Vir Biotechnology (VIR) Gains 11% This Week on BARDA Contract October 7 2022
Shares of Vir Biotechnology, Inc. (VIR Quick QuoteVIR – Free Report) have gained 10.7% so far this week after the company was awarded a multi-year contract by the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (“BARDA”), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response. The multi-year contract also allows for a potential total investment of up to $1 billion for the development of influenza and other emerging infectious disease or medical countermeasure candidates. Vir will receive an initial investment of approximately $55 million from BARDA to support the development of VIR-2482, an investigational prophylactic monoclonal antibody for seasonal and pandemic influenza viruses. A phase II pre-exposure prophylaxis study is expected to begin in the second half of 2022 with initial data anticipated in mid-2023. BARDA can exercise 12 options in further support of the development of pre-exposure prophylactic antibodies including and beyond VIR-2482 for the prevention of influenza illness or possibly supporting medical countermeasures for other pathogens of pandemic potential. Please note that Vir signed a collaboration agreement with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK Quick QuoteGSK – Free Report) in 2021 for VIR-2482. Per the terms, GSK has an exclusive option to lead post-phase II development and commercialization of VIR-2482 and will pay the company an option exercise fee of $300 million upon exercise. Chemoprevention ( Lee Sin Win)
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the major cancer incidents and has a high mortality rate worldwide. It is also one of the most common and one of the most preventable cancers globally, with powerful but strongly missed potential for primary, secondary and tertiary prevention. According to Brenner & Chen (2018), CRC incidence has traditionally been the highest in the Western countries, but it is now increasing rapidly throughout the other parts of the world. CRC have few causing factors such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, physical inactivity and being overweight, with other common diseases
With the progress of scientific research over the past two decades, science have brought major advances in CRC screening and therapeutics. As a result, the incidence and mortality of CRC have started to decline and data shows that there is improvement in the increasing number of CRC survivors. Patients who have completed their therapy session show high interest in adopting dietary and lifestyle activities changes in an attempt to reduce the risk of recurrent cancer. According to Brenner & Chen (2018), this moment is known as the “teachable moment” for oncologists. It is a time when patients are receptive and willing to consider a different lifestyle approach to reduce the risk of cancer recurrence.
There are now statistics that show the importance in improving dietary and lifestyle behaviours for patients that were diagnosed with CRC. With the rising number of CRC survivors and advances in the understanding of several therapeutic agents, people are showing new interest in developing new strategies for CRC risk reduction among CRC patients. The United States National Cancer Institute (NCI)-supported cooperative group clinical trials system wishes to optimize the approach to reduce risk among CRC survivors over the next decade and beyond. NCI will start conducting trials that will involve a prolonged intervention period using oral medications to inhibit colorectal carcinogenesis.
Currently, a few medical components that are under review by the clinics as a tertiary prevention of CRC. These medical components such as 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG CoA) reductase inhibitors, NON-STEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DRUGS (NSAIDS) and low-dose aspirin.
STATIN
According to a study by Voorneveld et al. (2017) , it is reported that there is a decreased risk of death from any cause and from cancer in statin users belonging to a cohort of colon cancer patients. Statins act as lipid-lowering compounds through inhibition of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase (HMGCR).It is a key enzyme of the mevalonate pathway involved in the cholesterol biosynthesis and in post-translational modification (isoprenylation) of small GTPase family members such as Ras and Rho. The statin effect is correlated with intact bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling.The reported data based on Bifulco & Gazzerro, (2018) represent an expanded evidence-based analysis of statin antitumor activity. In the cohort analyzed by Voorneveld et al. (2017), statin users had more comorbidities and experienced tumors at an earlier stage than nonusers. In a recent analysis based on Bifulco & Gazzerro (2018) , a research was done to evaluate the relationship between lipid traits and colorectal cancer risk. A study by Rodriguez‐Broadbent et al. (2017) also yielded similar results that showed single nucleotide polymorphisms mimicking HMGCR inhibition were associated with 43% reduction in colorectal cancer occurrence. Intriguingly, recent data suggest that statins are able to prevent the progression from adenoma to adenocarcinoma rather than to directly inhibit cancer incidence. In the colon cancer cohort analyzed by Voorneveld et al. (2017), statin use after diagnosis significantly improved survival in colon cancer patients with intact BMP signaling and wild-type SMAD4.
