april was always a horrible month for you. exams and tests in highschool and middle school never wavered when you got to college. to be honest, you weren’t a bad student, A’s & B’s were common on your report card in elementary and middle school, and finished highschool with a 3.4 gpa. though, when you got to college, deciding to take art history as a minor and psychology as your major, you quickly realized you might’ve bit off more than you could chew. recently, your grades in art history have been.. hindering, to say the least. 

that’s why you’re here now, sitting on a chair on an outside table at a cafe across from the prettiest boy you’ve ever met. no exaggeration, your classmate and new friend who was extremely skilled in art history, had caught you breathless. unintentionally, too. you could recall the day vividly, when he sat down next to you and noticed you were struggling by the way your eyebrows furrowed and your eyes squinted at the work in front of you, when he realized it was his favorite subject ever, and when he offered to be your “unofficial tutor,” as he put it.

renjun was breathtaking, to put it lightly. to the way his eyes sparkled when he smiled, the slope of his nose, and so much more. it wasn’t just physical admiration, either. renjun had a heart of gold. he had quite the creative mind, too. hence why he was helping you with art history right now.

“ugh,” you groaned, rolling your eyes and placing your elbow on the table, your chin in your palm. “why did i ever think art history would be a good idea…”

renjun let out a scoff, though the corner of his lips upturned in a way that heavily contradicted any anger his scoff implied. “it’s only hard because you’re making it hard. the more you groan and moan, the longer this’ll take.” 

his reply made you roll your eyes, yet you couldn’t help but smile. “you’re lucky i like you,” you stated casually, sitting up from your position on the table and taking a sip from your latte.

his smiled wavered ever so slightly, in a way you couldn’t not point out. “you okay?” you asked, raising your eyebrow as you set down your drink.

he nodded half-heartedly, sighing and looking down at the scattered notes on the table he had made for you, each one intricately written with even some doodle-explanation of events or ideas. “yeah, i just… i like you, too.”

you tilted your head, letting out a laugh, a bit of confusion in your voice. “uh… thanks, i guess?”

he shook his head, looking up, his eyes meeting yours. “like… more than in a friendly way, i think.”

you blinked, your words caught in your throat.

“…huh?”

“yeah, i mean, look at all of these..” he stated, his voice trailing off as his eyes flickered over the notes. your eyes followed his, your cheeks heating up as you mentally processed how much work and love he put into these just for you. you looked at him, his eyes finally meeting yours again. “i like you too, renjun. in a… more than friends kinda way.”

as much as april can suck, sometimes spring suffering is worth it for the summer sun to shine.
