+ I liked the music, what limited you really get to listen to behind the sound of the nice banter of the Ghosts or the Cartel making calls.
+ The story was generalized, streamlined, but you can follow ANY path you want.

The island was supposed to be a world of innovation and coined “World 2.0” by Jace Skell, this was not the case though. BEAUTIFULLY OVERBOARD
Breakpoint reminds me of those intellectuals that overexplain something and go into so much detail that everyone leaves saying “HUH”. The game brings a beautiful island into our views with different environments to concur as well as enemies, giving it that extra touch of change and difference from mission to mission. Here is the thing though, as much variant as there is; it is too much, sometimes taking you a good 10 minutes to reach your objective to actually start the mission. The problem does not lie with the travelling because they put fast travel to points on the map; the problem lies in the “too much of a good thing”. Personally, on open world games I like to roam and take full advantage of the game’s offering, however, I felt myself going mindlessly through missions just because I did not want to trek across the entire map just to go through an entire mission to find 1 blue print. The story became mechanical and I lost that entire “oh look a butterfly” side mission journey that makes playing the game worth the time.

WORTH THE TIME THOUGH?
When it came to the actual gameplay, I was extremely surprised at how much fun I had running through missions due to the playstyles of each mission. Playing at a higher difficulty turned up the importance of each encounter with the Wolves. Strategically planning an entry point and who to take down first, how to stay out of sight of automated turrets and watch-drones made for exciting time spent during the missions. The ease of the controls with the keyboard is something you don’t see very often on PC, easy to learn and quick to engage. The efforts put into the objectives made it an amazing experience, with the thinking factor of the game turned up to max I felt myself engrossed in missions.

SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT
If you played Wildlands, you’ll know the general foundation of Breakpoint. In fairness, it’s a follow up title with links between the two. However, the same way wildlands felt and came across when it came out is the same way Breakpoint feels at this point. The title feels unfinished and not polished enough to call itself a AAA title. Wildlands did eventually see major updates some out that made it a lot smoother and more fun for the masses, which saw it draw a large fan base. The issue I faced with Breakpoint was the great number of issues I came across and the raw interactions I seemed to bump into. Visually I did not encounter many glitches or bugs but boy did I struggle with simple things like the camera getting stuck between taking cover or the character model clipped when I transition from cover to cover indoors. There was one point where I was laying on a rock to snipe into a camp and every time I went ADS the character model went full scorpion fit mode and start convulsing. A lot of these issues made me feel like the game was rushed and was not played through enough during the BETA phase. Perhaps the vast space and interactions makes it near impossible to get these kinds of things right and UBISOFT is relying on us to report back these issues, but then again I ask, why was the BETA not lengthened for this?

INTRIGUING AND PLANKED
In a world where Jon Bernthal is your antagonist, you would think “boring” would be the last thing someone says about this story. Well, you think right. The story is somewhat exciting and a little predictable on my end but that might be me. Learning your link to the now leader of the “bad guys” is an awesome experience in itself, but figuring out why and what is happening takes a backseat to this (Which I think was a smart move). Creating that personal character development and interaction creates a broken bind that is difficult to explain. The story is told well and characters are portrayed with great voice work and some awesome amazing writing. The main issue is the NOC side of the game; I felt like I was shooting walking scarecrows, mindless sacks of meat that were nothing but targets to slow down your mission. It was so bad at one point I restarted the game and turned up the difficulty to maximum so that I could get the best experience! Getting one shot by a screaming sack of meat was better than being stealthy just to shoot a mindless goof in the back of the head.

FUN WITH THE MASSES
The title seems thrive in the co-op function and cannot be stopped when you and your mates are sneaking around communicating your movements and actions in discord. The fun can be had with this, especially when you play like a spec ops team, making calls out and distracting the enemies together (like Wildlands before). Jumping into the PVP side of games usually comes to me quite naturally but I found myself not really worrying about that side of the game quite yet and only jumped in for a few rounds just to unlock my items and achievements from this. The PVP section is quite fast paced compared to the main game and the play styles needs to switch drastically if you’re a stealthier play like myself. I did have lots of fun but I would not say that this is even the 3rd or 4th strongest point about this game.

QUALITY TO COME
In all honesty, I believe in this game and the Ghost Recon titles has a whole, I trust in the developers and the studio to add more to this game like they did to Wildlands. With character customization and the level of skill tree progression, insane objective boards and crafting mechanics the game sure has potential to become one the other greatest objective based looter shooter out there in my opinion, if they devs choose to lead it that route. I say grab it if you’re a Recon fan, try it and if you don’t like it follow the patches until you see the changes you want because trust me they will come.

The RX 5500 is the budget GPU from AMD and is designed to be lower cost but still delivers great performance at 1080p. The packaging for the RX 5500 XT is wrapped in the Phanton Gaming color scheme and fonts. The front of the box clearly shows this is a Phantom Gaming card and which series it belongs to. In this case, this is the Radeon RX 5500 XT. On the back, ASRock dives into more detail on the features and specifications of the Phantom Gaming 5500 XT.
  Upon opening the box, you’ll be presented with a foam top layer that lifts to reveal the Phantom Gaming RX 5500 XT securely tucked away and wrapped in an antistatic bag. You won’t find much of an installation kit and I wouldn’t expect to with this GPU. A quick start guide is all that’s included.

