SOMETHING SPECIAL
(Note: mildly NSFW)
"Do you, uh ... have any plans for Saturday?" Dewey asked. After the wedding reception, Beej had transported the two of them back to Dewey's apartment, and now Dewey was driving Rosalie home. "I was thinking we could do something special. I mean, I know Valentine's Day was today, but ... well, what with Adam and Barbara's wedding, I thought we should maybe do something on the weekend."
Rosalie smiled. "I'd like that," she told him. "What did you have in mind?"
"Uhh ... I don't ... I don't wanna spoil it -- i-it's a surprise. Something ... something special. You'll like it, I promise."
"I like surprises," she told him, and kissed him on the cheek. "It's a date, Mr Finn."
When they reached the Wimbledon, Rosalie's Upper East Side apartment complex, he got out of the van and went over to the passenger's side to open the door for her. She got out of the vehicle and stroked his arm.
"Would you like to come up for a nightcap?" she asked.
He looked at his watch. "I ... I'd really love to, but ... well, it's getting kinda late, and you have to be at the academy tomorrow morning ... so I probably shouldn't."
Rosalie saw the disappointment in his eyes -- it wasn't just an excuse.
"Yeah, you're right," she sighed. "Besides, we'll have that much more to look forward to on Saturday." She pressed her lips to his -- she'd intended it to be a light kiss, but she couldn't quite control the ... hunger she felt for him.
Dewey, too, had expected a chaste kiss goodnight, but when Rosalie's tongue slipped into his mouth he responded in kind as they embraced on the sidewalk in front of the apartment building. "Mmmm," he murmured, revelling in the taste of her.
Rosalie felt him rise to the occasion. She pressed closer, feeling the heat of his libido through the fabric of her lingerie. Oh, God, I need this man, she thought, digging her fingers into his rear.
Suddenly, she released him. "We ... we'd better quit now, before ..."
"Uh, yeah," Dewey said, his voice gravelled with need. "Yeah, you're ... you're right. Uh, g'night, Roz -- see you tomorrow."
"Good night, Dewey," she replied. "And thank you for inviting me -- it was a lovely wedding."
"Uh, yeah ... it was, wasn't it?" He raised an arm, intending to rest his hand on the passenger's side door, but he miscalculated the distance and nearly stumbled off the curb.
Rosalie laughed lightly. "Be careful, Mr Finn -- we wouldn't want you to get injured before Saturday."
"No," he agreed. "No, we ... w-we certainly wouldn't want that!" He got back in the van and watched her enter the building, and then he drove off, heading back to his Brooklyn apartment as fast as he could -- he desperately needed to get home to tame the beast in his pants before having a nice, long, very cold shower.
*****
The next morning, coffee cup in hand, Dewey paced the floor of his apartment, trying to think of something -- anything -- for his impending date with Rosalie. He wanted it to be special, but he was drawing a blank.
"Come on, man!" he said to himself as he walked back and forth between the bed and the table. "You can do this -- I mean, how hard can it be, right? Take her someplace nice -- someplace that you can get a last-minute reservation. It can't be that hard!"
He chuckled ruefully. "Yeah, right," he said. "This is New York -- good luck getting a reservation for six months from now, let alone two days." He smacked himself in the forehead. "God, I'm such an idiot! I mean, it's not like I didn't know Valentine's Day was coming! It's not like Easter, for crissakes. Or Thanksgiving.
"Come on, asshole -- think! " He sat on the edge of the bed and put his head in his hands.
Nothing.
"I ... I'll just have to leave town," he said. "I'll head out west, change my name ... I'll start a new life. Raising, uhh ... raising alpacas, that's it. Yeah -- I'll raise alpacas in New Mexico or something." He chuckled at the thought -- he was a city boy, born and bred. What the fuck did he know about raising alpacas or anything else?
Suddenly he stood up. "I need some fresh air," he said. He pulled on his jeans, threw on a relatively clean t-shirt and his jacket and headed out.
*****
In her office, Rosalie tried to concentrate on paperwork, but she was too distracted -- Dewey had said that he had something special planned for tomorrow, and she couldn't stop wondering what it might be.
"You've certainly got it bad for him!" she told herself with a rueful chuckle. "Of course, you always did have a thing for bad boys." She sighed. "Isn't that the truth." She shuffled the papers on her desk and stacked them in two neat piles, and then she realised that she hadn't sorted them. With another sigh, she picked up one of the piles and began going through it, separating the stuff she'd taken care of from that which she hadn't gotten to yet.
