The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. An exhibit of work by women and nonbinary artists was under fire after a website published a story regarding images by artist Sally Mann. The Fort Worth Police invaded the museum and confiscated 4 photos by renown photographer Sally Mann of her children, taken over 30 years ago, and have been displayed in various museums since then without a problem. This is the sort of unwarranted actions taken by the far right, MAGNA, bible wavers with the current President we have in office. Who then turns around and pardons one of the biggest gangsters since Al Capone in Chicago. Censorship is wrong, and small minded censorship is even worse.

One of the wilder beliefs I'm still working on is the belief that the outside world only pretends to have a separate set of a moral values than life inside the cult. Non-fundamentalists allegedly don't believe in such severe corporal punishment, they don't think women and men are separate but complementary, and they don't believe in the Rapture or Salvation. But sometimes I still really feel like if I fuck up badly enough, any outsider is going to 'turn' and reveal that they really do think the way we do in the cult. Chiefly, and I don't know if this is as common as a belief for other ex-fundamentalists, but it's felt so universal for me, the belief that if I break the rules, any authority figure is allowed to hurt me in any way they feel necessary. I temporarily stop being a person when I do something 'bad'. (And of course children, being inherently sinful, aren't fully people to begin with.)

It's made all conflict impossible up until after IOP/PHP. In conversations with roommates, coworkers, and friends, I was so scared of being wrong because it really felt like life or death. In other contexts I thought if I rolled over and let people walk all over me that they'd have a little more mercy when I really did make them angry. It made it basically impossible to be honest with any mental health professionals, too, because some part of me wanted those beliefs to be wrong and I was absolutely terrified they would prove me right, that the 'secular' world is just a less self-aware version of the 'normal' world. On a deeper level I was scared I'd be punished for questioning anything.

Ironically it's really hard for 'secularists' to understand why I'm so weird. This conflict between fundamentalism and anything else feels like a universal struggle, but basically nobody I've met since moving to Chicago knows what the fuck I'm talking about when I talk about speaking in tongues or the end times. I probably seemed like a socially-anxious pathological liar for a couple years. It's taken almost a year of therapy to feel okay saying, "I was raised in a cult," and not completely worry that the person I'm talking to is gonna go mask-off and drag me back into the cult.

McDonald’s to close all CosMc’s — including two in San Antonio

McDonald’s is pulling the plug on its beverage-focused CosMc’s spinoff.

The fast-food giant is shutting down all of the chain’s locations — all but one of which are in Texas — but said it plans to begin offering some CosMc’s drinks at McDonald’s locations in the U.S.

Among the choices on CosMc’s menu: a matcha iced latte, a turmeric spiced latte, a prickly pear-flavored slushy with popping candy on top and a frozen sour cherry energy drink.

McDonald’s debuted CosMc’s in 2023 as a drive-thru- and pickup-only space-themed drink and snack shop it hoped could help it bridge an afternoon slump in sales at its flagship stores. The chain is named after CosMc, an alien character that appeared as part of the McDonald’s brand in the ’80s.

It wound up opening one CosMc’s location near McDonald’s headquarters in Chicago and seven in Texas. Five remain — including two in San Antonio — but the company plans to shut them all down by the end of June. The others are in North Texas.

Stature Reconstruction from Handprint Dimensions in an Adult Nigerian Student Population

Abstract

Background: On regular basis, crimes are committed and the perpetrators of such offences roam the streets unidentified because of insufficient evidence to connect the suspect to the crime. Therefore handprints hold a cardinal role in linking offenders to crimes and its correlation to stature cannot be undermined as it widens the prospect and precision of human identification in medico-legal investigations.

Objective: The objective of the current study is to derive regression models that will predict stature from hand prints parameters amongst Nigerian adults.

Subjects and method: This cross-sectional research comprises of a total sample size of 230(100 males and 130 females) healthy adult Nigerians, aged between 18 to 36 years. This study employed direct and indirect method to acquire handprints dimensions (Handprint Length, Breadth, palm print length and digit length of left and right hand) following standard procedures. The data derived were subjected to series of statistical analysis using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 20 Chicago Inc) including descriptive statistics, independent and paired sample t-test, Pearson moment correlation coefficient and Durbin Watson regression.