A Closer Look at the Phantom Gaming RX 5500 XT
Straight out of the box, the Phantom Gaming RX 5500 XT has a protective layer of cling plastic that covers the shroud to protect from scratches and scrapes.
  After unwrapping the card, you can see the design of the fan shroud. The main body of the shroud is made of black plastic with red highlights on the ridges. The gunmetal grey brushed aluminum accent pieces are made from plastic as well. The main feature on the top side of the card is the two 90mm fans used to cool it. The dimensions of the GPU are 240.57 x 127.16 x 41.92 mm
  Flipping the card over shows a metal backplate that covers the full length of the PCB and maintains the Phantom Gaming theme set by ASRock’s RX 5700 XT. While the PCB is short, it is a little unusual to see a metal backplate on a $200.00 GPU.
  Making our way around the Phantom Gaming RX 5500 XT, we’ll start with the I/O. To get you connected there are three DisplayPort 1.4 connectors and a single HDMI 2.0b connector. The maximum resolution this card can support is  8K (7680×4320) at 60 Hz.
  On the showing edge, the prominent feature is the Phantom Gaming logo. This is an RGB logo that can be controlled with ASRock’s Polychrome software. The shroud does a good job of mostly hiding the heat sink. As well, a single 8-pin PCIe power connector is all that is required to power the Phantom Gaming RX 5500 XT.
  The very back of the card shows more of the heatsink exposed. The last part of the heatsink extends a bit past the PCB which allows airflow to pass through the fins of the heat sink with little resistance.
  The motherboard side of the GPU shows a bit more of the copper heat pipes used to keep it cool. I think the contrast of copper, black, and gunmetal grey is eye-catching. Too bad it is all hidden next to the motherboard.
  Dual 90mm fans are perched on the top of the Phantom Gaming RX 5500 XT. The blades are translucent and when spinning almost disappear. If you were to vertical mount the GPU, I think it would give an interesting effect.

There are many ways to benchmark GPUs. With these benchmarks our goal is to do two things: first to show the performance of the card and secondly to make them easy to replicate. With a similarly configured system, you should be able to get similar results to compare your current graphics card against. There will always be a variance from system to system. All games for this review are tested with the HIGHEST IN-GAME  PRESET unless otherwise specified. A fresh build of 1909 and all drivers and games were installed. No changes were made from the defaults in the BIOS, Windows 10 operating system, or provided manufactures software.
Game frame rates are averaged from the results of 3 benchmark runs at each resolution.
Synthetic Tests
3DMark Firestrike from Futuremark is a Semi-synthetic DirectX11 benchmark designed for high-performance gaming PCs. Firestrike performs advanced geometry, illumination and particle tests with its Graphics benchmark and performs physics simulations using the CPU. Firestrike Ultra Kicks it up a notch and ratchets up the resolution to 4K and turns the quality up a bit.
Firestrike Ultra is pretty brutal on any graphics card and especially budget cards.  However, the Phantom Gaming RX 5500 XT does well as it outscored the Gigabyte RX 5500 XT with a score of 3749 in the graphics arena.
  If Firestrike Ultra is brutal, Timespy Extreme is uber brutal. Both RX 5500 XT cards scored about the same here.  Only a couple of points separate them and are well within the margin of error.
  The Orange Room test from VR Mark represents VR performance with the original HTC Vive or Oculus Rift. There’s a very slight advantage for the Phantom Gaming RX 5500 XT in this benchmark, but not much of one.
  The Cyan Room Benchmark represents high-end VR hardware such as the Rift S. Both of the 5500 XT cards are very close in performance, however, if we were to call a leader, it would be the Phantom Gaming GPU.
  Finally, there is the Blue Room benchmark. This is designed to test GPUs at future VR Hardware and brings a lot of cards to their knees. The RX 5500s are tied with no clear leader.
      The Superposition benchmark sees the two RX 5500 XTs nearly tie in performance once more although a slight advantage goes to the ASRock GPU.
    When we bump the resolution to 8K, only two points separate the ASRock and Gigabyte cards.

  Wolfenstein: Youngblood is a first-person shooter developed by MachineGames and Arkane Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks as a spin-off of the Wolfenstein series, The player assumes control of either Jessie or Zofia Blazkowicz from a first-person perspective; an optional cooperative multiplayer mode is included. Players can complete the game with another player or with an artificial intelligence substitute. Missions can be completed in a non-linear order, and players can unlock new gear and abilities as they progress in the game.
This the only oddity in the benchmark charts. The Phantom Gaming RX 5500 XT outscored the Gigabyte 5500 XT by a large margin. I re-ran the tests on both cards multiple times with the same result with each benchmark run.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is a Western-themed action-adventure game. Played from a first or third-person perspective, the game is set in an open-world environment featuring a fictionalized version of the Western, Midwestern and Southern United States in 1899, during the latter half of the Wild West era and the turn of the twentieth century. For most of the game, the player controls outlaw Arthur Morgan, a member of the Van der Linde gang, as he completes numerous missions—linear scenarios with set objectives—to progress through the story; from the game’s epilogue, the player controls John Marston. Outside of missions, the player may freely roam its interactive world.