But Rosalie couldn't stop thinking about his surprise. About him. She undid her hair tie and shook the auburn locks free, and then pulled the hair back into a bun at the nape of her neck. She stretched, tilting her head from side to side to work out the kinks, and then she got to her feet. Leaving her office, she headed to the washroom, where she splashed her face with cold water.
It didn't help with the warmth she felt between her thighs.
Standing at the sink, she thought back to the first time they'd made love, a couple of weeks before Christmas. He'd been surprisingly hesitant, as if he'd thought she was a delicate crystal vase that would shatter at his touch -- she'd had to get ... rather rough with him before he stopped handling her with kid gloves. He'd managed a total of three thrusts before he climaxed, to his mortification. But she'd convinced him to try again, and the second time was much better. And the third time was better still ...
That was when she realised that she'd slipped a hand into the waistband of her skirt and was slowly stroking herself through her panties. She hurriedly withdrew the offending hand and readjusting her clothes.
Again she splashed herself with cold water, and returned to her office.
*****
While he was out, Dewey got an idea for figuring out his dilemma. After stopping to get a couple of hot dogs with the works (well, okay ... three) at a food cart, he headed back to his apartment.
"Okay," Dewey muttered, getting a sheet of paper out. "Let's do some brainstorming." He wrote Rosalie's name in the centre of the page and circled it. "Who is Rosalie Mullins?" he asked himself, and began writing down all the things he associated with her ...
Tumblr media
"Okay," he said to himself as he looked at the results. "Okay, yeah ... I think I can work with this." Then he frowned. The page was a mess of intersecting lines and connections, and he couldn't see anything that even remotely resembled an idea.
"Ah, fuck -- who am I kidding? I'm never gonna think of someth--" He started to crumple the page, but then something caught his eye. He smoothed the paper and looked closer -- he'd seen ... something, some pattern in the chaos.
What pattern? he asked himself. What did you see, dude? He'd seen something there -- some association with one of the words.
He peered at the mess on the page ...
Nothing. Whatever it was, he couldn't see it now.
He decided to try another technique. On a fresh sheet of paper he wrote Rosalie's name in a circle and tried to find as many words as he could.
Tumblr media
He studied the list -- other than rose, nothing really said "Valentine's Day".
"I mean, laser makes me think of laser tag, I guess," he said to himself. "That'd be fun ... but not really a Valentine's Day thing. It's gotta be something special. Like, really special."
He tried it again, with "Mullins" this time -- but he could only get five words from that.
"Sun, sum, sill, slum, slim. Fuck." He sighed and chuckled. "Yeah, I'll take her to a slum, and we can sit on a sill and do sums while we watch the sun come up!"
He hung his head in defeat. "I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and come clean -- tell her that I couldn't come up with anything." He sighed again, and looked at the clock. "Time to go," he said. "Got a bunch of kids to teach."
He grabbed his jacket and satchel and headed to the school.
*****
"Mr Finn."
"Ms Mullins!" Dewey said. He ran a hand through his perpetually mussed hair, clearly flustered. "Uh ... hey, there! Um, I ... what's going on?"
"Nothing, Mr Finn," Rosalie replied, smiling at his discomfiture. "Is there something on your mind?"
"Uh, nope ... nothing going on up here at all," he said, pointing to his head. He cleared his throat. "Uh, well ... you know what I mean."
Rosalie chuckled. "Relax, Mr Finn," she said. "You're not in trouble. In fact, I'm looking forward to seeing what you've got planned for Saturday."
"You and me both," he muttered. "I-I ... I mean, I'm looking forward to it, too. What I've got planned, I mean."
"You'd better get to class -- it's almost four o'clock."
"Uh, yeah -- right. Thanks. I-I'll see you later. O-or tomorrow. Whenever. Yeah, I ... I'll, uh ... catch you on the flip side."
Rosalie suppressed a giggle as she watched him walk away.
*****
After class, Dewey got in his van and just sat there, both hands on the steering wheel, staring off into the middle distance. He had less than two days to come up with something that would impress Rosalie, and he was still drawing a blank.
Neither the brainstorming nor the circle word-puzzle thing had given him any usable ideas, even though he'd used both with good results in the past.
Someone tapped on the driver's side window, startling him. He turned and saw Summer Hathaway standing there.
"Hey, Sunshine," he said, rolling down the window. "What's up?"
"Are you okay?" she asked, concerned. "You're just sitting here."
"Uh, yeah, I'm okay," he told her. "I'm just, uh ... I'm just thinking about how I'm gonna spend my weekend. Tryna decide, you know."
"Uh-huh," she said, clearly unconvinced. "Are you planning on asking Ms Mullins out for Saturday?"
