Understanding the frameworks behind how spells work (and why they might not)

Magic, for all its candles and cauldrons, has a backbone. Not just a spiritual one, but a conceptual one—an architecture of meaning that shapes how we understand the strange, numinous art we call spellwork. Behind every enchantment, every prayer, every charm whispered in the dark, there is an operating system. A model. A lens.

And like all lenses, what you look through changes what you see.

Welcome to the Four Models of Magic: the Energy Model, the Spirit Model, the Psychological Model, and the Informational Model. This is the most widely known and intuitive model, especially in New Age, modern witchcraft, and metaphysical communities. It sees magic as an act of manipulating unseen energies that exist within and around all things.

For this mediumship reading to work best for both of us- it helps if there is a lot of dialogue. Sometimes I see things that are symbolic and sometimes they’re literal. For instance, in a mediumship reading recently I kept seeing a single walnut & its shell on an empty table. But what it ended up meaning was hardship. That this spirit who came forward was sharing that they experienced hardship & hunger. So it helps to work together to figure it out. There is no ego here with me- So let me know if something doesn’t make sense- I might be looking at something literally when it’s meant to be symbolic. Now, getting to a hypnotic state is actually pretty fast thing. There is an induction technique I prefer using, called the eye lock, and as soon an you experience that, you’re already hypnotized- so the rest of the time I’m guiding you deeper you can already know in the back of your mind- you don’t need to stress about if you’re hypnotized yet, you’re already there. It’s also important to note hypnosis doesn’t really feel that different from being awake. It’s not like a sleepy or hazy state. It feels similar to a daydream or when you’re reading a book and you’re imaging scenes from it. You don’t even have to have a particularly strong visual imagination. You might just know things, or use any of your other clairsenses- it’s just about being open to it and not shutting down what you’re receiving. That’s really what is key with this whole process. Trusting yourself enough to let go & experience what you need to experience. After I guide you to a hypnotic state I’ll take you back to the lifetime you most need to see, then as you talk through it, describing what you’re seeing and experiencing I would take you to your most important moment, and then your death. Then probably the most crucial part of this experience I’ll take you to meet your spirit guide to learn why you saw this particular life. As per Togashi's Storytelling DNA meta, SYMBOLISM and Names are vitally important in YYH, to the extent Togashi even told us via a manga blurb (albeit in a satirical tone in order to hide the truth from publishers) that he picked his characters' Names with as much thought, care & consideration as he would his own children's names, to reveal the Hidden Kuwameshi Soul Bond Romance that's forbidden by broadcasters!

Since Kuwabara's last name 桑原 means Mulberry Origin, let's have a little starter of Japanese Mulberry, coz Togashi leveraged Japanese cultural context to weave Hidden Meaning into the very fabric of YYH! 🗾🏯🎎

In a nutshell (or should we say cocoon 🤣), Mulberry feeds Silkworms in a symbiotic sacred relationship that's so steeped in real-world Japanese Divinity, there's even a creation myth for Mulberry Silkworms in Japan's oldest text the Kojiki (古事記, Records of Ancient Matters), a chronicle of "myths, legends, genealogies, and semi-historical accounts" about the Shinto Kami-samas (deities) that created Mulberry Silkworms, the Japanese islands and Japan's imperial line!

Which is why I read Yusuke as a One True Love kinda guy who'll only ever be in love with Kuwa, his one & only Mulberry! 🥹🥹🥹

Coz apart from this Mulberry-Silkworm Symbolism revealing this trait about Yusuke, we also have ALL of Japanese original canon showing us Yusuke's only romantically interested in Kuwa!

Not to mention, Yusuke's Mazoku 'father' Raizen is also a One True Love kinda guy who literally STARVED himself to death to honor his dead human lover, forsaking all other love interests like Enki's hot wife who was actively chasing Raizen before she married Enki!

Costa Rica Pt.1. The Landing 12th Feb 2022.

January has felt like fog. Ever since my Christmas ‘out-of-body trip’, I’ve been in a strange, slow-motion panic, and in the month since, I’ve been hit by wave after wave of realisations, truths, nuggets of information from myself I didn’t ask for. It feels relentless.

I’m glad that I’m living with Sofi and her partner, because they are party people, and that seems to be all I’m capable of right now, but I think I’ve been going a bit too far. Suddenly, I’m overstimulated by everything. Too many sounds, too many smells. Crowds feel unbearable. It’s like my whole body has become an antenna. I can feel everything, and it’s terrifying. I keep asking myself—am I losing my mind? Am I having a full-blown psychotic break? I’ve even suggested a ‘casual’ arrangement with an old friend and have been spending a lot of time with him. There’s something insanely comforting about just hanging out with him and watching The Simpsons. Mostly, I think I just needed somewhere quiet to go.