Phantom Gaming RX 5500 XT Conclusion and Final Thoughts
My first experience with an ASRock GPU was a good one. It performed exactly as I would expect considering that I reviewed the Gigabyte RX 5500 XT a few months before. The GPU is consistently able to deliver playable framerates at 1080p which is exactly where AMD wanted this card to be. Granted, we’re not over 60 FPS in a few games I benchmarked at the highest in-game settings and dropping the graphics fidelity down a notch or two will increase performance. As I was benchmarking and playing games over the last few weeks, I really didn’t notice any performance hiccups. Gameplay remained smooth. The most time I spent in-game was with Far Cry New Dawn and while it is an AMD optimized title, it runs very well on the 5500 series.
As far as overclocking, I’ve had an extremely rough time overclocking AMD Radeon RX 5XXX series cards. I think the RX 5600 was the only card that I could get to overclock. However, stock speeds put this GPU at a base clock of 1685 MHz, a game clock of 1737 MHz, and a boost clock up to 1845 MHz and temperatures hovered right around 60°C during a heavy gaming session.
The current driver suite is much better as well. across the board, I saw a slight uptick in performance but I also experienced quite a bit more stability. Between reviews, I’ll grab the latest driver and start testing to keep benchmarks current, etc. The current AMD GPU driver is more stable now than the one released a few months ago. I didn’t experience any black  screens when launching games nor did I experience any crashes. Overall, the experience was very smooth but it hasn’t always been that way. I still lack the 1600 series GPUs from Nvidia to compare against. So, I can only base the results on what I’ve actually tested.
One of my hangups with the gigabyte RX5500 XT was the price. At the time of this review, the Gigabyte RX 5500 XT retails on Newegg for 249.97. This is a $50.00 mark up over the AMD suggested price of $199. The ASRock Phantom Gaming RX 5500 XT retails on Newegg for $199 at the time of this review. This makes the Phantom Gaming RX 5500 XT a great value. The card performs well at 1080p as it should. Even better, it is as close to MSRP as you can get. If you’re looking to build a gaming rig and not break the bank, the Phantom Gaming RX 5500 XT from ASRock should really make your list.