"What? Pfft! No, of ... of course not!" he demurred. "She's my boss -- I've told you guys that. I-it ... it wouldn't be right for us to be, uh ... dating."
"Uh-huh," Summer said again -- she looked even more unconvinced than before. "Well, whatever you decide, I'm sure she'll like it -- I mean, you two have been dating for a while, now."
Jeez, she's one smart kid, Dewey thought. Nothing gets past her.
"Just don't pick anything lame, like bowling or something."
"Uh, yeah," he said. "Thanks. I ... I'll keep that in mind. If we ever do start dating. Which we won't."
"Right. Good night, Mr Finn."
*****
By Friday evening, Dewey was getting desperate -- he started calling every halfway decent restaurant he could think of, trying to find someplace that had a table available for Saturday.
No luck.
"Shit -- what am I gonna do? Roz is expecting something special." He let out a heavy sigh and sat down on the edge of his bed. He reached for his guitar and began tuning the strings. He needed to stop thinking about it so that maybe an idea would come to him, and music always helped.
Gradually he began playing a recognisable melody -- "Classical Gas" by Mason Williams. It was a demanding tune, perfect for clearing his mind. The fingers of his right hand flew across the strings as those of his left danced along the frets, and his head began bobbing to the rhythm. He played with everything he had, as if his life depended on it.
By the end, his hair was plastered to his forehead and his breathing was laboured. He took a deep, ragged breath and set the guitar down before falling back on the bed.
He closed his eyes and tried to open himself up to ideas.
*****
Dewey awoke with a start. Saturday morning, and he was still at a loss.
"Fuck," he said softly, and got to his feet. He went to the kitchenette and turned on the stove under the kettle, and then he got his mug from the cupboard. A spoonful of instant coffee and two of sugar.
When the water came to the boil, he filled the mug, stirred the coffee, and added a splash of cream. He took a sip, winced, and blew across the surface of the liquid to cool it down a bit.
He set the mug on the counter with a heavy sigh. Once again, he'd made a promise that he couldn't deliver.
"The story of my life," he muttered.
He poured himself a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch and added milk, and then he sat at the counter to eat while he scrolled through his phone -- he was still hoping that inspiration would strike.
He Googled "last minute date ideas".
Nothing interesting -- just the usual boring shit. Cosy restaurant, karaoke bar, art museum, wine tasting, yada yada yada. But then he saw something just as he put a spoonful of cereal in his mouth, and he laughed so hard that he choked, milk spurting from his nose.
He jumped up, coughing, and ran to the sink. When he'd regained control, he looked at the recommendation -- the Brooklyn Bowl.
A bowling alley.
He should do it just to show up Little Miss Sunshine. He started laughing again at the thought of the fifth-grader's righteous disapproval.
"She's probably right, though," he said to himself. "Roz doesn't strike me as someone who'd like the idea of renting shoes."
He finished his breakfast, grabbed his jacket and headed out for a stroll around the neighbourhood.
*****
"I'm really sorry," Dewey said when Rosalie arrived. "I ... I wanted to do something special for Valentine's Day, but ..."
"But you couldn't think of anything." Rosalie smiled. "You've been a naughty boy, Dewey -- it's not good to lie to teacher."
"No it's not," he agreed, downcast. "I-I shouldn't've said that I'd already planned something. I'm an idiot, a ... a lousy excuse for a boyfriend ... I-I wouldn't blame you if you ... if you never want to see me again."
"Now you listen to me, Mr Finn," she said, taking hold of his shirt collar. "I'm not going anywhere. I don't care what we do, so long as we're together."
"But --"
"No buts." She placed a finger on his lips. "You don't need to impress me with grand gestures, Dewey. I'm looking for something real -- and you're real. We're real -- what we have is real. Got it?"
He nodded silently in reply -- her finger was still on his lips.
"Good. Now -- kiss me." And she pulled him close and pressed her lips to his.
Dewey embraced her and his tongue found its way into her open mouth, and she pressed close against him, against the rapidly growing bulge in his trousers.
"Why, Ms Mullins," he grinned when they came up for air. "I do believe that you're trying to have your way with me!"
"I most certainly am, Mr Finn," Rosalie told him. "And there's nothing you can do about it. Surrender is your only option."
He nodded, a goofy grin on his face. This was going to be a very special Valentine's after all.
"So, uh ... what do you think about bowling?"

