The Ultimate Guide to Pixiebob Cats: Everything You Need to Know About This Bobcat-Like Breed
Imagine a cat that looks like it just strolled out of a forest, with a spotted coat, tufted ears, and a short, bobbed tail reminiscent of a North American bobcat. Now picture that same cat curling up on your lap, following you around like a loyal dog, and chirping happily during playtime. That’s the Pixiebob—a domestic breed that blends exotic allure with a heart full of affection. Whether you’re…

I've only just learned what a Genetta cat is via your reblog and I'm. Dumbfounded. Why would you inflict a bengal's temperament in a munchkins body. Terrible decision imo
I know right 😭 you take a highly active, energetic cat and effectively remove its ability to run and climb. It must be hellish for the poor lil guys.

Hi there! I saw your reply to pangur-and-grim about Belphegor, and your statement about cat breeds as coming in three basic shapes was new to me. Triangular and round seem self-explanatory to me, but I was wondering if you had other examples of square breeds?
The most immediately recognizable square breed I can think of off the top of my head is the majestic Maine Coon. Look at that big ole box.
Tumblr media
The Pixiebob, American Shorthair, and American Curl are also pretty solidly square in my eyes. Bear in mind that calling a cat breed's shape round, square, or triangular is a bit like calling a letter/shape Kiki or Bouba - it's vibes more than it is scientific. But there are certainly characteristics common among certain shaped cats that are not common among others. As you said, round cats and triangle cats are pretty self-explanatory - square cats are those breeds that hang out somewhere in between the two.

That pixie bob cat is really cute. Is it true they’re actually half bobcat?
From my understanding, DNA testing has not shown any sign that Pixiebob cats actually have bobcat DNA in them, so it's just a rumor.
Furthermore, I'm pretty sure outcrosses to actual bobcats are not permitted.
They just are bred to look like bobcats!

fun fact, those are called lynx tufts! it's theorized they could possibly function similar to whiskers or somehow enhance hearing, but there hasn't been any real data to confirm this (as far as i know anyway)
they're considered a rare trait but they're more common in certain breeds like Maine Coons. (usually though most domestic cats won't have their tufts as long as a wild lynx does.) according to Catster, they are:
• Maine Coon
• Norwegian Forest Cat
• American Curl
• Highlander
• Pixiebob
• Turkish Van
• Ragdoll
• Siberian
• LaPerm
• Nebelung
as well as lynxes, servals and caracals. :) technically all wild cats but the caracal /can/ be domesticated, usually only acting that way for their domesticator. (so, you can't tame them for humans in general, just you)
Tumblr media
Look at the little tufts of fur at the end of PK’s ears. This is insane. How could this happen…

psst just so u know calico and tortoiseshell cats are almost always female!! it’s very very rare that they’re not, and when they’re male they’re sterile. so if u want maggie and glenn to have hershel still in ur warriors au, he would prob need to be another color ):
also if ur having trouble choosing u could expand ur horizons to purebred cats and even wild hybrids. i dont think its out of the question since the atlanta group are mostly kittypets, esp if they’re half or a quarter (insert breed here). could be cool to make someone (maybe a villain or just someone who’s stronger / bigger / wilder) be like a savannah cat or pixiebob (https://www.thesprucepets.com/hybrid-cat-breeds-4176576) too, domestic mixed with a wild cat.
tentatively suggesting oriental cat for glenn (PLEASE excuse the name in relation to him i feel bad but that’s what they’re called aldkfslf) bc they’re known for being sleek and fast and still come in every color u could want
I know Calicos are pretty much always female, there was a whole activity in my grade 11 biology class. I did temporarily forget that the mutation made them sterile though, cause the calico coloring is tied to a second X chromosome. So he would have to be an XXY male.
Taking your suggestion for a villain: I might make The Governer a pixie-bob. I feel like that fits for him.

Sparrow, I come to you because I have no one else to turn to and research has not given me a definitive answer. Is the allele that causes the short tails in the American Bobtail breed separate from Manx? Are they on the same allele/locus/what have you? If it's a separate gene, is it also homozygous lethal like Manx and/or associated w/ any health concerns? Thank you in advance, I know this is an odd question that might not have a definitive answer!
Located the paper with the answer! Or at least, a partial answer.
Some American Bobtails in this survey were found to have a mutation in the T gene (yes, that's really the full official symbol), and they do share this mutation in common with some Manx! Short tails in Manx are caused by several different mutations on the T gene. However, this mutation didn't account for all of the short-tailed American Bobtails and Pixiebobs in the survey, so other mutations on completely different genes are likely to also be present in those breeds.
These breeds do have less variation in phenotype than the Manx, not having complete taillessness as part of the typical presentation, so this probably means the related health effects are also less common. No homozygotes were found, so I would still assume this particular mutation to be homozygous lethal.