ASPIRIN
Based on an observational study by Coyle et al.( 2016), there is evidence that the usage of low-dose aspirin which is categorized under chemoprevention is showing results that it can reduce CRC risk. According to Coyle et al. (2016), the first clinical evidence emerged in 1988 from a case-control study conducted in Melbourne, Australia, which showed that aspirin reduced the risk of developing CRC. This finding also shows that aspirin was associated with a lower risk of developing CRC (relative risk (RR) 0.73, 95 % confidence interval (CI), 0.67–0.79). Based on a research by (Li et al., 2015), aspirin goes along with enhanced survival after CRC diagnosis. Not only that, Sostres (2015) conducted a study that shows aspirin is one of the most likely key mechanisms that are related to cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibition but an additional role of non-COX mechanisms has also been postulated. Then, observations of enhanced survival of CRC patients treated with metformin should be followed up by randomised controlled trials (RCTs).According to Weberpals et al. (2016) , there are drugs that are commonly used for treatment of comorbidities among CRC patients such as beta-blockers, an apparent beneficial role for prognosis seems to have been spurious, and could have resulted from major flaws in pertinent pharmacoepidemiologic studies, such as immortal time bias.
NSAID
According to Rigas & Tsioulias (2015) , there are multiple epidemiologic studies, randomized clinical trials in patients and pooled analyses of patients who were administering non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for the prevention of cardiovascular disease could show that conventional NSAIDs are able to prevent CRC to a certain extent. However, chronic medication with NSAIDs also bears various serious side effects that could harm the patients.Therefore , researchers are slowly researching newer and chemically modified NSAIDs so that the drugs could be more effective and safe in the future. In addition to that , recent work also indicates that targeting earlier stages of colorectal carcinogenesis with these new NSAIDs could be a promising approach for treating this malignant disease, since it may only require a relatively short use of these therapeutics.
Taking medication is not that easy isn’t? On paper, take the pills that were given by your oncologist, or doctor, by the time requested. Sometimes, concern seeps into our minds when taking medication, especially those that need to be taken in the long run. A lot of factors are considered, such as the opinion of others around us. One friend said that taking this medication isn’t good? Another mentioned about visiting this doctor again? What about side effects? (Kahwati et al., 2016)
The theory of planned behaviour is a theory that can be used to predict if the patient will perform a health related behaviour (Hasan et al., 2019). As explained by "The Theory of Planned Behavior" (2020) the theory of planned behaviour consists of 3 factors. It includes, attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioural control.
Attitude is the negative and positive feelings of the patient towards the behaviour, in this case, its taking medication to prevent CRC. Subjective norm is the view of the individual that has an influence on the patient (individual with authority, deemed to be more knowledgeable, trusted individuals) on the medication. Perceived behavioural control is the perceived difficulty of the patient towards the behavior. If the behaviour is too difficult to accomplish at first glance, it steers the patient away from completing the task.
Using this theory, it is possible to understand why the patient would refrain from taking the prescribed medication. Removing those barriers can increase adherence. For example, attitude towards the medication can be changed by introducing and explaining the benefits of the medication. Another tip can be to inform the individual in the patient’s life about the importance of the medication, so the patient would be more willing to take the medication. A study done by Granger et.al (2015) showed that adherence has gone up from 32% to 70%. In this study, patients were given intense education before the prescription of the medication in the hospital. The patients were informed about the goal of the medication, and response plans.
Another study done by Kopelowiz et. al. (2015) tested the possibilities of multi-family group intervention (MFG) paired with theory of planned behaviour. MFG intervention is an intervention method that involves the patient’s family, and is process oriented. MFG allows the family members to set the problem focus instead of the therapist. Then the problems are solved, giving the patient a ‘tailored’ solution for their problem. Culture specific concerns can be adapted and solved through MFG because the families are encouraged to point out all the problems and concerns they have. This fits the social norms aspect of the theory of planned behaviour.
The process of MFG as discussed by Kopelowiz et. al. (2015) first started with having the patient identify the problems they had with the medication. Then, the clinician or therapist addresses false beliefs or understanding of the medication by educating them with supporting research and journals. Then, other concerns such as weight gain (an example by Kopelowiz et. al., 2015), are dealt by having the group members voice out potential solutions.