"Uh-oh, is my romantic side showing," she playfully teased back, dimples on display, "pardon, I'll have to tuck that back in real quick." With Amos hands on her waist, her own smoothed up his chest and connected at the nape of his neck. It'd been a long time since she'd even been in a situation where that romantic part of her, which had been deeply buried, had a reason to show. Dating and opening herself up to someone again wasn't the easiest thing in the world, it was scary and nerve wracking, because at any moment Amos could check out. It was a chance and a risk, one that seemed worth it, but that didn't keep the fear in check. "And what do you mean we have to discuss it," Şeyda laughed softly a moment later, "I'm just trying to dance with you. You took me to this..." Briefly her hands gestured out to the room then returned to his shoulders.
The man who had his hands on her was handsome, therefore it was difficult for Şeyda to sometimes peel her eyes away from Amos, but she couldn't help to let them wander around this incredible experience he'd put together just for her and their date. It was a challenge to decide what to marvell most. Physically it might not have actually been possible but Şeyda would argue that her heart did a pitter patter, skipped a beat, as it dawned on her just how happy she felt being with him and how much every little thing mattered to her. It wasn't just attachment due to infatuation, feelings were really developing and that heart of hers was hungry and feeling greedier the closer she and Amos got. "Am I making you weak in the knees, are you swooning?" It was another tease but her gaze and smiling was adoring as she looked up at him. "You did all this for me... of course I want to revel in it with you." What was more memorable than dancing in a Van Gough painting with someone you had growing feelings for? She swayed to the music he'd picked and smiled up at him as Amos held her closer, his words made her feel the night was just getting better and better. "I definitely want a third date," Şeyda said without hesitation. "It's going to be tough with you being away for a while. Especially since it's such a big deal for you... I mean, it's Wimbledon." Then she thought about the social scene surrounding events like that. Parties, the nightlife, and lots of good-looking adoring fans. A little spur of jealousy pouted her bottom lip some. "You better not have too much fun... if you know what I mean."
Tumblr media
Amos leaned in closer to her as she turned around to face him, am easy smile on his lips. He couldn't lie, he was proud of himself for coming up with this idea for their second date. Both of them were used to luxury and being comfortable in that environment, he wanted them to get out of their comfort zone even more than they had recently, to put himself out there for her. It was easier said than done, but he was trying. The look on her face was everything that he could have asked for, the fact that seeing her so happy, made him so giddy meant that Amos was probably way in over his head and hadn't even realized it yet. "We can definitely dance, let me just find a song for us. But we'll have to discuss this thing you have for big romantic gestures soon." He teased Şeyda with a goofy smile, resting his hands on her waist when she leaned in to kiss him.
Her excitement was incredibly contagious, to the point where Amos felt himself almost blush at her words. He liked to know that something as small as planning a fun date for her was enough to get such a reaction out of her, considering how long it had been since he'd taken a date seriously. It should worry him, how much he cared about her opinion of him. "I take you to a place where you can admire all this art and you choose to spend it dancing with me. I think you lied to me, I feel like you know exactly how to pursue someone." Instead, Amos took his phone out of his pocket and scrolled until he found a song that they could dance to, choosing Cigarettes After Sex's rendition of Apocalypse, starting the song right as she asked him to dance with her again. Amos whispered as he pulled her closer to begin swinging to the slow song, his hands resting on her lower back as he locked his eyes on hers. "Does this mean you'd be up for a third date? I'll be gone for a couple of weeks for Wimbledon in July. I feel like I need to secure a third date before I leave."

Potential prompt starter - Amy's been having nightmares and needs to seek comfort from a fellow team member
The Van was hardly the comfiest place to spend the night but, Face grimly reasoned with himself, it beat trying to sleep on the ground. That optimistic edge hardly changed the fact that his unofficially assigned seat was fine for sitting in but did not make a luxurious bed. His situation was not improved by the fact that Murdock had the skeleton of a Gumby doll, and managed to contort himself in such a way that he half-flopped out of his seat and kept swatting Face every time he flailed his arms. From the way he was gyrating, the man must have been dreaming he was at Wimbledon. Grumbling under his breath, Face pulled away from a stray elbow and winced when that brought his knee right into line with the back of Hannibal’s seat…again. The Colonel had reclined it while Face was on watch, likely with the intention of pulling it upright once his Lieutenant returned. Only when Face relieved BA, the Colonel was so deeply asleep that Face decided to do the best he could with what he had, rather than wake the man. An hour later, Face sorely regretted his rare display of selflessness. His right knee was probably going to be purple by the morning. If sleep would not come, Face decided he was content to wallow in his own misery. It made a decent enough companion after all these years…. On the cusp of sinking into the comforting depths of a pity-party for one, a strange sound came from the back of the van and caught his attention. Amy was back there…since she was the only woman with them, they all agreed at the onset that she got the rear of the van when they had to camp. He tilted his head, listening more intently. Several minutes of silence passed, leaving him wondering if he had simply imagined the noise, or had actually heard a nocturnal animal or bird nosing around their camping spot. Then it came again—a sort of gasping sound like someone having trouble breathing or trying to muffle a sob. A frown touched his features, darkening them a bit. That did not sound….good. The noise came a third time, and he made up his mind—he would not be sleeping anyways so he might as well check on her. Slipping out of his seat without jostling Hannibal’s or running into Murdock’s unconscious gesticulations, Face crept his way between the built-in shelves that housed most of their worldly possessions. “Amy?” He kept his voice low. “Are you okay back here?”