We have spent the last week running around Auroa in Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint. Does the game stay true to the series, or did the franchise go AWOL?
  Read on to find out
The Ghost Recon franchise dates back to 2001 and has seen ten previous installments in the series. The series follow soldiers from Delta Company, First Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group, also known as Ghosts, a fictional elite special operations unit of the United States Army under the Joint Special Operations Command. Ghost Recon Breakpoint picks up 4 years after the last game in the series, Ghost Recon Wildlands, and takes place on a fictional archipelago in the Pacific called Auroa.
Deep Storyline
The story opens as you are riding in a helicopter on your way to investigate who or what sunk a cargo ship as it was departing the island chain. You are Lieutenant Colonel Anthony “Nomad” Perryman: a well trained Tier One Operator, in charge of the group of soldiers sent along with you to investigate what really happened in this archipelago. Your chopper is brought down by an unknown enemy force, and you are left hanging in a tree while all of your group’s choppers are also taken out by a swarm of what looks like angry bats. As you work your way down out of the tree, and wade through the wreckage and carnage of your downed choppers, you come across a group of heavily armed soldiers called Wolves, being led by someone you thought was your friend, former Ghost Cole D. Walker.
The island chain of Auroa had been purchased by Jace Skell, a tech genius and founder of Skell Technology. Skell Tech was world known for its development of AI and drone technology, married together in a frighteningly deadly way. Knowing this, it was pretty obvious that your choppers were taken out by swarms of drones. It is up to you, and your teammates, to free the archipelago from the military force that has taken over the island chain, with whatever weaponry you can scavenge for, and no government support. You must unravel the truth, and kill anyone that gets in your way, and find out why your buddy Cole went to the dark side.
Storytelling Throughout the Gameplay
The story is told through cut scenes and collectibles as you complete missions and gather intel. The story is well written with an intriguing storyline and even more so intriguing characters. The voice acting and character animations, both facial and physical, are well done, and fans of the Walking Dead will recognize the actor playing Cole Walker as Shane Walsh (aka Jon Bernthal). He does a great job as the villain in the story, which isn’t always easy when all you are doing is talking into a mic. Even his walk is recognizable, so the animators did a great job of capturing his likeness as well as his facial and physical animations.
This is Ghost Recon
The game is played in the third person, and is designed for co-op play and stealth. The game stays true to its Ghost Recon roots, but also evolves into a bit of a looter-shooter in that guys you gun down generally drop weapons, ammo, or other gear and gathering it up is a huge benefit for you. The tougher they are, the better the loot, generally speaking, and the gear is usually a bit better than what you currently have equipped. All of the gear has a gear score, which determines your overall score when averaged out across every slot, and the higher your score the farther in the game you can progress and the higher ranked enemies you can attempt to defeat.
The game has an evolved weapon and gear system reminiscent of The Division series, but also with an underlying permanent level up system. The MK weapon upgrade system, once fully unlocked in your skills tree, upgrades not only the current weapon you are working on, but all future weapons of that exact same kind. i.e. Upgrade an MP5 to MK3 and all future MP5s you pick up will already be a MK3.  Same goes for your HTI or your M82, as well as handguns. It’s a great underlying system that will make your weapons more accurate, deadlier, and easier to handle, and only have to be achieved once for each unique weapon. It would be nice if additions such as extended mags, once purchased, were also automatically added, but instead you’ll have to manually add any of the desired add-ons manually every time you pick up a higher valued weapon. The add-on system is very deep, and add-ons can be found in the shop and scattered through Auroa.
The Classes of Ghost Recon: Breakpoint
With Breakpoint being designed for co-op gameplay, it’s a great idea to not only understand the Class system of the game, but also utilize it to your advantage as a team. There are four classes, each with their own unique abilities and traits. A well rounded team would theoretically have one of each, but really that should be determined by your squad goals and not just let the game dictate your set-up. The four classes are Field Medic, Assault, Panther, and Sharpshooter. Each class compliments the team differently, with things like a healing drone for the medic, cloaking spray for the panther, tear gas for the assault class, and a sensor launcher for the sharpshooter. The effects generated are shared across the team, so those bad guys the sensor launcher finds are revealed to everyone, and that healing drone owned by the medic might just save your ass on more than a few occasions if your teammate can reach you with it.
Ubisoft was nice enough to send us 4 codes for the game so we were able to squad up and play through quite a few story missions, as well as attack a few bases full of Wolves. We also spent some time alone to get a feel for the differences between the two play styles. Playing solo can really suck if you try to take down a Wolf base or even some of the story missions, depending on your difficulty settings. You can unlock some little drones that give you some sync shots since there is no AI to assist you when going solo right now, but even with those going solo can be a challenge. The game truly is designed with co-op in mind, and it’s also designed to have the different classes working together. Matchmaking is available, so even if you have no friends with the game, finding some teammates is pretty easy.
Massive Game World With So Much to Do
The game world of Auroa is huge. Massive. Immense. There are side missions to be had everywhere and a team could be easily side tracked for hours, hunting folks down, gathering intel, blueprints, or weapon accessories. The missions range from a simple hunt-and-kill-without-being-seen, to multi-location searches that will have you flying across the map, with several stops along the way, clearing locations, gathering intel, and then moving on to the next location. It’s damn near impossible to focus on the main mission when there are so many other things to do, and/or kill.
Fast Travel Points Called Bivouacs
The game world does have a central hub called Erewhon. It’s a hidden cave, masked with some sort of electronic blocker, almost like a Faraday cage, so that the bad guys can’t find this hidden location with their ever present drones. Within it you’ll be able to find squad mates, buy new gear, find new missions, and start raids. As you progress through the story, more and more people move to this location, and unlock even more missions, as if you didn’t already have enough to do. There is also a special area called a bivouac (pronounced biv-wack for those that have never heard the word before) .
Bivouacs can be used to rest up, replenish grenades and such, visit the shop to purchase weapons and gear, as well as purchase vehicles or spawn vehicles you already own. You can also swap out your class while there.These things are everywhere and if you are flying around in a chopper and see smoke trails from a camp fire, be sure to fly down close enough to unlock that bivouac. They are also fast travel points, so Erewhon is always a fast travel away. They are also great for using buffs like bonus XP for 60 minutes, or increased accuracy or better stamina. There are 6 different buffs to choose from, and they help others as well. Each game session should be started at a bivouac just so you can fire up one of them. Not all bivouacs are created equal, as some wont allow spawning of vehicles due to their confined locations, so keep that in mind if you are looking for a spot to grab a chopper you own.
Shortcuts With Real Dollars
Ubisoft has decided to offer gamers the ability to pay for some short cuts via the in-game store. There are two types of currency in-game. There’s Skell credits which you’ll earn at a pretty quick rate, and then there’s Ghost Coins which you can purchase with real world cash. If you are impatient and want to unlock certain weapons right away without having to play through the game to unlock them, you can purchase Ghost Coins and then proceed to purchase blueprints, weapons, and even the material needed to upgrade a weapon to MK1, a long with vehicles and Skell Credit bundles. Everything purchased with these Ghost Coins are shareable across all three of your available game save slots. All of these items and upgrades can be acquired from just playing the game, but not everyone has the time to invest to fully reach that potentiality.
Micro-transactions have been around for a long time now, and as long as they don’t give a gamer a true advantage in multi-player (sports games are really bad about this), I have no issue with a company trying to make a few extra bucks. In the long run, it’ll help them create a better future product, while we as gamers reap the benefits of the available short cuts if we so desire. For a group of gamers that have the time to invest in Ghost Recon Breakpoint, these shortcuts really take away from the fun in acquiring the items they are selling. For folks that just want to play casually, when ever they have some free time, shortcuts make sense.
Not Perfect But Still A Lot of Fun
Ghost Recon Breakpoint isn’t a perfect game, as we came across a few glitches and bugs here and there, but there is truly never a dull moment. Playing as a group, we all shared some of the same criticisms and concerns such as the inability to bleed out if you are out of reach from a healing teammate, or when spawning on a teammate we were sometimes spawned over a kilometer away, or spawned right into an area with bad guys on top of you, emptying their automatic weapons into your quickly dying corpse. Occasionally when flying as a group in a chopper, the pilot might be 40 feet out in front of it, flying through the air in a sitting position.
Developer Ubisoft Paris took a lot of what worked great in Ghost Recon Wildlands and brought that over to Ghost Recon Breakpoint, then added a new skill system, created a better weapon and gear system, and created an awesome Class system geared towards team work. If you are looking for a team based shooter, with incredible graphics, a lot of stuff to do, and some challenging bad asses to kill, this game is for you.

