Here’s an update on grad school, and life, and why in the world I’m here. 
tl;dr: I figured out I wanted to go to grad school late after hating all potential jobs I could get and needing a different degree for the ones I wanted, I’m a teaching assistant while taking 9 hours, and I don’t hate it yet.
(First of all, lemme tell you how stoked I am that I discovered #gradblr, because I was seriously wondering where all the grad students were)
Okay, so some of you may be considering going to graduate school and pursuing some sort of advanced degree. For some of you, you may be considering it because it’s really difficult to get a job in your field without one, some of you just may really love research, and some of you may stick around because you have no idea what to do unless you’re a student. Honestly, none of these are bad reasons to get some sort of advanced degree.
Why
For me, I was in my senior year of college, and it was time to look for a big kid job. I went to my school’s engineering career fair, I got on all sorts of job search websites, I reached out to the university relations guy from my internship the previous summer. What I found was that I wasn’t built to be a design engineering, but that with degrees in Mechanical and Aerospace engineering that was mostly what I was qualified for. There were other options, things like test engineer or quality or certification, but all centered around design engineering.
What I discovered was that the positions I was drawn towards involved things like “processes” or “program management”, or hell, the word “management” in general. What did all of these positions have in common? They needed years of experience, or a degree in Industrial Engineering. 
I had always planned on getting an advanced degree, probably an MBA or something, so what made this so different? Sure, I was going to work for a few years then let whoever I worked for pay for my MBA, but what if I didn’t? What if I changed the plan?
So I looked into it. Where were schools with graduate programs in Industrial Engineering? Oh, Oklahoma State has that? Cool, let me look into it. Oh, they have a track called Engineering Management that focuses on process, program management, and management in general? That sounds familiar, SIGN ME UP.
How
Some time in the middle of November, arguably late to be getting into the graduate application game, I decided to start applying. I ordered my GRE practice book from AMazon on November 19th, I took the GRE (that’s worthy of it’s own post, tbh) on Decemeber 1st, I tracked down some professors to write me some letters of recommendation when the semester started up in January, and I got my application submitted in the last week of January. Due date? February 1st.
What
Currently, I’m a half time TA. This pays for my tuition, and comes with a monthly stipend. This type of funding isn’t super common across graduate programs from what I can tell, but I definitely am lucky that my program offers it. I teach lab for a Visual Basic coding class, and I’m taking 9 hours.
I have one online class, Program Management, which is prompting me to make a post eventually about how to be successful with an online class, because wow I struggled at first. I’m taking a class called Information Systems, which is similar to the version they teach in most MBA programs. The first half is “here are all the types of information systems, so let’s figure out how to pick the right one for your organization” and the second half is “here are new and emerging technologies like Internet of Things and block chain that you’re going to need to know about.” My third class is Probability and Statistics, and it’s way more intense than the Statistics class my friends getting Master’s in Aerospace Engineering have to take. But it’s fine, everything’s fine.
Takeaway
I came to grad school because I wanted to expand my skill set and my resume to edge my way into positions that I know are going to be a fantastic fit for me. Career Fair this year went better than any have in the past because I am a killer combination for the aerospace industry. I already have an Industrial Engineering Internship lined up for the summer, and I’m loving every second of what I’m doing (except for the integrals in statistics, I don’t love integrals in statistics).

