“Headcannons”
“Headcannons”
Karl Heisenberg
I started playing re8. It only took me three years to get the game but it only cost twenty bucks! I want to write a fanfic for Heisenberg but I hurt my wrist and can't write so I've just been jotting down headcannons in my free time before I forget them. I have a lot of them so is this going to be messy and unorganized? Yes
Tags: Randomness... There's no specific theme to these, some x reader stuff, contains some NSFW topics. He's a perv after all
Word count: 2445

Look at his cheeks! I just wanna squish 'em!
꩜…꩜…꩜…꩜…꩜…꩜…꩜…꩜…꩜…꩜…꩜…꩜…꩜…꩜…
First off, in my own little world Ethan does join Karl but not until after he goes through his entire factory and sees how truly strong he is. He's just like "Man fuck this! I don't want to do this shit again." Killing another Lord, I mean. So he joins Heisenberg under one condition: no using Rose. And Heisenberg reluctantly agrees. Also Heisenberg knows how to put her back together so it's a good idea to keep him alive. And let's be real, there's no way he's going to be able to use her powers. She's fucking six months old. What is he going to do? Fucking throw her at Miranda? If Ethan was able to kill her by himself it'd be a lot easier with Karl to help without even using Rose.
Also when the 'curse' is lifted from the village and everyone is set free, the other Lords are able to come back because of their little crystal forms Duke collected. Rose was put in that crystal form so I think that they'd be able to come back because of that. That way everyone can have their favourite characters back :)
Anyway, now that I've got that out of my system, headcannon time!
This first one is actually my Papa's, he's watching me play since he didn't watch the gameplay when it came out. Also he loves that Heisenberg calls Ethan 'Papa'. I think you can piece that one together...
He totally sees Heisenberg as being that 'weird' uncle. I showed him some fanart where Karl is like that and he loved it.
Heisenberg is the kinda guy to let kids try a sip of his alcohol, ask them if they want to smoke, just plain being chaotic, and anything else that just pisses of their parents. Mostly Ethan and Alcina. He's has a love hate relationship with Alcina's daughters. He acts like he hates them, and sometimes he truly does, but he secretly likes them. He just hates their mother.
He stayed in the village after Miranda died. Sure, he hates the 'family', but he wants to learn all the secrets of the village. That's actually based off one of the files I read.
He's a history nerd. He was sheltered from the outside world so he knows nothing but give him the internet and a few highschool textbooks and he learned everything in like a week. He finds everything so interesting. He particularly liked the industrial era.
And modern technology... Oh he loves that. It took him a while to understand the internet. He loves how horny it is. It didn't take him that long to actually learn how to use a phone though. He's a fast learner. However he loves taking them apart so you had to find him a bunch of old ones so he'd stop taking apart his... and yours.
He loves Wallmart. You took him there. He liked specifically the kitchen aisle because he made all the pans float. But when you took him to Home Depot? He had a fucking field day. You two ended up staying there until it closed...
He had to ask who the hell 'Magneto' was because people keep comparing them. Especially that kid that saw him making the pans float in Walmart. That's when he fell in love with the X-Men comics. And got even more excited when you told him there were movies. He may or may not have tried to do experiments based off the comics... He specifically loves Wolverine because 'Hugh Jackman is funny and extremely hot.'
We all know this man is Bi. His voice actor is extremely 'fruity'. There's no way he's straight.
His love language is gift giving! It suits him perfectly. He's always making stuff. He'll make you lots of necklaces out of old gears he doesn't need. He also makes lot's of toys for Rose. (Which all need to be pre-approved by Ethan) He likes to make you jewelry but he'll also make you little inventions. Anything that'll make your life easier.
Oh, you complained about somethin? He's making an invention for that. You were pissed when he took apart your coffee maker but he ended up making a new one that brews the perfect cup everytime. If you ask him for anything, he'll make it for you.
His factory doesn't actually have a kitchen. He just stores all his kitchen appliances in a random room. Also, you have to constantly remind him to eat. You don't allow him to use his excuse "But I'm a Lord. I can go days without eating!"
He only showers once a month... Why would he bathe so often if he's just going to get filthy again?
This man doesn't own a bed. Doesn't even have a bedroom. He's used to going days without sleeping so why need one? But he does have an old, brown sunk in couch that he had to repair a lot of times over the years. It looks uncomfortable as hell but it's actually surprisingly comfortable?
He has random arm chairs and other furniture he picked up off the side off the road scattered along his factory. Though, that couch is his favourite. He'll lay on it while you lay on top of his chest because there isn't actually enough room for the both of you.
So he ends up spending the night at your house a lot since you actually have a bed. But when he's there, he's constantly trying to take apart your stuff. He gets scolded a lot.
He loves pets, but can't have any of his own because his factory isn't safe for one and he already doesn't take care of himself. There's no way he'd have time taking care of a pet. He doesn't want to put the poor thing through that. He's more of a dog person, obviously, but he does like cats. Especially scruffy ones that kinda looks like a small dog. So if you have a pet, he's coming over a lot.
He doesn't like dates. He'd rather you hang out in his factory, or he'll go to your place and have dinner. He does like walks though. Around the village, a park, the beach. But it's at the beach, he's using his powers to find whatever washed up metal. He's actually found some pretty cool stuff. No need to buy one of those expensive ass metal detectors he's like a personal one.