Rainbow Six Siege crosses over with Ghost Recon Wildlands in new PVE missions
Ubisoft’s vision of the Tom Clancy-verse is getting yet another Marvel-esque crossover, as the Rainbow Six Siege team joins Ghost Recon Wildlands. I think this means we’re about six months away from Sam Fisher leading a team of Clancy creations to stop a trickster god from ruling the world. (Or something like that.)
There’s not much to go on here, with no more than a quick trailer teasing the new crossover. You can check it out below, but it essentially runs down the previous special events in the form of badges and patches on the Wildlands crew. It all culminates with a “6” patch, as somebody looks toward a freshly landed helicopter with some new friends disembarking.

This event will apparently be called - appropriately enough - The Badge, and will be part of Special Operation 2 launching on July 24. A more fully featured trailer will come on July 23. Like the Splinter Cell crossover in Special Operation 1, it seems this one will entail a set of free PVE missions

Game Review: Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon - Wildlands (Xbox One)
Mission Failed.
It’s a phrase that this game is too keen on shoving in your face after something goes wrong, and you can bet it will. I lost track of how many missions I had to re-attempt well over a dozen times, usually due to the awful detection system or because of the too-many-commands attached to a single button. Ghost Recon: Wildlands is as every bit as frustrating as it can be entertaining, providing you set the bar very low, and then set it even lower.
With the release of its first DLC expansion, Narco Road, I finally got around to finishing the main game, eliminating all the cartel leaders and ensuring I completed each and every story mission, including replaying the last mission for the alternative ending, both of which imply there is more for this team of ghosts to tackle in the inevitable Wildlands 2.
Ghost Recon: Wildlands is your typical Ubisoft open world game that has its copied and pasted locations sprinkled around with the same care as its thousands of icons that share the same map. While it seems that the publisher is looking to make nearly every one of its franchises some form of an open world, it does so with the least amount of care and passion. There isn’t a single frame in this game that has any sort of polish or, like I just mentioned, passion, behind it. Nearly every aspect of this game is repeating almost immediately after it’s given us something unique. Whether it’s reasons for taking down a cartel drug lord or a random line of dialogue, you will end up doing the same things, hearing the same things, again and again. I must have heard one of my AI companions repeat the same joke well over twenty times, or one of them asking why I would not let them drive; which the game doesn’t even allow, so why ask it? If I had to hear “and baby makes three.” one more time, I fully expected I would just uninstall the game right then and there.
Upon arriving in Bolivia, you are tasked with tracking down a Cartel Warlord named El Sueño and you’ll need to dismantle his empire in order to flush him out. While this is the typical way these stories usually play out, it does so in the most boring way possible. There are several locations on the map with a cartel captain in charge that needs to be flushed out. While the outcome with the cartel leader is making them spill the beans on El Sueño, or just flat out killing them, the setup to locating them is the same for each and every captain you’ll encounter and this game seems built upon you reliving the same hour of gameplay over and over again. While you are free to tackle the captains in any order you wish, the story is never connected in a way that shows the level of threat you possess as you eliminate leader after leader. Each province you clear of a captain is checked off as if it doesn’t matter to the core story, and aside from a phone call from El Sueño late in the game, he seems almost disconnected from the very narrative that is built upon taking him down. I would have loved to have seen the few remaining captains band together to stop you, and since the order is up to you, these scenes would play out differently depending on who was left remaining.
As you enter a new province on the map, your contact will radio you with information in regards to your target, this info is also joined with a narrated cutscene that introduces you to who the target is and the backstory of who they are. These scenes are ok but the use of real people mixed with their awful character models is very distracting and these moments stand out in a very bad way. The problem with each of these leaders is that apart from some flimsy backstory, they become nothing more than background dressing and are so two-dimensional that none of them really stand out. Had each of these characters been involved in more of the missions leading up to them, then maybe, and just maybe, the game would have been far better for it.
Once you’ve been prepped with this intel and are ready to explore, yellow folder icons will populate the map. These are the intel needed to find people or items required to find your target. These missions at the start of the game are fun, sometimes enjoyable and depending on which province you head into, can offer you a wealth of variety. The problem is there is only a small handful of variations on how these story missions play out; Elimination or retrieval.
While the circumstances regarding each mission will vary, this two-fold approach is constant throughout the game. You will either kill your target, destroy property, or retrieve someone to become a snitch or take items like a car to lure out your target. There are small variations on the elimination and retrieval types that do worm their way out of these labels, but they are so rare and frankly, they still operate very similar.
This repeated structure is semi-broken up with another form of repeated structure with its side activities like protecting a radio cart, flipping switches on a few towers or recovering some supplies for the rebels, usually in the form of a plane, helicopter or another type of vehicle. These missions are ok, but if you play by yourself and not online with actual people, then prepare to fail on every attempt protecting that damn radio cart. These missions will help you upgrade your support skills like calling in a mortar strike or requesting a vehicle for a getaway.
Despite my ramblings of disappointment with the title, I did have many moments of enjoyment with the 50 some hours I spent with it. Among the echoing nature of how it disperses its content, there is still an enjoyable game here. The character creation system could be a bit better in the variety of clothes and hairstyles, but overall it allowed me to make a fairly enjoyable character. The shooting aspects of the game are handled well and with a quick tap of a button to change shoulder perspective, it allows you to get a solid shot no matter the way you play.
I’ve played a good portion of it solo as while I did have an ok time playing with other people, I find that most players don’t approach the game in the same way I do and this can lead to frustration when your playstyles clash. There is something very satisfying when a plan comes together in this game as a few missions do give you the ability to tackle a mission in a variety of different ways and then you’ll head into the next mission that is structured in such a way where there is a clear way how to go about this and any other attempt will be met with a mission failed screen.
What I rather liked about playing solo was the Sync shot system of my NPC companions. When you play online, even with just one more person, this AI team is nowhere to be found, taking your team down from four to two, for some odd reason. This Sync shot can be upgraded to three one-shot kills and this tactical method of clearing out a base comes with a swift delight of a pop, pop, pop and they drop. I lost track of how many bases I cleared without myself firing off a single shot and while the Sync shot can be done in co-op online, it lacks the same flair unless you are playing with a group of friends and not some randoms that can just go Rambo at any minute. The multiplayer is fun when you can stay connected, and I like the fact that your 3 other co-op partners retain any progress made on the map and missions can be easily replayed to catch up with a friend who may have fallen behind. There was one aspect of playing solo that did rather annoy me; the nonstop window that would pop up asking me to hold A to join an online match.
