Let’s Finish Pride Month Strong!
What it do, y’all?! This is the last week of Pride Month. I’m sad to see it go, but thankfully, it comes around every year. If you’re like me and haven’t done a whole lot to celebrate Pride, there’s still time left. There are many events taking place across the U.S. So, let’s finish this Pride Month strong and on a good note!
I did a little research—and I do mean a little—on events happening in the States, and I wanted to share that with you guys. Below is a list of events in some major cities and RVA. Obviously, I can’t provide every event in every state. I’m not a machine, but I wanted to share this information in case you didn’t know, wanted to participate in an event, or couldn’t find anything in your own search. Also, if you want to add to the list, please do so in the comments.

Several pride organizations and Virginia Museum of History and Culture are hosting a screening of a local documentary called “Meet Me By the Magnolia” that explores the history of gay cruising in RVA. This is on June 29th starting at 2pm at VMHC.

Since Severin Films has declared me a "Doctor Who expert" on their upcoming Blu-ray, it's time to put my money where my mouth is and put that to use. How? I'm judging a time travel costume contest!
The Time Travelers Gala will include music from across the decades, themed drinks, photo ops, and the aforementioned costume contest. There will also be a canned food drive, with every two cans earning you a raffle ticket. I'll be there enjoying, well, the whole scene.
Join me tomorrow in Richmond! Tickets are going fast!

Flat Peregrine has started her journey to Miss Fisher Con 2024 in New Orleans! This month, she's in Richmond, VA. Flat Peregrine has had a soft spot for RVA ever since her 3-dimensional counterpart was a celebrity guest for Miss Fisher Con when it was in Richmond in 2021.
Richmond is known as River City, so naturally Flat Peregrine's first stop was by the James River. Even with the dismal weather, the James was still magnificent. We just know that Flat Samuel would love to try his luck with the fishing here.
From there, Flat Peregrine made her way downtown, to the site of the Richmond 34 protest. This was where 34 Virginia Union University students held a nonviolent sit in at Thalhimers Department Store's whites-only lunch counter in February 1960. This event, and several actions in support of it, would lead to the integration of most Richmond businesses in the early 1960s. Thalhimers is now gone, but the site is marked by not one, but 2 historical markers.
From there, Flat Peregrine headed over to the Virginia Museum of History and Culture, where to her surprise, she found that a portion of the original lunch counter has been preserved.
Her last stop was at the Markel Building, a rather unique Richmond landmark. Built in 1962, the building's design was said to have been inspired by a foil-wrapped baked potato. Flat Peregrine found it stunning, and very much disagrees with the online magazine that labeled it one of the 10 ugliest buildings in the world.
Where will Flat Peregrine turn up next? Stay tuned!

Richmond: A City of History, Diversity, and Growth
Tumblr media
Richmond, the capital of Virginia, is a city with a rich history that blends seamlessly with its growing modernity. Founded in 1737 by English settlers, it played a pivotal role during the American Revolution and the Civil War. Today, Richmond is known for its historical significance, vibrant cultural scene, and an evolving urban landscape that attracts both tourists and new residents.
Historical Significance
Richmond's past is one of the city's most defining features. As the capital of the Confederacy during the Civil War, the city houses some of the most important landmarks from this period. The American Civil War Museum, the White House of the Confederacy, and Monument Avenue are some of the notable sites that draw history buffs from around the country. St. John’s Church, where Patrick Henry delivered his famous Give me liberty, or give me death” speech, stands as a symbol of the city's involvement in the American Revolution.
Beyond these iconic historical markers, Richmond is also home to a number of antebellum houses and heritage museums that showcase the city's colonial past and its importance during the industrial boom of the early 20th century.
A Hub of Art and Culture
While history might be the backbone of Richmond, art and culture are its lifeblood. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) boasts an expansive collection of works from around the globe, including one of the largest collections of Fabergé eggs outside of Russia. The city also has a burgeoning street art scene, best showcased in the annual RVA Street Art Festival, which turns public spaces into vibrant canvases.
Additionally, Richmond hosts numerous cultural festivals, including the Richmond Folk Festival, which celebrates diverse musical traditions and the community's multiculturalism.
Natural Beauty and Outdoor Activities
Richmond’s location along the James River provides residents and visitors with abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation. The James River Park System offers trails for hiking, biking, and kayaking right in the heart of the city. Belle Isle and Brown’s Island are popular spots for locals to relax, take in scenic views, or attend one of the city’s many outdoor events.
Economic Growth and Innovation
In recent years, Richmond has seen a surge in economic development. With a growing tech industry, a thriving startup scene, and a booming food and craft beer culture, the city is attracting young professionals and entrepreneurs. Neighborhoods such as Scott’s Addition are undergoing revitalization, transforming into hotspots for breweries, restaurants, and loft-style living.
In summary, Richmond is a city where history, culture, nature, and innovation intersect, creating a dynamic urban environment that continues to evolve while celebrating its storied past.