If you fall asleep when you're at his factory, he'll take his coat off and lay it on you. Trenchcoats were originally used as blankets in world war two. You can be doing your own little thing when you're hanging out with him in his factory. He just likes you're company. He's fine with parallel play. He usually stops whatever he's working on when you fall asleep, realizing he should probably call it a night.
This man is touched starved! He loves cuddles! He loves cuddling with you after a long day in the factory. His hair is a weak spot. He loves when it's played with. He's too busy to ever cut it, and he likes it long. Once and a while he'll trim it, a long with cleaning up his beard. He loves when you cup his cheeks in your hands and mess with his beard.
Give this man a beard oil kit and he'll actually take care of his appearance. It's a good gift for him.
He was reluctant to let you braid it but caved in. Now he always lets you play with it whenever. He also loves it being pulled on. Another reason he likes it long.
This man is extremely kinky. He's basically into whatever and will always agree to try whatever you suggest. However he will always respect your boundaries if you don't like something. He might push a little, ask 'are you sure?' but he'll ultimately drop the idea. You can bring it back up again when you feel comfortable though. He's into bdsm. He really likes tying you up. More specifically, using whatever metal is around to bind your wrists.
He makes sex toys. A lot of sex toys. Sometimes it gets boring in the factory and it wasn't like he was ever seeing anyone. His toys are... uh... rather intense. He can handle it being rough.
He's created whole ass machines just for sex. I told you this man is freaky. He can pound that shit for hours. His powers let him go on for a while... That couch along fleshlight he altered has been through a lot...
If he makes a toy for you, he'll cator it to something you like. It's never as rough as his personal toys. He'll make you something like a vibrator that can run for days without dying, and has many more settings than the average one.
He'll steal Alcina's fancy ass candles for wax play. She'll be walking around in her castle and notice one of her candles are missing. She doesn't actually know the real reason Karl steals them. She thinks he's just making her life difficult.
Another way he makes her life difficult is by moving shit, walking through her caste with his muddy boots, eyeing up her maids, and just lingering around until she yells at her.
He definitely likes pulling pranks.
He likes video games. He loves Mortal Kombat. He likes beating the Dimitrescu sisters asses. They get so pissy. But it's nice bonding time with their uncle. It's one of the few times he'll agree to hang out with them. He's memorized all the moves and combos so there's no beating him. Aaron Black is his favourite.
He'll also play Stardew Valley with you even though he hates it. He does the caves for you so you don't die. His little character looks just like him. He doesn't get why you play this game when you can just go in the village and actually farm.
He loves motorcycles! He made a whole custom one from scratch! He's been to a couple queer biker bars a few times.
He looks like a hobo, so people assume he's homeless and give him a few dollars. Especially when he goes to Walmart. The first time he had to ask you why a lady gave him dollar. He was offended when told him 'She probably thought you were homeless' but he couldn't really argue...
He likes metal music. No pun intended. He's even got a couple spiked bracelets. He thinks metal music is nice to work to in his factory. Rob Zombie is his favourite. My Papá agrees with this one!
He'll also listen to Old Mans Poison. Specifically their song "Feed the Machine". I love that song so much and it suits Heisenberg. He'll also listen to German heavy metal.
Any alt people and metalheads need to be careful around him, because if you're wearing a lot of metal, and he activates his powers, you'll be dragged across the room. He usually doesn't mean it but sometimes he'll use that against you just to tease you. If you're wearing any necklaces in general, be careful around him because he will accidentally choke you and won't feel any remorse about it. He'll actually laugh.
He'll attach metal to non-metal objects so he can make them float around. He can control blood. It contains iron in it. I think that's how he's so successful with his soldat.
If someone pissed him off, he'll just kill them with a blood clot. :)
But he also uses that power to patch up Ethan.
He has a lot of self harm scars on his arms. The other scars however, are from messing around in his factory and being tested on. He has depression but, will always deny it but, deep down he knows he has it.
He loves steampunk fashion. Most of the necklaces and gifts he makes are steampunk. He loves any steampunk accessories you get him.
There's nothing that suggests how old Heisenberg was when he was experimented on by Miranda. He did come along after Alcina, who was forty-four when she was experienced on. I think he was around ten when he was taken, making his resentment towards Miranda much, much deeper. This is also based off some fanart of him as a kid which I thought was cute.
His one necklace is a little scale. I totally see him just wearing it to fidget with it. Either tugging on it when it's around his neck or using his powers on it. Same thing with the compass. Using his powers to make the needle spin around.
He's neurodivergent in some way.
He'll start like a hundred different projects but never actually finish them. He'll also get hyper fixated on one project and only do that for days on end or do a bunch of projects based off one topic.
Despite never being hugged, Karl gives the best hugs. Sure he's very stiff and has no idea what to do when it comes to comforting people. You'll have to initiate the hug. It'll take him a moment to actually wrap his arms around you and it'll take a few hugs before he feels comfortable hugging you back.
His touch starts off stiff and awkward before gradually relaxing and he'll wrap you up in his trenchcoat so you feel secure.
Honestly I headcannon that with any character that wears a trenchcoat. I actually have a trenchcoat and it's literally perfect to wrap someone up in a hug with it.
Any relationship, whether it's platonic or romantic needs to go slow for him. Lots of baby steps! Why do I like baby steps with characters so much....
Once someone is close with him, he may let them use his first name.