The best aspect of playing with a large group of people is the variety of ways you can infiltrate the base. Having a team conquer a base from all sides is something that is rather difficult to do with an AI team. Flying over a hillside with a group in several vehicles is extremely fun, as is the rush of almost getting caught until your teammate drops a nearby enemy who just spotted you. For as much fun as I had with my AI companions, some experiences in this game are vastly improved with real life players, regardless of how long you’ve known them. Going back to infiltrating bases, I found it rather odd that for how the ghosts are a team of professionals, that no one has a set of wire cutters for a chain link fence or a grappling hook for a difficult climb.
The detection system is probably one of the worst ways this type of mechanic has ever been done in a video game. I’ve been spotted through buildings, from distances that make no sense for detection, and through walls when the enemy is not even facing me. I’ve gone prone on a hillside and taken out a whole base and then a random car will spot me from below and fail the mission for me. The worst is when you are minutes away from completing a mission and a random helicopter will spot you and then the proverbial you-know-what hits the fan, and when it does, then my word does this game ever throw whatever it can at you, and then it will pile on even more enemies in such force that you’ll beg to reload the checkpoint and try again, but you have to die since there is no manual way to reload that checkpoint, and even then, the checkpoint will be either at the start of the mission or at a distance that is rather far away from where you were.
As you find guns and grenade-like items on the battlefield, you’ll level up your character and earn skill points. These points are used to purchase skills like more ammo capacity, upgrades for your reconnaissance drone, or being able to take more damage. There are dozens of skills that can be unlocked and they will require resources as well as those skills points. The resources; Medicine, Food, Gasoline, and Comm Tools are scattered around the mini-map with green icons. You can earn higher quantities of these resources from the side activities that are also green icons on the already populated icon-filled map. Other items that join the collectible hunting are upgrade stars that add perks to certain skills you can purchase, and parts that you can equip to certain guns to give them better scopes or enhance other traits to make them more lethal. While collecting items can bring out the OCD in you, depending if you are a completionist or not, the icon-filled map is just ridiculous. I’m all for adding content to a game, but this method of making your game a collectible hunt is just filler, plain and simple.
Vehicles can make or break your experience here as they can come off a bit weightless and far too bouncy. I love the motorbikes, when you don’t get flung off one that is, and was my main method of transportation. I loved that you don’t have to wait for your AI companions to get in the vehicle as they will teleport to a seat in the car as you speed away, even if they are dead. Vehicles do tend to bounce around far too much and this can lead to accidentally rolling a car down a hill or getting it wedged between some rocks while racing down a rocky mountain. Helicopters I found a bit slow to take off and the learning curve of how to properly fly a plane can take some getting used to.
The development team spent two weeks in Bolivia taking in the location and looking to make the game as visually impressive as they could, as the Anvil engine is fairly impressive. While character models are quite bad, the environments are not and can look rather great at times, if a bit copied and pasted. Bases all tend to look the same and you will get moments of Deja Vu as you take a few down. The variety in Bolivia here is decent as you’ll take to jungles, arid deserts and snow filled mountains. There are also many locations that are based upon real-life landmarks that add a bit of credibility to the world Ubisoft Paris has created.
The audio in Wildlands is a mixed bag for sure, as radio stations became so annoying that Ubisoft themselves produced a patch that allowed you to turn them off. The audio between the team is fantastic, at first, but starts to repeat itself so much it became painful to listen to. The voice acting itself is split down the middle with a few actors giving solid performances while a few of them really looked to ham it up.
As I mentioned in my opening paragraph, Wildlands tends to put a lot of commands on the controller, especially the A button if you are playing on Xbox or the X button on PS4. When you go to target an enemy for the Sync shot, you’ll press A/X to lock them in. The A/X button, however; is also the climb button. I’ve had so many times where the enemy moved slightly and my character would then mantle over my cover and expose themselves, to either the base then going on alert or part of the instant fail mechanic they use far too often, all for my attempt at locking them in for a Sync shot.
Another few issues that caused a bit of frustration is the climbing mechanic and the inability to swap to the driver’s seat should you select the wrong door. There are several instances in the game where you can climb and it works well when it wants to, but not when it needs to. Your character will have no problem scaling a 5-foot wall when it’s required but will be unable to when it’s a short 2-foot incline where climbing isn’t allowed. I’ve tried to use a vehicle as a step ladder of sorts to climb over a fence and it just wouldn’t allow it. When you enter in a rear passenger door you can only swap to the other seat and not to the driver’s seat. While not a huge issue, it has caused me a great deal of time wasted having to exit the vehicle and re-enter it to the proper seat and more often than not, my target got away. I also found that backing up in a vehicle would swing the camera around to see the front of vehicle and this can cause you to drive in a direction you don’t want too and the time needed to swing the camera back around can lead to a target getting away or your vehicle taking a lot of damage.
Apart from the minor, but frustrating control issues, the game is rather buggy and glitches were fairly constant throughout my time with the game. I’ve had NPC’s stop their role in a quest, as several times where I was to tail or protect the NPC as they proceeded to their end location just stop and stand there, with a few cases of them getting stuck in traffic because other NPC’s got in an accident on the road, as you can see in the picture here. I’ve had one time where as I was driving my captive to my home base just suddenly die in the car. I’ve had enemies discover me through walls, or shoot at me through them as well. There was even a time where I went to snap a guard’s neck and he dropped to the floor before I could touch him, but the animation still played out. I’ve had the game lock me out of my gun and not allow me to fire, forcing me to turn the game off and start it up again. I could go on and on with more examples of glitches and bugs, but basically, my point is that the game is just full of them.
Ghost Recon: Wildlands is a mess, plain and simple. Yes, it can be fun, enjoyable, and with the right group of people, a blast. That being said, the game looks to repeat too much of itself and wears out its welcome fast. The copy and pasted approach to how the world is constructed is lazy and environments lack that wow factor to make their set pieces memorable. As a game, Wildlands is a bare minimum effort, stretching its mechanics across a map that is so densely packed with collectibles that it can ruin the pacing of what the story expects from you.
Ubisoft has taken a franchise that could easily go toe to toe with the likes of Battlefield and Call of Duty and turned it into a Division meets Far Cry game that at no point feels like a Ghost Recon title. While I am not opposed to a developer changing up their franchise and breathing new life into it, the fact you are slapping a new coat of paint on recycled and overused mechanics isn’t new, it’s giving us the same thing again with a new name and expecting us to reward you for it.