The next step is to correct and change the social norms of the patient. The family members now voice out their concern and problems, the therapist addresses the problems, and correct misinformation. Any other additional problems are then solved by other group members. This corresponds to the social norm aspect of the theory of planned behaviour.
Lastly, perceived power of control was dealt with by correcting inaccurate beliefs and estimation of power (to perform the behaviour). The example that was used to study is the ability to purchase the medication. Suggestions such as ways to get more affordable and free medication is then explained.
Another model to consider is the transtheoretical model. The transtheoretical model describes the process of behaviour change in 5 stages. The behavioural change does not occur in a linear method, but in a spiral, where it is possible to move to previous stages via relapse. Intervention can be used to help the patient transition through the stages. The stages are explained below, and interventions will be discussed after. ("The Transtheoretical Model (Stages of Change)", 2020)
The first stage is precontemplation. Pre-contemplation is when the patient has no intention to change. This is likely before the advice of a doctor, or right after relapse (not adhering to the medication schedule after taking it for a long time). This stage can also be that not realizing that the patient is at high risk of CRC recurrence.
The next stage is contemplation. This stage occurs when the patient decides that there is a need to take the medication, and is considering to adhere to the medication schedule. The patient is thinking about the change, but not putting effort into changing yet. This should occur when the patient understands that they are at risk of CRC reoccurrence.
Next, preparation. Preparation is when the patient has the thought and intention to make change, in this case, it's to adhere to the medical advice given by their doctor.
Action comes next. This stage is the patient performing the behaviour. The patient is now taking medication as scheduled, in the correct dosage.
The last stage is maintenance. This stage is to maintain the new behaviour, and build up resistance to change. The old behaviour is replaced with the new, and incorporated to the patient’s daily life. This stage would be that the patient is getting used to taking the medication, and have no problems with taking it daily.
Conclusion
In conclusion, statin, aspirin and NSAID are medications that can help prevent the recurrence of CRC. Patients might not be keen to start taking medication, and may have a variety of issues from financial capabilities to afford the medicine to personal beliefs. There are ways to overcome such issues, such as talking to a medical professional and weight out the pros and cons. Talking to a therapist, or participating in a support group can help as well.

How many apartments are we building?
Another day, another property bust article from me old mucker Roger Montgomery, this time in Professional Planner:
Usually when writing financial articles or documents there’s an internal checking process that goes something like this:
“Does this make sense? No, this does not make sense.” – but for some reason this doesn’t seem to apply when Monty writes about dwelling supply.
The only reason I can think of is to cause people to panic, sell their home, and invest in a managed fund (happy to stand corrected, though).
Have we been producing 230,000 apartments annually, or indeed anywhere close to that level?
Let’s take a look at some numbers…
How many?
2016 was by some margin the greatest calendar year on record for dwelling construction in Australia.
In total just under 114,000 houses were completed, and fewer than 95,000 attached dwellings (including all townhouses, ‘plexes, units, and apartments).
It was a a monster year for dwelling construction with the industry operating close to full capacity, as evidenced by price inflation in materials and labour prices, and a shortage of qualified project managers.
These completion figures are before accounting for stock obsolescence or demolitions, and therefore the net additions were considerably lower.
The ABS preliminary estimates puts the annual net increase in the total number of dwellings at +172,800, but these are of course subject to revision, and in any case these are quite muddy waters at the best of times.
It’s certainly true that over time we have been building fewer houses per capita and shifting towards apartments.
In reality what happened was that by 2009 Sydney completions had crashed to their lowest level since 1953, while there was also the uncertainty of the financial crisis to contend with.
Since 2013, through a combination of record low interest rates, very strong dwelling price growth, and an unprecedented demand for new apartments from investors in China, developers have pumped out a record supply response.
But even still, we’re not near 230,000 apartments annually.
Even lobbing in everything that isn’t a house we’ve got nowhere near producing 230,000 units per annum.
Housing Industry Association (HIA) numbers have shown that while the number of semi-detached commencements has continued to rise, high-rise apartment starts have already fallen away quite sharply in Victoria and Queensland.
This means that peak commencements took place back in the 2016 financial year at a total of 116,300 multi-units.