"Funk, Rock, and Soul: DJ Williams Delivers with 'By Way of RVA'" Welcome music freaks, brace up for some rocking summer as DJ Williams, electric guitar wizard and producer par excellence, sets off for a 26-city tour across the U. S. This is more than just an ordinary concert – it’s a celebration of his latest album titled “By Way of RVA” that is a testament to the city of Richmond, Virginia where he cultivated his unique creativity. If you have got the opportunity to watch DJ Williams perform, then you well aware of the fact that this guy is a monster on stage. Premier Guitar even described him as ‘…a monster… an inspiring and efficient and melodic soloist, with a warm sound and extraordinary technical proficiency. ’ Now, he begin and ends his tour on May 3 in New Orleans during Jazz Fest After Dark and on July 13 in Golden, Colorado. But he’s not doing this alone – DJ is supported by incredibly talented musicians, including Ben Atkind on drums, Steph Orsini on bass, and Macon Mann on keys. Together, they’re going to be ripping through tracks from his latest EP, “By Way of RVA,” released on Projekt Records and highlighting just how versatile of a musician DJ is. We’re talking funk, rock, soul – all in one, and all part of this excellent piece of audio. [caption id="attachment_55817" align="alignnone" width="1038"] This is followed by the opening track on the EP ‘Fade Away’[/caption] This is followed by the opening track on the EP ‘Fade Away’, a catchy tune that can only be attributed to DJ Williams but has hints of Lenny Kravitz to it. It has its energy from the power chords, live drum and a guitar solo that will bring anyone to their knees. Next up is “Burning Ash” which features very powerful riffs and great falsetto, and then we’re on the dreamy “By Way of RVA” which features Hip Hop beat and awesome Guitars that take one to another world. Though, the piece that I found most impressive as generally unorthodox is “Mr. Nobody,” with it’s strange guitar line and extended vocal summit that solves this great tale. There’s also DJ’s take on Nirvana’s heart shaped box, so this is one of those they take it into lo-fi, trip-hop, trap style, this and that, that proves how much of a beast he is. “Turn Of Events” is the final cut with a reggae inflection perfectly serving as a laid-back finale after the musical chaos. What is even more intriguing is the fact that the album can be regarded as highly personal for DJ. He did the whole thing in his bedroom and even produced some peculiar ideas such as placing drums in the wardrobe and vocals in the shower as it created a natural reverb. Listen to how he stacked like 22 vocals on “Heart-Shaped Box” or just how he went over the top with these orchestral synth arrangements on the title track. That is the life story of DJ, who was born in Plainfield, New Jersey, grew up in Richmond, Virginia, and who listens to the music ranging from Curtis Mayfield and Nirvana, from Miles Davis and Led Zeppelin. He is currently the lead guitarist for Karl Denson Tiny Universe Band, also performs a solo project DJ Williams Projekt as well as has performed with John Legend, Dave Matthews Band, and George Clinton to name but a few. And if you are up for the fact filled summer of live music, don’t snooze on DJ Williams ’ tour. And, with his fiery performances and this thrilling new EP, he’s absolutely making an impact on the musical landscape. Don’t wait for the show, take Your tickets, turn up the music on RVA, and let the concert begin! Listen to By Way Of RVA https://open.spotify.com/album/6jKhcEaErVzqlQiLQ2S99z Follow DJ Williams on Facebook Spotify Bandcamp Youtube Instagram
