a thought (or rather, a series of them): even in the event that the human diet did require we consume animal meat in order to survive, the goal would still be to figure out the absolute minimum amount of meat we would need to procure in order to sustain ourselves, and hence to design our society in a way that we could consciously regulate our consumption, and to maintain and equalize those levels across time.
why is that? because as highly conscious beings living as part of an ecosystem, and in particular, one with a developed ability to influence our ecosystem at a level that is grossly exaggerated and far supersedes our co-habitants, our duty would still be to optimize our sustenance processes in a way that neutralizes and minimizes harm to the other living beings that we live in connection to, as well as sustains a harmonic relationship with them. this should be relatively obvious to us by this point.
however, we are not the only beings with a right to continued life and existence, to cause harm to others to keep ourselves alive. we only began considering ourselves above this truth in recent history, and our superior power over animals depends almost solely on machinery and weaponry technology, which need equally radical transformation for sustainable human existence.
our duty henceforth, naturally, would obviously be to pursue the most ethical and painless methods of procuring meat as possible - and, as is rarely discussed in manners of "welfarism", methods that are fair to the animals, and give them a sporting chance to escape us, or even fight back against us humans for their own survival, too. hence, any discussions of "welfarism" would be all but meaningless unless a) liberated and b) truly equitable conditions were consciously cultivated for our animal companions.
and why is that? simply put, because any system in which animals are a) enslaved, imprisoned, or have their freedom of motion externally limited by a significantly more physically powerful species, or b) culturally and legally treated as objects that can be owned, processed, and turned into products that generate a profit for a business, is a system that already creates the fundamental conditions for which animal abuse occurs in and stems directly from - an insurmountable power imbalance, and an exploitative, self-serving mindset.
but, here's the thing: no one who currently believes eating meat is necessary for human survival currently cares about pursuing any of this as a goal. to my knowledge, there are no hardcore "obligate carnist" truther activists out there - not organizing, educating nor protesting - nor demanding politicians act in favour of rapid and radical reductions to the scale of these industries, industries that pump billions of animal bodies into factory farms and churn out billions of consumable flesh products.
as it stands, the only people calling for urgent action to swiftly transform our methods of obtaining food into ones that would stand even a chance at mitigating the already apocalyptic ecological destruction and harm to all life on Earth that animal agriculture is currently responsible for, are the ones who are ready to accept the possibility that we must promptly abandon meat consumption and convert to a plant based nutrition system in order to save our home planet and liberate animals.
most of the carnist people who do agree that our current methods are failing and that change is necessary, seem perfectly content to wait around for a perfect world with a perfect meat-obtaining system to arrive, someday in the perfect inconceivable future, hence making almost no changes to their diets or lifestyles in the meantime.
perhaps they monitor themselves to a degree, or pat themselves on the back for "only having meat sometimes," but it is almost certainly not in their political interests to advocate for industry reduction or radical transformation. they do not seem to consider it with any passion whatsoever, and most are so fragile and uncomfortable around the subject that they either desperately evade its discussion, mock its frivolity, or simply defend the industry altogether.
and why, then, is that? in large part, it is because in the modern era, we take meat for granted: meat, which for the majority of recorded human history has been a symbol of excessive wealth and status, is so unimaginably normalized in our culture, that most of us hardly even remember that only a number of decades ago, back in the 90's, social commentators were ringing alarms about the spreading globalization of the fast food industry, and expressing concern for the fact that members of the middle class (and even some of the lower) being able having meat as part of every daily meal was becoming both possible and acceptable.
meat which, for a short period of time (and yet already far too long), has been obtained through the heinous subjucation, violence and slaughter of animals that we are kept intentionally physically blind to and emotionally distant from.
it is because of our entitlement, our cognitive dissonance, our deep-seated, comfortable complacency in the wake of this unfolding ethical and environmental disaster, our complacency in the face of ecological crisis and animal suffering beyond any scale of human comprehension. our complacency, ultimately, as the collective beneficiaries of en-masse animal enslavement and exploitation, and as members of the oppressing class in a rigid hierarchy of species that we ourselves have artificially constructed.
and until social consciousness evolves to the degree that we are equally willing to confront this complacency - without fragility, resorting to mockery, or defense of the status quo - absolutely no meaningful conversations about the possibility of our continued consumption of meat can be taken in good faith. at this point in time, radical activism in the name of total and immediate animal liberation is the only movement that has the best interests of the people, the animals, and the Earth in mind.