He will talk your ear off about his inventions. Even if you don't understand, he just needs to get it out. But! He will absolutely love it if you ask questions. And if you're very interested he'll simplify everything down for you so you understand.
He'll have you help him on his inventions that don't pose any threats. He's not gonna risk hurting you so he'll just have you hand him tools and such. It's nice having an extra pair of hands around. He'll explain how the invention works. Ask him questions! He likes that. He's never had anyone to talk about his work with.
He likes when you lightly trace over his scars. Like if you're holding his face in your hands and lightly trace over them with your thumbs. Or when you two are cuddling and you trace over the scars on his chest and abdomen.
꩜…꩜…꩜…꩜…꩜…꩜…꩜…꩜…꩜…꩜…꩜…꩜…꩜…꩜…
Oki... I think I'm done for now. I can't think of any more. I know I have more though so I might make another one of these.
Now to the part I hate

<< Chapters 1-5 Chapters 6-10
Chapter 6
The brewery was an unassuming stucco building a few blocks from the university. One of Lear’s murals covered the east wall—a massive, dynamic figure carved with intricate geometric textures. An article once described his work as Klimpt meets Basquiat, but Lear’s murals were mathier—frenetic, for sure, but playing more with geometry and dimension. He used clay and wood to give the paint and figures a kinetic, blocky depth, painted gold and carved with reticulated patterns. Even amidst Valpo’s cacophony of street art, it stood out.
I checked my phone. 2:04 PM. Lear’s been to jail, I thought. I could ask him what it’s like. If the gang does have something nefarious planned, I could just offer to turn myself in. I’d get swept off to the US federal prison system, and they’d never see or hear from me again, as good as dead. After a few more shaky breaths, I marched my badass black boots through the graffitied steel door.
The brewery proper was a maze of stainless steel metal vessels, lined up like redwoods on either side of the cavernous back room. It was like walking into a grand estate, or a prison. Squat windows near the ceiling drained light in, casting the brewery in sleepy, afternoon blue. Every step echoed. I was almost at the opposite end of the building when Lear popped out from behind a brew kettle. I nearly shot out of my shoes.
Lear looked like an arrow—rail-thin, sharp features, long gray hair puffing out from under his beanie. The wrinkles of his drawn face pointed up towards his high forehead, so he always looked like he was pitying you. “Whoa, whoa!” He checked his watch, then spread his balsa-wood arms, snapping his fingers like jabs. “Don’t be so jumpy-y-y.”
There was a dark spot under his linen shirt where he kept his gun. A deep breath balmed my frazzled nerves. “H-hey, Lear. The crew around?”
“Might be. You got your computer?”
I hugged my laptop bag and nodded.
“Cool. Let’s jam.” Lear swaggered into the shadow between the back 2 brew kettles, checking his wrist and whistling Ennio Morricone.
I didn’t follow. “Lear, p-please tell me what this is about.”
Lear’s tight shoulders slumped. He pursed his heart-shaped lips. “Come on, now, don’t make this hard on me.” His voice was flat. Panic reached up from my stomach and choked me. I backed up, but bumped something solid and warm. I spun, twitchy as prey. Cat raised her wooly-bear-caterpillar eyebrows at me.
Cat was the muscle in the crew, a big woman with a strong jaw, long silky hair, and a manslaughter rap Lear helped her out of. Her grease-stained tank top showed off meaty arms holding a tall baking dish with a lid on it. “Hey, Dom.”
“You’re late!” Lear scolded, jutting his knobby chin out at her. “Jig’s up, I guess.” Throwing an arm around my shoulders, Lear pulled me with him around the corner towards a black shadow between cylinders. My heart hammered my ribs. The dark alcove in front of me, Cat behind me blocking the exit. There was nowhere to go.
“Lear, please, just wait. You don’t have to do this.”
“Oh, I think I do.” Lear clapped his hands once, the sound shuddering against the stainless-steel kettles.
“No, really, I promise, I’ll leave and you’ll never-”
Overhead fluorescents blinked to life over the picnic table we used to look over blueprints, count money, and eat greasy takeout. It was Jackson-Pollucked with every color of sticky acrylic paint. Unfamiliar paper cones were stacked on it. Inscrutable chalk-scrawls covered an ancient, wheeled blackboard situated beside an equally antique television, also on wheels. Paper streamers hung haphazardly off pipes and valves. A few feet back, U.H. stood beside the fuse box in skinny jeans and a pornhub hoodie, their phone in one hand. “Um. Surprise?”
Behind me, Lear crackled out a raucous chorus of cumpleaños feliz. I twisted around in time to see him elbow Cat, who grudgingly joined in. U.H. pointed their fingers at me as they ran up, hooked an arm around my neck, shouting the song in my face.
“Wh-what?”
“Well, you wouldn’t tell us when your birthday is, so I thought we’d pick one for you,” Lear said. “September 18th. One hell of a surprise party, right?” One hell of a surprise party was right. September 18th wasn’t my birthday of course, it was… January, definitely January. The 27th, maybe? The 23rd? “Look at her face, Cat! Told you she’d never see it coming.”
“Yeah, Boss, you made up a birthday for her,” Cat said flatly, bumping past Lear to set her ice-white dish down on the picnic table.
“Why did you tell me to bring my computer if you were just throwing a party?”
“You’re so paranoid, I had to pretend it was for work. Plus, I want to talk over your idea.”
