Passwords...the bane...
Of one’s existence. I know, I know, passwords are important, but they really are a pain in the arse! Everything should have its own password, one or two you might be able to repeat, but definitely not advisable. For work, if you work for a corporation, you are going to have to change your password every 90 days, sometimes less! For personal, you really should change them every so often, or make…

💻🍎Adding the latest expansion packs and stuff packs for The Sims 2 to The Sims 2 Super Collection on macOS
About six months ago, I posted in a Discord group dedicated to the beta version of The Sims 2 about a discovery I made, but since that server has been move into read only mode, I’d like to share it here—along with some new details.
My discovery is related to The Sims 2: Super Collection — the macOS edition. It includes expansions up to Bon Voyage and several stuff packs: Happy Holiday Stuff, Family Fun Stuff, and Glamour Life Stuff. The remaining DLCs were never released on macOS, because EA and Aspyr had a contract to release only a fixed number of expansions. By the time Bon Voyage was out, all obligations (9 DLCs) were fulfilled, and EA didn’t extend the contract for the remaining packs.
As a result, Super Collection is considered quite limited. Moreover, it lacks support for the Russian language. Still, I must give Aspyr credit for making it 64-bit and continuing to support and update it.
I decided to dig into the game files, take a closer look at how things are structured, and try to bring back the missing expansions and stuff packs.
So, in The Sims™ 2: Super Collection.app/Contents, the most interesting folders are MacOS, which contains the executables (the main one is called Sims2XP_Exe), and Assets, which is structured similarly to the root folder of the Windows version (with TSData and Expansion Packs).
Contents and Assets structure
Expansion Packs structure
Each expansion or stuff pack has its own TSData folder, just like in Ultimate Collection (UC), Legacy Edition, and a Sims.plist file.
Sims.plist is kind of a mini-registry analog for macOS. It’s used to link the DLCs. Here's what it looks like:
Example of Sims.plist in the Bon Voyage folder:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>TSProductIndex</key>
<integer>10</integer>
</dict>
</plist>
The TSProductIndex corresponds to the release order of the DLCs. I discovered that:
University — 1
Nightlife — 2
Open for Business — 3
Family Fun Stuff — 4
Glamour Life Stuff — 5
Pets — 6
Seasons — 7
Bon Voyage — 10 (!)
It seems that Aspyr at some point planned to port Happy Holiday Stuff and H&M Stuff to macOS, as they reserved indexes 8 and 9 and assigned 10 to Bon Voyage! I’ve seen unofficial ports of these and even all the remaining stuff packs up to IKEA (since they’re all based on Open for Business), but they don’t add CAS items like clothing or hairstyles.
The same thing happens if you replace Happy Holiday or H&M with Teen Style, Kitchen & Bath, or IKEA.
But you can only add two packs this way, since only indexes 8 and 9 are reserved. If you add Teen Style, Kitchen & Bath, and IKEA and assign all of them index 9 in their .plist, the game picks Teen Style and ignores the others. Additionally, only wall and floor textures will load—no objects or CAS items.
Okay, so what if I try to add the final expansions and Mansion & Garden Stuff, which updated the game engine, by using a TSProductIndex higher than 10? That’s when a new issue appears: the game performs an integer check. If I set it to 11 or higher, the game won’t launch and shows this error: TSProductIndex=>10
And what if I assign index 10 to Apartment Life and try to run the game? Then I get this error:
Trying to add FreeTime or Apartment Life files

What about Mansion & Garden Stuff? That one worked! (Even with Store Edition files!!)
"Pets" on macOS

But there were major UI glitches. The game thought all DLCs were installed and showed this:
Screenshots of broken UI:

I couldn’t load families or create a Sim. UI elements from expansions beyond Bon Voyage didn’t work. They were clickable but showed nothing. It’s like the game didn’t know what to do with them.