In an environment like Medicare, where the systems and controls have been standardized and industrialized, this allows the fraudster to use a technique that the management professor and Medicare historian Malcolm Sparrow christened “shotgun, then rifle.” You first create a panoply of fake transactions, claims, or orders, and see which ones get rejected. Then, having used the “shotgun” phase to gather information about the checking process, you move to the “rifle,” and fire off as many duplicates or slight variations as you can of the ones that worked. The government is often a victim of this sort of tactic, because it has some unusual characteristics as a victim (it is large, and has problems turning customers away: see Chapter 11). Many defense procurement frauds work in a similar way. But large private-sector entities are also vulnerable to shotgun/rifle approaches—something like this tactic is usually at the heart of organized insurance fraud, as well as some credit-card and mortgage frauds. Usually at the heart of a shotgun/rifle disaster, you will find a system that somebody has painstakingly engineered to optimize for the average unit cost. This is of course the right thing to do for most industrial processes, but you need to be careful that the thing you’re working on is an industrial process and not a decision-making process. Optimizing for the common case is not the same thing as trying to get the right answer, and a single medium-sized fraud can blow away all the costs saved by shaving a cent off a hundred thousand “normal” transactions.
DOGE might be able to find fraud in medicare, but they would probably be recapitulating or just taking credit for the already existing efforts that continue to search for medicare fraud and whose employees might have been already fired. You can see the problems with "efficiency" here, it was the search for efficiency in claims processing that gets us here. But you can also see the "one-and-done" approach is precisely what's not going to solve the problem, you need continual effort as scammers change their methods as well, Permanent Revolution you could call it.

Chanel’s ECT helmet, or her “metal bonnet”

Despite her considerable physical strength, Chanel becomes entirely incapacitated during catatonic episodes. Her biggest vulnerability lies in bouts of catatonic stupor, likely originating from an inherited condition passed down from her mother. Catatonia is usually a comorbid disorder, so it exists along a main cognitive or neurological disorder. However, it is unknown which mental disorder Chanel may have given her upbringing. This psychomotor disorder is believed to result from disruptions or imbalances in neurotransmitter pathways, manifesting as symptoms like stupor, mutism, rigidity, waxy flexibility, posturing, and negativism. In extreme instances, it can lead to death, either due to internal complications, known as malignant catatonia, or the inability to meet essential needs because of immobility.
To ensure Chanel's effectiveness in her duties, Sibyl built Chanel a specialized “metal bonnet”, or ECT helmet, which was designed to automatically execute ECT when neurological chemical imbalances were detected ahead of time. She considered the fact that ECT has an 80% to 100% success rate in addressing catatonia and related conditions. This treatment works by inducing minor seizures to recalibrate the brain's chemistry. The helmet emits low-frequency electrical currents to regulate her brain chemistry, preventing such episodes. (ECT is typically given under anesthesia and professional oversight, but, in this fictional instance, Chanel's insensitivity to pain meant one concern was taken off the list) Given its electrical nature, it requires consistent power sources. Sibyl developed this helmet, which is powered by blood as part of their arrangement. In exchange for sustenance, Chanel aids Sibyl by procuring intelligence and bodies from her encounters with traffickers. The helmet is securely bolted into her neck and, although removable, should not be taken off for long periods because the bolts and metal sockets in her neck enable the auto-moderated procedure. These bolts serve as both anchors and receivers, processing signals from electrodes attached to the sockets that contact her neck. These synaptic transmissions occur at the junction where the bolts connect to the sockets, similar to neurons.
The electrodes detect abnormal brain activity, similar to an EEG, and send a small electrical impulse to the bolts. These bolts then relay the information to the control panel at the back of the helmet, which assesses whether conditions are optimal for the procedure. It checks parameters such as the presence of sufficient amounts of non-converted blood, insufficient amounts of non-converted blood, sufficient amounts of fuel-converted blood, or insufficient amounts of fuel-converted blood.
If conditions are safe and the helmet has enough fuel, the control unit sends a signal back to the bolts, which then reaches the metal neck guard near the voice box. This triggers the voice box to alert Chanel of its needs in Morse code. If blood or blood fuel is lacking, the helmet will notify Chanel that it needs her to collect more blood for conversion into fuel to perform the electrocution. If the blood supply is ample but fuel is insufficient, it will inform Chanel that it will begin the conversion process and to station herself somewhere secure so that any neural impulses don’t interfere with the helmet's processes. The remainder of the fuel will be used to catalyze the conversion of blood into fuel.
If conditions are optimal, the voice box gives Chanel a heads-up in Morse code about the number of minutes before a cycle starts, allowing her to find a secure location before a seizure occurs. The helmet can be powered by various fuels, including coagula blood, which can generate electricity through a bioelectrochemical process, or direct contact with an electric outlet. The coagula blood method is preferred due to the mobility it offers compared to stationary electric outlets.
Additionally, her piercings are not merely decorative but are referred to as "modulating electrodes" or "resistive electrodes." Their function is to regulate the electrical signals, preventing excessive current from reaching sensitive areas and ensuring a safe and effective ECT process. These modulating electrodes use materials with specific resistive properties to control the flow of electricity, much like variable resistors in electronic circuits, ensuring precise modulation and safety.
