Match Review: Real Sociedad 1-1 Manchester United
Well, we didn't lose. But we didn't win. And we didn't look especially good against a poor Sociedad side. Hmmmmm.

There were some positives: Joshua Zirkzee's touch and passing are continuing to sharpen up, and his deep forward positioning allowed him his goalscoring opportunity - which he put away. Not a spectacular goal, but a professional, competent finish - and we are chasing that low bar these days.
Leny Yoro looked promising again, Mazraoui dependable, and Matthijs De Ligt is SO MUCH BETTER in that central CB position. Leader, warrior, all round grafter. Top lad.
The problem today was one man: Diogo Dalot.

Now it'd be mean to pick on Dalot alone, but he's getting the heat today. He lacks intelligence, as shown above. I KNOW TO PASS INTO SPACE. I'm a 35 year old who plays football at pub league level. I watch football, I photograph, I commentate, so I'm informed on the subject, but this man's a PROFESSIONAL. He has top class coaches, he came through academies, he has had daily football tuition almost all his life... and he didn't play this ball. At best it's stupidity, and at worst it's malicious because he doesn't like or trust Rasmus Hojlund.
That's not to say Hojlund doesn't make mistakes. He had a couple of moments where even Chido Obi would have made the correct movement and had the right body positioning to do so. He's also one lacking some intelligence, but I fear he's second guessing himself through a severe lack of confidence.

As for the game itself, I felt this was the most 'Amorim' performance we've seen, and by that I mean the understanding of his system. The movement, the transitions, the team shape... it seemed a lot more fluid and fluent.
United's goal came from a cool outside-foot pass from Casemiro, a dogshit touch from Dalot but a quick dispatch of the correction, into Garnacho. Smartly put on the right, he cut in and played the pass to Zirkzee - freed up by space created by Hojlund - to neatly hit home into the bottom left corner.
Sociedad were on the back foot but the penalty (legit but cruel) flipped the game on its head and exposed United to all the fatigue and doubt once more. Bruno was adjudged to have handballed but really, was it clear or obvious? No. So why VAR?

There were of course mistakes, but today it was more our wing backs than the central players. Casemiro was notably dependable. The issue is limited depth and players flagging with fatigue. We saw Eriksen, Lindelof and Collyer subbed on. I'd have liked Amass for one of the wing backs. A mad few minutes for an eager youngster known for his dribbling and pace... could have been a spark to nick the win.
It's a shame that Chido Obi wasn't registered, because I feel he would have had a big impact here against Sociedad in lieu of Hojlund. But that being said, many people would. Weghorst or Ighalo would even.

United are in a bad way. A draw in Spain isn't bad, and we remain undefeated in Europe, but we have Arsenal on Sunday and the Sociedad second leg next Thursday. This is a make-or-break week for the team.
Defeat on Sunday could kill our confidence ahead of a must-win tie, because no Europa League trophy means no Champions League money. That's how shit it is also - we're talking money, not prestige or the chance to win the biggest trophy. We need cash.
The only upside is that the bigger teams have drawn the best results out of us. Maybe, just maybe, we can avoid defeat versus Arsenal, and use that to nick a narrow win over Sociedad. I'll take limping to the finish line. I just need something from this season to give me hope.