Results: The present results for stature records 176.36±8.13cm and 164.38±6.62 for males and females sample respectively. Values of handprints dimension showed a range of positive Pearson moment correlation coefficient (r) of 0.31 to 0.73 which represent weak to strong r value. The regressions formulas derive were observed to be more reliable in multiple linear regression equations when reconstructing stature than single linear equation due to different levels of standard error of estimates (SEE) and coefficient of determination (R2) using>99% accurate estimation rate of the equations.

Conclusion: The regression models derived can effectively reconstruct stature which may be useful to a forensic expert saddled with the task of human identification among disaster victims or crime scene.

Which talks about the facilities, future, etc (Alyssa Thomas is interviewed) and it reminds me of this conversation that nwsl Reddit had once upon a time. Basically the Houston dash and Chicago red stars are still nwsl 1.0 teams whereas KC spirit thorns are nwsl 2.0 (in terms of marketing, crowds, and management)

The part in the interview where the owners said basically we used to be on the high end of facilities but everything has gotten better across the league …. It’s interesting to think about the merc in comparison (granted very different ownership structures) … the way people talk about the merc, they had the crowds before anyone else did and now you have teams with famous draft picks … etc… the difference of course being the merc org (mat etc) have invested (the new practice facility) and the sun don’t have priority at a practice space.

That being said I think the ownership of the sun is really cool and unique and there are opportunities in ct, they just have to invest

New England sports are interesting of course bc they have the strongest fan bases in the world (and honestly the men’s teams are cooler than a lot of other places) like the sports identity is so strong… I didn’t even follow them but I can still name the famous guys from the 4 Boston teams

It’s hard to say that the team wouldn’t benefit from a move to Boston from a management and talent attraction/retention perspective (as alluded to in the article). That being said AT has been there for 10 years and on quick glance, she’s the only one from that draft class who’s stayed where she was drafted (it feels like kinda a bygone era)

The tough thing is that I don’t think the league would put an expansion team in Boston if the sun stay where they are .. and Boston has been lacking in women’s sports for a while (obv pwhl Boston now exists and nwsl Boston is coming back) but New England gets the short end of the stick on so much bc the states aren’t “big” (actually the density of the northeast corridor -dc to boston- gets the region ripped off when it comes to women’s teams. Because despite being dense areas with passionate fans boston and Philly don’t have teams “oh it’s too close to dc and ny” “oh well the whole league can’t be on the east coast we have to give every city in California an expansion team first”

Achalasia is a chronic disease and all current treatments are in the palliative setting, focusing on decreasing the outflow resistance of the esophagogastric junction [1]. This relatively rare disorder is due to primary motor disfunction, characterized by the absence of relaxations of the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) and peristalsis along the esophagus [1]. Up to 50% of patients with achalasia experience heartburn, dysphagia, and weight loss. Regurgitation of food causes hoarseness and pneumonia. The exact etiology of this condition is unknown; however viral, autoimmune triggers, and neurodegenerative diseases are often afflicted to its presentation [2]. The incidence of achalasia varies between 2 to 3/100,000 inhabitants/year and increases with age, regardless of gender or race [3-8]. Sporadic idiopathic achalasia is the most common form and occurs secondary to the destruction of the myenteric plexus that coordinates the contraction and relaxations of LES [9-12]. In patients with achalasia barium esophagram and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy are mainly performed to rule out the presence of cancer and candidiasis. High-Resolution Manometry (HRM) is the gold standard for the diagnosis of esophageal motility disorders. HRM provides functional imaging of the esophagus and after the analysis according to the Chicago classification, a hierarchical categorization of motility disorders is made. This classification is also used for treatment outcome prediction. Some studies have shown that type II achalasia is an initial phase with pan-esophageal pressurization, while type I is a later phase with the complete absence of any contraction. And type III, characterized by premature spastic contractions, may represent a different pathological process [2]. Management of achalasia is aimed at reducing the pressure of the LES by using botulinum toxin injection or myotomy of the LES muscle [13- 16]. Laparoscopic Heller Myotomy (LHM) has been the gold standard therapy [2,17-19]. The technique consists of an 8cm myotomy extending for 2.5cm onto the gastric wall and a Dor fundoplication [2]. Some prefer anterior fundoplication, with limited hiatal dissection, while a partial posterior fundoplication may keep the edges of the myotomy separated, decreasing the probability of recurrent symptoms. Peroral endoscopic myotomy, the method introduced in Japan, is performed by creating a long submucosal tunnel, followed by transection of the circular fibers for about 8cm-6cm on the esophagus and 2cm onto the gastric wall [2].