I believe this is because the executable is from Bon Voyage and needs to be updated to support FreeTime and Apartment Life code.
So, at this stage of my discovery, it’s possible to restore at least two stuff packs.
What about other languages? Aspyr claims only English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Japanese are supported. But in the game files — specifically in TSData/Res/Locale — there are more language folders, just like in the multilingual Windows version. Surely, there’s a trick to enable them...
And yes — there is! I found a guide on SimsWiki about changing the language for different Sims versions (Changing the game language). For macOS, it suggests using the following Terminal command:
Polish language example from SimsWiki:
arch -x86_64 open "$HOME/The Sims™ 2: Super Collection" --args -l:Polish
That didn’t work for me, so I modified the command like this:
My version for Russian language:
arch -x86_64 open "/Applications/The Sims 2.app" --args -l:Russian
And the game switched to Russian! The only problem was that Cyrillic characters weren’t displayed—just blank text. So I replaced the fonts in Super Collection with those from the base UC game, located in <Base Game>/TSData/Res/UI/Fonts, and... the game now runs fully in Russian!
The Sims 2 Super Collection turned into Bon Voyage in Russia
Ignore the untranslated Pleasantview — I entered that neighborhood before switching the language. It’s also necessary to replace the Center, Downtown, and university template files, or else they’ll stay in English. This issue also exists in UC and Legacy Edition and is resolved in a similar way.
Interestingly, when creating Downtown or the shopping district, the game shows the Double Deluxe logo instead of the localized Business or Nightlife icons:
Traces of The Sims 2 Double Deluxe
So, at this point, it’s already possible to play The Sims 2 on macOS entirely in Russian (with some workarounds like launching it through Terminal) and with two stuff packs, up to Mansion & Garden Stuff.
Now, if only we could figure out how to reserve additional values in TSProductIndex — then we could potentially get all stuff packs based on Open for Business at the very least, and at best, a fully working "Ultimate Collection" on macOS.

like snw and enterprise are both very illustrative of the limits of trying to do star trek in the 21st century tho for different reasons with enterprise like you can physically feel the wheels coming off the berman trek machine in real time as it hits the limits of this formats applicability to the modern tv landscape crashing into the wall that is post 9/11 politics in real time and this makes for a kind of fascinating to dissect cultural artifact where star trek characters say things like i dont negotiate with terrorists when just a few years earlier kira was a main character and with snw its like trying to do some kind of necromancy to bring back berman trek for one last go around as if enterprise didnt show in such explicit detail why that is not a format that still works for tv like 20 years ago like you can physically see with both of them positioned as prequels and i mean in many ways the fan popularity of season 4 of enterprise really did lay the groundwork for of course those obsessive fans of that era were gonna get older and have tv type jobs and want to engage in that kind of slavish fan service forever and ever and make snw like it did set that out where both parts in some ways treat the future coming of star trek canon in their timelines as this almost quasi religious event as they just lay down the groundwork so future episodes can happen and everyone pats themselves on the back about it like at this point being star trek is less about an ethos or ideas or age old television style that has impacted almost every sci fi show ever made and instead becomes sort of this shambling corpse of canon so people can update memory alpha or whatever but also in many ways snw has barely distanced itself from the militarism of enterprise yet its now like treated as normal and average like very much in the way the macos just stuck around into enterprise season 4 despite the conflict being over that they could not imagine a post 9/11 star trek ever being anything but violent black ops showing up to take people down or whatever even in the more hopeful we are creating the federation season or whatever and snw has accepted that as reality and thats just what star trek is and tries to pretend its never been anything else which comes off as so jarring when its clearly trying to recreate the style of tng where everyone stood around and debated if they should throw themselves into the sun if they were gonna step on a grasshopper or something