“It’s not an idea, Lear, I’m just curious.”
Cat lifted the lid of her baking dish. The cake was a puffy cloud of chantilly cream drizzled with caramel. A rum-colored puddle covered the bottom of the plate. U.H. sat down across from us, smoking weed from an electric-green vape pen.
U.H. was an adrenaline-junky from a young age. By the time their rich parents gave up on them, the teenager had accrued 10 charges for driving without a license, 8 for reckless endangerment, 13 for destruction of property, 6 for grand theft auto, 24 for drug possession, and 1 for public nudity. U.H. was a gearhead with an obscene knowledge of cars and no slouch when it came to gadgets either. They once escaped from a Hyundai they crashed by fashioning a high-powered laser cutter out of the CD player, but beyond working Tinder, they weren’t very good with the software side.
Cat slid a slice of cake my way. The yellow sponge glistened with rum, bifurcated by a layer of icing and dulce de leche in the center. U.H. promptly reached across the table, dragging the plate towards them with a single finger. Cat flicked them behind the ear. “That’s for Dom, you gremlin.” U.H. flinched but took a bite anyway.
Lear passed us 4 unlabeled beer bottles, each one foaming at the mouth. “You tell her about the bike?”
“Oh yeah,” U.H. said, hopping to their feet as they licked their plastic fork clean. “Cat ’n me stole you a bike. It’s out back, wanna see?”
Still gobsmacked by my fake birthday party, I followed Cat and U.H. in a daze, unable to process this new piece of information. We took 2 lefts through brew kettles and mash tuns to the loading bay doors that led to the brewery’s gravel back lot. Cat slid the garage-style door up.
When U.H. said they stole me a bike, I assumed they meant something with a basket and some tassels. I didn’t expect the sleek-black paint job, angry headlamps and chunky engine. I should have—Cat and U.H. didn’t run a chop-shop for bicycles, after all.
“I know the 400 is baby’s first bike, but I didn’t know how much experience you had with motorcycles,” U.H. said (none was how much experience I had with motorcycles). “They had this moronic turbo setup—because, y’know, let’s strap a rocket to a tricycle—but I fixed it for you. We figured you don’t come out much because you must live real far away, right?”
It was less than 2 miles, but I didn’t have the heart to tell them that. I couldn’t explain why it wasn’t safe to be around me; that if I get caught, the crew will too. Besides, trying to drive a motorcycle through the roller-coaster hills of Valpo sounded like the definition of a death wish.
“Anyway,” U.H. went on as we walked back inside, “buy a helmet, not a shitty one, spend half a mil at least, otherwise your head’ll be-” U.H. made a wet noise as they scraped the palm of their hand across their skull. “Can’t let you die until we kill your new job.”
“It’s not a job,” I said as we walked back to Lear at the table. “Is that really why you called me down here?”
“Nah, nah nah,” Lear protested. “It’s about the party, a rowdy row wrapped in ribbons. Job’s just the bow on top. After what you said about the campaign I confabbed with a few folks around town who might be in the know. You weren’t kidding about this law and order angle.”
“The kids are out of control!” U.H. mocked. “They’re delinquents, they’re violent, they stole my 1984 Pontiac Firebird and crashed it into a Starbucks!”
“So, I took your advice and sent Cat and U.H. in. Told ’em to push the mayhem angle.”
“Yeah. I threw a brick through a window,” U.H. bragged.
“That was you?”
“Oh yeah. Didn’t even get yelled at. I might quit boosting cars and just do this now.”
“You got in no trouble at all?”
“No,” Cat said. “They said to keep up the good work.”
“My god… He’s really doing it, he’s paying people to be violent to validate his message.”
“And when U.H. is already validating his message so well already,” Lear japed.
“Fuck yeah I am!”
Chile had seen fascism. The right-wing dictator installed by the CIA in the ‘70s “disappeared” thousands of Chilean citizens for protesting his “presidency.” If Godoy played dirty like this, he could go full Pinochet once elected. What would happen to Valparaíso, Chile’s bastion of bohemian revolt? “You’ve sent all this to Teresa, right?”
“Nope,” Lear said, checking his watch. “In fact, it’s imperative she doesn’t find out.”
“Lear, there’s no score.”
“Oh, but there is,” he said, walking to the ancient TV. “See, I did send Teresa one tidbit from the whisper mill. It was just a rumor to me, but she did her multiple sources thing. She said it’d break at 2:30.” Lear switched the TV on.
There was Teresa’s scolding gaze and severe haircut. She leaned over a glass desk, oversized and gleaming with studio lights. A picture-in-picture of the Ek building was up on the screen beside her. “In an unexpected move,” Teresa told the camera, “presidential candidate and television personality Adalberto Godoy is holding his campaign fundraiser in the city of Valparaíso instead of Chile’s capital, Santiago. Ek Inc., the tech company best known for its Ekko mobile phones, plans to host Godoy’s gala in its newly-constructed and controversial office building in Valparaíso’s historic district. Godoy’s pro-business agenda is expected to attract corporate donors from across the globe who use Chilean copper and lithium in a broad range of electronics. Sources close to the campaign report they expect up to $20 billion pesos in donations the night of the gala.”
Lear whistled, muting the TV. “I’ve been to plenty of charity blowouts. Small donations go into envelopes on the tables, but the big stuff gets entered into a tablet.”
