A Practical Guide to Customizing TFT LCD Displays for Embedded Projects
When designing an embedded system, picking the right display module is more than a technical choice — it directly shapes how users interact with your product.
From medical devices and HMIs to industrial controllers and smart panels, standard TFT LCD modules may not always be enough. That’s where custom displays come in — offering flexibility in electrical interface, mechanical layout, and visual performance.
This guide covers the five key areas you should consider when customizing a TFT LCD for your embedded project.

1. FPC Layout and Pin Mapping
The Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC) connects your LCD module to the mainboard, and in custom designs, this interface is often the first thing to change.
Ask yourself:
Do you need a uniquely shaped or angled FPC to fit inside your housing?
Are there ICs, resistors, or other components on the backlight or CTP that require mechanical clearance?
Is your SBC’s connector pinout compatible with the LCD’s FPC layout?
A mismatch here can lead to signal errors, mechanical stress, or even damage to components.
2. Backlight Brightness and Color Temperature
Not all embedded devices live under the same lighting.
If your product is used outdoors or in industrial lighting, consider high-brightness backlights (≥800 nits). For environments where aesthetics and color warmth matter (like smart mirrors or indoor kiosks), choose the right LED color temperature:
3000K (Warm White): Soft, suitable for medical or ambient lighting
5000K (Neutral White): Balanced tone, accurate colors
6500K+ (Cool White): Sharper, more industrial feel
A poorly lit display can make a great device feel underwhelming.
3. Touch Panel Shape and Bonding Options
If your display includes a touch interface, customizing the Capacitive Touch Panel (CTP) is critical.
Typical customizations include:
Round corners, logo cutouts, button holes
Bonding methods:
Optical bonding: Improves visibility, reduces reflections, stronger seal
Air bonding: More affordable and easier to assemble
The bonding method directly impacts touch accuracy, display clarity, and long-term reliability.
4. Surface Treatments: AG, AR, and AF
For devices exposed to bright light or frequent finger contact, display surface treatments make a noticeable difference.
AG (Anti-Glare): Scatters reflected light, improving readability
AR (Anti-Reflection): Enhances contrast in sunlight or strong lighting
AF (Anti-Fingerprint): Reduces smudges, improves touch feel
Combining AG+AF is a common choice for public-facing touchscreen displays.

"The mat clearly said NOT welcome!" I explained to the vampire, who was standing in the hallway. She looked a bit awkward, not going to lie. I'd never seen a vampire with glasses but here she was, fangs descended. I supposed by this point, people either haven't noticed or they are already half-empty human juice boxes.
The vampire pulled out an honest-to-the-gods notebook from the pocket of her pinafore and squinted and I was unexpectedly reminded of a childhood schoolteacher, except Miss Collins rarely had venom tricking from her mouth and this was sadly apparent in the vampire. I wondered why I wasn't panicking more. Three minutes ago I'd been a bit of a state. Then again, three minutes ago I had thought it was Mr Kabhul and for the moment, a life and death interview with a vampire seemed preferable to explaining to the landlord why Glenn and Jaimin and me had spray painted our silhouettes onto the driveway under the word KAYOOP.
"Here," the vampire said, jabbing a finger at her notebook. "Rule three, no vampire can enter a private home without invitation." She smiled, glasses sliding down her nose a bit. In a human, this would have been endearing, sort of an adorkable librarian vibe, but I was very much aware that we were having a conversation about semantics that had a very real chance of my blood getting siphoned. So, I marched past her and grabbed the tacky doormat from outside, spilling Glenn's trainers onto the floor, then barged back into the house. The corridor was distinctly squashed. The guys and I are not collectively neat and the house is not big to start with. Add an average sized vampire and a slightly-dumpy Me to the equation and it was like playing a game of Sardines. I pushed open my bedroom door - as a side note, nightmare, never pick the downstairs room in a house share, I'll tell you that for free- I opened my room door and stood there instead.
"Look, love," I said, waving the doormat. YOU ARE NOT WELCOME was clearly printed. Clearly ish, anyway. There was a lot of mud on that mat.
The vampires eyes glittered triumphantly and she scrabbled in her pocket, swapping the notepad for a smart phone and prodding at the screen. I wondered idly what tech she was using. Capacitive touchscreens don't work well for vampires. Heck, they sometimes don't work well for elderly humans. Was there some vampire tech company out there somewhere, putting the bite in byte? "There," the vampire announced, showing me the screen. A picture. A photo, in fact. A photo of our mat, where Glenn's manky shoes were partially obscuring our antisocial message.
Ah.
"As you can see, the visible message is "welcome" and therefore it is an open and undefined invitation," the vampire began, picking up speed. She sounded like a lecturer, though perhaps I was projecting Miss Collins again. "While vague, a widely acknowledged definition of welcome is both gladly received and affirmative invitation to do something, ergo the placement of this mat on the threshold of this house is a latent invitation of entry." She smugly stuck her phone back into her pocket.
I took a careful step back into my room. "Fairly argued," I began, a swirly feeling starting up in my stomach. Ah, yes, there was the panic. Hello old friend. "When you say private home, what's your definition? Because I only rent this one bedroom and I don't invite you in..."
The vampire smiled. It was not a pleasant smile.
"Glenn!" I shouted to my housemate. My voice cracked and came out squeaky as I met the glittering, bespectacled eyes of the vampire. "Glenn! Jaimin! We have a problem..."
“the mat clearly said NOT welcome!” i explained to the vampire.