Games I’m Excited for in 2017
A new year, means a new slew of games slated for release. Here’s a quick rundown of some of my most anticpiated titles. (in no particular order).
1. Mass Effect: Andromeda. I’ve owned and played ME1, 2, and 3, so you could say i’m something of a fan. the intense, sci-fi action mixed with rich storytelling, and some open-world exploration sprinkled in there? Yeah, I’m sold. I’m hoping the MP from ME3 comes back...I sunk a LOT of hours into that MP. I realllly enjoyed it. Salarian infiltrator was OP pre-nerf and maintained his awesomeness afterwards. I won’t go into nerdy detail, but I was good with getting headshots and stacked him that way. Oh boy, the insta-kills were amazing. anywho...
2. Ghost Recon: Wildlands. Ever since GRAW2 on 360, I've been about these games. I love the feel, the action, directing your squad to setup the perfect ambush and executing it perfectly. The MP was pretty fun too. I’ve always liked the GRAW stories and the Tom Clancy branch of video games.I’ll be giving this a look. 3. SP: The Fractured But Whole. The Stick of Truth was a genuinely hilarious game that payed out like a big SP episode. It was also a decent game, to boot. The rpg-elements were surprisingly deep and fun to play with, but the game never took itself too seriously, which let me really enjoy it.  4. Crackdown 3. I bought the first crackdown because it was in the bargain bin of Gamestop, (anyone remember those? lol i’m really dating myself here). Anyways, that $5 ended up being an awesome investment. Crackdown ended up being TONS of fun. Once I started getting really powerful and basically turned into Superman, the city became my little play thing. I’m hoping for more of that run faster than cars, jump over buildings, and destroy everything with one punch the first one delivered. 5. Sniper Elite 4.I got SE:V2 from gamefly, back when I had a subscription. and the slomo kills hooked me instantly. Stalking your opponents, learning their patterns, formulating a plan of attack, then being rewarded with an amazingly detailed and satisfying x-ray kill cam was a brilliant experience. I’m hoping for more of the same from SE4.