BILL STERN’S SPORTS NEWSREEL
May 24, 1946
Tumblr media
“Bill Stern's Sports Newsreel” was heard on NBC radio from 1937 to 1953, and CBS radio from 1953 to 1956. Until 1951, the fifteen-minute show was known as the Colgate Sports Newsreel. There were many guest stars and each show shared a story.  The broadcast was heard under several different titles over the years including “The Bill Stern Sports Review”, “The Colgate Sports Newsreel”, and “Bill Stern Sports”.
Bill Stern (1907-71) was hailed as one of the greatest sportscaster that ever lived, Bill Stern knew how to captivate his audience. With a strong background in theater and vaudeville, Stern used techniques rarely heard on a radio sportscast. Stern eulogized the obscure, the near-great, and the great. Stern would tell fantastic tales about the oddest characters that have ever played professional sports. Stern would punctuate his extraordinary legends with long, overstated pauses, soap-opera-like vocal emotion, relentless repetition, and major exaggerated words in every sentence. As a performer, he was also seen and heard in films, including We’ve Never Been Licked (1943) with sports fan William Frawley.
Tumblr media
[Sung to the tune of “Mademoiselle from Armentières" (aka 'Hinky Dinky Parlez-vous'):
Bill Stern the Colgate Shave Cream man is on the air! Bill Stern the Colgate Shave Cream man with stories rare! Take his advice and you'll look nice, Your face will feel as cool as ice, With Colgate shaves you'll be a fan!
EPISODE
“Bill Stern brings you the 342nd edition of the Colgate Shave Cream Sports Newsreel, featuring strange and fantastic stories, some legends others mere hearsay but all so interesting. Special guest tonight is one of the most famous movie stars in Hollywood Miss Lucille Ball.”
Reel One:
Tumblr media
Chicago Cubs third baseman Stan Hack uses Colgate Brushless Shave Cream.  A recorded testimonial is played. Stern offers a double-your-money-back guarantee.
Real Two: Profile of Great Athletes Who Are Not Famous as Athletes
Tumblr media
His first story is about a pitcher who broke his arm and had to adapt by using his other arm and found he could draw. Believe it or not - it was Bob Ripley!
Tumblr media
Second, a cricket player who was so badly injured playing that was reduced to bedrest for twelve years.  Strange as it is, he started to write and today is known as H.G. Wells.
Tumblr media
Third, the story of Charles Dodgson, who raced sailing boats. During a storm, he told stories to children aboard the boat to calm them. He later put them down on paper. Those stories became “Alice in Wonderland” and the sailor was known as Lewis Carroll.
Tumblr media
He tells the story of a writer who became an athlete - a race car driver. The driver hit an oil patch and crashed into a concrete wall doing 90 miles an hour. A newsreel producer saw the grisly footage of the accident and offered the driver a screen test that led to a Hollywood film contract. That driver’s name was Lucille Ball. [*1*] Stern introduces MGM’s Lucille Ball.
Lucy says that after the accident she was told she would never walk again. She says that she enjoys swimming, tennis, horseback riding, badminton, and riding in an aqua-plane!  She flips the script on Stern, and asks him to verify the stories he told about Bob Ripley and Lewis Carroll, which he does.  He then asks her the name of her latest picture.
Tumblr media
LUCILLE BALL: “It’s called ‘Easy To Wed’ and I think I enjoyed making it more than any picture I ever made.”
She says she enjoyed it because it’s a comedy in Technicolor, and because of her co-star Van Johnson (”Hubba-hubba-hubba!”).
Stern tells viewers that Lucille has been decorated four times for her service during the war and reads the inscription on one of her medals: “To Lucille Ball, who gave her time with unselfish devotion in the entertainment of our troops.”  Lucille reminds listeners that our veterans are still in need of our help.  Lucille says thank you and goodnight.
Real Three:
Tumblr media
Charles F. McCarthy does a commercial for Colgate Brushless - Shave Cream of Champions.