My job. $20 billion Chilean pesos—about $20 million USD—donated through a piece of technology. “You want to rob the fundraiser,” I realized aloud.
Lear grinned, all graveyard teeth. “No, you want to rob the fundraiser. This was your call, D-zero, and you called it. It’s only right that you manage it.”
“Me? I-I just wanted to see what Godoy was up to.”
Lear lowered his voice as U.H. chatted to Cat. “Exactly. You’re in it for the right reasons, D-zero, just like I am. The money isn’t what you’re after, that’s just icing.” Lear dipped a knobby finger into his slice of cake, popping the wad of chantilly cream in his mouth. “We want to even the odds. We want these bastards out of Valpo. What do you say?”
What a stupid, sloppy idea, I thought. The last time I went up against Ek directly, he ended up acquitted and I ended up here. I’d be risking detection, capture, federal prison, or worse: another 4000 white-knuckle miles of static. Yet, how could I sit back and watch Ek and Godoy take over Valparaíso, the town that had sheltered me for 4 terrified years? How many more times would I let Julian run me from my own home? Lear, as off-kilter as he was, took care of me when I arrived in Valpo in a broken down car, delicate as an exposed wire. Paula too, who gave me a dark and quiet place where I felt safe. I loved Valparaíso, with its crooked streets you couldn’t help but get lost in; never be found in. I felt safe cradled between the mountains and the sea, holding me in cupped hands with paint-stained fingers.
He can’t just get away with it. Not this time; not your thumb; not this scale. If the law can’t stop Julian Ek, I’ll black his eye for them. “I’ll do it. I’m in.”
“Good,” Lear said. “I’ll take care of staffing, you just figure logistics. U.H. and Cat will keep looking for limits on hell-raising. I’ll drag for contractors.”
“We should get someone in the campaign staff.”
“See? You’re bossing me around already.” Lear’s smile went soft around the edges. “You’re a peach, Ms. Mysterio. Sorry to do this on your birthday.”
“It’s OK. It’s not my birthday.”
“Oh, you about to tell me when it really is?”
“No.”
“Then far as I’m concerned, it’s September 18th, baby.”
“Don’t call me ’baby’,” I said, rolling my eyes while trying to decide between 1/23 or 1/27. Lear set an occupied brown paper bag on the table. Whatever was inside was the mass, volume, and density of a textbook. “What’s this?”
“What’d I just say? Sept-tem-ber 18th, baby.” Lear tapped the bag with each syllable.
“And what did I just say?” Reaching inside, my fingers found something solid and poly-smooth. It was heavy, and I needed both hands to pull it up and out of the bag. The sturdy frame had hinges drilled into one side, attaching a small, squat door. A dollar-store lock held the door shut, covering whatever painting the frame was framing. With a bit of digging I fished the small, notched key from the bottom of the bag. The lock clicked open with spring-loaded satisfaction. I unhooked it from the latch, then opened the door like a book.
It was me. Bands of butter yellow and daubs of ultraviolet chiseled me out from the black canvas. Gold geometric patterns marched along the seams of my jacket and zigzagged through my textured hair. It still smelled like turpentine. In the painting, I was laughing, my sunglasses in my hand and my eyes wet with molten gold. Looking at it was uncomfortable. The girl in that painting wasn’t a big, bad cyber-revolutionary. She was small and jagged, laughing through her tears. That girl couldn’t do what I’m about to. That girl was an open wound. “It’s beautiful, Lear,” I said, and meant it. “How is it meant to be displayed? With the door open or closed?”
“Suppose that’s up to you, D-zero.” Lear smiled, but barely. “That’s not my name, y’know.” He tapped 4 sweeping, capital letters in the bottom-right corner. L-E-A-R. “It’s Reyes. But you knew that already, right?”
Yes. You were arrested by Pinochet’s military police after one too many avant-garde acts of vandalism. After that, the Universidad de Chile’s art program revoked your admission.
“Why do you think they call me that?”
“Seems obvious. You’re the king, and…”
“And?”
“And you’re a little crazy.”
Lear nearly fell off his seat, howling with laughter. “Nah, that ain’t why. It’s because I let little girls like you push me around.”
You treated jail like the university you couldn’t go to. You learned; networked, and not just with the other political prisoners. You graduated from avant-garde to direct action. “I’m not a princess,” I said.
“Don’t I know it. So? I showed you mine, you show me yours.”
You have a real daughter in Santiago that refuses to see you. I know what kind of soap you use, what kind of porn you watch, what kind of emails you write but never send. I know everything about you, and you don’t even know my name. “I think it’s better if you call me Domino,” I said as I shut the door on the painting, “and I call you Lear.”
“4 years and you still don’t trust me.” With a heavy sigh, Lear stood up from the table. “Guess that makes you a good criminal.”
I couldn’t process any kind of answer to that. Had 4 years turned me into a criminal, or did my chemical makeup fundamentally change the moment I opened that video? It seemed like a lifetime since I’d gone on the run, that 2-month road-trip panic-attack, screaming south until no one knew my name.
A strange revelation hit me then—a bug in my code. What was my real name again? I hadn’t used it since I left, and the news only referred to me as “Former Ek Inc. Employee.” It was on the tip of my tongue. My brows pressed together, as though the information could be folded back into my brain. My thumb was running down the stained wood of the painting’s closed door when the syllables floated up from a dusty corner of my mind, like a piece of trivia.