Imagine Jurassic Park but with drones. The island of Auroa, owned by Jace Skell (The owner of Skell Tech) is an island overrun by the arms and corruption of a corporate gone evil. The island was supposed to be a world of innovation and coined “World 2.0” by Jace Skell, this was not the case though. Skell Tech is a major tech weapon producer of the US Government and comes under major investigation and public eyes turn to them when they are thought to have their hands in some corruption and dealings. The Wolves, an ex-US military Spec-ops, take over the island and take hostage employees of Skell Tech. When the island goes offline, the CIA launch a Ghost Recon operation to find out exactly what is going on and take down the Wolves. A throwback to Wildlands sees Anthony “Tony” Perryman aka Nomad, come back into the light as the Military helicopters sent into Auroa are taken down by a mysterious projectile. And so it begins…

BEAUTIFULLY OVERBOARD
Breakpoint reminds me of those intellectuals that overexplain something and go into so much detail that everyone leaves saying “HUH”. The game brings a beautiful island into our views with different environments to concur as well as enemies, giving it that extra touch of change and difference from mission to mission. Here is the thing though, as much variant as there is; it is too much, sometimes taking you a good 10 minutes to reach your objective to actually start the mission. The problem does not lie with the travelling because they put fast travel to points on the map; the problem lies in the “too much of a good thing”. Personally, on open world games I like to roam and take full advantage of the game’s offering, however, I felt myself going mindlessly through missions just because I did not want to trek across the entire map just to go through an entire mission to find 1 blue print. The story became mechanical and I lost that entire “oh look a butterfly” side mission journey that makes playing the game worth the time.

WORTH THE TIME THOUGH?
When it came to the actual gameplay, I was extremely surprised at how much fun I had running through missions due to the playstyles of each mission. Playing at a higher difficulty turned up the importance of each encounter with the Wolves. Strategically planning an entry point and who to take down first, how to stay out of sight of automated turrets and watch-drones made for exciting time spent during the missions. The ease of the controls with the keyboard is something you don’t see very often on PC, easy to learn and quick to engage. The efforts put into the objectives made it an amazing experience, with the thinking factor of the game turned up to max I felt myself engrossed in missions.

SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT
If you played Wildlands, you’ll know the general foundation of Breakpoint. In fairness, it’s a follow up title with links between the two. However, the same way wildlands felt and came across when it came out is the same way Breakpoint feels at this point. The title feels unfinished and not polished enough to call itself a AAA title. Wildlands did eventually see major updates some out that made it a lot smoother and more fun for the masses, which saw it draw a large fan base. The issue I faced with Breakpoint was the great number of issues I came across and the raw interactions I seemed to bump into. Visually I did not encounter many glitches or bugs but boy did I struggle with simple things like the camera getting stuck between taking cover or the character model clipped when I transition from cover to cover indoors. There was one point where I was laying on a rock to snipe into a camp and every time I went ADS the character model went full scorpion fit mode and start convulsing. A lot of these issues made me feel like the game was rushed and was not played through enough during the BETA phase. Perhaps the vast space and interactions makes it near impossible to get these kinds of things right and UBISOFT is relying on us to report back these issues, but then again I ask, why was the BETA not lengthened for this?

INTRIGUING AND PLANKED
In a world where Jon Bernthal is your antagonist, you would think “boring” would be the last thing someone says about this story. Well, you think right. The story is somewhat exciting and a little predictable on my end but that might be me. Learning your link to the now leader of the “bad guys” is an awesome experience in itself, but figuring out why and what is happening takes a backseat to this (Which I think was a smart move). Creating that personal character development and interaction creates a broken bind that is difficult to explain. The story is told well and characters are portrayed with great voice work and some awesome amazing writing. The main issue is the NOC side of the game; I felt like I was shooting walking scarecrows, mindless sacks of meat that were nothing but targets to slow down your mission. It was so bad at one point I restarted the game and turned up the difficulty to maximum so that I could get the best experience! Getting one shot by a screaming sack of meat was better than being stealthy just to shoot a mindless goof in the back of the head.

FUN WITH THE MASSES
The title seems thrive in the co-op function and cannot be stopped when you and your mates are sneaking around communicating your movements and actions in discord. The fun can be had with this, especially when you play like a spec ops team, making calls out and distracting the enemies together (like Wildlands before). Jumping into the PVP side of games usually comes to me quite naturally but I found myself not really worrying about that side of the game quite yet and only jumped in for a few rounds just to unlock my items and achievements from this. The PVP section is quite fast paced compared to the main game and the play styles needs to switch drastically if you’re a stealthier play like myself. I did have lots of fun but I would not say that this is even the 3rd or 4th strongest point about this game.

QUALITY TO COME
In all honesty, I believe in this game and the Ghost Recon titles has a whole, I trust in the developers and the studio to add more to this game like they did to Wildlands. With character customization and the level of skill tree progression, insane objective boards and crafting mechanics the game sure has potential to become one the other greatest objective based looter shooter out there in my opinion, if they devs choose to lead it that route. I say grab it if you’re a Recon fan, try it and if you don’t like it follow the patches until you see the changes you want because trust me they will come.