Reel Four:  Profile of the 24th of May
May 24th in history, during World War One, Jack Judge, Felix Powell and Ivor Novello sat at Wimbledon watching the tennis when it was discovered that they were all song writers. They wager one thousand pounds if they can write a war song and get it published. They vow to meet a year later.
Tumblr media
Jack Judge wrote “It’s A Long Way To Tipperary” - although Judge could not march himself - he was crippled.
Tumblr media
Felix Powell wrote “Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit-Bag and Smile, Smile, Smile” - although Powell himself could not smile. In fact, he was so depressed he took his own life.
Tumblr media
Ivor Novello wrote “Keep the Home-Fires Burning (Till The Boys Come Home)” - although ironically, Novello’s own home burned to the ground during World War Two.  Novello came to the US in 1917 to entertain the troops, singing the songs. At one camp, he met an America soldier who wrote a song he considered a failure. Novello listened to it and declared it the greatest war song he’d ever heard.  That song was “God Bless America” and the soldier was Irving Berlin.
Stern says that next Friday night he’ll be broadcasting from Chicago with special guest Jimmy Dorsey.
Bill Stern the Colgate Shave Cream man is on his way! Bill Stern the Colgate Shave Cream man has lots to say! He told you tales of sports heroes! The inside dope he really knows, So listen in next Friday night!  C-O-L-G-A-T-E!
Lucille Ball appeared courtesy of MGM. The show was broadcast from New York City.
FOOTNOTE from the Future
[*1*] This story is almost completely untrue. Yes - Lucille Ball was told she may never walk again - after being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in her twenties. She was never a writer or a race car driver, although she posed as one for photographs. It is ironic that she asks Stern to verify the other stories, but allows this outrageous tale to be told on national radio.  She had launched her career saying she was from Butte, Montana, and that her father was a mining executive. She also was said to have been a skilled aviatrix who shot crocodiles flying over the jungles of Columbia. Ball never doubles down on Stern’s dramatic story, but doesn’t disabuse it either.

I think they didn't release the godparent list because no family members and no a-listers were chosen and no persons of colour were chosen. That kills Harry's "I'm everybody favorite relative!" nonsense that he seems to leak, and Meghan's "I'm best friends with A-listers!" marketing. The godparents seem to be Meghan's two Wimbledon pals, Tiggy, Charlie van Straubenzee, Marcus, and an unknown man- probably Mark Dyer. No family, no a-listers, all pale and stale.
That is also my theory on why they haven’t released the names.  Also yes to all pale and stale. If MM’s friends aren’t any indication, her fans should take a clue and reliase that all the friends that have ever stuck around for a signifcant amount of time (apart from Benita) are pale, stale, come from privilege. Every single one.  Do we have a source on the charlie strawberry godparent opinion?

2019-2020 (slot)
I support Eva!
We'll keep in touch!

Queen Index Part 1: The Video Directors
I finally got round to starting this pretty big operation. I start off pretty simply with all the video directors of Queen music videos or concert videos. Just to keep this manageable to me I’ll only cover 1973-1995 (with some exceptions along the way). I’ll do this chronologically and then make a masterpost of all the different posts I’ve made.
Mike Mansfield - Director of the first promo videos of Keep Yourself Alive & Liar shot at Brewer Street in London on 9th August 1973.
Bruce Gowers - Was first used as the director of the Bohemian Rhapsody video, shot on 10th November 1975 at Elstree Studios in London.
Faced with a difficult situation, the group improvised, setting aside a budget of £3,500 and hiring director Bruce Gowers for a four-hour (might have been three - yogurtbattle) shoot that took place without storyboarding or much of any rehearsal — and found Gowers rolling tape while the band members kept one eye on the clock, intent on getting out of the shoot in time to make it to the pub before last call (they did - yogurtbattle). (x)
(BTW, I’ve seen Roger say that they left on 2 AM that night to take the bus to their first concert, but the date of the video is widely reported as 10th of November so one of those has to be wrong and right now I’m going for Roger’s memory :P)
He also directed the video for You’re My Best Friend, no exact date. Now there is a bit of confusion over this video, and this is the closest I’ve found, from Ratty’s book, that makes sense:
Tumblr media
So it was recorded it a disused barn at Ridge Farm but not in April (as widely reported), but in mid-June (that’s when they rehearsed there). Makes far more sense as the single was released in mid-June as well.
