I don't normally roll up on you guys with book recommendations, but I just read Brittney Griner's Coming Home, her story about her ordeal about imprisonment in Russsia and WOW! I read the whole 300pg book on the plane ride home to NA from Europe and didn't put it down the entire time. I think the FA thought I was upset about the in-flight meal choice when I was actually crying reading a letter BG wrote to her wife while in a Russian prison.

I'm not going to get into international law. I know it varies between countries. No value judgements either.

What I will say is that BG's book is illuminating about what prisoners go through when detained in foreign prisons, regardless of their crimes. Like, don't commit crimes in general (BG admitted to having CBD cartridges for personal use (totaling an insignificant amount) without any intent to distribute), but also don't make innocent mistakes. Ever. Seriously. It's harrowing what an internationally known athlete went through without thinking how easy it could be for you to be detained for anything.

I'm a CT Sun fan, but I'll always be rooting for BG, even when she plays against us.

A couple more strides and we are in the stable which stretched along the northern wall of the hut. Coal bricks and bales of pressed fodder provided the building material for this strange zoo. Side note: Anton Omelchenko was not Russian, nor cradled in Caucasus. He was Ukrainian, born in Bat'ki near Poltava, east from Kiev. His family were simple peasants and I find it quite important here. Being from neighbouring Poland (with some Ukrainian ancestors too) and from a long line of farming peasants myself I know a tad about the history and the mentality in this corner of Europe. The peasants in Poland, Russsia and Ukraine, where serfdom and feudal services were cruel and lasted very long (it ended in Russian Empire in 1861) had deeply ingrained, generational distrust of rich people and strangers (because not much good ever came from them). That distrust was very, very deep and I find it remarkable that Oates, a rich stranger, managed to break through that distrust in Anton.