Somewhere with less energy bouncing off the walls.

Last week at a friend’s birthday, Sofi said something strange. She told me she was jealous of my “spiritual gifts”—jealous that I can suddenly ‘do all this cool spiritual stuff’. I looked at her in panic, “Sofi, I’ve not asked for any of this. I am in hell, and my entire being feels like it’s been r**ped by the universe.” And she just said, “Still, I’m jealous.” I can’t unpack how that makes me feel, but if I’m writing it down, it must matter.

After a few weeks of ‘too much fun’, something odd started happening. I’ve started (what Alastair calls) emotional burping, which is kind of a rubbish name, because it’s not a burp—it’s more like a diaphragm spasm from ‘inauthenticity’, as if my body is hiccupping grief or fear or overwhelm before I even know it’s there. Alastair says that it’s common with ‘Solar Plexus activation’, when your Solar Plexus ‘wakes up’. I’m so incredibly thankful that I have someone who can explain these things to me, but even so, part of me wishes someone would just look me in the eye and say, “Hey… this sounds nuts. You should probably see someone.” Not in a dismissive way, but because everyone acting like this is totally normal without ever experiencing it isn’t helping…

These burp things do have one serious pay-off: they seem to guide me… I started to notice that they would start up when I was about to do something that didn’t actually feel right… So, I’ve decided to follow the burps to Costa Rica.

I know it sounds strange, following burps 8000km away, but I’ve found a place called The Retreat, Costa Rica. I’ve never tried any of those things, but it seems like something that’s just ‘obviously going to happen’ - that ‘it’s not a choice’ feeling. I’m also making a detour to collect the last of my things from Calgary and get another tattoo, so I figured—why not ‘swing through’ Tulum and stay at Kan?

I’ve never been scared of solo travel. But I am scared of flying, so I usually just pass out and hope for the best. This time, as the plane began to descend into Costa Rica, I woke from a dream: snakes, calmly coiling around me. Jack, standing in the distance, just watching. No fear in his face. Just watching. The song playing through the plane’s speakers as I opened my eyes? “It’s Time to Wake Up,” by La Femme. Not subtle, universe. Not subtle at all. It’s funny what we have as symbols of expression. It’s wild how suddenly your life can change. When I had body dysmorphia, I quickly learnt that your eyes can see things that aren’t real, so I’ve been trying to learn how to see with more than my eyes, and so far, I’m finding meditating incredibly fun. Listening to music helps. One song in particular—Electric Feel (Henry Green’s version)—takes me right into the feeling of dancing with Jack, feeling light again. It somehow lets me forget how scared I still am.

When I listen, I see lightning-white raindrops falling all over me, soaking into my skin until I’m glowing with their light. It feels like joy. Electric. Like that first climb of MDMA, just as the bass drops.

As we were waiting to disembark, I closed my eyes again to imagine 32-year-old Ilana putting on her dungarees and meeting five-year-old Gaia (my middle name). They laughed and danced and hugged, and for a split second, I could actually feel myself.

When put together, Yusuke 幽助 and Kazuma 和真 means Souls (幽) in True Harmony (和真) who Help (助) each other which our heroes continually do throughout canon!

Kuwabara's last name is drawn from the Japanese phrase "kuwabara kuwabara" くわばら くわばら to ward off Lightning aka Bad Things like death, danger and bad luck, but written with the characters for Mulberry Field 桑原 instead, and GUESS WHAT - Mulberry has Divine significance in Japanese culture, is associated with the Sun God (Kuwa’s Reiki is Gold, like the sun), and items made from Mulberry wood are traditionally gifted to Japanese royalty, which Yusuke turns out to be!

Yusuke literally gets struck by Suzaku's lightning, tortured and nearly killed the minute he's separated from Kuwa in 4 beasts arc - more signs that Kuwa really is Yusuke’s Divine Protector who's been warding off lightning (Bad Things) from Yusuke just by being there, and their separation has immediate catastrophic impact on Yusuke coz Yusuke's not yet strong enough to fend off these threats on his own!

I know Togashi claims he came up with the Mulberry Field 桑原 characters for Kuwa's last name by combining characters from baseball players' names, and he very well may have done so, but considering the depth of Mulberry references throughout canon that we'll see in the full meta, you be the judge whether Togashi was also thinking of Mulberry's connotations when he picked these characters! Especially since at the end of the manga, there's a lot of seemingly throwaway lines about how both the Sky and the Sea are the same blue color, and how Yusuke told a half-truth about his real reason for picking the blue button in the 3-buttons mission! (This deserves its own meta another time!) I read this as 4th wall hint that Togashi was drawing from both Mulberry's divine symbolism and baseball players' names when he picked the characters for Kuwa's name, but he told a half-truth that he was only thinking of the baseball players! 🤣

Given the double Divine Protector symbolism in Kuwa's last name (from lightning ward and Mulberry) and the True Harmony meaning of his first name, Kuwa's literally made by his creator to be Yusuke's Divine Patron Saint who protects Yusuke from Bad Things coz Kuwa's in True Harmony (True Love) with Yusuke!