Lia. My name is Lia.

What Is an Electrical Outlet Box—and Why It Matters
We plug into power dozens of times a day—charging phones, turning on lights, and powering tools. But behind every safe and reliable connection is one often-overlooked component: the electrical outlet box.
This small but essential enclosure is the starting point for a secure electrical system, whether you're wiring a home or outfitting an industrial facility. Let’s break down what an electrical outlet box does, why it’s important, and how to choose the right one for your next project.
What Does an Electrical Outlet Box Do?
An electrical outlet box—sometimes called a junction box or receptacle box—houses and protects electrical wiring, switches, outlets, and other devices. These boxes keep live wires contained, reducing the risk of fire, shock, or physical damage to the connections inside.
In residential and industrial settings alike, outlet boxes serve as:
· Secure housing for electrical connections
· Fire containment in case of arcing or faults
· Mounting platforms for outlets, switches, and fixtures
· Barriers against dust, debris, and moisture (especially in outdoor or industrial uses)

Residential Use: Keeping Homes Safe and Code-Compliant
In residential construction and remodeling, selecting the right electrical outlet box ensures your home is both safe and up to code. Outlet boxes are installed in wall cavities and ceilings to support everyday electrical needs—from powering kitchen appliances to integrating GFCI outlets in bathrooms.
Here are key factors for residential use:
· Non-metallic outlet boxes are common for ease of installation and cost-efficiency.
· Boxes must accommodate modern safety devices like AFCI and GFCI outlets.
· Moisture-resistant and weatherproof models are essential in bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor areas.
Allied Moulded’s residential outlet boxes are designed to make installation simple while meeting NEC standards for safety and performance.
Industrial Use: Durability in Demanding Environments
When it comes to factories, warehouses, and commercial facilities, the demands placed on an electrical outlet box are much higher. Boxes must withstand harsh conditions—like high heat, corrosive chemicals, or physical impact—without compromising safety.
For these environments, Allied Moulded manufactures industrial-grade outlet boxes made from fiberglass-reinforced thermoset polyester, which offers:
· High dielectric strength
· Resistance to corrosion and UV degradation
· UL and NEMA ratings for various hazardous and wet locations
· Long service life in rugged conditions
These industrial outlet boxes often form part of a broader enclosure system, ensuring code compliance with NEC and worker safety guidelines such as NFPA 70E.
Choosing the Right Electrical Outlet Box
Whether you’re a homeowner, contractor, or plant manager, selecting the right outlet box begins with understanding your environment and application.
Why Allied Moulded?
For over 60 years, Allied Moulded has been a trusted name in non-metallic electrical boxes and enclosures. Whether it’s a lightweight wall box for a smart home or a rugged industrial outlet box for a manufacturing plant, we engineer products that exceed safety and durability standards.
With corrosion resistance, superior dielectric strength, and easy-to-install designs, our electrical outlet boxes deliver both peace of mind and long-term performance.
Final Thoughts
Behind every outlet or switch, the electrical outlet box is quietly doing its job—protecting circuits, securing devices, and keeping users safe. Whether you’re working on a new home build or upgrading a production facility, choosing the right outlet box is a smart and necessary step.
Explore Allied Moulded’s lineup of residential and industrial electrical outlet boxes—engineered for performance, built to last.

Market Overview
The US, Canada, and Mexico are among the major economies in North America. This region accounts for a significant share of the biometric technologies market. Surging data theft identity fraud incidences, and terrorist operations, among other security breaches, are driving the biometric technologies market in North America. In October 2023, the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs faced a cyberattack from Vietnamese hackers trying to install spyware on the phones of journalists. This propels the demand and adoption of biometrics technologies to handle unlawful practices and enhances national security. Biometric authentication in phones unlocks greater security due to its resistance to most common cyberattacks such as password cracking or phishing. Biometric technologies offer an efficient way to keep physical attacks and cyber-attacks in check by delivering more stringent security measures to users. The market in North America is anticipated to expand at a significant rate during the forecast period owing to the surging demand for biometrics solutions from the IT sector and the rising number of phishing attacks.

Increasing Use of Biometric Systems at Airports Fuels North America Biometric Technologies Market
Airports around the world are actively exploring and implementing biometric solutions at various touchpoints, including check-in kiosks, security checkpoints, and boarding gates, which results into a continuous demand for new hardware and software systems. As airport administrations experience success with initial implementations, they are likely to expand the application of biometrics to other areas at airports, creating additional demand for technology and integrations. Moreover, facial recognition is becoming common in airport operations. For instance, in February 2024, passenger screening using facial recognition software was made available to select travelers at La Guardia by Delta Air Lines and the Transportation Security Administration. This explains how biometric technology, which uses an individual's unique physical identifiers such as face or fingerprints, promises to transform airline operations and traveling experience. Therefore, the increasing use of biometric technology in airports presents a significant biometric technology market trend.\

There’s an anime this season about this, called “16-bit Sensation: Another Layer,” where a novice game artist bangs her head in a donut shop in Akihabara and wakes up in 1992.

She wanders ver to a small company making video games, and begs to work for them because it’s new years, it’s cold, she’s got nothing to her name, the NFC thing on her phone that lets her use the train doesn’t work here, and the batteries on it and her tablet just died. One of the workers looks at her tablet and says, “Is that a PDA?” And another replies, “Nah, it’s way too big.”