The Pixiebob is typically brown with spotted tabby markings. He is unique among cat breeds in that his breed standard allows for polydactylism, which means he can have more than one toe.

Wild, Wild Pussycats redesigns!!
the pussycats are some of my favorite bnha characters so i decided to redesign their costumes! explanations/list of changes under the cut
got rid of skirts. fighting, running, jumping, etc in skirts isn’t fun or practical, as anyone who’s ever worn one will tell you. pants and shorts are a much more logical choice. (I also added more pockets for extra storage!)
no more crop tops. fun fact: the reason a cat will bite or scratch you if you try to pet its belly is that a cat’s belly is the most vulnerable part of it; the skin is soft and sensitive, and, like humans, most of their internal organs are easily accessible from that point. It’s just impractical to have such a vulnerable spot completely exposed if you’re going to be fighting villains, so I made everyone’s shirts a little longer.
got rid of platforms. really, have you ever tried to run or jump in platform shoes? it’s nearly impossible, and certainly not practical. these heroes deserve shorter shoes.
elbow and knee pads. really, why aren’t these a common element in hero costumes?? scraping your knees and elbows hurts, and could definitely hinder you in a fight. any hero should have at least some protection from injuries like that.
removed giant cat-paw gloves. Really, those things weren’t practical at all. The new gloves still have paw pads, same as the old design, but are much more practical for holding/grabbing things, etc. they also have claws that can retract into the gloves!
Added some extra fluff, and removed some, too. When redesigning these heroes, I really wanted to give them a few more aspects of the cats they were named after. Ragdoll cats, for example, are super fluffy and often have huge puffs of fur around their necks, so instead of the white collar the other costumes have, I gave ragdoll a bit of fluffy fur around her neck. Mandalay cats, on the other hand, are sleek and shiny, and their fur is usually smooth and clings to their body rather than fluffing out. To reflect this, I removed the fluff from mandalay’s boot cuffs and instead gave her a simple white cuff.
Tail changes. Ragdoll cats usually have big, fluffy tails, so i puffed up ragdoll’s tail to match. (i also changed the coloring to look more like a ragdoll cat’s tail.) A distinguishing feature on pixiebob cats is their short tails, so i shortened pixiebob’s tail, too.
Marking changes. To reflect the usual markings on their corresponding cat breeds, I altered the pussycats’ facial and body markings slightly. Ragdoll has spots over both eyes, like ragdoll cats; tiger and pixiebob both got more stripes to reflect the stripes on their respective cat breeds; and mandalay’s markings were removed altogether, because mandalay cats are usually pure black cats and don’t have any other markings.
Eye color changes. The pussycats’ (except tiger’s) eye colors were changed to those of their corresponding cat breeds. (Mandalay cats usually have yellow eyes, ragdoll cats have blue eyes, and pixiebob cats have either yellow or green eyes.)
Ear changes. It’s subtle, but I tried to slightly alter the ears to reflect the features of the different breeds as well. Mandalay’s are longer and stick straight up; pixiebob’s have little fur tufts on the tips; tiger’s are short and angled.

So a while ago while in a TWDG themed discord server, I started creating a TWDG/Warrior Cats crossover. I’m a pretty active member of the warriors community and I thought it would be cool to design the characters as cats. Everyone seemed to like them when I posted them in the discord server but I never got around to posting them on here. So here are most of them! Each picture is captioned with what breed I used as a reference for each character.

someday I wanna get cats. I want to have everything I need for a few months on hand before I get them. but I feel the need to keep looking at them on stuff like petfinder or breeder websites. I'm not going to mess with the free to good home things, mostly because I am uncomfortable with them.
am thinking I'd like to get two cats at this point. earlier I wanted more, but I don't see having space for more than two of them comfortably anytime soon, since I live in an apartment. I haven't decided 100% what breeds I want to mess with, if I want to adopt from the local rescues or if I want to get purebred kittens. I think this will mostly depend on what's available when I get to the point of having everything I need for them, and if I find a breed I get super attached to. current breeds I'm interested in are pixiebobs, siberians, and ragdolls, but I've also been interested in tuxedos and mackerel tabbies.
I'll admit I am a bit frustrated with the local shelters. they don't seem to update their websites, which is the main way I've been looking recently. I'd have to go in to see the cats they have, and I have to ask family for rides if I want to go anywhere. so I'm kinda stuck not knowing what they've got, if they even have any cats at all, and what the process of dealing with them would be like.