How to reduce your phone/social media usage
I achieved it (добився успєшного успєха) and I will share my tips with you!
(this post is actually for @will-ruadh I just realized writing it all in notes would be wildly uncomfortable and unreadable)
1) Make a realistic goal
This step has substeps because to make a realistic goal you need to a) look in the mirror and assess where you are now. To do so, you should track your usage. There are programs to do that but your phone might have an in-built feature like mine. When I started I spent around 9 hours every day on my phone (and on some days I spent more). It would be also useful to note which apps you spend the most time on
Then, we move on to b) setting the goal. You might be the kind of person to be able to quit your addictions cold turkey but then stop reading this post, and go watch this video instead. It's quite motivational. If you are not that kind of person, expect small progress. I think my first goal was not going above my average (so, like, 9 hours a day was a limit I set for myself). When I achieved that, I reduced it by an hour (you can reduce it by half an hour or ten minutes, whatever). Now my limit is 5 hours and I rarely break it and when I do I quickly return back to it
2) Praise yourself for progress!
Different people are motivated by different things so this step might be kind of vague and will need some individual work. But I feel like the most important thing is praising yourself for any progress you make. We often learn to be down on ourselves and most of us are not motivated by that so why do it??? Be happy with your little steps. You can reward yourself in different ways if that helps. You might ask for external validation from your friends, whatever works for you. But don't forget that you are doing great! And do not look too far ahead - thinking that "ugh my goal is so small, I spent 9 hours on my phone when I should have spent 5" IS NOT GOOD. Look straight ahead towards your first little goal and when you get there, set another little goal and praise yourself when you achieve it!
Some say it is better to praise consistency rather than "streaks". If you exceed your limits 3 times a month, it's a better result than being consistent the whole month and then relapsing for 2 months. But you can reward yourself for streaks too if you find it fun
3) Don't be too hard on yourself
People might get overwhelmed by regret or other negative emotions. "Ugh, why do I spend so much time doom-scrolling, I am wasting my time" - NOT HELPFUL thinking. Believe it or not, there are objective reasons why you developed this habit. Believe it or not, it must be helpful for your brain somehow. For example, I spend much more time online when I am in stressful situations. Social media feel safe and it distracts me from harsh reality. You have to understand yourself and forgive yourself. Accept yourself to change yourself
And if you fail and fall back into your habit, don't be too mad at yourself (you can be mad at yourself a little though). It's natural that your brain wants to do what it always did instead of restricting itself. You won't always be 100% consistent and it's alright! Get back up and try again
4) Use technical support
This is the part where I advertise dumb apps to you. But first, explore your phone's built-in features! Here's what I did just without installing any additional software:
(now that I wrote until this point I realise I didn't write this in mind that laptop or computer usage might be the problem ugh I am stupid)
Set hours in the morning and the evening when social media apps are not available - this is very helpful if you scroll in bed
Set a limit for general phone usage, specific apps or categories
But then I realised I wanted more features so I went hunting for apps:
StayFree - it is available for Android, iOS, Windows, MacOS, Linux and as a browser extension for Chrome, Safari and Mozilla. It has a lot of options, probably the most out of all the apps I saw. It's helpful if you need specific limits that your basic phone functionality can't provide. It can also block things like the Reels tab in your Instagram and YouTube shorts. It is pretty heavy, though, I need to wait a bit before it opens on my phone
ScreenZen - this app has some functions the former doesn't. I use it to make myself do a little breathing exercise before entering my social media app. It is annoying as heck but sometimes I think to myself "I don't need this right now" and close the app before opening it. I also make it limit my usage by 15 minutes timeframe so every 15 minutes I have to do the exercise again and rethink my choices
With using any apps like this there might be privacy concerns since they need a lot of access to your phone to be able to do what they do. Do your own research etc etc. Both apps are free
You can find other ways to help yourself spend less time. They may differ from one person to another
5) OPTIONAL. Read How We Change (And Ten Reasons Why We Don't) by Ross Ellenhorn
Not like it's going to particularly help but I found this book very healing and insightful when it comes to changing your behaviours and your habits. It is not a practical guide but it is written with love and might help you understand yourself better. It certainly influenced the way I look at some things. My viewpoint is heavily inspired by it, honestly, I feel like I have to give credit where it's due
The End
I can go into more detail on various ways how I do things, so if you have questions you may ask. But honestly, people are so different, what works for me might not be perfect for you. You have to be curious and creative, looking at yourself with an unclouded mind, seeing your internet addiction as a task you are solving rather than a personal failure. The more heavy feelings you attach to it, the harder it is to be unbothered (moisturized, in your lane). Look at your triggers, look at how you respond to different strategies, look at what works and what doesn't. Be curious about the way your mind works. Idk man I love you I want everyone to be happy and pleased with themselves. I am so unbelievably happy I do not scroll all day long. It was so bad and now it is better and it took me two years, I think, maybe more. I believe in you