One key dynamic through this property market cycle – given that it takes on average at least three times as long on average for an apartment to be completed versus a house – is that the pipeline of apartments still to be delivered remains huge in 2017.
Absorption
One other point, the population increase over the year to September 2016 was 1.5 per cent, or +348,700, not 1.3 per cent as claimed in Monty’s latest op-ed:
The rate of population growth also now appears to be accelerating, certainly to above 350,000 per annum, and possibly towards 400,000.
To put that in context, remember last year when Australia’s population hit 24 million?
This week, the population clock will fizz past 24,500,000.
Next year, we’ll pass 25 million.
As I noted 13 months ago – when Monty argued that there was already 18 months worth of oversupply – any way you spun the numbers back then you couldn’t get to an oversupply of 200,000 dwellings.
For that reason, Monty’s claim that rents are falling around the country is also not correct.
I noted here this week that “Sydney rental crisis” could be the next big story as investors are clubbed out of the market, and the latest figures from Domain Group suggest that this could follow hard upon.
For as long as the present rate of immigration and population growth continues, you can more or less forget any oversupply in Melbourne, but the usual regional caveats apply.
There could be some challenges on the outer-Sydney fringe, for high rise apartments in Blacktown and Parramatta, while inner city Brisbane apartments have been a hot topic for at least a couple of years now.

Snakebite envenoming: Member States provide WHO with clear mandate for global action
The 71st World Health Assembly today adopted a resolution formally providing the World Health Organization with a strong mandate to develop a comprehensive plan to support countries in implementing measures for increased access to effective treatment to people who get bitten by venomous snakes.
“The resolution provides WHO with a clear mandate to work with affected countries, partners, stakeholders and industry” said Dr Ren Minghui, WHO Assistant Director-General for Communicable Diseases. “We need to work with everyone to coordinate multi-focal measures that can save lives and in most cases life-long disabilities resulting from envenoming.
Discussion around the resolution, proposed by several Member States and coordinated by the governments of Colombia and Costa Rica, was strongly supported by more than 31 countries.
“The Government of Costa Rica is highly satisfied with the resolution which represents a big step forward in the global efforts to reduce the burden of snakebite envenoming,” said Ambassador Elayne Whyte Gómez of Costa Rica.
The adoption of the resolution follows last year’s recognition of snakebite envenoming (poisoning from snake bites) as a neglected tropical disease and the recommendation by WHO’s Executive Board in January 2018 to the Health Assembly.
WHO has already set up a working group to prepare a strategic plan to assess and address the global burden of snakebite envenoming, especially in mid- to low-income countries. The plan, being developed by the 28-member working group of experts, is expected by the end of 2018.
“Our focus is to find integrated, cost–effective and sustainable approaches to lessen the impact of snakebite envenoming on the health and socioeconomic status of mostly poor people who are exposed to this problem,” said Dr David Williams, a member of the core working group, who also heads the Australian Venom Research Unit at the University of Melbourne. “The aim is to reduce the scale of the problem by achieving a 50% reduction in deaths and disabilities by 2030.”
The plan builds on WHO’s concept of Universal Health coverage and seeks to ensure that snakebite victims are included in the drive to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
Global burden
About 5.4 million snake bites occur each year, resulting in 1.8 to 2.7 million cases of envenomings. It is estimated these result in the deaths of 81 000–138 000 people a year and leave another 400 000 with permanent disabilities.
Most victims are poor rural dwellers and many are women and children, who are prone to suffer more severe effects due to their smaller body mass.
Bites by venomous snakes can cause acute medical emergencies. These include severe paralysis that may prevent breathing, bleeding disorders that can lead to fatal [hemorrhage], irreversible kidney failure, and severe local tissue destruction that can cause permanent disability and amputation.
Effective treatment of snakebite envenoming is currently unavailable in many countries. Where treatment is available, the cost can be prohibitive. The long-term effects of poor-quality treatment can drive vulnerable people further into debt and poverty.

In July 2017, news cameras watched as more than 50 employees at Three Square Market, the vending-solutions company where McMullan is president, voluntarily received chip implants of their own. Rather than a simple scan-to-function process like most of Sweden’s chips use, the chips and readers around Three Square Market’s River Falls, Wisconsin office were all part of a multi-stage feedback network. For example: Your chip could grant you access to your computer—but only if it had already unlocked the front door for you that day. “Now,” says McMullan of last summer, “I’ve actually done something that enhances our network security.”