I read Yusuke's Good Luck in his fights throughout Genkai's succession trials as Kuwa's High Reiki unconsciously or semi-consciously increasing Yusuke’s Good Luck to save Yusuke from death or serious injury, as per the mini meta in the End Notes of The Good Fight Chapter 7!

Even if you choose not to take this read, who can forget Kuwa's SOUL literally left his body to save Yusuke from the demon fish in Rando fight? 🤯

There’re SO MANY times when Yusuke's opponents are outright surprised that Yusuke somehow has Reiki reserves when he shouldn't have any left, or they straight out say Yusuke's protected by stronger Reiki than expected (e.g. Rando fight, Suzaku fight, Toguro fight) - I read this as canon BOTH foreshadowing Yusuke's Mazoku heritage AND hinting that Kuwa's protecting Yusuke as his Divine Patron Saint by contributing his Reiki to Yusuke through their True Harmony Soul Bond connection! 

Of course, this can be read as just Yusuke's Mazoku heritage giving him deep Reiki reserves & protection, but consider this! Yusuke's Mazoku Reiki is Red! In all these instances when Yusuke has unexpected Reiki reserves, his Reiki is BLUE!

Guess what else is the exact same blue? Kuwa's SOUL is literally blue when he saved Yusuke from the demon fish in Rando fight, and immediately afterwards, Yusuke escapes the demon fish in a spectacular explosion of Blue Reiki, the same color as Kuwa's SOUL! We only see Kuwa's Soul return to his body after Yusuke escapes!

In final Toguro fight in the Dark Tournament, after anime Yusuke fires his last Rei Gun and has no Reiki left, Hiei tells us Rei Gun's power is still going after leaving Yusuke's finger! There's a mysterious background music when this happens, and key characters look surprised! I read this as Kuwa (who was playing dead 🤣) contributing his Reiki to Rei Gun!

Their Reiki literally becomes ONE after Kuwa gives his lifeforce to save Yusuke post Suzaku fight as per the pics at start of this post! and it's Gold, Green, and Blue to represent Kuwa, Yusuke, and their Soul Bond respectively! Reiki is basically the energy of your heart, spirit and SOUL, so this is canon visually showing us they have a True Harmony Soul Bond! Just look at how epic our heroes are with their ONE Reiki!

Greek culture even has a star-crossed lovers story associated with Mulberry trees (which inspired Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet), where the lovers are thwarted by family circumstances, life-threatening danger, bad timing, and one party jumping prematurely to the wrong conclusion, which then leads the other party to follow suit -- all these elements appear in the Kuwameshi Love Story! Dragon Lotus Chp. 7: SHINee Fanfic

Heyllo my stunning Shawol fam. Let me first apologize for the long and extended wait for this chapter. I was going to complete a chapter over the Christmas holiday but tragedy hit our fandom and I wanted to give myself and fellow Shawols time to heal before posting again. Please forgive my absence. I will be more diligent with posting the consequent chapters. On to the next chapter. Enjoy.

CHAPTER SEVEN

A couple of months have passed since my first couple of awkward weeks at my new school and I can say now that I’m finally adjusted… mostly. I’ve made a lot of new friends, my grades are so great that I’m in the top 1% of my class, I’m finally learning how to summon and control my reiki, and I’m not getting bullied for my dragon lotus marking or being a foreigner anymore.

Well… that’s not entirely true. Of all the people that used to tease me, only one person continues to do so. And that person is Choi Minho. I have no idea what his problem is. He’s always giving me weird glares in class; he purposely bumps into me in the hallway, and constantly makes rude comments about me to his friends. And I know this because whenever I walk past them, he intentionally speaks loud enough for me to hear it and then laughs maniacally when I sigh and shake my head. I’m trying my best to ignore him and not let him get under my skin, but it’s so difficult sometimes. Well, at least I only have to deal with him in school; or so I thought.

It was the weekend and I decide to visit one of the mom and pop shops my mom and I passed by on my way to school. The window display of one of the shops is very decorative and the antique pottery and figurines definitely catches my eye. Above the display is the name of the shop, “Choi Joi Antiques and Relics”. My interest is peaked and I rush in. I am immediately hit in the face by the scent on cherry blossom and peach incense. I feel so welcome and at home here already. As I enter the shop further, I don’t see anyone, so I just begin browsing around.

