My ass could never be a writer because I refuse to bend my notion of quotation marks meaning literal strings. It's ENCAPSULATED it shouldn't affect or be affected by the outside sentence

Some examples:

"Proper": Did she say "What?" : Unclear if the question mark belongs to the quote, the encapsulating sentence, or both.

My way: Did she say "What?"? : You know EXACTLY where we stand. That's both of them baby!

When shortening a word ('cause, 'till, 'scuse) should the mark be straight or curly?

Some fonts will do eitehr automatically, but smart (or curly) quotes is the preferred use by professional editors to denote "open" and "close". So, technically, it should be ‘cause to show that the word is closed after the mark.

Fun fact, it's not a comma. It's a lower single quotation mark, which happens to just look exactly like a comma (if the typeface supports it). It exists because many languages use different quotation marks than English.