She’s got to figure out how to scan line art off paper, transfer it to her NEC PC-9801 via 5.25” floppy, and color it on a machine with 16-color graphics (“actually 15; the system reserves one color” says a coworker) and a mouse, dithering by hand, when all her experience is creating art directly on a Cintiq clone. She almost breaks down crying when she learns there’s no Undo command.
I’m watching this knowing this is set when I just graduated high school, the Intel 486DX2 was the best thing, and 66 MHz CPUs were blazing fast. Babylon 5’s team were just starting to work out how to do their special effects on Amigas with Video Toasters. And all that was incredible technology compared to when I was growing up in the 70s, with the 8-bit Atari 2600 and Channel 3/4 Selector Boxes and 300 ohm antenna screw terminals on TVs for the UHF antennas.
We’ve reinvented reality so many times already. Are we sure it’s better, though?
we were the liminal kids. alive before the internet, just long enough we remember when things really were different.
when i work in preschools, the hand signal kids make for phone is a flat palm, their fingers like brackets. i still make the pinky-and-thumb octave stretch when i "pick up" to respond to them.
the symbol to save a file is a floppy disc. the other day while cleaning out my parents' house, i found a collection of over a hundred CDs, my mom's handwriting on each of them. first day of kindergarten. playlist for beach trip '94. i don't have a device that can play any of these anymore - none of my electronics are compatible. there are pieces of my childhood buried under these, and i cannot access them. but they do exist, which feels special.
my siblings and i recently spent hours digitizing our family's photos as a present for my mom's birthday. there's a year where the pictures just. stop. cameras on phones got to be too good. it didn't make sense to keep getting them developed. and there are a quite a few years that are lost to us. when we were younger, mementos were lost to floods. and again, while i was in middle school, google drive wasn't "a thing". somewhere out there, there are lost memories on dead laptops. which is to say - i lost it to the flood twice, kind of.
when i teach undergrad, i always feel kind of slapped-in-the-face. they're over 18, and they don't remember a classroom without laptops. i remember when my school put in the first smartboard, and how it was a huge privilege. i used the word walkman once, and had to explain myself. we are only separated by a decade. it feels like we are separated by so much more than that.
and something about ... being half-in half-out of the world after. it marks you. i don't know why. but "real adults" see us as lost children, even though many of us are old enough to have a mortgage. my little sister grew up with more access to the internet than i did - and she's only got 4 years of difference. i know how to write cursive, and i actually think it's good practice for kids to learn too - it helps their motor development. but i also know they have to be able to touch-type way faster than was ever required from me.
in between, i guess. i still like to hand-write most things, even though typing is way faster and more accessible for me. i still wear a pj shirt from when i was like 18. i don't really understand how to operate my parents' smart tv. the other day when i got seriously injured, i used hey siri to call my brother. but if you asked me - honestly, i prefer calling to texting. a life in anachronisms. in being a little out-of-phase. never quite in synchronicity.

¶ … Pulse of Electronic Medical Records Taking the Pulse Dr. Cara is treating a patient for congestive heart failure in the hospital emergency room. The elderly female patient has made multiple trips to the ER the last four months after suffering chest pains, palpitations and other health scares. Before ending her 12-hour shift, Dr. Cara writes instructions on the patient's medical chart. Under the column that reads "medications," she writes "now nec,," an abbreviation for "now necessary." An hour later, the next attending ER physician reviews the chart -- and then, struggling for clarity, reads it several times again. Is that a "w" or a "t"? Is that word "now" or "not"? He cannot reach Dr. Cara by phone, but sees that she has been consulting with the patient's cardiologist. Assuming from this piece of information that the patient has been prescribed medication from the cardiologist, the physician reads Dr. Cara's note as "not nec.," or "not necessary." His interpretation is as wrong as it can be. Quality health care has been defined as "doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to the right person and having the best possible results" (Agency for Healthcare Research Quality, 2004). But this patient, and perhaps thousands like her across the United States every day, receive less than quality health care. In fact, errors like this one can, and have, cost patients their lives. "Quality health care" can be measured by many yardsticks -- error reduction and patient safety among them. And it's long been assumed that these two crucial measures would be improved through the use of electronic medical records, or EMRs. Taking the Pulse 3 But that's not exactly what A.S. Kazley and Y.A. Ozcan (2008) found in their study of hospitals' use of electronic medical records. The study Kazley's and Ozcan's study attempted to determine if EMRs are associated with higher quality care in treating three certain clinical conditions: acute myocardial infarcation, congestive heart failure and pneumonia. Their research questions were: Do hospitals with EMRs provide higher quality care? And in which conditions can EMRs affect quality? The sample in the study included 4,605 nonfederal, acute care hospitals in the United States. Of these hospitals, 479 used fully automated EMR systems. However, the authors said they included "only" 2,969 hospitals in the quality analysis because of limitations in the reporting and validity of the quality measures." Of the 2,969 hospitals, 348 used EMRs in 2004. In the end, they found little support for their hypothesis that hospitals with EMRs provide higher quality care in all areas. In fact, they found that higher quality care associated with EMR use in hospitals tends to be "sporadic." "We find no consistent evidence that EMR use can increase care in any particular condition over another," they write. Discussion Even the authors express surprise at their findings, and it's easy to understand why. When viewed against the current backdrop of expectations consumers are placing on the medical field, no expectation appears unjustified or unreasonable. Taking the Pulse 4 As Kovnar and Knickman (2011) point out, consumers may understand that safe, quality health