What is the Difference Between Waterproof Touch Panel and Normal Touch Panel?
No matter what field the industrial panel PC is used in, it is important to have a waterproof touch panel. We will always encounter mistakes during the use of the industrial panel PC, which will cause the industrial panel PC to encounter water and cause it to be unable to use normally or have a black screen, thus affecting work efficiency or experience. So at this time, it is very important to have a Shuiproof touch panel.

What are the different types of touch screens?
Touch panels are far more complex than they appear at first glance. The way they sense and respond to touch varies greatly depending on their design and underlying technology. There are four main types of touch panels in common use today: resistive, infrared, optical imaging, and projected capacitive.
Differences between waterproof touch panel
The difference between the waterproof touch panel and other touch screens is that the waterproof touch panel is completely sealed and has a waterproof rating of IP66/IP69K. IP69K is the highest level of waterproof protection, which can protect the panel PC from normal operation and work outdoors when it comes into contact with water during work and even in rainy days or humid environments. The waterproof touch panel is ideal for demanding applications. Humidity does not affect the fully sealed waterproof touch panel at all, and ordinary touch screens do not have this waterproof property.
Waterproof waterproof touch panel
Existing touch screens have certain limitations when used. For example, existing touch screens have the problem of unsatisfactory waterproof effect. When water enters the touch screen, it can easily cause a short circuit on the touch screen, posing certain safety hazards. Using a waterproof touch panel can avoid this problem. The waterproof touch panel prevents water from entering the interior of the touch screen, and also has a good shockproof function to avoid damage to the waterproof touch panel and extend the service life of the waterproof touch panel.
Touch screen types for professional use
It would be a mistake to think that the applications of all these touch panel types are limited to consumer devices, or even to those mentioned previously. In fact, these touch panel types can be found everywhere in everyday life and in all walks of life.
What’s more, in many industries, these touch panels are used less to market products to consumers and more to sell solutions to businesses. Whether in finance, manufacturing, retail, healthcare or education, the demand for touch solutions is always there. Combined with the so-called “Internet of Things”, these touch solutions play a key role in practices related to Industry 4.0.
In practice, these solutions mainly provide personnel management functions. For example, in hospitals, stores or banks, these touchscreens can answer basic questions, provide product information or provide route guidance based on user needs. In manufacturing, on the other hand, these solutions can enable employee management in the form of workstation allocation or attendance tracking.
Ultimately, touch panels are here to stay. In the four decades since their inception, the popularity of this technology has been remarkable. They’ve changed the way we teach in the classroom and the way we collaborate with our colleagues.
While you may not know the specifics of each touch panel, we hope you do now. This knowledge will definitely benefit you, especially if you are interested in Wintouch’s touch solutions.
Final Thoughts
Touch panel technology has advanced significantly since its invention in the 1960s. From affordable resistive panels to cutting-edge, sophisticated projected capacitive screens, each type meets the specific needs of a wide range of industries and applications. Whether in retail, education, corporate environments or individual workplaces, touch panels have become an integral part of our daily lives.