The problem McMullan’s chips cleverly solve is relatively small-scale—but it’s still a problem, and any potential new use case represents a significant step forward for a chip evangelist like him. As with most technologies, the tipping point for implantable chips will come when they become so useful they’re hard to refuse. It could happen sooner than you think: In September 2017, Three Square Market launched an offshoot, Three Square Chip, that is developing the next generation of commercial microchip implants, with a slew of originative health features that could serve as the best argument yet that microchips’ benefits can outweigh our anxieties about them.
Though new to the American workplace in this implantable form, radio frequency identification (RFID) technology has been around for decades, and has long been considered secure enough for commonplace use. RFID ear tags are used to register almost all farm and ranch livestock with the U.S. National Animal Identification System (in Australia, the system is mandatory). If you’ve checked luggage on a Delta Airlines flight, you can thank RFID luggage tags for the fact that your bag arrived at the same destination you did. And you probably already have a personal RFID chip that goes everywhere with you—it’s in your credit card.

But of course, the fear surrounding RFID implants has little to do with RFID itself, and everything to do with implantation. American pets safely receive RFID implants without complication every day; even so, many of their owners would cite something akin to safety as a reason not to get one of their own. When a company called Verichip developed its own health-care-oriented microchip implants in the early aughts, its research indicated that 90 percent of Americans were uncomfortable with the technology. The company got FDA approval for its devices in 2004, but folded just three years later, in large part due to studies that suggested a potential link between RFID transponders and cancer in lab animals. (The risks of cancer caused by RFID have since been found to be virtually nonexistent for humans and negligible for animals, and one 2016 study even suggested that embedding active RFID transponders within cancerous tumors could be an effective means of treatment.)
A decade later, floating throughout the eruptive hullabaloo around Three Square’s “chip party” were all kinds of fears—some credible, some less so—about the dangers of introducing subdermal radio technology to the American workplace: That companies might make widespread use of this technology mandatory, or that implanted microchips might be hacked or used to track wearers, or that hands might be severed in the name of home break-ins. Many critics, including state legislators working to pass bills that would restrict RFID implants, are fearful that the metal components and circuitry in the chips would mean certain death if a “wearer” were exposed to an MRI machine or defibrillator.
Then there are broader fears about the use of chip technology to track humans: Before the damning research halted Verichip’s growth, the company’s chairman suggested in a 2006 appearance on “Fox & Friends” that Verichip implants could be used to register migrant workers at the border and verify their identities in the workplace; that same year, former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe reportedly proposed to then-senators Arlen Specter and Jeff Sessions that the chips could be implanted into Colombian workers before they entered the United States for seasonal work. Meanwhile, some fundamentalist Christian communities remain convinced that the microchip implant is the manifestation of the biblically portended mark of the beast. But the primary challenge to RFID implants remains the simple underlying question posed over and over again in response to the tech: Is this really necessary?
In 1998, British scientist Kevin Warwick (known by the moniker “Captain Cyborg”) became the first human to receive an RFID microchip implant. But since then, development has been slow. Kayla Heffernan, a researcher in the department of computing and information systems at the University of Melbourne’s School of Engineering, blames the fact that chipping hasn’t yet been accepted widely on what she sees as “a chicken-and-egg problem.” “People don’t get them because they’re not useful enough yet, but because there’s not a market the devices [remain] relatively unchanged,” says Heffernan.
McMullan hopes to solve the second half of that problem as a means of invigorating the first. Shortly after last summer’s chip party, he began meeting with cardiologist Michael Mirro, who serves as the director of the Parkview Research Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Dr. Mirro’s team and Three Square Chip developers are currently working on prototypes of RFID implants that will be able to continually monitor an individual’s vitals, enabling both patients and doctors to access highly accurate real-time information.

As McMullan describes it, the decision to develop RFID technology for medical purposes was motivated by more than just business savvy—it’s what intrigued him about the chips in the first place. The technology for better, potentially life-saving solutions has long existed, he says, “it’s just, frankly, nobody decided to take it on.”
It’s an undeniably personal project for McMullan: His wife, Leah, suffers from a chronic nerve disorder caused by a medical accident in 2009 and relies on an implanted spinal-cord stimulator to manage her pain. When he talks to her about the chips, he says, she reminds him, “If I did not have that nerve stimulator in my back I would have committed suicide a long time ago.’”