care is not "automatic," but they still have high expectations of their physicians -- once they find one, that is. With the ability to scan Web sites, read physician profiles and study symptoms and even possible remedies before they walk into a physician's office, today's "educated" consumers may demand more of their treatment regimen and feel less tolerance for physicians' mistakes and missteps. As the authors suggest, something is "wrong" with a medical system that leaves patients wondering about the status of a blood test when, alternatively, they can track the precise movement of a FedEx package across the country, each city along the way and at any time of the day or night. But high hopes remain for EMRs, too. As Miller and Simm (2004) point out, EMRs are "predicted to make the processes of health care more standardized and automated through the presence of screen prompters, mandatory patient information fields to be entered and tools to catch prescription interactions or inappropriate diagnoses. These improved automated processes are expected to lead to fewer medical errors and oversights, thus improving health care quality outcomes." Kazley and Ozcan rightly point out that EMRs could improve many of the flaws of paper medical records. After all, they are transportable, transferable, complete, automated, standardized and typed, as well as connected to standardized clinical pathways and other tools, which could reduce the number of medical errors while increasing communication and coordination between physicians (Fonkych & Taylor, Taking the Pulse 5 2005). Because of these characteristics, EMRs have been predicted to increase the quality of health care services (Miller & Sim, 2004). While no true researcher formulates a hypothesis and then contorts a research study's findings to support it, there is clearly a need for more research with regard to EMRs improving the quality of patient care. With nearly 900,000 physicians and DOs in the United States today, there is plenty of fodder, especially with regard to EMRs in use in private practices and ambulatory/surgical centers. And rather than drawing distinctions between medical conditions -- as Kazley and Ozcan did in their study -- future researchers might do well to study the difference that EMRs make between disciplines -- for example, in the offices of podiatrists and obstetricians. A comparative analysis might also be productive, in which a patient's paper records are checked for accuracy against an EMR. Clearly, the opportunity for future research on the subject is abundant. But first, no physician or researcher is likely to argue with Kazley and Ozcan's premise that best practices in health information technology must first be indentified and used as benchmarks. And no physician, researcher and especially patient is likely to argue with what Kovnar and Knickman refer to as an improved "clinical quality of care," or shorter hospital stays, fewer physician visits, faster recovery times and fewer complications stemming from errors like the one Dr. Cara -- and probably thousands of physicians just like her -- may make every day. What You Need to Know About Installing Electrical Outlets in Kitchens
When it comes to installing electrical outlets in kitchens, it’s not just about plugging in a blender or charging your phone. Kitchens are busy spaces where appliances and devices need reliable access to power. The right outlet placement and type can make all the difference in functionality and safety. If you're planning a kitchen renovation or just upgrading the electrical system, here's what you need to know about installing electrical outlets in your kitchen.
Understanding the Importance of Proper Outlet Placement
One of the first things to consider when installing outlets in the kitchen is their placement. Ideally, outlets should be installed above the countertops for easy access to small appliances. The National Electrical Code (NEC) requires that outlets be spaced no more than 4 feet apart along the countertop. This ensures that you won’t have to stretch a cord across the kitchen to use a toaster, microwave, or coffee maker.
In addition to countertop outlets, you may need outlets for specific areas like under-cabinet lighting, built-in appliances (like a dishwasher or refrigerator), and around the kitchen island. Think about the layout of your kitchen and where you’ll need power to make your cooking experience smooth.
GFCI Outlets for Safety
In any kitchen, safety is a top priority. Since kitchens are spaces where water and electricity can mix, it’s crucial to install Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets. These outlets are designed to protect you from electrical shock by shutting off power if there’s any risk of water coming into contact with the outlet. GFCI outlets are required by code in areas where water might be present, such as near sinks and dishwashers.
If you're updating or replacing outlets, be sure to switch to GFCI outlets in all wet areas of the kitchen. They’re easy to install and provide an added layer of protection for your home.
Power for Large Appliances
In addition to smaller appliances, your kitchen may require outlets that provide more power for larger appliances like ovens, ranges, or refrigerators. These typically require dedicated circuits, which means they’ll need an outlet on their own, separate from other outlets. This is especially important to avoid overloading the circuit, which could lead to tripped breakers or, in the worst case, fire hazards.
When installing outlets for large appliances, always follow the manufacturer’s requirements for the appliance’s power needs. These outlets typically have a higher amperage rating and may require a licensed electrician to ensure they are safely installed.
Design Considerations for Outlets
While safety and functionality are key, design matters too. Electrical outlets and switches can be an eyesore if not integrated into the overall aesthetic of your kitchen. Consider using outlets and switches that match your kitchen’s style—whether that means choosing outlets in a sleek stainless steel finish or ones that blend seamlessly with your cabinetry.
Under-cabinet outlets are another great way to keep the kitchen looking neat. These outlets are hidden from view but still easily accessible for plugging in your appliances when needed. It’s a smart design choice that helps reduce clutter.
Professional Help for Installing Electrical Outlets
Installing electrical outlets in your kitchen isn’t a DIY project for everyone. The placement and wiring need to meet local building codes, and the work should be done with safety in mind. It’s always best to consult with a licensed electrician who can ensure the outlets are installed correctly, up to code, and in the safest manner possible.
