I bound The Rape of Ganymede by @duchessonfire

──────── · · ─ ·𖥸· ─ · · ────────
This was my first miniature bind, born out of the need to have this one shot in print, even though it’s sadly too short for a normal-sized book. I’m really happy with how it turned out though and learned a lot in the process, so I really can’t wait to try this again.
First, I downloaded the fic, formatted it (I even added this little Ganymede painting just for fun), then exported the doc as a pdf and then converted that pdf into individual jpeg images.

I found this template online and calculated where the page numbers needed to be for it to form proper signatures. The font turned out to be far too small so I had to redo all of what I just described. But after all of that I could finally start sewing the signatures together, cutting the text block, sewing the endbands and last but not least, designing the cover.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
──────── · · ─ ·𖥸· ─ · · ────────
I did have to shorten the title, just so it would fit onto the cover. I was also inspired by hawthornandvinebooks. Their rebinds are gorgeous. I really fell in love with Ferrier’s Ganymede, so I half removed the background, printed it on iron-on transfer paper and ironed it onto my book cloth. Adding the htv on top of that can be tricky, as the protective film is sticky and will rip parts of the image off if I’m not careful.

I started writing "4 srs" this month and I like how free and accessible writing is, so I'm recommending free software I've experimented with that might help people who want to get into the hobby!
“Specifically Created for Writing Stories”
-------------------------------
Manuskript – Story organizer / word processor. Has an outliner and index card function, along with distraction free mode. Lets you switch between different templates such as a non-fiction mode or a short story.
Bibisco – Novel writing software that includes writing goals, world-building, distraction free mode, and a timeline.
“I Just Want to Write”
---------------------------
LibreOffice – Microsoft 365 alternative, but free! LibreOffice Writer is what I wrote this tumblr post in before I posted it. Also if you copy & paste the text into the Rich Text Editor on AO3, it seems that it actually converts it properly. Nice! No need for scripts.
Note-Taking
-------------------------------
Zim Wiki - note taking application that is very, very lightweight (1.1mb). It functions with a tree structure, so I’d personally recommend it for world-building and character bios. There are built-in plugins that also turn it into a good software for task management (it even has a article on how to use it for GTD) and journalling. See also: CherryTree (2mb), which is a more outdated-looking app, but functions similarly.
Obsidian MD – The Big Boy. markdown note editor that has been adopted by personal knowledge management fans---if it doesn’t do something you want it to do, just look in the community plugins to see if someone has already done it. Some unique non-word processing related usages I’ve found is the ability to create a table of contents dashboard, a image gallery for images, embedding youtube videos and timestamping notes, so forth.
Logseq – A bullet point based markdown note editor that also has PDF annotations, Zotero integration, flashcard creation, and whiteboards. Best used for outlining projects due to the bullet point structure.
Joplin – A modern app comparable to Zim Wiki, it’s basically just a note-taking software that uses folders and tags to sort easier. Looks prettier than Zim Wiki and Cherry Tree
Notion – An online-only website that allows usage of different database types. Free for personal use. Note: I dislike the AI updates that have been making the app lag more. I prefer the others on this list.
Mind Maps
-------------------------------
Freeplane – So much goddamn features, including a ton of add-ons. Looks somewhat ugly, but it works for anyone willing to spend a while learning how to use it.
Mermaid – Text-based diagram creator. Can be used in apps like Joplin, Notion, and Obsidian.
Obsidian’s Canvas – A core plugin for Obsidian, it deserves its own mention in that it allows you to create embedded notes of the mindmap nodes. Thus, if you want to create a 20-page long note and have it minimized to the size of a penny on the mindmap, you could.
Other Things That Might Be Of Interest
Syncthing - A free software that allows you to sync between two or more computers. Have a desktop but also laze around on a laptop in bed, coming up with ideas?? This is your buddy if you don't want to use a online software.

Exoplanets Around White Dwarfs
Spotting a planet orbiting a white dwarf has not been an easy task, all the traditional methods tend not to work, especially if that planet is a good few AU away from the tiny remnants of a star.
That was until JWST started looking, using it's IR capabilities it's been able to directly image Jupiter sized planets orbiting these dead stars.
Tumblr media
Finding Jupiter sized planets around WD's is a leap in our understanding of what happens to the planets after our Sun becomes a white dwarf, and it seems at least, the outer planets do continue on, although with the reduced mass, they may slowly move outwards in orbit, while throwing a whole lot of debris inwards.
And that may solve a second puzzle, why some white dwarfs seem to have higher % of metals in their atmosphere than others. Planets consumed during the red giant phase (likely Mercury, Venus and Earth in our stars case) will be blown out as the atmosphere is released before the white dwarf, but asteroids and comets may be pushed inwards by Jupiter and Saturn, adding more metals to the now dead stars surface.

