amazing TY😭