Next up he directed the video for Somebody To Love shot both at Wessex Studios and Hyde Park in London, the former on 4th November 1976 and the latter on 18th September 1976, during the concert. Lastly, on 18th February 1977 he flew out to Miami (not as sometimes reported at Nassau Colisseum in Uniondale) to direct the video of Tie Your Mother Down in the Sportorium. The reason he never worked for Queen again afterwards, as told by him:
Gowers worked with Queen three more times before falling out with late singer Freddie Mercury because he was booked for another job. The pair had a “shouting match” in a London restaurant. “Freddie felt betrayed,” he said, “but didn't understand I was not under contract with them, and as a freelancer took work where I could get it. We never spoke properly after that.”
He did went on to work with (amongst others) Rod Stewart, the Rolling Stones, Genesis, Bee Gees, Elton John, Michael Jackson & Prince.
Derek Burnbridge - The director of We Are The Champions, shot on 6th October 1977 at New Royal Theatre in London. This was the first time the band called on the fan club for cheap extras and the band gave an impromptu short performance afterwards. It is unknown why the band never worked with him again, but he did went on to direct videos for The Police & AC/DC.
Rock Flicks - Now, this sounds more like the name of a company than a person to me, especially as the Queen videos are the only videos found related to it, but anyway ‘Rock Flicks’ was behind the Spread Your Wings/We Will Rock You video shoot, shot in January 1978 at Roger’s new home in Surrey, the one where Freddie was drunk and everyone cold. It is therefore unknown who really directed this videos.
Dennis De Vallance - This guy worked on several Queen videos, which is odd as the band didn’t like any of them. Not like the band which is normally so perfectionistic. Anyway, he first directed the Fat Bottomed Girls video on 28th October 1978 at the Convention Center in Dallas, where Queen were playing. At the same time, the performance footage for Bicycle Race was shot, but the band hated that so much only the footage of the nude cyclists was used in the original cut. This footage is also credited to Dennis as director, and was shot on 17th September at Wimbledon Stadium in London. He later returned to direct the Love Of My Life promo video on the 25th April 1979 in Tokyo. At last, he made a good Queen video when he directed the Crazy Little Thing Called Love one, on the 22nd September 1979 at Trillion Studios in London.
Interesting side note on the Crazy video: it was choreographed by Arlene Phillips, who also choreographed the We Will Rock You musical!
Now the next one is a bit tricky, his name is written as both Jorgen Kliebenst and Jörgen Kliebenstein (it certainly isn’t the first one), but I wonder if this might be the same guy as Hans-Jürgen Kliebenstein, as that is the only person with a similar name I can found on Google who is also working for TV - Anyway, this guy, whatever his name is, directed the Don’t Stop Me Now video shot at Forrest Nationale in Belgium before Queen’s concert there on 26th January 1979.
Keith McMillan - The guy that managed to fall down an orchestra pit at the Rainbow Theatre in London while working on the video for Save Me. Because the director injured himself, the band had to return to the video shoot a week later, on 22nd December 1979 at Alexandra Palace. This guy had worked before Queen with Kate Bush and Paul McCartney (who might have recommended him to them as he was the one behind the Concerts for the People of Kampuchea that Queen performed in the same month, which Keith also directed). He later worked with Blondie and Simple Minds.
Brian Grant - Directed multiple Queen videos, with mixed successes. His first was the video for Play The Game at Trillion Studios in London on 29th May 1980. Two years later he also shot the ill-fated videos for Back Chat and Calling All Girls back-to-back, in an unknown location in July 1982. He worked with various famous acts in the 80s, amongst them Kim Wilde, Peter Gabriel, Spandau Ballet, Whitney Houston and Van Halen.
Daniella Green - Hey, a female director! She directed the video for Another One Bites The Dust, shot on the 9th August 1980 in Dallas at the Reunion Arena. Nothing else I could find about her, sadly.
Mike Hodges - Just after Queen finished work on the Flash Gordon soundtrack, they shot a video for the theme song with Flash Gordon director Mike directing it - I’ll come back to him when discussing Flash Gordon. The video was shot in November 1980 at Anvil Studios and Roger had to take a break from recording his solo album to shoot it. Mike also shot the video for Body Language (yes, that one) in April 1982 in Toronto. Here’s Mike talking about that one:
Your promo video for Queen's song Body Language was apparently the first film banned by MTV. It's certainly the most erotic piece of work you've made. How did you and the band arrive at the concept? While recording the music for FLASH GORDON, I became friendly with all the members of Queen. They were fantastic fun to work with. In fact, shortly afterwards, I shot the movie’s music video. Then Freddie Mercury approached me to do the same with a song he’d written, Body Language. There’s the eroticism you talk about - in the song itself. The concept was Freddie’s and I was only too happy to capture it on film. We completed it in a Toronto studio after a truly exhausting 24-hour (okay, that makes the lack of enthusiasm by the band even more understandable - yogurtbattle) shoot! (x)
David Mallet - Now, there’s a guy that should have his own page, so much has he done with Queen. He came to work with Queen as he had worked with David Bowie previously. His first video was the one for Under Pressure, and he went on to do the videos for Radio Ga Ga, I Want To Break Free, Hammer To Fall, Who Wants To Live Forever, I Want It All, several of Freddie’s solo videos, and some work with Queen since Freddie’s death. Other people he has worked with include Joan Jett, Def Leppard, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Tina Turner, AC/DC and INXS.