There are many beautiful pieces of artwork throughout the entire shop, but I spend most of my time in the pottery section; staring at vases, bowls, and urns. Something about the unique designs on one of them commands my attention. As I look through the vases, I see one with a familiar looking marking on it. The vase has a dragon coiled around it with lotus flowers flowing down its back and in the eye of the dragon there was a symbol. Looking closer at it, I see that the symbol matches my dragon lotus marking. And as my hand begins to graze over the dragon lotus design, my mark on my wrist begins to tingle. I’m so shocked at the sensation that I gasp and quickly pull my hand away.

I’m stuck in a state of shock until I hear a voice coming from behind me. I turn to see a sweet older woman walking towards me with a cane.

“Can I help you find something dear,” she asks with a smile on her face.

“Oh no thank you ma’am, I’m just looking around,” I say until I look back at the vase.

“Actually, I do have a question. Where is this vase from,” I ask.

“Ahh, that’s a very unique and special piece. A friend of mine made it before she passed away. She loved making vases like this that represented important moments in her life. This vase symbolized the birth of her grandchild I believe,” she explains

And just as she says that, a memory of my nana popped into my head. When I was younger and visited my grandparents in the summer, one of my favorite things to do was do pottery with my nana. She was always so creative and enthusiastic about her sculpting. I was more interested in just making a mess with the clay. We shared a lot of memories through her pottery. As I come back to reality, I hesitant before asking a question.

“Would you friend’s name happen to be Ohnim Sumin,” I ask a bit scared.

“Yes, it is. How do you know that,” she asks in shock.

“Ohmin Sumin was my grandmother. I think my birthmark was the inspiration for this piece,” I say as I show her the marking on my wrist. She looks at me in disbelief.

“Adajoon? Is that really you,” she asks. I nod my head and she shouts in excitement and hugs me.

“Oh my goodness, sweet girl. Aww, I haven’t seen you since you were 2 years old, clinging to the hem of your grandmother’s dress. You’ve gotten so big and so beautiful. Oh goodness, it’s so nice to see you again. And what are the odds of you coming into my shop and finding the vase your grandmother made because of you. Its fate I tell you. As a matter of fact, I’m going to give you this vase. No charge,” she says proudly.

“Oh no, you don’t have to do that. I’ll pay for it,” I insist.

“Nonsense sweetie. Your grandmother would have wanted you to have it. Please take it,” she says.

I hesitant at first but then take the vase and thank her.

“Come. Let’s go to the front and get you a bag so you can carry the vase safely,” she suggests as we walk to the front of the shop.

“I’ll get my grandson to get a bag for you. Min Min, come here for a second please,” she shouts towards the back of the shop.

“Coming Baa-Baa,” I voice responds from the back.

I turn to the direction on the voice, but before I can do or say anything my jaw drops, because standing before me was none other than Minho. He stops in his tracks as soon as he sees me.

“Ah, there you are. Can you go in the back and grab a bag for this young lady to carry her vase in,” she asks him.

“Sure,” he responds while staring blankly at me before heading back to get a bag. He soon comes back and hands me the bag. I thank him awkwardly.

“Thank you dear. Oh, and I want to introduce you to someone. This is Adajoon. The granddaughter of one of my closest friends, Mrs. Ohnim that passed away not long ago,” she says.

“I actually already know her Baa-Baa. We go to the same school and have a couple of classes together. Your grandmother was a wonderful woman,” he says to his grandmother and then to me.

To me, he was acting so fake and lying through his teeth. Not that my nana wasn’t a wonderful person because she definitely was, but the fact that it was coming from him made it seem fake and insincere. But I don’t want to cause a scene in front his grandmother, so I swallow my pride and thank him.

“Well, it’s getting late and I better head home before it gets too dark. Thank you so much for the vase. And it was nice to meet you again,” I says trying to exit this now awkward situation.

“You’re welcome sweetie. Feel free to stop by anytime you’d like,” she says.

“Yes ma’am. Goodbye,” I wave as I walk to the door.

“Bye Bye dear, “she says.

“Bye Adajoon. See you on Monday,” Minho says. I cringe internally as I can picture the smirk that is most definitely plastered on him face. I just respond with a wave and exit immediately.

I finally make it to the sanctity of my home. I am greeted, as usual, by the overly excited Mushi. I swear he is an old dog with the undying spirit of a puppy. I go to the kitchen to make myself a serving of some of the left over peach cobbler mom made, then head to my room. I place the cobbler on my nightstand as I walk to my drawer to place my new vase next to the picture of me and my nana. The more I look at the picture, the more I miss her. I turn back to my cobbler and sit on my bed as I eat. As I sit there, I can’t help but look at the vase and think about the sensation I got from touching it. It’s like I could feel a piece of my nana from it and it made me feel so warm and loved. After finishing my cobbler, I decided to take a nap. As I close my eyes to sleep, I hear the faint voice of my nana say, “Remain strong Adajoon. Nana loves you”, and I become consumed by sleep.