Nerve stimulators are among the many implantable technologies that have leapt onto the health-care market in full force. Insertable cardiac monitors like the Reveal LINQ have replaced sometimes-finicky stick-on patches as the most reliable option for patients with chronic heart conditions, and just two months ago, the FDA approved the first-ever long-term implantable continuous glucose-monitoring system for people with diabetes.
Three Square Chip says that its medical RFID implants will be powered by body heat, and McMullan’s plans to develop a single piece of hardware to aid patients with a wider range of conditions could make the chips more affordable than devices with more specialized (and limited) functions. “Many heart patients, right now, the only time they know they’ve got a problem is when they’re in the back of an ambulance,” says McMullan.
The company estimates that it will be selling chips capable of tracking a wearer’s live vital signs in a little over a year, but a few other developments will come first. McMullan hopes that people will soon consider storing their medical information on encrypted RFID chips, and the group is also working on a way to make GPS-enabled chips available as an option for families to track relatives suffering from severe dementia—another use for the chips that poses both obvious benefits and legitimate concerns.
“There’s an interest, but also a controversy, with the actual GPS tracking,” says Dr. Luis Martinez, a preventative medicine specialist in San Juan who has worked with McMullan on chip development since before last year’s media frenzy. “A lot of parents will feel actually safe if they can track real-time where their children are, given abductions, child trafficking, and all that.” But, he says, there are even more use cases: “Other populations ... are being looked at for different reasons: law enforcement, or say you could use a GPS chip to identify registered sex offenders. I think it’ll be a case-by-case basis where different countries or different societies will decide.”
At the same time as the technology is becoming more powerful, people are becoming more comfortable with the notion of implantables. “If we think about 1998 to now, a lot has changed about the way we regard the body,” says Heffernan. This shift, she says, is traceable from body modifications like tattoos and piercings all the way up to the chips McMullan is developing. “Pacemakers are routine surgery. Plastic surgery is less taboo now.” Hundreds of thousands of American bodies now contain cochlear implants, IUDs, nerve stimulators, artificial joints, implantable birth-control rods, and beyond. “There’s a trend towards putting devices inside the body, not just for life or death situations, but for convenience such as contraceptives, menstrual aids, contact lenses,” Heffernan says. “So as we’ve become more comfortable with this, insertables become more acceptable.”
In the year since Three Square Market’s chip party, the technology has become mundane to those surrounded by it. “We don’t think about it within the company really at all,” says customer-service manager Melissa Koepp, who chose to get the implant. Her non-chipped colleagues are similarly nonchalant about the company’s futuristic update. In fact, one of the most common reasons employees opted not to receive the implant wasn’t about the implications of the technology at all: “When I watched them chip Todd,” says Katy Melstrom, vice president of marketing, “and I saw the size of the needle, I said, ‘yeah, I’ll wait until we get a smaller version.’”
Yet for all of the implantable gadgets Americans use, and the heaps of location-enabled gizmos we own, the first commercial device with both of these features will be significant. A teenager who brings her iPhone to the school bathroom with her can one day choose not to. If visiting a physician to remove the chip in her hand requires similar parental permissions to other invasive medical procedures, well, then, we know how that episode of Black Mirror ends.

Before Three Square Market’s “chip party” last summer, five states, including Wisconsin, had RFID privacy laws preventing employer-mandated microchip implantation. Since then, only five more have introduced similar bills.
“I believe this technology is going to grow exponentially, in stages, and in a very short period of time,” says New Jersey State Assemblyman Ronald Dancer, whose bill will be voted on in the coming months. “We need to make sure that there’s full disclosure and consent.”
The legal tenets of disclosure and consent can be complicated enough in the workplace, but how will lawmakers and experts in security and tech react when required to define consent for a patient with advanced dementia? “Laws should not regulate technologies, but the actions we don’t want to happen,” says Heffernan. “This is the problem with some current regulation—it’s too slow because it focuses on technologies, not actions.”
But sooner or later, the laws will change, and the frightening will become familiar. After all, all it took in Sweden for RFID implants to become widespread and normalized was the simple appeal of never having to deal with a lost key.