Radio Ga Ga: Shot on the 22nd & 23rd of November 1983 at Shepperton Studios in London.
I Want To Break Free: Shot on 22nd March  (the audience part), 23rd March (the drag part), 1st April (the ballet part rehearsal) and 5th April 1984 (the ballet part performance) at Limehouse Studios in London.
Hammer To Fall: Shot on the 25th August 1984 at the Forrest Nationale in Brussels. Footage from the 24th was also used for audience shots, as not enough fans showed up.
Who Wants To Live Forever: Shot on 16th September 1986 at a warehouse in Tobacco Wharf in London (by now demolished). Of course Roger was drunk here.
I Want It All: Shot on 22nd April 1989 at Elstree Studios.
The producer on several of these videos was Jacqui Byford, mentioned in the liner notes of The Miracle.
Tim Pope - Right. This guy had previously done the oh-so-great Man On Fire video, so Queen decided to hire him to shoot the video for It’s A Hard Life. The shoot ended up lasting one week, by far the longest of any Queen video. It was shot in Munich of course, in mid-June 1984 at Arri Film Studios. Now it wasn’t just Pope, the band was getting a bit out of hand with their videos then anyway, which probably had other reasons as well. He also worked with Soft Cell, The Cure, The Cars, Hall & Oates, Talk Talk, David Bowie & Paul McCartney (there’s a bit of an eighties theme going on here).
DoRo, The Torpedo Twins or Rudi Dolezal and Hannes Rossacher - The other prominent Queen directors, from one of their favourite cities Vienna. Responsible for even more Queen videos than David Mallet, especially in Freddie’s dying days:
One Vision: Shot in August 1985 in Munich, where Queen where recording for A Kind Of Magic. Also directed the shot documentary surrounding the video.
Friends Will Be Friends: Shot at JVC Studios in London on 15th May 1986, another Fan Club call.
Breakthru: Shot in June 1989 on the Nene Valley Railway in Cambridgeshire. Starring of course Debbie.
The Invisible Man: A video for Roger’s song shot on Roger’s birthday! Not very surprising then that Freddie had those glasses on for Roger’s birthday party. Apparently there was also a birthday cake wheeled in during recording and large amounts of champagne were drunk! Date of course was 26th July 1989, location Pinewood Studios in London.
Scandal: Again at Pinewood Studios, this one was shot on 27th September 1989.
The Miracle: Shot at Elstree Studios on 23rd November 1989. Freddie was portrayed by Ross McCall, who went on to become a professional actor, playing most famously in Band of Brothers.
Innuendo: This one was actually a collaboration between Rudi Dolezal and Jerry Hibbert (mentioned in the album notes). Jerry is an animator who has also worked on Fireman Sam. The video was made in December 1990.
Headlong: Shot at Metropolis Studios in London on 23rd November 1991 and another unknown date late 1990.
I’m Going Slightly Mad: Shot on 15th February 1991 at Wembley Studios in London.
These Are The Days Of Our Lives: Shot on 30th May 1991 (Freddie’s last video) at Limestone Studios in London. Brian couldn’t attend as he was in the US promoting Innuendo, but he was later edited in, with his parts filmed in June.
The Show Must Go On: The band wasn’t in this as Freddie has become too ill, but an edited montage was release as the video in October 1991.
No-One But You: Filmed at the Bray Studios in London in 1997.
After Freddie’s death Roger and Brian also made appearances at DoRo parties in 1992 (Hannes’ 40th) and 1998 (Rudi’s 40th).
Saul Swimmer - The amongst Queen members not very popular director of We Will Rock You, by now known as Rock Montreal, filmed on the 24th and 25th November 1981. It was renamed to its current name after Queen bought out Saul in 2006, after spending 25 years trying to get of him basically.
Gavin Taylor - The director of Live At Wembley, filmed on 13th July 1986. Also directed Live At The Bowl on 5th June 1982. Sadly not with us anymore.
Zsombolyai János -The director of the Hungarian Rhapsody, filmed on 27th July 1986 in of course Budapest.
That was it for the first part of the Queen index!