Tip for switching from Adobe Illustrator to Affinity Designer and Inkscape
*Before you take off Illustrator, be sure to switch all of your AI files in the following ways because I discovered this and then had to go back on a "trial period" to correct it: 1. Make sure that the canvas size encompasses ALL of the graphics you've created.
I had a graphic that cut off at the edge of the artboard and let me tell you, I was crying at the time lost. An entire week was lost.
So when you save the AI files, make sure it's larger than the area. It will clip to the artboard.
2. Save a visual representation of your images if you've ever made or used brushes. JPG or PNG.
Gradients and patterns will change upon import. If you arranged it in a particular way, it won't always translate 1 to 1 in Inkscape and Affinity Designer. Having a backup of what you intended the image to originally look like will help you fix it if it was critical and you forgot.
3. Save in the following file formats: - PDF - ESP - SVG Online advice is that as long as you check the PDF backup that it will be all good to import into Affinity Designer--not so. A lot of the information was lost and a direct PDF or EPS is often the best for Affinity Designer. Affinity Designer will not preserve your pattern brushes, pattern swatches or your Brushes. It will convert them into vector objects. If you want to preserve your brushes, you need to convert them ALL to being on the canvas and then also make them into PNGs at high resolution.
Inkscape will NOT preserve brushes. ALL of them will be lost, so if you want to preserve brushes and swatches and the like because you're overly detailed as I am... (to your own detriment... TT)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that doesn't even show the insane amount of detail clearly..
Tumblr media
Then you need to put all of the brushes for Inkscape onto the canvas *within the artboard of Illustrator.*
TT There's 9? custom brushes pictured here alone on Anne of Cleves. I made them myself. (Why did I do this to myself?) No one else... no one else did this to themselves. I'm my own sadist and masochist. But can you see any of this in the final work? No.
Anyway, if you're this type, be sure to put it into the canvas, or all of the brushes you made will *disappear* in Inkscape and you'll cry at the lost time.
Why the other file formats if PDF works? Because it's faster loading time. Or stop being a self-masochist.
I hope this will save you the eventual rushing that I had to go through.
Excuse me while I made sure I got all of the files before I turn off Illustrator again.

I just saved an offline copy of that post about how to get your Tumblr reinstated if you've been banned, and I cannot recommend this practice enough. I don't remember to do it nearly as often as I'd like tho.
Currently, since I'm still stuck on mobile, I have arrived at a hilariously convoluted yet quick and easy (after initial set-up) method to save the text of any website without having to think about it too much. It doesn't work as well if there are images included because those can't automatically be saved offline, although they can be embedded and will remain visible as long as the website remains up.
You probably don't care about my convoluted method unless you also use a markdown-based notes app to organise information, so I'll put it under a Read More at the end of the post. HOWEVER.
Other methods I'm thinking about trying out in cases where it's important to also download images:
Save website as PDF. There are browser add-ons that can do this, as well as apps that use your phone's share menu. Problem is, you're stuck with whichever layout it got saved in, whether that's mobile-optimised and impractical to read on desktop or the other way around.
Take screenshots. Again you'll be stuck with one layout, although phone screenshots are usually pretty legible even on desktop.
Save as HTML with images included?? I know how that works on desktop but have never done it on mobile. And then how do you view it?
Anyone got other ideas??
My convoluted method of saving websites in markdown format, unfortunately without images except as direct links to the version that is still online:
Share to Markdownr, which converts it to markdown and provides some options such as including the source URL at the top of the file. Unfortunately, it has no built-in save button tho, which means I'd have to paste the result into a markdown editor myself. Except:
Share to QuickMDCapture, which saves the whole thing instantly in a predetermined folder. In my case, that's my "inbox" folder in the directory where I save all my notes.
At a later date, go through everything I saved like this and sort into more appropriate folders, as well as optionally renaming the files.
I'm sure there are better ways to do this if you're less stubborn, but I'm determined to use markdown because that way my information database will always be portable and moving to a new notes app won't give me a headache. Have you ever tried to export an Evernote database and convert it into a different format because you didn't like Evernote anymore? Nightmare scenario. No more proprietary formats that only the original software can read.
Also, I try to stick to non-PlayStore apps as much as possible. F-Droid and Droid-ify are my best friends. There might be better options on the PlayStore but at what cost. (Do recommend any decent ones you may know of tho; my phone is degoogled but I can install PlayStore apps through Aurora if I must.)