Horizon Zero Dawn Characters As Cat Breeds
• Aloy; Somali cat
Stockier than an Abyssian, my original choice, and if you go with the ruddy coat pattern it's just as effective. I like to think a ruddy Somali captures the first-glance side of Aloy; freckles, ginger hair, and a tough build from years of hunting and fighting.
Tumblr media
• Ikrie; Norwegian Forest Cat
A bit pointer than, say, a Siberian, and smaller than a Maine coon. Still built for colder climates, with a softer look than other big breeds.
Tumblr media
• Mailen; Siberian Cat
Mostly fluff, round and gives off a more serious vibe. Born and bred for the winter, a true Banuk breed if we're being honest.
Tumblr media
• Nil; Javanese cat
This is one of the more personal opinion based decisions. Javanese just have that off-putting aura I get when I see Nil?? Still a gorgeous breed, sort of a sub-type of Siamese. Less vocal, still opinionated, imo a solid fit.
Tumblr media
• Ersa; Russian Blue
Like a grown up version of Erend, even in breed. The Russian Blue looks like it's grown into it's predator body, with a more serious demeanor.
Tumblr media
• Erend; British Shorthair
Round, goofy and friend-shaped. Built on the stocky side, and looks like it could take a few hits. Pair a blue coat with Ersa's Russian Blue and they make a good sibling duo.
Tumblr media
• GAIA; Sphinx
Since GAIA is an AI and not a human, I figured the hairless breed would fit quite well. Plus, can u imagine how adorable cat!GAIA would be in a lil sweater.
Tumblr media
• Elisabet; Abyssian
Gives off the same look as Aloy's breed, but as a more sheltered scientist, this breed is a much better fit for Elisabet. More slim than stocky, with the ticked ginger coat that mimics freckles.
Tumblr media
• Avad; Oriental Shorthair/Turkish Van
I'm still split on this one, bc both breeds fit well. On the Van side, the markings just give off this Sun King vibe, with the ginger head markings ya know? But the Oriental has such a unique, royal facial structure that I'm torn.
Tumblr media
• Sylens; Tonkinese cat
This cat breed tends to be on the compact/sturdy side with a dark brown gradient for their fur. It just felt like a really good fit for Sylens, plus as a branch of Siamese, they would be oppionated by nature. You could also connect the vocal breed to how Sylens seems to talk his way out of trouble and also get info out of people.
Tumblr media
• Petra; Cymric/Manx
Both are incredibly muscled/stocky breeds and those nubby butts are adorable. I'd lean torwards the Cymric personally, since it's body type is more filled out. It looks like a tough, forge-working breed all right.
• Sona; Japanese Bobtail
A bit lanky, but still well muscled, just like a seasoned warrior.
• Vala; Pixiebob
The youngest of the family, so this breed fits the best. It still has the recognizable nubby tail, but with a softer look. She hasn't been on the frontline like her mother or brother yet, so the kit fluff is still prominent.
• Varl; American Bobtail
Not as lanky as it's Japanese counterpart, it fits the son of the war chief very well. Mirroring her body type, without the hunters build just yet.
• Bast; American Shorthair
A basic bitch, bc I couldn't care less.
• Aratak; Ragdoll/Birman
Longer-haired breeds to combat the cold, leaning towards Birman for the more serious looks they have. Plus, the standard colors for both breeds would be similar to Orea's Snowshoe.
• Orea; Snowshoe
I feel like the name explains it pretty well, with a softer more curious look than Aratak's breeds. And maybe I'm biased bc I love Snowshoe's but oh well.
• CYAN; Peterbald
Sort of like the Sphynx for GAIA, I just went with a breed that stood out to mark her as an AI.
• HADES; Lykoi
Scrappy and off putting. I love the breed, but it's a good match compared to the hairless AI's.
• Rost; Maine Coon
Him big!!!!
• Teb; Singapura
Tiny and in no way, shape, or form a tough fighter. Probably the smallest cat breed, apart from Munchkins; which fits Teb who barely seems to age in between the first and second time Aloy meets him.
• Vanasha; Turkish Angora/Persian
I really couldn't decide bc both are equally regal and intimidating??? But I'd lean for the Angora, since Vanasha has abs for days and is definitely not just another pretty face. Plus, Angora's are a much healthier breed than Persian.
• Talanah; Bengal cat
Resembling a true wild cat, there isn't much else to this. She's a hunter to the core, and should look like one.
• Olin; Exotic Shorthair
He gots a squish face. That's it.