Eureka Moments and Paradigm Shifts

A critical enabler essential to change management is the ability to create Eureka Moments. The idea of a Eureka or light bulb moment has been around for a very long time. Psychologists have studied these moments of insight using behavioural methods for nearly a century. We chose to use the term Eureka Moments because the word “Eureka”, means “I have found it”. It is commonly attributed to the ancient Greek scholar, Archimedes. According to legend, he shouted “Eureka” after getting into a bath and realizing that the buoyant force on a submerged object is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by it. Being so elated by his discovery he ran out into the streets shouting, “I have found it” (Eureka in Greek”), and so the Archimedes’ principle was born (Van Hecke, 2010). I believe Change Leaders need to “find” the change they need to lead. A crucial building block to understanding how people, organisations and societies change is contained in the concept of paradigms. A paradigm is defined as a pattern or a problem-solving model. Paradigms are also defined as a set of rules and regulations that set boundaries in which we solve problems. It was first used by Thomas Kuhn in his book, “The Structure of Scientific Revolutions” to explore why scientists often overlook information that does not suit their expectations. Joel Barker popularised the term in business in the 1980s through his video, “Discovering the Future: The Business of Paradigms”. The video had a significant impact on business thinking and is fundamental to the understanding of change. When we change the way we look at something from one way to another, our paradigm shifts and we form new neural networks that replace the old way of looking at something. Even today many people still do not understand the importance of this concept.
For change to occur, it is essential for a paradigm shift to take place. That is when the way of seeing something changes fundamentally to a new way of seeing the same thing. The moment when a paradigm shifts, is called a “Eureka” moment. A “Eureka” moment then refers to a cry of joy or satisfaction when something is discovered. It is a response or a solution to what was perceived as a challenge in the environment. Eureka moments are also called “a-ha” moments (a moment of sudden insight or discovery) or a paradigm shift. An “a-ha” moment takes place when a person, team or society “see” the “world” in a different light or find a solution or realise an opportunity that might not have been there before.
A paradigm shift can also be defined as a sudden comprehension that solves a problem, reinterprets a situation, explains a joke, or resolves an ambiguous percept and is sometimes also called a moment of insight (MOI). There is something magical about experiencing an ‘aha moment’ as well as seeing it in others. The actual split second when an individual reaches a significant new insight or realisation, unlocking the very issue which just seconds before they had viewed as insurmountable. In the blink of an eye, they have moved from a position of being stuck to finding an answer or a way forward.
The illustrations below can be used to illustrate examples of paradigm shifts and to highlight the moment of insight. When we first look at this picture we observe either a black vase or two white faces looking at each other. Depending on our perspective, we might at first only see one of the pictures. In change, the same phenomenon might occur where we miss out information if we believe the way we see something is the only right perspective.

The following image illustrates how two paradigms can exist simultaneously. Some observe black up and down arrows others black exhaust pipes, automatic teller machines, slot machines, half a house. Some might observe the two words fly and win.

One person might see the black arrows, and someone else sees the two words. A debate might even ensue about who is wrong and who is right. But in fact, both parties are right. Each has their own perspective. When we communicate a paradigm shift, we face the exact same challenge. As change leaders, we might want to bring about a change that others might not yet see. Helping the other person understand what it is you see, while they perceive themselves to be correct and you being wrong, is at the heart of the challenge of leading change.
Of course, bringing about a change might be a lot more complicated than seeing different images on a page. Yet, these pictures are powerful analogies to understanding how difficult communication can be and how critical understanding each other’s perspectives are.

It’s been a wild year for land laws such as WOTUS, the ongoing tariff war, marijuana legalization, and more. RLI’s Government Affairs Liaison to the National Association of REALTORS®, Russell Riggs, will update us on the latest on land laws and news as well as what to expect in the coming year.

You’ll have NLC19 — and all its resources and contacts — at your fingertips! This helpful app lets you view the full schedule on your phone and build your own custom schedule based on the sessions you don’t want to miss. It also features an attendee roster from which you can search and add contacts to your phone, rate and review sessions online, view a floor plan to easily navigate your way between sessions, access speaker materials, and even participate in our NLC19 Game Challenge and win a free night at the NLC20 resort!
The app will be available about one month before NLC19 so keep an eye out for emails announcing its availability.
19: Winners Wanted: Raffles!
Our sponsors will be raffling off incredible prizes that will be raffled off to anyone that stopped by their booth in the exhibit hall during the conference. In the past, these have included a Yeti cooler, leather briefcase, iPad, subscriptions to their services, and more!

19 Reasons Not to Miss NLC19
We’re getting ready for the most wonderful time of the year! At the time of publication, National Land Conference is 157 days away, but here at RLI Headquarters, we’re already excited! Last year, we wrote the Top Eleven Reasons to Attend the NLC18. This year, we’re counting up the top nineteen reasons to attend NLC19.
1: It’s RLI’s 75th Anniversary in 2019!
From our humble beginnings at the tail end of World War Two to the Chicago 60 and twelve name changes to eight logos, there’s never been a dull moment for REALTORS® Land Institute. At NLC19, we’ll look back at 75 years of land, how far we’ve come, and our vision for the next 75 years.
2: Early Bird Discounts
The early bird catches the worm. Everyone, from ALCs to non-members can benefit if they register early! ALCs and RLI Members will save $100 for registering before December 1, and non-members will save $125! Be sure not to wait until February to avoid the price increase.

But did you know that you also get discounts on registration?  Standard registration for ALCs is $750, while members pay $800.
